The below is an abridged timeline of events established in the group of television shows and feature films set in the fictional Star Trek universe. More exhaustive timelines are available in both Star Trek reference works and in various fan websites.

History of the chronology

There have been several efforts over the years to develop a chronology for the events depicted by the Star Trek television series and its spin-offs. This matter has been complicated by the continued additions to the Star Trek canon.

Internal evidence in original series

There are few references setting the original series in an exact timeframe, and those that exist are largely contradictory :

  • In the episode "Space Seed" is said that Khan was from "two centuries" ago (1996), placing the episode in the late 22nd century
  • In the episode "Miri", it is said that 1960 was around 300 years ago
  • The episode "The Squire of Gothos" implies that the light cone of 19th century Earth has expanded to 800 years, setting the episode in the 27th century.
  • In the episode "Charlie X", Kirk states that is it is Thanksgiving on Earth (the United States Thanksgiving festival is held in late November)

Spaceflight chronology

The Star Trek Spaceflight Chronology and FASA, a publisher of Star Trek role-playing games, chose to take the Space Seed figure, adding a few years to make sure the events of the original series were in the 23rd century. This dating system is followed by other spin-off works in the 1980s, including Mr Scott's Guide to the Enterprise. This timeline system gives the following dates

James Dixon

James Dixon's chronology follows the "Miri" reference, and places the first five-year mission from 2260 to 2265.

TNG era and Okuda

Press materials for TNG suggested it was set around eighty years after the existing Star Trek, and that it was set in the 24th century. A couple of datapoints from first season episodes contradict the Spaceflight Chronology timeline:

Put together, these datapoints imply that McCoy was born around 2227, ruling out the Spaceflight Chronology entirely.

The Star Trek Chronology, by production staff Denise Okuda and Mike Okuda, asserts that:

Within the TNG era, episodes are easier to date. Stardates correspond exactly with seasons, with the first two digits of the stardate representing the season number. Okuda assumes the start of a season is January 1 and the end of the season is December 31.

Since the Chronology was published, it has been adhered to by the producers of the show. The film Star Trek: First Contact and prequel series Star Trek: Enterprise revisits the pre-TOS era revisits the early era.

In First Contact, Zephram Cochrane is confirmed as having invented warp drive, but the date is moved forward slightly to 2063, and it is revealed that first contact with the Vulcans took place immediately afterwards as a result of this.

Enterprise is set in the 2150s, and ties into the Cochrane backstory. Its pilot, "Broken Bow", depicts first contact with the Klingons, occurring much earlier than the Okuda chronology anticipated. It shows the opening of the Romulan war and the start of a coalition between Earth, Vulcans, Andor and Tellar. The final episode, "These Are The Voyages...", finally confirms 2161 as the founding year for the Federation.

5 Billion (possibly earlier) - 3.5 Billion Years Ago

  • A humanoid civilization seeds the oceans of many planets, which gives rise to many races, including humans, Klingons, Vulcans, and Cardassians. (This was revealed in the sixth-season TNG episode "The Chase")

65 Million Years Ago

  • One of Earth's dinosaur species, eventually known as the Voth, begin their mass exodus taking them to the Delta Quadrant after Earth is devastated by an asteroid. (Distant Origin)

3rd to 4th Century

  • The Vulcan Time of Awakening. In the midst of horrific wars on Vulcan, the philosopher Surak leads his people, teaching them to embrace logic and suppress all emotion. Those who do not embrace this philosophy leave Vulcan and found the Romulan Star Empire. (The seventh-season TNG episode "Gambit Part II" established the Time of Awakening as 2,000 years prior.)
  • The ancient Debrune, an offshoot of the Romulans, established an outpost on Barradas III. Other planets settled by Romulans or other Romulan offshoots included Calder II, Yadalla Prime, and Draken IV. (This was described in "Gambit part II".)
  • The Dominion is founded in the Gamma Quadrant by the shapeshifting race known as the Changelings. (Weyoun described the age of the Dominion as 2,000 years old in the fourth-season DS9 episode "To the Death.")

