==Cecilia Park vs. Forest==

]

Dear Zaian,

Just quickly to explain why the article was originally named "Cecilia Park" and not Cecilia Forest. The info comes from the SANPARKS website (as part of Table Mountain National Park, this piece of land falls under their management, national jurisdiction etc.)
Hello! Voting in the ''']''' is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on {{#time:l, j F Y|{{Arbitration Committee candidate/data|2023|end}}-1 day}}. All ''']''' are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

There were in fact TWO pieces of land called "Cecilia Forest" - one which the article is about, and one which lies up the slope from Kirstenbosch & Newlands Forest. The latter is a large indigenous forest which (confusingly) probably overlaps with the former, which was a separate forest/commercial plantation that's now been incorporated into TMNP.

The piece of land which the article is about, is now much less of a "forest" as most of its pine & gum plantations have been harvested, and indigenous forest will only be restored on certain patches (the others going to various types of fynbos and recreation facilities. See the Cecilia Park management plan on the SanParks website.)

This is why SanParks decided to rename it "Cecilia Park" - to avoid confusion with the indigenous forests further north, and also to emphasise the purpose of the land as being for local recreation. I'll let you decide on the proper way ahead, but I wanted to explain why you found so many results in a search for "Cecilia Forest" - and so few for the new name for this one specific piece of land.
I also wanted to direct you to the website of the actual authorities here (www.sanparks.org) where you can not only find online references to the name-change, but also download the PDF management plan documents and a whole bunch of reports too.
] (]) 11:33, 21 December 2016 (UTC)
: Hi, thanks for the comments. I have looked at the SANParks site and I can't see an indication of "Cecilia Park" as the official name, but I do see lots of references to "Cecilia", so it does seem that the "Forest" part of the name is being dropped by SANParks. The SANParks site only returns 6 search results for "Cecilia Park". The main one is a document titled "Cecilia Park - an illustrated vision for the future" but that document refers to ''Cecilia 'Park''' in quotes, suggesting it is not an official name. https://www.sanparks.org/docs/parks_table_mountain/planning_docs/cecilia-plantation-llustrated-vision.pdf. ] (]) 12:14, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

==Cecilia Park name==
Hi, I wanted to ask if you could please revert the switch from Cecilia Park > Cecilia Forest. There are several reasons to support this, which I'll try explain below:

Firstly, the name "Cecilia Forest" is ambiguous. It is common in popular usage to refer to two entirely different patches of land in Cape Town. It also refers to the real "forest" (pls note, the term has a strict definition in SANParks!) north and west of Kirstenbosch. Originally it was all the wooded land that lay within Cecil John Rhodes's property, but that's just the history. The name "Cecilia Forest" is now popularly used to refer to the forest by Kirstenbosch (technically the Groote Schuur estate) and ALSO the former "Plantation" (NB again, not a "forest"! https://www.sanparks.org/parks/table_mountain/library/2007/tc/tokai_cecilia_dec07/c_plantation.jpg ) in the area now renamed just "Cecilia" or "Cecilia Park". This means the wikipedia page "Cecilia Forest" should, at the least, be a disambiguation page.

Secondly, while the nickname is still more commonly used, that does not mean that the official name (as applied by the appropriate authorities) should not still be the main Misplaced Pages page.

Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam is a good precedent here. The most common name that the residents of that city use in conversation is still the name "Saigon". However the appropriate authorities in this case (ie. the government!) are the ones which influenced which name becomes the main wikipedia page. The more popular name "Saigon" redirects to that page. It should not be the other way around.

Cecilia should follow the same sort of template. I suggest that the earlier nickname "Cecilia Forest" should be a disambiguation page for the different "Cecilia Forests" of Cape Town (or a redirect page to the official name if you choose). The official name as expressed on Misplaced Pages could actually be one of several possibilities. All of which I think would satisfy the rather strictly-defined terms in nature conservation:
* It could be "Cecilia Park" which is the name for the recreational area that is currently being developed there (see SANParks website here: https://www.sanparks.org/parks/table_mountain/library/2007/tc/tokai_cecilia_dec07/cecilia_park_vision.jpg )
* It could be "Cecilia Plantation" which would also be technically correct, though the plantation is almost completely removed by now so the lifespan of this name is limited and will soon be historical (see: https://www.sanparks.org/parks/table_mountain/library/2007/tc/tokai_cecilia_dec07/background.jpg )
* It could even be "Cecilia, Table Mountain" or "Cecilia (Table Mountain)", "Cecilia section of Table Mountain National Park", as you'll have seen that at the park itself when you walk around, the official signage mostly just uses the name "Cecilia".

However it cannot be "Cecilia Forest". That name is quite definitely not correct, which is why it was officially changed.

Please consider & revert or change name accordingly.
Thank you. ] (]) 11:07, 23 February 2018 (UTC)

: Hi, thanks for the background. I think "Cecilia, Table Mountain" is probably the best page name. I saw that the signs now refer to "Cecilia", and "Cecilia Forest" isn't in significant use on the SANParks website any more . I couldn't find "Cecilia Park" except in that 2007 vision document that you linked to, so I think that name is a bit speculative, unless there are other more definitive sources for that name being used. I agree about the "plantation" being likely to fall away. ] (]) 13:35, 23 February 2018 (UTC)
::Okay thanks. When it comes to definitions in nature conservation, it is technically a "park", but the name "Cecilia, Table Mountain" that you suggest is correct and would serve perfectly well as an article title. (Btw, I suppose Cape TOWN is technically a "City", isn't it, so clearly it's a murky area!)
::Just to add though that when you switch it back, if you need to refer to the plot of land as something (ie. what TYPE of land it is), then it should be called a "park" or a "conservation area" or a "section of Table Mountain National Park". Those terms are all correct. Obviously it shouldn't be referred to as a "forest", just as it shouldn't be referred to as a "private nature reserve", "game park" or any other defined terms that would be incorrect. Thanks again, for being reasonable! Let me know if I can lend a hand with any of the re-writing, once you've reverted the article name . ] (]) 12:46, 26 February 2018 (UTC)

== About your long standing edit on Robert Sobukwe's wiki page ==

I have found a potential error on the Robert Sobukwe Misplaced Pages page, that I have traced back to an edit by you on 16:51, 19 January 2007.
The last sentence under Internment states "This procedure became known as the 'Sobukwe clause' and went on for a further three years."
I wanted a bit of context seeing as you are a frequent Misplaced Pages editor.
I believe that what is being said here is that; "Sobukwe was kept on Robben Island, due to this clause, for another 3 years."
If that is the case then it would be factually incorrect as he was on Robben Island for another 6 years.
I wish to know if this was an error on your part that I may correct or if there is a different meaning I missed.
A potential meaning that you might have indented (that is more clearly stated in today's version of the Misplaced Pages page) is that; "The last extension to Sobukwe's sentence was made 3 years later."
I do not know if this is true or false.
Could you please let me know what you intended and which of one the citations proves it.

I do not know how to properly contact people over Misplaced Pages so I chose this method. If this is the wrong method please let me know how to properly communicate in the future. — Preceding ] comment added by ] (] • ]) 10:26, 29 September 2020 (UTC)

DYK for Vaal Reefs mining disaster

On 21 June 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Vaal Reefs mining disaster, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that 104 miners were killed in the 1995 Vaal Reefs mining disaster when a locomotive fell on an elevator, making it history's deadliest elevator disaster? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Vaal Reefs. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Vaal Reefs mining disaster), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Invitation to participate in a research

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Misplaced Pages, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
