Q1 Etymology of Jesus / What is original name of Jesus?

  • Fact: Jesus is Aramaic.
  • Fact: Jews even preferred their Scrolls & Books in Palestinian Aramaic 200BCE - 200CE.

Dead Sea Scrolls scientists in Israel say, Jesus name and Temple reading likely came in Aramaic. http://www.deadseascrolls.org.il/learn-about-the-scrolls/languages-and-scripts

Question: So why are people blindly posting “Yeshua” as Jesus name, when that is not Aramaic, and my History Study says Yeshua was selected by a Protestant Scholar of Hebrew Aramaic and German possibly as late as 1700 CE? Based on my research the Talmud makes no mention of Jesus son of Mary or the Messiah by his actual name. (The few times the Talmud dared to add a note, the Catholic Church went on Crusades for not being in Canonical agreement with Catholic Dogma) In fact the name Yeshua seems to have been invented as an anagram by someone who said the Jews were using the name "Yeshu" to insult Jesus. https://en.wikipedia.org/Johann_Andreas_Eisenmenger

This 16 Source Essay is the closest source for Jesus in Aramaic to be found -- http://www.answering-christianity.com/eesa.htm

Q1 We know “Yeshua” is not Jesus’s name / Because “Yeshu” was the Hebrew until 1700

  1. As of 521 CE the Jews say Jesus was never in their Talmud or Religious writings. https://en.wikipedia.org/Jesus_in_the_Talmud
  2. Greek translation of the common Hebrew name Yehoshua יְהוֹשֻׁעַ (Joshua), Yeshua יֵשׁוּעַ did not originate until the Second Temple period
  3. Then in 1700 CE Frankfort Johann Andreas Eisenmenger printed Entdecktes Judenthum, saying that "Yeshu" was always such a deliberately insulting term for Jesus. And that Yeshua should be his name.

Thus, the Qur'an's historical accuracy in its usage of "`Eesa" rather than the Arabic "Yesu`" for the name of Jesus is indeed interesting to say the very least. As we have seen, "Y'SHW`" is actually based upon a problematic and an ignoble Hebrew nomenclature for Jesus which is littered with disagreement and controversy. For 2000 years Jesus has been recorded in history under the cursed title "Y'SHW" from "Yemach Shmo w'Zikro" meaing "may his name and memory be wiped out”. ` http://www.answering-christianity.com/eesa.htm

Or as Johann Andreas Eisenmenger wrote ~ "Yeshu" is actually an acronym for the formula (ימח שמו וזכרו(נו (Y'mach Sh'mo V'Zichro(no)) meaning "may his name and memory be obliterated". ` https://en.wikipedia.org/Yeshu

So neither Hebrew construct makes for a Valid original name leading to what Jesus was named.

Q1 Jesus was not in the Talmud by 512 CE / So Hebrew is not even a credible outside source

The first Christian censorship of the Talmud happened in the year 521. However, far better documented censorship began during the disputations of the Middle Ages. Advocates for the Christian church alleged that the Talmud contained insulting references to Jesus and his mother, Mary. Jewish apologists during the disputations said there were no references to Jesus in the Talmud, and claimed Joshua and its derivations was a common Jewish name, that they referred to other individuals. The disputations led to many of the references being removed (censored) from subsequent editions of the Talmud. ` https://en.wikipedia.org/Jesus_in_the_Talmud

As you can see the Jews claim to have never written his name down before. When askedin 521 CE they said none of the entries were about him. So why are people going with the Hebrew phrase that was used to slander Jesus without giving him a name? ` Yeshu in the Talmud. https://en.wikipedia.org/Yeshu

Another explanation given is that the name "Yeshu" is actually an acronym for the formula (ימח שמו וזכרו(נו (Y'mach Sh'mo V'Zichro(no)) meaning "may his name and memory be obliterated". The earliest known example of this theory comes from medieval Toldoth Yeshu narratives. This has led to the accusation, first voiced by writer Johann Andreas Eisenmenger in his Entdecktes Judenthum, that "Yeshu" was always such a deliberately insulting term for Jesus. Eisenmenger claimed that Jews believed that they were forbidden to mention names of false gods and instead were commanded to change and defame them and did so with Jesus' name as they considered him a false god. He argued that Jesus' original name was "Yeshua" and as Jews did not recognize him as saviour (moshia`) or that he had even saved (hoshia`) himself, they left out the ayin from the root meaning "to save". Eisenmenger's book against Judaism was denounced by the Jews as malicious libel, and was the subject of a number of refutations. It is also the acronym of yishtabach shemo vezikhro meaning "may his name and memory be praised".. In fact, the initial Y is the marker of the third person masculine future, so any verb agreeing with shemo vezikhro may be substituted, yielding the same acronym.

