Derek Smart is probably most well known for his online presence, which has far eclipsed any merits his games have. He participated in one of the larger flame wars in the gaming culture. He's is well known for his aggresive and proud attitude, frequently manifested in his online postings where he ridicules all criticisms.
His critics claim that his games are characterised as overhyped, having complicated interfaces, and requiring very large basic operating manuals.
