Gillibrand campaigning in New Hampshire in February 2019

Kirsten Gillibrand has announced the formation of an exploratory committee to consider running for the Democratic nomination in the 2020 United States presidential election. She made the announcement on January 15, 2019, in an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the same day that paperwork establishing the Gillibrand 2020 Exploratory Committee was filed with the Federal Election Commission.

Main article: Political positions of Kirsten Gillibrand

Her position on guns took a sharp turn after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. It is reported that her NRA grading changed from A to F. Along with Warren and others, she has tried to close the Charleston loophole since October 2015. She says mass shootings is an emergency, rather than the Southern Border. She fights against the NRA directly.

Similar to Booker, she signed a bill for Marijuana Justice Act, which if passed would remove cannabis from the Controlled Substances Act.

She has drawn criticism from Rubio and Trump for tweeting 'Our future is female, intersectional, Powered by our belief in one another, And we’re just getting started'. Even though she is running against president Trump, she said the following regarding the Singapore Summit,

I’m very grateful that ... Trump is trying diplomacy as oppose to military action because that’s was what his first take was. So, I am grateful that he is making the effort to try diplomacy and to try to bring people together towards a peaceful resolution

Gillibrand slid on ice with her arms wide open to balance, and she joked that "campaigning is hard work". Trump tweeted inflammatorily, "if you think running as a parent is edgy delete your account and your campaign".
