On March 24, 2014, ABC and ET Canada announced that season 5 would start on July 17 and that ABC and Global would be airing half the episodes this summer and the rest "at a later date".

On April 4, 2014, ABC announced the season will premiere on June 19, 2014.

On April 11, Global announced the season premiere was May 19, a month ahead of its American counterpart, a first for the series.

Season 5 introduced two new characters. Oliver Becker as Inspector John Jarvis and Matt Murray as Rookie Duncan Moore.

Starting with season 5, Adam MacDonald (Det. Steve Peck), is now a series regular.
