ITN recognition for Kevin Beattie

On 17 September 2018, In the news was updated with an item that involved the article Kevin Beattie, which you nominated. If you know of another recently created or updated article suitable for inclusion in ITN, please suggest it on the candidates page. The Rambling Man (talk) 08:45, 17 September 2018 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Kevin Beattie

The article Kevin Beattie you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Kevin Beattie for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already been on the main page as an "In the news" or "Did you know" item, you can nominate it to appear in Did you know. DYK for List of international goals scored by Romelu Lukaku

On 18 September 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article List of international goals scored by Romelu Lukaku, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Belgian footballer Romelu Lukaku (pictured) has scored two international hat-tricks, but only one is recognised by FIFA? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/List of international goals scored by Romelu Lukaku. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, List of international goals scored by Romelu Lukaku), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

That's tough on Lukaku. They changed the rules on subs then? They used to be unlimited in friendlies - I remember Sven changing the entire team at half-time in an England friendly once.--Pawnkingthree (talk) 15:21, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
It was tough, but FIFA is, well, you know, FIFA. But at least this DYK smashed it. Perhaps some clues there for the "cookie cutter" DYKers who get around 1000 hits. The Rambling Man (talk) 18:26, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
Sometimes a POTD blurb can hit the jackpot as well... Although there may be something about football and bombers that appeals to our readership more than other topics.  — Amakuru (talk) 19:28, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
POTD is usually quite popular I think. It gets a huge amount of main page space and is ordinarily a half-decent picture. I'm just gloating because I put literally zero effort into a DYK nomination and got shitloads of pageviews. Boom. Interesting to a broad audience? I thank you.... Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy

Hi Rambles. Hope you're well. I spotted your post at WT:CRIC and have a few comments/suggestions to help improve the article. Should the Recipients/List of winners sections be two sections, or is it worth merging them together? Also, under the selection paragraph, it refers to the 10 Test-playing nations. Do Ireland and Afghanistan now get a vote on this, or are they not included? I think that's it for now, hope that helps, and good luck in getting it to a FL. Lugnuts 08:53, 25 September 2018 (UTC)

Hi Gunslut, I really haven't spent too long looking in detail at the stuff outside the table. Once that's in place I can have a better look at the surrounding prose. I'm intending to write about each recipient in some detail to allude to why they were elected, so that section should be quite sizeable by the time I finish... Any help gratefully received. Cheers. ITN recognition for 2018 Ryder Cup - you smashed it!

On 30 September 2018, In the news was updated with an item that involved the article 2018 Ryder Cup, which you updated. If you know of another recently created or updated article suitable for inclusion in ITN, please suggest it on the candidates page. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:57, 30 September 2018 (UTC)

DYK for List of international goals scored by Alexis Sánchez

On 3 October 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article List of international goals scored by Alexis Sánchez, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that despite Alexis Sánchez's seven goals in qualification, Chile failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/List of international goals scored by Alexis Sánchez. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, List of international goals scored by Alexis Sánchez), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

A barnstar for you!

The Working Man's Barnstar
For your work at WP:ERRORS2, and for your creative initiative in starting the page, which has led to significant user input there. Plus, it takes time and effort to weed out potential errors in various articles that may be missed by others. I've disagreed with some of your stances in the past, regarding DYK on the Main page and other matters, but overall, thinking outside of the box, as has occurred with creating WP:ERRORS2, can be a good thing. North America 20:33, 19 October 2018 (UTC)
Hey, thanks for that. It's surprised me how effective it's been, and once I've started keeping tabs on just how many issues make it through, it's made me proud to offer the service! Cheers. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:46, 19 October 2018 (UTC)
You're welcome. Yeah, far from being some gripe page, various errors have actually been fixed. I wish people would consistently delineate where the fixes occur, though, either to the article, the Main page content, or both. North America 21:03, 19 October 2018 (UTC)

Source page

Your tech skills way exceed mine (a hamster's tech skills exceed mine, but never mind) - are you able to get anything out of Source 1? --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 12:02, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

Nope, that's an odd one, it's still live and yet no text with the headline. As you say, nothing at archive.org and Google's own cache is similarly unhelpful... The Rambling Man (talk) 12:13, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
OK, we'll skip it. Even the quote alone would be terrific, but the page doesn't make it clear it's from Beattie. --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 12:50, 29 October 2018 (UTC)
There's probably more in his autobio but the only copy I could see on t'internet was going for around 50 quid... The Rambling Man (talk) 12:53, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

Source 7 is a disaster. Luckily, quite a bit of it is also in the Times obit. I'll try to find some time to get on here and sort it out. I might also try dropping the paper a line and seeing if they can fix it. --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 22:35, 31 October 2018 (UTC)

