- 2016 Summer Olympics - Host city to be chosen in 2009. Montreal, Canada will make a run at it, to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the prior Olympics of 1976 that were held in the city. Chicago, IL is also expected to be the front-runner for the bid from the United States.
- The final volume of the Complete Peanuts Collection will be released, probably in October, though no date has been set.

- Highest tower in the world (more than 1,000 metres), located in Argentina, should be finished.
- The right for the US forces to use Diego Garcia in the Chagos Islands as a military base will end at this year, but there'll be a provision for an automatic extension for another 20 years for the US forces to remain stationed on the island.
