May 2014 disambig contest: let's do it again!

Greetings fellow disambiguator! Remember back in February when we made history by clearing the board for the first time ever, for the monthly disambiguation contest? Let's do it again in May! I personally will be aiming to lead the board next month, but for anyone who thinks they can put in a better effort, I will give a $10 Amazon gift card to any editor who scores more disambiguation points in May. Also, I will be setting up a one-day contest later in the month, and will try to set up more prizes and other ways to make this a fun and productive month. Cheers! bd2412 T 18:51, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

American Hustle Accolades Page

Hello. Hope you're well. Corvoe and I recently nominated American Hustle's accolades page (Link) for FL. Since you've made a number of featured lists, it would be really helpful if could cast your expert eye on its quality and make a comment. Misplaced Pages:Featured list candidates/List of accolades received by American Hustle/archive1? Many thanks for your assistance. Cowlibob (talk) 22:27, 29 April 2014 (UTC)

I'll see if I can find some time this afternoon to have a look. Cheers. The Rambling Man (talk) 11:17, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

Seven years

Hi The Rambling Man, it's your seventh anniversary of being an administrator here. Congratulations! Thanks for all the work you've done as an admin - and the work you did as a bureaucrat - and will continue to do. I remember supporting your RfA (and B!) and I don't have any regrets whatsoever about doing so: I think you've done a great job and I'm glad you're still active. I hope you're well! Best. Acalamari 08:56, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

Wow, thanks, time flies! The Rambling Man (talk) 09:00, 3 May 2014 (UTC)
seven years!!, passing by, saw this, and thought my thanks and appreciation were in order as well. Edmund Patrick confer 11:13, 3 May 2014 (UTC)
Thank you Edmund. Been to see the Magna Carta yet? I'm sure you have... I must find some time this week coming... The Rambling Man (talk) 13:50, 3 May 2014 (UTC)
I have, got in at the test run / preview only 17 minute wait! Not sure what the fuss is about really, never understood a bit of parchment that gave men with big swords some share of stuff from man with bigger sword, but actually a couple of sound principles managed to slip through, so maybe I do! Recommend that you book a timeslot via the apex or west Suffolk diary. Edmund Patrick confer 19:37, 4 May 2014 (UTC)
Cool. Well it's the principle really, isn't it? I visited the Treaty of Waitangi and found myself the only person in New Zealand seeing it, through a vault door the width of my body. Was quite effective (and terribly sad) seeing how the tribal chiefs all signed their land away with a mere "X". Thanks for the heads-up. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:06, 4 May 2014 (UTC)

ITN & FLC request

Hi TRM! Could I trouble you for two favours, namely taking a quick look at my ITN co-nom (which is 4 days old but lacking support votes), as well as reviewing my FLC nom? Cheers! —Bloom6132 (talk) 13:08, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

Can't make too many promises this weekend, but I'll see what I can do, I'll certainly get to your FLC in due course. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:09, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

GA reviews

Hi TRM, I was just wondering if, in GA reviews, asking the reviewer questions regarding their suggested changes is acceptable? Thanks, Matty.007 19:58, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

Of course it is, although I've had a rather unpleasant GA review recently where I spent several hours reviewing a lengthy article only to be informed my standards were "ridiculous" so perhaps I'm not the best man for the job if you want an easy ride. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:07, 3 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply (it was a general question, not about your review, which I am very grateful for). Congratulations on your 7 anniversary! Thanks, Matty.007 17:42, 4 May 2014 (UTC)

Chikungunya ITN

Could you take another look at the chikungunya ITN and possibly post it? I believe I have fixed the lead, as per your request. I'm not sure what I can do about Spencer's request since there is already two paragraphs on the current situation and I can't think of anything that might be missing. --ThaddeusB (talk) 03:00, 5 May 2014 (UTC)

Why?

The hook for the DYK Farmland was not erroneous. Why did you think it was? I am One of Many (talk) 15:00, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

The people weren't actors. The Rambling Man (talk) 15:12, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
Just because they weren't professional actors does not mean that they are not actors. They are sourced as the cast of the movies. They shot many scenes. There was a director. This hook was reviewed by several editors here. In this case, there were better ways to handle this--given what you believed--than saying the hook was erroneous. You could have, for example, changed actors to "people" or "the cast". This would have been far more acceptable than calling the hook erroneous. I am One of Many (talk) 15:38, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
Reworking the hook to make it the dullest hook ever featured on the main page? Nein dank. That set is off the main page now, and good riddance. Let's hope for some actually interesting DYK hooks in future. The Rambling Man (talk) 15:41, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
There is no need to respond by insulting my DYK entry. You were mistaken in your judgement that the hook was "erroneous"Cast of Farmland. I'm not going to respond to your "dullest" comments. I believe our conversation is finished. I am One of Many (talk) 16:52, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
Did the word "actor" even appear on the article?! Good one. The Rambling Man (talk) 16:56, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
I understand that you have a strong disagreement about what is an "actor" is, but a cast member of a movie is considered an actor. In this case, the actors played themselves. You could have changed "actors" to "cast members" without loosing meaning. I would have had no complaint. I know you consider it the dullest hook ever, but please consider in the future that there are a number of editors and other administrators that work pretty hard to keep DYK going and it passed their judgements. Unless a hook is blatantly erroneous, which this was not, some consultation would be best before removing it from a protected page in my opinion. I am One of Many (talk) 17:31, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
Unless I'm mistaken, you said "I believe our conversation is finished". Those people who work "pretty hard to keep DYK going" aren't working hard enough I'm afraid. The Rambling Man (talk) 17:42, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
"Did you know that... the people featured in a documentary about farming are farmers?" Well, silly me, there I was expecting them to be deep-sea divers. Thank goodness DYK was there to correct me. Bencherlite 19:34, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
Yes, another example of DYK on the path to self-destruction. At the very least some of us saner folks are offering ways to help, e.g. slow it down, fewer noms, fewer changes, more eyes on noms, but it's not really getting through, is it? Did you know.... that the DYK portion of the main page is becoming a running joke? Uh, yes, we all did. The Rambling Man (talk) 19:37, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

ITN Homs Withdrawal

Would you reconsider your opposition to this item? The title was pure POV flame-baiting but the news itself I think is important. It is not just that the rebels seem to be losing in this area and the line is shifting; the UN and Iran have negotiated a truce allowing everyone to leave Homs, with weapons, and they are doing it. I've updated the blurb to try to make it clearer. GoldenRing (talk) 11:38, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

The dots

Hi, I thought there was consensus some time ago to d.r.o.p. the dots, as many FCs have done. Tony (talk) 03:38, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

Doesn't make much sense if the articles remain at Arsenal F.C. and Manchester United F.C. though, does it? The Rambling Man (talk) 06:19, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
Mmmm ... I hadn't thought of that. Tony (talk) 14:08, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

I remember a big barney in my early days on this site, at WT:CRIC, about W.G. Grace's dots! Personally, I don't really care either way, lol, but consistency would be good. Tony, is your full name Tony Consistency 1? Click here. --Dweller (talk) 14:14, 9 May 2014 (UTC) Cover your eyes if you must click this. --Dweller (talk) 14:18, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

On This Day

Rambling, (can I call you that) advice appreciated. Monday 11th August this year is the same day of the week as it was in 1828 when William Corder was hanged for the Red Barn Murder. It has been listed before but how would I recommend it being listed again, especially as he had to wait the extra 24 hours as they did not hang on a Sunday! I have had a look and might be missing the link! Ta, Edmund Patrick confer 05:48, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