I suspect some of that I could also dredge up from the "book" I have, IIRC some of that stuff was mentioned in the earlier sections... I'm off sick today so in between recuperation sessions, I'll take a look to see what I can do, assuming we never get source 7 back online. The Rambling Man (talk) 07:57, 1 November 2018 (UTC)

Rework possibilities

  • In later life, Beattie reminisced, "There would be times I would have nothing to eat for two or three days, unless my dad won a game of dominoes at the pub and got the fish and chips in. ... Even at that age, football was a release for me."
--> " In later life, Beattie reminisced, "There was often only food on the table when Dad had backed a winning horse, or else won a game of darts, or dominoes down at his local pub." (Finch, p. 11)
  • His father was also an alcoholic: Beattie reflected, "I didn't get on very well with my dad, if he couldn't have a drink, it was trouble ... I would hear the rows, hide under the bed and put my fingers in my ears."
--> His father was also an alcoholic: Beattie reflected, "Dad was a great man when he was sober – when he would be kind and thoughtful ... However, when he had been drinking, he was a different animal altogether. He would want to take on everyone." (Finch, p. 10)
  • Beattie supported his local football team, Carlisle United, and idolised the players.
--> "Being a local lad I was of course an ardent Carlisle United fan. I would have loved to have played for the club and although I couldn't afford to see too many games, I always scoured the newspapers for the match reports and often hung around Brunton Park, just to soak up the atmosphere or catch an autograph or two." (Finch, p. 20)
  • As a child, he once stood in the rain and managed to get the autographs of Allan Ross and Chris Balderstone, but felt "heartbroken" when Hughie McIlmoyle appeared and said, "I haven't got time, son. I'll get my hair wet", and "ran off. ... even then I thought, 'If I ever become a footballer, I'll never refuse to sign an autograph'."
--> "One of my heroes ... was the club's star striker Hughie McIlmoyle ... I remember joining a group of other fans after one game in the pouring rain, in the hope that I could get his signature. After hanging around for an age, Hughie eventually emerged ... but brushed past me and brusquely told me he was in a rush." Beattie was "devastated" and resolved to never turn down autograph hunters. (Finch, p. 20)
  • Now earning a wage, Beattie tried to help support...
--> Can't replace this directly. I have the quote that he earned £5 a week (Finch, p. 35) but not about sending stuff back to his folks until later. Within a couple of pages, he's earning £25 per week (+£10 win bonus). At this point he says "I was also able to help my parents at home and began sending them some money each week ... So I became extremely upset when I found out that Dad was spending the money that I had been sending home on drink and Mum was going without. Not only that but I also found out that his drinking had got worse and he had started knocking Mum around." (Finch p. 36)

Copycat alert

I did this yesterday evening and EEng did this tonight. I'd like to assert my authorship over that pun. Funny old world! The Rambling Man (talk) 22:22, 11 November 2018 (UTC)

EEng I got there first, credit where credit is due...! The Rambling Man (talk) 19:01, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
In my defense, I originally added the image immediately below your comment so that the origin was obvious. Someone removed it, and I later reinserted it elsewhere. I've made a change which I hope has restored balance to the universe. EEng 19:14, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
THANK "GOODNESS" FOR THAT!! (It was pretty smart though, eh?) The Rambling Man (talk) 19:15, 12 November 2018 (UTC)

Busy day

I know you've been taken to WP:ANI before, but having it happen on the exact same day and underneath the same thread of a former ARBCOM admin getting de-sysopped (and himself taken to ARBCOM) must be a new experience for you. Highly intriguing. I'm starting to think there's some truth to your mantra of "go and improve the encyclopedia".--WaltCip (talk) 23:20, 11 November 2018 (UTC)

Progress

So I think it's just a matter now of replacing source 7 everywhere. Anything else? --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 11:07, 12 November 2018 (UTC)

Dweller see above, I found most of it in the "book". The Rambling Man (talk) 11:41, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
Brilliant. Sorry, I had missed that. Missing quite a bit - I didn't know, or forgot, that the Arbcom election is on. Yes, all that looks fantastic. Integrate that and I think we're ready for final copyedit, 3rd party copyedit, FAC. --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 14:50, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
Dweller I only need the "stepping in" bit now, where he "sorted" his dad out. I'm away from the book at the moment so can't find it, if you can alt source it great, otherwise I'll have to wade through the "book" one more time in due course. Otherwise, every other issue has been done. Your call on the copyedit/third party copyedit. The Rambling Man (talk) 19:11, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
