Unit of selection

I've reverted a large & confusing Marcosantezana edit on Unit of selection, and tried to expland the article on my own. However, I don't know so much about it really, and I just saw you admit to being a biologist, so I thought I'd invite you to fix it. JeffBurdges 19:11, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Samsara, thanks for your recent edits at Unit of selection. I tried to reorganize things and simplify, making a concession to Marco's "edition," although immediately afterward he went and added more convoluted stuff. I don't think the right thing to do is neccessarily jump back to Jeff's (better as a final edit) simplified version. Then again, I'm fairly new to wikipedia. I certainly don't want to get into an edit war. There is tons of work that needs to be done on this article, and Marco does know something about the subject, however convoluted his writing and difficult he is to "collaborate" with. There's nothing that can stop you from contacting anyone you want in the hope's they'll participate, but I was hoping you'd leave me out as a courtesy. Advice

Hello. I have been a new member to Misplaced Pages for a few months and haven't found one area where I could make a significant impact. However, I am extremely interested in Biology and I believe that I can become more immersed into Misplaced Pages by focusing on a certain theme of pages. Since I noticed that on most Biology related pages, you are regarded as an authority for the subject, I wanted to come to you and ask how which Wikiprojects you would recommend I join within the large subject of Biology. So far I have only been monitoring the Evolution article and casually viewing the genetics, darwinism, abiogenesis, and similarly themed pages. I hope to hear from you soon. • Thanks for the advice, but I'm still getting my feet wet in Biology. I currently dont have that much experience in the subject so I expect to be just a generalist that does minor edits, at least for now. What I did notice was that the Biology side sites about Ammonia and the Nitrogen Waste are weak or non-existant. For example, the Urea_cycle, Nitrogen_Cycle, and its sub-pages could use some attention. Also I wasn't sure if there were any articles making reference to the differences between Urea, Uric Acid, and Ammonia and why some animals favor production of one substance over another.--Jonthecheet 08:59, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

Biobarnstar

Hi Samsara, you wrote regarding the biobarnstar suggestion "Oppose until the design is shown to be biologically meaningful. All I see is randomly selected patterns. Biologists deserve better." Please allow me to say that if you had spent 3 hours designing a 1st draft, you would have liked a kinder comment. But it shows me that the design is not sufficiently clear. In reference to Bio-barnstar proposal: What is the next move?

There was much talk lately about the bio-barnstar proposal, but these past 5 days there hasn't been more said. What is next? What is there to be done? Can we move this foward...? Sorry, but I don't know how I was meant to get the "facts". You FPC description was worded like you were trying to find a quality bird photo worthy of FP into the article. It is not up to you to put that photo up for FP, you can replace the taxobox image with the original, and if that contributor pipes up and complains, you have a very good argument that it is a FP, and the other is not. Dual inheritance theory

Kim's RfA

Thanks for your comments on the page for KimvdLinde's RfA. It is true that Marcos was way out of line. However, Pete Hurd and I were able to work with editing Heritability without having to go to arbitration. Maybe it was because there weren't so many editors. Possibly, it was because we were better able to understand was Marcos was trying to say and treated it as a criticism of the current way. That meant we could change the wording to improve the clarity, without so much acrimony.

I actually had some constructive conversations with Kim early on, but was turned off by three events: The first was when everyone else had worked on the first paragraph (including me) and had pretty much decided it was OK. She said it was worse than Marcos' version. The second was her trying to frame the argument as modern (her definition) vs Darwinian. In this case, I thought she used Darwinian as a perjorative statement. The last was a brief interaction with her on the Quantitative genetics page (by then, I was fed up, so I gave up quickly). Making the disambiguation page was totally out of line, whoever came up with the idea. Disambiguation pages are designed to direct readers to different articles with the same name. I viewed this as part of her efforts to marginalize those who do not believe exactly as she does.