Q1 Etymology of Jesus / Why is Hebrew not part of the Etymology outline? ~ Hebrew was not longer in use

  1. According to Dead Sea Scrolls archaeologist, Yigael Yadin, Aramaic was the spoken language of Jews until Simon Bar Kokhba tried to revive Hebrew and make it as the official language of Jews during Bar Kokhba revolt (132-135 AD). Yigael Yadin noticed the shift from Aramaic to Hebrew during the time of Bar Kokhba revolt. In Book "Bar Kokhba: The rediscovery of the legendary hero of the last Jewish Revolt Against Imperial Rome" Yigael Yadin notes, "It is interesting that the earlier documents are written in Aramaic while the later ones are in Hebrew."(page 181).
  2. "Palestinian Aramaic - In use from 200 bce to 200 ce, Jewish Palestinian Aramaic was likely Judea’s primary language at the time of Jesus and the early Christians. In the Qumran Scrolls, literary sub-dialects of this language are represented in several biblical translations, and in a number of non-biblical works, especially parabiblical works such as the Genesis Apocryphon and the Aramaic Levi Document. Bar Kokhba letters and 2nd century CE papyri documents recovered from the Judean Desert refuge caves show a different variation of Jewish Palestinian Aramaic that is likely closer to the spoken language at the time." The Temples used Palestinian Aramaic during Jesus’s Timeline http://www.deadseascrolls.org.il/learn-about-the-scrolls/languages-and-scripts
Starting at Zero (0) AD/CE, no Historical route involves the original time of Jesus passing into Hebrew and then into other languages. The Greeks got the Gospels from Aramaic. ~ There is not a religious benefit in Judaism documenting the Gospels during their time, especially when Aramaic was the Defacto Writing and Speaking Language even among the Jews living in 1948 Israel who claim the language is called Jewish Palestinian Aramaic.

Why force Hebrew into the Etymology of Jesus when there is no proof or record of the New Testament in Rome or Greece coming from a language other than Aramaic? The claim that Jesus name was derived from Hebrew spelling in the Old Testament has no basis in reality. Especially if the scriptures Jesus read were in Aramaic, and his name was Aramaic? Then historically his name came into Hebrew Centuries after his time, because even Rabbi were not using Hebrew encoding. ` DigDeep4Truth (talk) 22:21, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

Q1 Where is the oldest Aramaic texts with reference to Jesus / Are there any in the Nag Hammadi Library or in IRAQ?

I have a book called “The Lost Books of the Bible 1988” http://www.alibris.com/Lost-Books-of-the-Bible-Rh-Value-Publishing/book/9018435 ~ It is a reprint of books translated into English circa 1820 CE, and possibly released in English in response to a Catholic Decree. The contents are contested as non-canonical.

Q1 Aramaic name of Jesus? / Jeshua

Source: (Source http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/jesus?s=t )

circa 1175 (Old English simply used hælend "savior"), from Greek Iesous, which might be an attempt to render Aramaic as the proper name Jeshua (Heb. Yeshua) "Jah is salvation," a common Jewish personal name, the later form of Hebrew Yehoshua (see Joshua).

Q1 Aramaic name of Jesus? / Catholic Sources

Some Catholic sources say Yeshua/Jeshua is Aramaic and not Hebrew. (example follows)

Q1 Aramaic name of Jesus? / Eesa or Esus

I'm inclined to Agree. Jesus was "Eesa" or "Esus" (Based on Greek, Latin, Aramaic phonetic agreement). God was Elohim Genesis 1 (which I know to be Aramaic (El & Al), and not Hebrew as Genesis 2). Yiddish & Other Hebrew Language prefers the “Yuh” or “Yah” sounds for God. The Best Explanation being Aramaic translated in ___some_unknown_book___ was Jeshu or Yeshu (Hinting at German or Yiddish author or place of publishing).

Q1 Aramaic name of Jesus? / How close are Aramaic and Arabic?

