"Misplaced Pages has the possibility of being both the greatest informational source in human history, or the most corrupt propaganda dissemination tool imaginable." (source)

- Richard Horton, editor-in-chief of The Lancet, April 2015:
"The case against science is straightforward: much of the scientific literature, perhaps half, may simply be untrue. Afflicted by studies with small sample sizes, tiny effects, invalid exploratory analyses, and flagrant conflicts of interest, together with an obsession for pursuing fashionable trends of dubious importance, science has taken a turn towards darkness."
"The mistake, of course, is to have thought that peer review was any more than a crude means of discovering the acceptability — not the validity — of a new finding. Editors and scientists alike insist on the pivotal importance of peer review. We portray peer review to the public as a quasi-sacred process that helps to make science our most objective truth teller. But we know that the system of peer review is biased, unjust, unaccountable, incomplete, easily fixed, often insulting, usually ignorant, occasionally foolish, and frequently wrong."
"(Medical) journals have devolved into information laundering operations for the pharmaceutical industry."

- I can't think of a better incentive for encouraging editors to improve articles or for recruiting new volunteers to our wonderful encyclopedia... I thought the following was pretty interesting, too: Why is Misplaced Pages losing contributors - Thinking about remedies. But hey, look at the bright side - WP won't run out of editors, at least for a while anyway. Outfits like Guerrilla Skeptics are busy recruiting new
advocateseditors every day: . I think SlimVirgin is well aware of what's going on, and I commend her efforts for actually trying to keep a handle on things.
- It's pretty obvious why big $$$ has such an intense interest in WP - I can't think of a better place for them to peddle their wares, and that includes all aspects of it from mainstream to fringe. In the interim, editors will keep being cautioned (intimidated, actually) to not say anything negative about mainstream and they'll be kept in line with multiple DS notices advising everyone to mind our Ps and Qs while the travesties continue and those we once looked up to turn a blind eye. . The sad part is the fact that the hands of conventional or orthodox whatever you want to call it are not clean, either. . Yet, your biggest concern is over a little old BLP about an author who tried to expose the corruption. Has anybody noticed how much money FDA approved meds and treatments take in while they criticize alternative (now integrative according to Mayo), calling them quacks and charlatans for scamming people out of their money? . Me thinks the lady doth protest too much. Atsme☯

Help please
This photo seems to be available for free usage...? Could you try to import it for my Gandy dancer article? Thanks. Gandydancer (talk) 16:18, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Gandy ~ great image, but I don't see any indication that it's available. I know how to import form Flickr, but I'm clueless what to do about this one. petrarchan47คุก 17:08, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
- Did you click "user rights"? Gandydancer (talk) 17:57, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
- I wonder if Epic Genius could help? Gandydancer (talk) 18:02, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
- Now that's a good suggestion. I'm unsure where the "user rights" button is on Google images. (By the way, Gandy, this 2016 race is getting incredibly exciting! Thank you for pulling me into the mix.) petrarchan47คุก 18:23, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

- Yes, it is very interesting indeed. At first my main concern was the "socialist" thing, but as it turns out these people are either too young or too smart to equate socialist=commie...and there's one lurking around every corner that wants to take away your freedom...bullshit. Finally we will have a real choice after years of being afraid to vote for the one you wanted to for fear of putting the Republican contender into office. And what about Pope Francis! I was raised Catholic but what with the war in Vietnam I had no choice but to move away from that. The churches always go with the choices made by the warlords. Not that I was such a believer or anything, but it was as much as saying that I was headed for hell, to say nothing of what I had done to my innocent children, back then. Though all in all, I now appreciate the richness of my Catholic upbringing and find myself frequently thankful when I compare it to what I would have received if I had been brought up Protestant.
- OK, back to the photo. On my screen there are 4 or 5 tabs above the photo, including the one I mention. Those guys in the photo were real gandy dancers. I made sure that I mentioned a couple of them in the article and would like to mention all of them. Just today, and quite by accident, I found some new info and will be adding it to the article shortly. I'm thinking of working for a GA on the article. We'll see. It's very hard to find info, and even more so photos, of black people from those years. Though there are quite a few of lynching--they were sold as postcards. If I ever do an article from brand new, it will be Lynching postcards. Gandydancer (talk) 19:56, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
- Aloha friends — hope you don't mind me butting in. As far as I can tell, the photo comes from the 1988 gandy dancer reunion in Alabama, and was taken by Maggie Holtzberg. The Alabama Department of Archives and History has a copy of the photo on their website which says "courtesy of the Alabama State Council on the Arts and Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark". If the photo were owned by the latter and taken under their auspices it would be public domain, since National Historic Landmarks fall under the jurisdiction of the federal government. If the former, perhaps not, since most state governments do not automatically put their materials in the public domain. If the photo is actually owned by Dr. Holzberg herself, and it may be, perhaps she could be prevailed upon (maggie.holtzberg@art.state.ma.us; 617-858-2713) to contribute the photo to Wikimedia Commons. I'm sure she will feel gratified that she is already cited as a leading expert in the Misplaced Pages article! shalom, groupuscule (talk) 21:14, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you Group! petrarchan47คุก 00:35, 13 July 2015 (UTC)
- I suppose we can email Dr. Holtzberg about this image and ask her if she released the image for free use.
If it was taken in her duty as a U.S. government worker (i.e. as a National Historic Landmark, which are federally operated), it may be assumed to be public domain. If it was taken in the capacity as a state government worker, then public domain does not necessarily apply. See the US Government webpage about this. Epic Genius (talk) 01:52, 13 July 2015 (UTC)
- Don't mind! I could hardly be more thrilled that you are taking an interest. Yes, Maggie. If I could I would give her a big kiss for what she has done to help us all to understand the almost forgotten role that the black Americans played to shape this country. The debt that we owe to them is beyond measure, IMO. Maggie came in just in time to speak with the few living gandy dancers and their families that were left. One guy that she spoke with while she was looking for living gandy dancers said he thought that she'd need a medium if she expected to contact any of them. But she did find a few. As to speaking with her, while I was working on the article I did attempt to contact her through email, but she did not respond. But I will try the phone # that you offered. (The last time I tried to phone was to do with the Maroon people, and I did get through to him.) Stay tuned! Gandydancer (talk) 22:02, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
- BTW, re the Alabama info--their info really helped a lot with the article as well. I did try to phone them while I was working on the article but it was not productive--it's been perhaps a couple of years now and I can't remember any particulars... Gandydancer (talk) 22:20, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
- After listening to a couple of his speeches lately, some notes: "Socialist Democrat", as in Denmark. He wants to rid the US of the embarrassment of being the only advanced country that doesn't provide healthcare, whilst charging the most for it and witnessing an increasingly unhealthy population. He thinks it's smart to educate the people, for free, and to allow the billionaires to use their hearts, and pay a little more in taxes to help the majority who are impoverished. Warren Buffet famously said that he pays a lower percentage in taxes than his secretary. That's just ridiculous. You can imagine though, that people who aren't feeling so ready to share and care may be ready to fight pretty hard. Come to think of it, we should have fixed those hack-able voting machines. (If we can bank online safely, it seems we should be able to come up with a reliable voting system... ) petrarchan47คุก 00:35, 13 July 2015 (UTC)
