April 2011. I had to prepare for my third-year engineering exams, but I wasn't interested in semiconductors or electromagnetism. I was more interested in reading up on film literature. Among various other thoughts that crossed my mind that spring was why there was so little meaningful information on Bollywood films on the net. The Misplaced Pages articles on my favourite Hindi film actors and actresses were either outdated or were quite atrociously written. The only article of value was that of Preity Zinta, and I realised that there was a lot of work to be done here. I wasn't going to learn more about transistors, so I decided to help expand the encyclopedia. Today, I'm glad I made that decision, though not so glad that my grades were ehm... so average. My first major contribution was in promoting The Dirty Picture, a film I liked solely due to the presence of the outrageously talented Vidya Balan, to a good article status. I liked the "prestige" of the symbol, and I was soon hooked. I went on to expand some other articles of my favourite films and celebrities. By mid-2012, I had set my sights on writing my first featured article. And who could be a better subject than Balan herself. Encouraged by such wonderful editors as Dr. Blofeld and Dwaipayanc, I soon had my first FAC success. Over the last year or so, I have written 11 featured lists, mostly filmographies of actors and actresses, which has also been highly enjoyable.
I'll try to explain my choice of subjects. Historically, actresses have had a raw deal in Hindi films. They work well in their 20s and early-30s, but are soon forced to "retire". Over time I realised that leading ladies in mainstream Hindi cinema are "marketable" only until they can be lust after by the "straight Indian man". The sexism is widespread, and it made me angry. That's why I decided to work on the biographies of actresses who in some way fought against these limitations. Balan, I believe, is a pioneer in this movement. Her choice of film roles, whether in playing a manipulative widow in Ishqiya or a mysterious pregnant woman in Kahaani, among others, changed the game for actresses and how! The other ladies I have written about — Rani Mukerji, Deepika Padukone, and Kangana Ranaut — have all broken the stereotypes expected of them, and that's probably why I was interested in investing so much of my energy on them. Among the leading men in the industry, I admire Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan and Ranbir Kapoor for their craft as well as their desire to bridge the art-commerce gap.
My first username was my real name, and I soon realised how much of a mistake that was. A fan of a famous actress found my true identity and posted such abusive messages on my Facebook and Twitter that I had to change my username. And that's how Krimuk was born. I don't really know what "Krimuk" means, but it sounds suitably creepy, so I like it. I love contributing here, and even when I am not actively editing, I am admittedly obsessed with keeping my "watchlist" free from vandalism. But I must admit how negative the editing atmosphere is at times. There are some fan-boys who are so abusive that I feel my entire obsession to improve these articles is an utter waste of time and energy. Yes, there are times when I lose my cool and lash out, and that's when I take a mini-break, watch a great film or two and come back. And the cycle continues...
