Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati, IITG) is an autonomous engineering and technology-oriented institute of higher education established by the Government of India, located in Guwahati, in the state of Assam in India. It is the sixth Indian Institute of Technology established in India. IITG is officially recognised as an Institute of National Importance by the government of India.. At present the Institute has 11 Departments, 3 Inter-Disciplinary Academic Centres and 4 Centralised Service Center covering all the major engineering, science and humanities disciplines, offering BTech, BDes, MA, MDes, MTech, MSc and PhD programmes. IIT Guwahati has world class infrastructure for carrying out advanced research and has been equipped with state-of-the-art scientific and engineering instruments.

History

The history of IIT Guwahati traces its roots to the 1985 Assam Accord signed between the All Assam Students Union and the Government of India, which mentions the general improvement in education facilities in Assam and specifically the setting up of an IIT. The Indian Institute of Technology- Assam Society was formed in 1989. The foundation stone was laid in July, 1992 in Guwahati. Indian Institute of Technology (Amendment) Act 1994, passed by the Parliament of India, was notified in Gazette of India on May 26,1994 by which the The IIT Guwahati- Assam Society was made into IIT Guwahati. By the Gazette of Indian notification of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (India) dates September 1, 1994 the Central Government of India declared September 1, 1994 as the date on which the Indian Institute of Technology (Amendment) Act 1994 (No. 35 of 1994) came into force and IIT Guwahati was established. The enrollment of students started in 1995.The selection process was the same as that of all IITs, i.e., through the Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE). In 1998, the first batch of students were accepted into the Master of Technology program through the GATE.

Campus and geography

The campus of IITG is on the northern banks of Brahmaputra and abuts the North Guwahati town of Amingaon, pincode-781039.Within a short period of time, IIT Guwahati has been able to build up world class infrastructure for carrying out advanced research and has been equipped with state-of-the-art scientific and engineering instruments.Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati's campus is on a sprawling 700 acres (2.8 km) plot of land on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra around 20 kms. from the heart of the city. With the majestic Brahmaputra on one side, and with hills and vast open spaces on others, the campus provides an ideal setting for learning.It is arguably the most beautiful campus in India.The weather remains pleasant for most part of the year with a maximum day temperature in summers of around 35C and a minimum temperature in the winters of around 7C

IIT Guwahati is located just on the outskirts of the city of Guwahati and is well connected to other parts of the country by road, rail or air. The campus is around 20 km from the heart of the city and around 40 min drive from the Guwahati Airport (Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport at Borjhar). Guwahati Airport averages about 95-100 arrivals and departures a day. Guwahati is serviced with direct flights to Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai, Ahmedabad and other major cities in India by different airlines. A modernization plan is underway at Guwahati airport right now and once it is completed, the AAI plans to make Guwahati a hub of air connectivity. To reach the institute from the city, there is an Institute bus service that runs regularly to and from the city.

The Academic Complex houses the academic departments, centres, their laboratories, classrooms, etc. A spacious Administrative Building accommodates the offices of the Institute. The Computer and Communication Centre houses a modern Computer Centre and Central Library. A Lecture Hall Complex with four lecture halls, each capable of seating 250 scholars and an auditorium of 1500 capacity provide space for teaching and holding various events/programmes.A Commercial Complex provides shopping of essential commodities for the people in the complex, with a restaurant and several shops and two community halls. The Sports Complex comprising of an indoor sports stadium with synthetic badminton, table tennis and squash courts, gymnasium and the Students Gymkhana office, an 8 lane 50 m long swimming pool and flood-lit playing fields for all major outdoor games provide ample scope of recreation for the campus residents. A 72-room Guest House, ample faculty and staff quarters, married students’ flat-lets, eight men’s and one women’s hostels with single occupancy rooms make the residential component of the infrastructure. The Institute-Hospital with 30 beds. A Conference Centre with a provision of 4 halls (2 halls with 150 capacity and 2 halls with 200 capacity) and a Food Court is nearing completion.

Other facilities include a campus wide network on a Gigabit Ethernet backbone with access points in every hostel room, an internal EPABX, high capacity internet connections (including access from residences), two banks with ATM facilities, a post office with Railway Passenger Reservation facility, Akshara(pre-primary school-cum-creche), a Kendriya Vidyalaya and a bus service to the city.

All faculty and staff members of the institute are provided with PCs. All these computers are hooked on to the campus network. Most of the office work is automated with a view to improve efficiency and reduce the use of papers. Internet and e-mail facility are provided through leased lines.

