David Zaharakis (born 21 February 1990) is a professional Australian rules footballer, currently playing for the Essendon Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL), who is of Greek heritage.

Early life

Zaharakis attended Our Lady Help of Christians, finishing Year 12 in 2008 at Marcellin College where he also won the Terrence Cleary Memorial Sporting Award for sportsmanship and sporting excellence. He played for the Northern Knights in the TAC Cup, and was drafted by Essendon with pick 23 in the 2008 National Draft, the team he supported all his life.

He played his junior football with the Eltham Panthers in the Northern Football League. He supports both Melbourne Victory and Everton.

AFL career

He was awarded the number 11 guernsey which was previously worn by Damien Peverill and has been his number throughout most of his junior career. He kicked his first career goal in the final seconds of the 2009 Anzac Day match to beat Collingwood by five points.

His 2011 season was his most consistent and impressive season to date, and he capped off the year by winning his first Crichton Medal, awarded to the best and fairest player.

He suffered a quad injury on the eve of the NAB Cup challenge and it took him most of the season to find his form. He won the Anzac Day Medal for a brilliant four-goal, 34-disposal game against Collingwood. He continued to show pace and class in the bombers midfield, before a heavy knock on his back and suffered a cracked bone, which restricted his run in the latter stages of the year.

It has been revealed by Zaharakis' manager that he did not take any part in Essendon's 2012 controversial sport science program that has since put the club under scrutiny by the AFL and ASADA (the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority) during the 2013 season.