Bedoian Arabic is closer to Aramaic than Polish German Hebrew of modern times. So his name should be closer to Eesa than Yeshua. Either way Palestinian Aramaic should be what is on the Jesus (name) page. Not Hebrew. It was not in used during Jesus's time.

Q1 Aramaic name of Jesus? / Yeshu

This was left blank.

Q2 What is the history of "Yemach Shmo w'Zikro"? / Why is this so hard to find online?

The name Yeshua "Y'SHW`" is actually based upon a problematic and an ignoble Hebrew nomenclature for Jesus which is littered with disagreement and controversy. For 2000 years Jesus has been recorded in history under the cursed title ישוע "Y'SHW`" in Hebrew "Yemach Shmo w'Zikro" meaning = "May his name and memory be wiped out".

Again if this is true, then why are people trying to force Hebrew into a period where Aramaic was the priestly and rabbinic language of the Temples or Synagogues?

Q2 The Myth people hear / Hebrew languages never changed pronunciation after Jesus

The Myth being spread publically is that Hebrew languages have never changed pronunciations, and that only the writing styles/systems changed with time. / But Twice in history since Jesus Birth it was a “Dead Language” (Please Help with Dates & Sources). / And a Third time is was the Polish-German Dialect (Please contrast pronunciation with Yiddish) that took control of 1948 Israel. The Polish German Dialect took control of the Education System & Dialects in the Holy Lands. / Please help find a phonetic reference for Hebrew that comes from Palestine Hebrew before 1900 and if possible, is in English.

Q2 Hypothesis: Spoken Hebrew was a Phoenician Dialect which used Aramaic Letters to Steno until Hebrew 200CE to 600CE

Looking as the Jewish communities in Palestine before 1947, they fall into the coastal region called (Phoenice) or Phoenicia, that was separate from Palestine (Palaeftina) on the 400 CE map. http://www.wdl.org/en/item/11745/

If the Torah was in Aramaic First, then does this mean King Solomon and Phoenicia was the cause of the Downfall of the Aramaic Faith? A Foreign Nation took control of the Temples and the Religion. But was limited to a very small concentrated area on the coast by the Egyptians Empire who guarded the Trade Routes Sinai to Between the Two Rivers (Mesopotamia) AND the other Across Ethiopia to the Indian Ocean to China. (China is being translated as "Heaven" in the scrolls / maps buried with the Kings).

Q3 Proto-Hebrew is Aramaic. Embracing Reality. / Torah, Tanakh, Bible were Aramaic First

Trivia: Did you know Proto-Hebrew was not Hebrew, but was Aramaic? Contemporary Jews stubbornly call it "Proto" rather than admit the original Torah language was Aramaic and not a Hebrew. (Also known as Paleo-Hebrew.)

Q3 The History of Rabbi starting 500 CE

I noticed "Rabbi" is Arabic from 500 AD/CE meaning "Lord" as in a Superior Ranked person. English KJV Bible "Lord Moses" makes a lot more sense. As he was also Rabbi Moses. Somehow Rabbi has taken on a different meaning than it had 1500 years ago. = Rabbi are Temple Lords. http://corpus.quran.com/qurandictionary.jsp?q=rbb#(1:2:3)

Q4 What are the oldest sources found online for Greek and Latin text which make reference to Jesus but are not Bibles

Where are the University Archives online? His name should be well documented in original Greek and Latin works. But people are posting contemporary sources. ~ How about manuscript photos with a source?
Not cracking on them, I too use Google Translate for hearing Greek Ιησούς “Ii̱soús” pronounced. http://translate.google.com/#la/el/iesus I took Latin in High School. The teacher told me the pronunciation of "ie" in Latin was not originally "Yah". That happened after the resurrection of Latin in 900CE. Before it was like ēā without the "Y" sound.

Q5 Is there an Authoritative book on the Phonetic History of Latin Languages? (Rough Estimate of Period Foci)

The reason I ask this is that 'Latin' Italy went through multiple phonetic systems. Does IPA outline how to pronounce the Three (3 Early,Classic, Late) pre-600 CE 'Latin' Phonetics? {I know this from my Latin teacher of 20 years ago (about 1995) and memory} Estimate the changes to be Pre-600CE "Ee-Ze'us", Post-Crusades Became "Aa-Ze'us", then Revival(Enlightenment) or Renaissance Latin "Yay-Zeus"? ~ There was also a change in written Latin Alphabets 79AD-1769AD, not just a change in pronunciation.

