Former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon died on 11 January 2014 after having suffered a stroke on 4 January 2006 that left him in a persistent vegetative state until his death, two weeks after his condition further deteriorated.
Illness and death
Sharon suffered a hemorrhagic stroke on 4 January 2006. Sharon underwent a series of subsequent surgeries related to his state. He remained in a long-term care facility from 6 November 2006 until the time of his death. His condition worsened from late 2013 and Sharon suffered from renal failure on 1 January 2014.
After eight years in a coma, Sharon died at 14:00 on 11 January 2014.
Funeral
A state funeral will be held on 13 January in accordance with Jewish burial customs which require that interment takes place as soon after death as possible. His body is to lie in state in the Knesset Plaza beginning 12 January until an official ceremony to be attended by dignitaries and world leaders to be held in the Knesset chamber followed by a funeral to be held at the family's ranch in the Negev desert where Sharon will be buried beside his wife, Lily. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is expected to attend the funeral. The prime minister's office issued a statement that announced public viewing 18:00 on the day it was at the Knesset. Other dignitaries to attend are: U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Former Dutch Prime Minister Wim Kok, Czech Prime Minister Jiri Rusnok and German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, amongst others.
