Dieuson Octave, (born June 11, 1997), better known by his stage name Kodak Black, is an American rapper born and raised in Pompano Beach, Florida.
Early life and career
Dieuson Octave was born in Pompano Beach, Florida. His parents were immigrants from Haiti. Kodak was raised by his mother in Golden Acres, a public housing project in Pompano Beach.
Kodak began rapping with his cousins at age 12 while in elementary school. He then became affiliated with the local rap group "Brutal Youngnz", and then with the "Kolyons".
Kodak was placed into a juvenile detention center three times in one year, and then placed on probation.
In 2014, Kodak was working towards his high school diploma at Blanche Ely High School.
In 2015, Canadian rapper Drake posted a video of himself dancing to one of Kodak's singles, Skrt, which raised his stardom.
In October 2015, Kodak was arrested in Pompano Beach and charged with robbery, battery, false imprisonment of a child, and possession of cannabis. He was released from custody, and shortly after signed a deal with Atlantic Records.
Kodak and rapper Lil Uzi Vert announced their intention to partner for a national tour called the "Parental Advisory Tour" in 2016.
In April 2016, Kodak was arrested in Hallandale Beach, Florida and charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, possession of cannabis, and fleeing from officers.
In May 2016, Kodak was arrested in Broward County, Florida and charged with armed robbery and false imprisonment. He was detained in custody.
Music
In December 2013, Kodak released his first mixtape, Project Baby.
On December 26, 2015, Kodak released the mixtape, Institution.
On February 19, 2016, French Montana released a single from his upcoming second studio album MC4, Lockjaw, which features Kodak Black.
On June 11, 2016, Kodak released the mixtape, Lil B.I.G. Pac on his birthday while incarcerated.
The subject matter of Kodak's music is frequently about "previous and future criminal misdeeds", and Octave has been influenced by rappers Lil Boosie and Chief Keef.
Kodak was features in The New Yorker, which described his "manifestly youthful voice" and "mutinous sound", and stated "Octave joins other young rappers who have rejected an old-school emphasis on lyrical variety, individualism, and personal catharsis".