  1. __missing book "Classic (Pompeii) Latin" __Missing link
  2. __missing book Pre-600 "Late Latin" (Discovering the invention of True-Hebrew about 600CE may have killed the Catholic Faith, opening religious floodgates to Mohammedian Faith in the Qur'an which quoted no text going for a complete re-write of the Christian faith, still supporting the Christian Jesus and Mary Narrative)
  3. __missing book Post-900 "Crusades Latin" Pre-1340 __Sources
  4. __missing book Post-(1340,1478,1492) to Pre-Oxford1769 & Pre-Spain1818USA,pre-1834'Pluralist'Crusades) "Renaissance Latin" Variations __Link to Sources (Add Later)
  5. __Missing book "Modern Latin" Post-Oxford1769 & Post-Spain1838, successful removal of Aramaic/Arabic phonetics from the Americas and major changes of national Latin languages (FRIPS), to remove Aramaic/Arabic roots where possible.

Have you not heard of the phonetic corruption/change of Latin across time??? Then think on this: Old-Latin Rome "Ee-Zeus" became Post-Crusades "Yay-Zeus", became Italian Rome "Gesù"? Listen to Modern Latin & Italian "Jesus" side by side -> http://translate.google.com/#la/it/iesus Huge Difference Right? Rome never moved, so clearly the phonetics changed. (This is why I need the help of Good Researchers. No-one posted the Old Latin Phonetic to the Etymology of Jesus. I vaguely recall there are three distinct Latin variations of his name, before the Italian change.)

Q5 Annotated Etymology “Jesus” in a Latin (and then English)

Rice.edu divides Latin Hisory into ‘’about’’ 10 phases http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~kemmer/Words04/structure/latin.html
By my estimation there should be 5 (or 6 Jesus Son of Sirach) different Jesus Latin Language spellings or pronunciations.

  1. 250-100 BC — Early Latin. - The first Latin literature, usually loose translations of Greek works = I include this period because the first Jesus (ignore Hebrew Joshua), was "Jesus Son of Sirach". 3rd century bc , author of the Apocryphal book of Ecclesiasticus
  2. 100 BC-150 AD — Classical Latin. Authored by Cicero, Caesar, Vergil (Virgil), and Tacitus.
  3. 200-550 — Late Latin. - Less polished or deliberately closer to the popular speech (example St. Jerome's translation of the Bible into Latin—the Vulgate).
  4. 600-750 — Latin has become a dead language. (600CE is the same time True Hebrew was Invented) The spoken languages of Italy, France and Spain change rapidly. Monks, particularly in Ireland, read and write classical Latin and preserve ancient texts as well as church documents. The Roman Catholic church continues to use Late Latin in the liturgy, though they eventually decide to deliver homilies in the local popular language.
  5. 1100-1300 — Medieval Latin. Contact with the educated Arabs who have conquered North Africa and Spain leads to a revival of learning, especially the study of Greek and Hebrew. With the translation of works into Hebrew and Latin to replace Aramaic and Arabic works. This or the next stage may be where the “YayZues” jesus, “Y” sound happens.
  6. Possible #th Renaissance Latin 1400-1650 — During the Renaissance, which spreads from Italy to France and finally to England, people start reading Latin classical authors and bringing Latin words into their languages. In England, this is called "aureate diction". Europeans find it useful to have a universal Latinate terminology to facilitate international research. ~~ Original Photo of KJV Apocrypha with Latin English spelling is “Iefus” Source: http://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Ecclesiasticus-Chapter-1_Original-1611-KJV/
  7. Possible #th Latin/English/Irish 1769-1900 spelling of "Jesus". Need a photo of original 1611 KJV Jesus.’’’ May find “IESVS” & “Iefus”. English latin alphabet lacked a lower case “S” in the fourth stage. All the printed (s) sounds look identical to “f”. Example: http://ourladyisgod.com/images/eBooks/OriginalDouaiRheims1582-1609-1610/DouaiRheimsFirstEdition/FatimaMovement-DouaiRheimsFirstEdition-1582-1610_1508.jpg

Q9 Who Created Israel? Free & Accepted Masons (Head), Catholic York Rite (Right), KKK Scottish Rite (Left), Israel (Feet)