What is even more depressing about the entire thing is that, for the most part, I agree with her. Her views of quantitative traits are unusual, but it wasn't a big deal -- I simply added my material to the heritability page rather than the quantitative genetics page.

We will see how well things go in the next month or so as editors work on her version of natural selection. I'll probably contribute, as the figure is not annotated very well.

Thanks for the comments. I only brought it up since it seems that we are starting to go back into the name-calling again. ( or ). It may be too early, and it is probably futile. I see the alternative as continual edit reversions as editors grow weary of the process. Look at all the qualified editors who no longer visit this site because of the problems.

About Fedora Core

Which things do you want me to add links to? I have not added nothing new. I have just restructured the page.

I noticed one of your comments on the Fedora core talk page, namely "I think this really should expand into a more general discussion of what is an acceptable reference. If my website is going to be disallowed from being a source on Misplaced Pages simply because I contribute to the project, I'll cease to be a Wikipedian gladly, with immediate effect."

Others on the debate went on to point out that anyone can obtain a personal web site and post anything. So for me, a highly reputable web site starts with a a famous domane name, i.e. www.whitehouse.gov, which would surely be the subject of legal action if it were camped on by some minor player. If this isn't possible, at least it should be possible to view the site with the browser privacy settings set to the highest level. I browsed your website, http://www.philippwesche.org/, with Internet Explorer v. 6.0, with security settings set to high, and it appeared as a blank page. Therefore it would be unsuitable for use as a reference in Misplaced Pages.

Perhaps if the website were readable, I would have found information that would convince me it is a reputable source. In any case, my interest is in discussing reputable sources, not Fedora (my Red Hat computer is a 10-year old Aptiva and it isn't even plugged in anymore.) Gerry Ashton 20:57, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

References for the Natural Selection article

I do not ask for a specific number of references since every aspect should be referenced and I mean twice or three times for important informations such as dabatable statistics or arguable details given by experts on the subject. I would go for around 100 references on that subject but 40 refs and this article will possibly pass next time it is in the GA nominations. Oh, the Linux User and Developer stub thing. It is because you have it listed under a 'See Also' list which should really only contain active articles due to its nature of saying 'this article is about this, you may also be interested in this'. If the article doesn't exist, it cannot fulfill that function and is pointless. If it is inline with normal text, I would have no issue with it.

{{evolution}} edit link

On a general level, I tend to disapprove of edit links in templates, especially for templates that are not at risk of frequent editing. It encourages "box lenght cruft", for lack of a better term, especially in top-right boxes, and increases incorrect edit by inexperienced user in a "sensitive" spacename (risk of damaging lots of article).

However, I can't remember why exactly I remove the edit link in {{evolution}}, so I won't revert its adition, even though I don't perceive it as anything near necessary. Circeus 23:37, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

random comment on cite templates

I noticed this on your user page: "when to use {{cite web}} vs. {{cite journal}}; whether to use a general news site or journal reference". You appear to confuse {{cite journal}}, which is a template for academic journal (although similar publications, like magazines, easily translate into it) with {{cite news}}, the template used for news sources (mostly from the internet, although it seems obvious that non-web sources work just as well with it). ubuntu vandal

thx for coming to my page. no i didnt come via WP:AID. I come because of a bad ubuntu installation during last days. i am without internet now which is really bad. Nice that you do so much work on linux, i saw this after having called you a vandal. btw.. you are certainly not a vandal, by the criteria of WP:VANDAL .. reallly good work to do on linux. i have a debian server with my ISP and now wanted to start linux at home on my desktop, but probably will switch back to windows XP for the time being. pppd and pppoe stuff is not working. and my screen is not recognized correctly, lucky that i had the alternate CD and could use text install. graphic install was impossible without screen recognition.

the cats: i read your edit sum. but IMO it was exagerated. and it seemed you did not read the commented section near the cat links, explaining why there is a sense for that they stay. i did not read this before, i just added the cats because i felt they where missing. from other WP articles i am used to the policy described there (main article can go in the above cat)
