This user is busy in real life and may not respond swiftly to queries. |
I absolutely despise talkpage templates. Please do not use them on my page, if you really want to keep my goodwill. If you do use one, by all the gods, sign it so it archives and put it in its own section! |
PLEASE NOTE: I'm trying to actually edit those pesky things called articles more, and spend less time on other stuff at Misplaced Pages. (Thus, why I'm no longer doing much at FLC) Please understand that it might take me a while to respond to your requests for a source review, etc. I'll note that if you've done favors for me in the past, I'm MUCH more likely to jump at things quickly. (In other words, I can be bribed.) Thanks, guys. |
I prefer to keep both sides of my discussions together. If you leave me a message here, I will reply here. But if I left a note on your talk page, feel free to reply there or here, as I'm watching your page for a bit. |
If you want me to look at something, either an article or a peer review or a GAN or FAC, please please please include a link. I get a lot of requests for this sort of thing, and it's a lot easier if you include a link. |

Revert
Hello, Ealdgyth. I'm sure you know what I meant to do with that edit, so could you please teach me the best way to do it? Each wiki is different in that particular aspect, unfortunately. Should I use a wikisource link? A template? After more than 2000 translations, I'm pretty sure that external links are, by far, the most common way to quote the Bible here though... Thank you in advance. José Luiz 00:48, 13 July 2014 (UTC)
- See WP:External links#Important points to remember #2 where its stated that "External links should not normally be used in the body of an article." I also have two other concerns with that edit - one - if the source being quoted doesn't give the chapter and verse (and it's unlikely that it does since seems to be a quote direct from Cuthbert), then adding to the quote the verse number is original research. Two, the MOS frowns on linking within quotations - see Misplaced Pages:Manual of style#Quotations the section "Linking" where it's stated that "As much as possible, avoid linking from within quotes, which may clutter the quotation, violate the principle of leaving quotations unchanged, and mislead or confuse the reader." Ealdgyth - Talk 08:56, 13 July 2014 (UTC)
- Ok. As tiresome as it may be just to make a point, let me try one more time. I'm not trying to quote anything or anyone; Cuthbert said Bede was doing it in the quote reproduced in the article ("And he used to repeat that sentence from St. Paul "It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God") and what I am really trying to do is clarify to the reader (most likely someone not as knowledgeable in this as you are) what sentence " used to repeat... from St. Paul". As per OR concerns, what do you think of The Wanderer: Elegies, Epics, Riddles? I think it's not that difficult to find more scholars who made the association for the exact same reason using JSTOR for instance. Thank you. José Luiz 21:53, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
- Unless the quotation (which starts "And he used to repeat..") also has that citation inserted in it, it is not correct to insert it. We do not insert stuff not in the quotation - which implies that the original source of the quotation said something. Quotations must be quoted exactly without extraneous information (I would prefer to remove the links to St Paul, but that's not as big a deal as inserting something not in the original). Ealdgyth - Talk 22:08, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
- Pardon me for jumping in. José Luiz, I would suggest that you add a note, using the {{efn}} template, that gives this information. It's the sort of thing a reader might be curious about, but it should not be inserted into the quote itself, and I don't think it's necessary to have it in the main text. I'd suggest adding the note after the citation at the end of the verse. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 22:21, 26 July 2014 (UTC)

Apologies
Sorry about my edit to Richard Barre. Somehow I missed the note and I assumed that the fact had simply been missed.--Auric talk 00:00, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
- No worries. If the book on the green children wasn't so famous, I'd not even mention the speculations ... but... Ealdgyth - Talk 00:04, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