This is a Blurb from Elsewhere. A Lot of editing is needed to express how Free & Accepted Masons played for & against Hitler. Please forgive this edit. The links used and presidents listed took some time to research. Will Resume and redraft this section after Etymology of Jesus is work out. Most records of, or actual Aramaic Torah & Bibles have been burned or destroyed. So it will not be a short task. Signed, "Jesus lived for US" DigDeep4Truth (talk) 10:41, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

"Yishuv" is not an English Dictionary edit. "Jews in Palestine" restores the Facts. You also deleted all three citations that person made in your revision??? Your edit is a 'spoliation', as it is 'myopic' in reducing 'Zionist Movement' to a 'Jewish Agency', when it was the Zionist Movement among the USA, which led a Jewish Free & Accepted Mason, Friend to Harry S Truman (Also a F.A.M.) to convince him to conspire with the Midnight Meeting of the United Nations, by signing an 8:00AM EST document in recognition of the State of Israel (Making the USA the first to Ratify the UN motion from Midnight), without first seeking Government or National approval. i.e. some F.A.M. got together and invented Israel by using guilt on the President for the survivors of a War other Free & Accepted Masons had moved Hitler to start. Harry S Truman may not have known Masons raised Hitler to power in Europe and then smuggled Nazi to South America using the Catholic branch of F.A.M called York Rite Free & Accepted Mason. But Harry S Truman was a member of the Ku Klux Klan in 1924 for about $150 USD in today's money. And the KKK is a Zionist Movement. Removing 'Zionist Movement' from the History of Palestine is a 'spoliation' of American, United Nations, and all Human History; not just Masonic or Israeli. DigDeep4Truth (talk) 10:41, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

Not a lie. Harry S Truman joined the Ku Klux Klan before becoming President of the US. You just didn't visit the Official Klan website to read for yourself. Not just him, we had a string of KKK Presidents. But also Notice KKK as USA Presidents matches up to the Ottoman Empire being advised to Block Jews from Palestine. (It cane be proven that Freemasons precede, and fill gaps between the following lists) http://www.kkklan.com/wall.htm

  4. > President Calvin Coolidge 1923 – 1929

  1. > Theodore Roosevelt 1901-1908 ~ http://www.pbs.org/wnet/jimcrow/struggle_president.html
  2. > President William H. Taft 1909 - 1913

Theodore Roosevelt, changed the name "Executive Mansion" to "White House" in 1902. Named our Military, "The Great White Navy". And sent VP Taft to the Philippines to cover up what happened to Magellan & (Moorish) Pigafeta when he landed and discovered translated Arabic Script in the Philippines. When 3 black soldiers in Texas were accused of fighting with White people to defend themselves but then refused to come forward, Roosevelt kicked 150 Blacks military soldiers out of the armed forces for refusing to tell on each other. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/jimcrow/struggle_president.html

When President William Henry Taft selected the first movie of the "White House", he chose it to be "Birth of a Nation". That's a Klan movie. Then he selected the first Presidential car to be the "White Steam Car", even though the “Doble Steam Car" was much more reliable and better performing. His Favorite book was the Baptist Klan book "Leopard Spots".

No one refutes that Harry S. Truman joined the KKK in 1920, for about $150 in today’s money given from his own pocket. But then Truman helped a fellow Freemason who was Catholic (York Rite Mason) get a political chair and the KKK chased him out for betraying them.

Q10 Why Mohammedian & Mohammedanism? Because slander invented MussleHim (Muslim) & IsLamb (Islamb)?

Mohammedian, is novel name, much after the era of http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/10424a.htm Mohammedanism, and the original name of a Christian Cult/Sect/Denomination that begins around ~300 CE in Greece, ~411 CE in Rome, conquered Yemen in ~500CE (Caleb of Axum (preferred) / Kaleb of Aksum / Caleb of Aksum / Kaleb of Axum), then Mediterranean by 700CE-800CE or at least Medina 622CE Mohammedan Era, Mecca 630 CE, and then the Atlantic 889 CE & Feburary to May 999 CE http://www.sunnah.org/history/precolmb.htm Pre-Columbus.

While people spread gossip about who The Prophet Mohammed was, who he Married, or What he did. The Earliest of those fictional made up Biographies was nearly 150 years after his death. So no first hand interviews with the living ever occurred. => http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/10424a.htm ~ God Bless the Catholics for preserving some Facts and Honoring "Caleb of Axum" where the story really begins or reignites with Ethiopian Christians and the Ge'ez Bible. May God preserve the Ge'ez language before the "United Nations" and F.A.M. destroy the true meanings of its content.