The Central Library, one of the important central facilities of the Institute, currently has a collection of over 1,17,000 items including 2605 subscribed online journals and magazines.The Central Library also subscribes to most journals online, allowing everyone to access them from their computers while in the campus.

The Institute has also established a Technology Incubation Centre (TIC) to allow students to translate their innovative ideas into commercially significant products by extending support to them after they graduate, in the form of finance, space and technical guidance.

Presently there are about 3948 students (2058 undergraduate and 1890 postgraduate) on rolls, 215 faculty members and 300 support staff.

Rankings

Internationally, IIT Guwahati was ranked 551–600 in the QS World University Rankings of 2011 and 89 in the QS Asian University Rankings of 2012. In India, among engineering colleges, it ranked 10 by India Today in 2012, 8 by Outlook India in 2012 and 7 by Dataquest in 2011. In the Mint Government Colleges survey of 2009 it ranked 6. The Chemical Engineering department was ranked 101-150 in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2012.

Student life and hostels

IIT Guwahati provides on-campus residential facilities to its students, research scholars, faculty members and many of its staff. The Gymkhana Club promotes the objectives of fostering extracurricular and co-curricular activities, welfare of students and their stay on the campus. All the students of the Institute have been provided with hostel rooms in the campus. The accommodation is single-seater. These hostels are equipped with all modern amenities. There are facilities for sports and recreation such as satellite TV, indoor games and a gymnasium.. The hostels are named after rivers and tributaries of North-East India:

• Subansiri Hostel (girl's hostel)
• Umiam Hostel
• Dibang Hostel
• Brahmaputra Hostel.
• Married Scholars Hostel (married postgraduates)

Among these hostels Manas, Dihing, Kapili and Siang are the old hostels and are of unique infrastructure compared to fairly new ones Kameng, Barak, Umiam and Dibang which can accommodate more people compared to the old ones.

Facilities for outdoor games like volleyball, basketball and football are also there. Every room in the the hostels are provided with network connectivity. Separate accommodation is provided to the girl students. A round-the-clock canteen is in operation to cater to the needs of the students.

IIT Guwahati has numerous sports facilities thanks to Student Activity Center(SAC) maintained by students Gymkhana. That include athletic ground, football ground, hockey ground, cricket ground, lawn tennis courts, badminton courts etc.. and a gym. Every year a set of students are selected from each sports category for 'Inter IIT Sports Meet', a set of sporting events occur in the winter at any one of the IIT's.

Students' Gymkhana Council

The IITG Student Gymkhana Council is a powerful and apolitical student organization that acts as the link between the students and the administration. The Gymhkana Club promotes the objectives of fostering extra-curricular and co-curricular activites, welfare of students and their stay on the campus. It comprises of five boards viz. Cultural Board, Sports Board, Technical Board, Students' Welfare Board and Hostels' Affairs Board. In the hierarchy general secretaries are followed by individual secretaries of clubs and committees. All the members of the Students' Gymkhana are elected for the students, by the students and from the students. Elections are held mid-March. Elections are conducted by Chief Election Officer who is nominated by a committee comprising of Dean of Student Affairs and One Faculty Member (Selected by Dean Of Student Affairs)

Cultural Board

The Cultural Board Right organises all the cultural related activities in the campus.It organises Manthan-the Inter-Hostel War, Alcheringa-the annual cultural festival, Alfaaz-the literary festival, Kalakriti, Radio G - IITG's very own radio station, Cultural Nights which enshrine the campus with their enthusiasm on every occasion that they come-around. Besides there are various clubs like the literary club, the anchoring club, the music club, the fine arts club, the drama club, the photography club.

Sports Board

The Sports Board organizes and promotes all extra curricular activities in the field of Sports and any other items referred by the Students' Senate. Presently, Sports Board comprises of twelve Clubs.Each club organizes various events and competitions at regular intervals.The Sports Board also organizes Inter Hostel Sports Meet and organizes training sessions for various sports enthusiasts of the campus. Apart from this, every year all seven IITs meet at one of the IITs for Inter-IIT Sports Meet and Inter-IIT Aquatics Meet. The Sports Board takes responsibility of preparing students for these major events.

Technical Board

Technical Board was setup to foster the interest and enthusiasm of students towards innovation, entrepreneurship and guide them in the lines of their interest. Presently, Technical Board is divided into five different self interest groups. Apart from the activities conducted by the clubs Technical Board also conducts Techniche- The annual techno management festival of IITG. Technical Board through its activities is able to generate and nurture the interests of Students' Community of IITG as a whole be it entrepreneurship, innovation or imbibing the spirit of responsibility towards Environment.

