Revision as of 02:34, 27 January 2019
It has been suggested that this article be merged into 2019 Venezuelan presidential crisis. (Discuss) Proposed since January 2019. |
The Guaido challenge (#guaidochallenge) is a viral internet challenge that emerged on Instagram on 25 January during the 2019 Venezuelan presidential crisis, involving Nicolás Maduro and Juan Guaidó, both with claims to the title of President of Venezuela.
The Associated Press said that Maduro's administration and Venezuela's state-run media sought to discredit Guaidó with video footage "to paint as a liar and a fraud". Venezuela's Communications Minister, Jorge Rodríguez, claimed to have proof of a meeting between Guaidó and United Socialist Party of Venezuela members, Diosdado Cabello and Freddy Bernal, in which Guaidó allegedly said he was under pressure from the United States. According to Guaidó, the meeting never happened.
The hashtag #Guaidochallenge makes fun of the video posted by Rodríguez as supposed proof of this meeting. One clip shows Cabello walking through the hotel lobby, then cuts to show a man in a hooded sweatshirt (alleged to be Guaidó) entering crossing the hall in the same direction as Cabello. The hooded man is heavily obscured and blurry, and it is impossible to identify the person.
Initial responses on Twitter followed shortly after the original posting of the video, with users posting photos of themselves with hoods and obscured faces in imitation of the man claimed by Rodriguez to be Guaidó. One such respose was then quoted with the hashtag #GuaidoChallenge by a former employee of Plop Media, the company behind popular satirical news site El Chigüire Bipolar and political web cartoon Isla presidencial, which was then seen and used by plop media staff with photos of their own and the company's social media accounts, boosting the new challenge's exposure. The hashtag went viral within minutes of the original quoted tweet, as Twitter and then Instagram users uploaded their own photos, to make fun of the original video and Rodriguez. The hashtag was trending at international level within minutes.
United States Senator from Florida Marco Rubio posted a picture and American actor Vin Diesel posted a video to the hashtag. Miami mayor Francis X. Suarez posted an image of himself in a hoodie, in support of Guaidó.