The Fact that Mohammedian or Mohammedan was a Christian Cult, gives me hope that America and Palestine can Heal their Histories together. Aramaic Faith that gave use the Torah and New Testament may yet be resolved, even with the loss of Iraq's 400 Scholars http://www.amazon.com/Cultural-Cleansing-Iraq-Libraries-Academics/dp/0745328121 and countless Museums in the Garden of Eden, between the two rivers, with the Fruit of Knowledge people might consider both Good & Evil being inter-faith awareness of Historical Biblical in the Real World, instead of in scripture.

Q12 Why was the Ge'ez Bible removed from Misplaced Pages?

The Bible was translated into Classical Ethiopic (Ge’ez) – mainly from the Greek Septuagint

Why isn't there a Ge'ez Bible in Geez?

http://www.amazon.com/The-Apocrypha-Including-Books-Ethiopic/dp/1933580690 In Ethiopia ("And There I Was", Vol. VIII by DH Koester), in 2004, I traveled with a guide and translator to a small island in Lake Tana and there met its only resident, a priest who had lived there his entire life, never having set foot elsewhere. On this island, the Ark of the Covenant had once been kept and next to this Priests' stone abode was a cave that went back into a small hillside. It was barred by a heavy old door made from rough hewn timber and hand forged iron straps. The Priest led me into its darkened recesses where were stacked pile after pile of ancient bound transcripts and documents, most handwritten on ancient parchment--historys' first written records of mans' beginning and the origins of Christianity--most written in Ethiopias' ancient first language of Geez. The modern day King James Bible is just the tip of the iceberg known as Christianity. Studying Christianity based on the Bible was like judging the United States based on Oklahoma. Here in this cave was much of the rest of the iceberg and I sat with the Priest as he gave me his interpretation of a well known passage in the Bible. I thought its meaning was clear to me but I was wrong and hearing his interpretation was like bringing me out of the dark halls of ignorance into the bright daylight of insight and wisdom. He had spent his entire life on that island studying the cave of texts and now I saw the necessity of having a Priest explain Biblical passages to laymen such as I.

If you want to call yourself a Christian, here is my advice: Get this book--read it cover to cover--make a pilgrimage to Armenia and then Ethiopia--study their rich history, visit their incredible churches get to know their people. Then you will be able to truly claim you are Christian. Then you will once again become excited about and proud in both your religon and your new-found knowledge. Get this book--it will be a treasure to you and to those to whom you pass it down. It will make of you a new person--reborn and wise.

Q16 The Aramaic Quest to Find and Restore "Iefus" True Name Continues 2014 0130

Readying to take part in discussing after hording here. Found out "Yeshua" was invented around 1700CE as an outcry against Hebrews saying it was "Yeshu". Suddenly makes the English "Iefus" more reliable and endearing. Though "Eesa" will likely win, as the proof comes in. Now to start making a list of articles to track and update. Hopefully I will solve the etymology of Jesus and the it must be Hebrew dunderhead theories, even though the New Testament and the Torah as all in Aramaic first and Palestinian Aramaic was the Defacto Torah or Tanakh of Jesus's Time. ` DigDeep4Truth (talk) 23:50, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

Q17 What if the Bible is a collection of stories from Around the Middle East and not just one tribes story?

Why don't more people study the Bible in the Context of Time, instead of Time in the Context of the Bible? Shouldn't an accurate study of history come before the bible. The bible is a story set time, not the measure of time.

Q19 Palestine Region / Israel: a man, a tribe, a people, but never more of a "nation" than the "Cherokee Nation"

  1. Quote pre-1,000BCE Egypt
  2. The first clear use of the term Palestine to refer to the entire area between Phoenicia & Egypt was in 5th century BC Ancient Greece. Herodotus wrote of a 'district of Syria, called Palaistinê" in The Histories, the first historical work clearly defining the region, which included the Judean mountains & Jordan Rift Valley.
  3. Approximately a century later, Aristotle used a similar definition in Meteorology, writing "Again if, as is fabled, there is a lake in Palestine, such that if you bind a man or beast and throw it in it floats and does not sink, this would bear out what we have said. They say that this lake is so bitter and salt that no fish live in it and that if you soak clothes in it and shake them it cleans them," understood by scholars to be a reference to the Dead Sea.