Hostels' Affairs Board

The Hostel Affairs Board is the apex decision and policy making body for Hostels. It acts as a central coordinating body and its main function is to ensure proper working of the Hostel Management Committees (HMC) in individual hostels as per the directions laid by the Hostel Constitution and the HAB Procedures And Resolutions (HABPR). The HAB works under the purview of the Hostel Constitution and ensures that the rules and policies set up are followed.

Students' Welfare Board

The Students' Welfare Board shall broadly address the overall well being of the students of the institute. Its scope of activities shall include among various welfare activities counselling services to students, with Counselling Cell as a sub-committee of the Students' Welfare Board.

Annual festivals

Every year the students and administration of IIT Guwahati together organize and number of festivals and competitions. Techniche, Alcheringa, Reflux and IIT-Guwahati Entrepreneurship Summit are the conducted on a very large scale and are growing in terms of participation and sponsors.

Techniche

Techniche was started in 1999 in the Technology complex of IIT Guwahati, starting in two rooms and growing to over 15,000 participants from colleges and schools all across India, UAE and Singapore. Techniche has played host to Nobel laureates, leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs like Richard Stallman, Kiran Karnik, Prabhu Chawla, Nathan Schulhof, Dr. John C. Mather, Jeff Lieberman, Mike Fincke, Kiran Bedi, Dr. Raghuram Krishnapuram, Yashavant Kanetkar, Pranav Mistry, Mark Toorock etc. Techniche is a non-profit organization run by the student community of IIT Guwahati and promotes the development and honing of scientific and entrepreneurial skills in the academia and at the same time being socially responsible with its initiatives towards education amongst the underprivileged through its module 'We care'. Techniche is relatively very young in comparison to the other major college techno-management festivals of India,yet it has established itself amongst the biggest festivals of India in a very short period of time. The symbol of Techniche are two pixelated saplings, orange and blue in colour. The saplings are the portrayal of how techniche integrates the 'youth' from all around the country and effects red the blue colour stands for the management face of Techniche while the orange represents the technological front of techniche.

Alcheringa

Alcheringa is the annual cultural festival of the IITG. It is held for 4 nights and 3 days generally on the first weekend of February. Started in 1996 by a bunch of IITG students, Alcheringa has a footfall of more than 40,000 and a participation from 150 colleges from across the country.. It is a student-run non-profit organization which caters primarily to the youth of the country. It consists of competitions, informal events, workshops and showcases professional performances. Alcheringa boasts of performances by the stalwarts of the entertainment industry, from India and abroad. In the past, Alcheringa has featured performances from performers including Mohit Chauhan,Chitresh Das, Sonu Niigaam, Shaan, Strings, KK, Euphoria, Indian Ocean, Parikrama, The Raghu Dixit Project, Shankar Ehsaan Loy, Anoushka Shankar, Kalki Koechlin, Isha Sharvani, Vir Das, Advaita, Motherjane and RDB. Alcheringa has also hosted foreign acts like the Swiss folk metal band Eluveitie, Irish Rock band Frantic Jack, Israeli progressive metal band Orphaned Land, and Italian Embassy’s sponsored tour of Giuliano Modarelli.

Reflux, Annual Chemical Engineering Festival

Reflux is the Annual Chemical Engineering Festival organised by Chemical Engineering Department of Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. It aims to involve the students of the Chemical Engineering and also from closely related fields of Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry and Biotechnology. Reflux which is a unique of its kind welcomes everyone envisaging various learning events and competition and promoting a spirit of Chemical Engineering.The festival aims at bringing forth some of the most fascinating and mind-blogging phenomena related to Chemical Engineering through a series of Workshops, Lecture Series, Competitions and On-The-Spot events.

IIT Guwahati Entrepreneurship Summit

The IIT Guwahati Entrepreneurship Summit (IES) is conducted by the Entrepreneurial Development Cell (EDC), IIT Guwahati to inspire young students in North-East India to become Entrepreneurs. It is held annually as a 3 day summit in March. Apart from a series of talks by eminent speakers there are a host of workshops & networking sessions.

• Performing Arts Festival (PAF), the annual performing arts festival

Besides these, Inter-IIT Sports Meet is held annually every winter among the Indian Institutes of Technology. The Meet is hosted by each of the IITs in turn. In 2006, IIT Guwahati hosted the 42nd Inter-IIT Sports Meet for the first time. It will host the meet for the second time in December 2013.