9th Century

  • Kahless the Unforgettable unites the Klingons by defeating the tyrant Molor and the Fek’lhri in battle, and provides his people with teachings based on a philosophy of honor. (The sixth-season TNG episode "Rightful Heir" said this event was 1,500 years prior.)

16th Century

1570 C.E.

  • The ancient Bajorans use solar sail ships to explore their solar system, and at least one even reaches Cardassia. (This was described as 800 years prior to the third-season DS9 "Explorers".)

18th Century

  • A group of interstellar anthropologists called the Preservers visit Earth and fearing the Native Americans to be in danger of extinction, transplant a small group of Lenape, Navajo and Mohicans to a distant planet near an asteroid belt, and provide a powerful obelisk-shaped deflector beam generator to protect them. The natives referred to these aliens as the Wise Ones. (This was described in the second-season TOS episode "The Paradise Syndrome." The date, according to The Star Trek Chronology, is derived by the Native American culture seen in the episode.)

19th Century

1871 C.E.

20th century

  • 1930
    • Kirk & his officers encounter the Guardian of Forever, and must follow an accidentally-dosed Dr McCoy back in Earth's past. To repair McCoy's time involvement, social worker Edith Keeler is allowed to die in a street accident, in ' The City on the Edge of Forever ' (TOS episode 28).
  • 1947
  • 1957
    • A Vulcan exploration ship investigates the launch of Earth's first satellite. But the ship, with T'Mir onboard, (T'Pol's great-grandmother) crashes in Carbon Creek, PA, & the crew must await rescue - Enterprise episode ' Carbon Creek '
  • 1968
    • While the Enterprise is on a time-travel mission to record historical events, Capt James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock help avert a world war, with the help of Gary Seven.
  • 1969
    • The U.S.S. Enterprise has a run-in with a black hole in the 23rd century, and must then begin working to prevent pollution of the timeline by returning an Air Force pilot (Captain John Christopher) that they have unwittingly captured in the 20th century (see 2009 below).
    • Apollo 11 lands on the moon
  • 1986
    • Using a Klingon Bird-of-Prey, Admiral James Kirk and crew land in San Francisco Bay to retrieve two humpback whales to take back with them to their own (23rd) century to avert a cataclysmic disaster on Earth, caused by an alien craft searching for the whales.
  • 1992
    • Khan Noonien Singh rises to power, assuming dictatorial control from South Asia to the Middle East.
  • 1996
    • The Eugenics Wars end.
    • Khan Noonien Singh & followers flee from Earth in the sleeper-ship SS Botany Bay, and travel in space for almost 300 years before being found in deep space and picked up by the starship Enterprise.
    • The U.S.S. Voyager is sent back to Alpha quadrant and part of the crew lands in Los Angeles to recover a Time-Starship that was accidentally found in 1967 by a 20th century human.

21st century

  • 2002
    • The stellar series probe Nomad is launched, and becomes a deadly weapon after it merges with an alien space probe, Tan Ru. ("The Changeling")
  • 2004
    • Jonathan Archer and T'Pol travel back in time to Detroit, Michigan to stop three Reptilian Xindi from developing a bio toxin deadly to humans.
  • 2009
    • The son of Captain John Christopher, Shaun Geoffrey, commands the first successful Earth-Saturn spaceprobe mission. ("Tomorrow is Yesterday")
  • 2012
    • The world's first self-sustaining civic environment Millenium Gate which became the model for the first habitat on Mars, completed in Portage Creek, Indiana.
  • 2024
    • The Bell Riots led by Gabriel Bell, force the closure of the Sanctuary districts across the United States. But it turns out that Benjamin Sisko interferes with the timeline and causes Gabriel Bell to die, and because of that, replaces him for a while. ("Past Tense")
  • 2026 to 2053
  • 2032
    • In Ares-IV, the first manned mission to Mars, pilot John Kelly is engulfed by a passing stellar phenomenon while the crew is still on the surface. With contact lost, he's presumed instantly killed, but in fact managed to survive for several days inside the craft. (The spacecraft is encountered in the Delta quadrant by the USS Voyager 344 years later). ("One Small Step")
  • 2033 to 2079

    • World War III finally ends and the Earth is devastated by the nuclear carnage of it. Scientific advancement continues, however.
