The Rakata are a fictional species from the '']'' universe video game '']'' (]).

==The Infinite Empire==
The Rakata were roughly humanoid in body structure with amphibian-like features. Their cranial shape and their Egyptian-themed architecture is reminiscent of the elongated pharonic crown, or the green-skinned deity Osiris. The language of the Rakata is Rakatan. They developed an advanced technology that combined conventional technology and the ] tens of thousands of years before the formation of the ]. They used this advantage to conquer and enslave other species, forming an "]" of five hundred subjected planetary systems. At its height, the population of this empire was ten billion Rakata and one trillion slaves. It has been speculated that the Rakata may have created ] in the ] system, and been responsible for bringing the inhabited planets of that system there. However, there is no clear-cut evidence in the matter.

The most famous technological feat of the Infinite Empire was the Star Forge. It is also believed that the Rakata used a "Mysterious Box" to hold their prisoners in a bodiless state as seen on the video game, ]. Its also hinted that they brought hyper space travel to the other races in the game.

The Rakata were described as a cruel and savage species. Rakata were known to defile the bodies of slain enemies by eating them, and they also practiced ]. An endless stream of supplies was needed to continue the expansion of their empire. To this end, they created the ]. The Star Forge met the Rakata's need for ]s and war ] -- but at a terrible price.

==Technology and the Star Forge==
The Rakatans were the only race known to have built machines that could tap into ]. It is quite possible that the Rakatans were once a relatively noble race, but became warped by their own technology. The true end of the Infinite Empire occurred when the Rakatan race, in total, lost the ability to feel The Force. This rendered all of their technology impotent and left them stranded on their homeworld.

The Star Forge was powered by the ]. Rakata scientists and engineers were unconcerned that the Star Forge would have access to a near-limitless supply of energy. They believed that they could control it.

As a semi-living entity, the Star Forge gorged itself on this Dark Side power, and it used this insidious ability to manipulate the Force to cause the Rakata to fall out amongst themselves in a devastating ]. The hate and anger created in this war fed the Star Forge.

Matters became even worse when a deadly ] that killed only Rakata broke out. (It is theorized that the plague was the creation of a slave species.)

==Downfall and the arrival of Revan==
The Infinite Empire collapsed under the weight of the civil war and the plague. The Rakata retreated to their home system and fell into total ]. The "Infinite Empire" ended no more than 5,000 ] prior to the foundation of the Old Republic, as stated by ] (approximately 24-25,000 ]). It is unknown when the Infinite Empire began.

The Rakata species was driven to near extinction during their civil war, and many of the survivors lived in relatively small groups, isolated from each other. Millenia of infighting between these groups decimated the population further. Ultimately, the surviving Rakata population was not large enough to sustain the species. The Rakata went extinct an unspecified number of centuries after the destruction of the Star Forge by Republic forces.
