==Description==
I am writing as the President of Kepler College. Kepler College was founded in 1991 in Seattle as a private, liberal arts college. After nine years of organization and development, the curriculum and instructional designs were approved by the Washington State Higher Education Coordinating Board and the college was authorized to grant Bachelor's of Arts degrees in 2000. Since the college opened its doors in 2000 an Associate's of Arts and a Master's of Arts degee have been authorized by the State HECB . Kepler College was named after Johannes Kepler, the late medieval astronomer/astrologer/mathematician, and its integrated and coordinated programs of study focus on a cross-cultural comparison of the history, astonomy, social and cultural role of astrology for the past 3000 years, including how it has been used in the sciences, politics, medicine, literature and other social institutions. As part of this study, the mathematics and application is examined using techniques ranging from the Vedic to Western systems and from the Hellenistic period through to modern day.

As one faculty member found at 2003 History of Science conference held at Cambridge, MA, and another at the Horoscopes & History conference held at the University of Amsterdam on July 26-28, 2004, historians are often handicapped because they have no background or understanding of how astrology was actually practiced in the past. Without this knowledge, historians can make basic mistakes in their assumptions about different events, and in their translation of documents. At the Institute for Classical Studies, which is part of the Warburg Iinstitute in London , students are required to learn how to calculate horoscopes so they can accurately translate and intepret their findings. Understanding a symbolic system which has persisted for thousands of years in spite of all attempts to denigrate and dismiss it, is an important part of understanding human history and development.

According to the US Department of Education, unaccredited degrees and credits might not be acceptable to employers or other institutions, and use of degree titles may be restricted or illegal in some jurisdictions.

Criticism and controversy

John Silber, chancellor of Boston University wrote, "The promoters of Kepler College have honored Kepler not for his strength but for his weakness, as if a society advocating drunkenness named a school for Ernest Hemingway." Silber noted, "The fact is that astrology, whether judged by its theory or its practice, is bunkum. In a free society there is no reason to prevent those who wish to learn nonsense from finding teachers who want to make money peddling nonsense. But it is inexcusable for the government to certify teachers of nonsense as competent or to authorize - that is, endorse - the granting of degrees in nonsense." The vice provost for research at the University of Washington, Alvin Kwiram, called the school "Ludicrous" because "If I set up a college of tae kwon do, would they approve it? ... What if we had a college of quack medicine?"
