After showing the initial photos of the discovery to Paleoanthropologist ], a phone call was made to ] asking to fund an expedition to excavate them. However, after getting the go-ahead to start assembling a team for the expedition, Lee knew he had to get more proof that these photos were showing what looked like new hominid fossils just laying on top of the soil in the cave chamber. He called for his son, Matthew, who was physically appropriate to fit down the narrow opening in the cave and who was also trained in taking scientific photos. A few days later, Matthew, Lee, Rick, Steve and a few other members of their caving club, returned to the cave system. After 45 minutes of spelunking through the cave system, they reached the top of the chute where Matthew descended after Rick into the Dinaledi Chamber. Once reaching the bottom, Matthew came face-to-face with hundreds of fossils laying at his feet. He emerged from the chamber over 45 minutes later with pictures that would confirm the discovery was as important as those initial photos showed.<ref>{{cite web |title=Our incredible origins: The astonishing tale of Homo naledi |url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gspjzX0Pq3U&ab_channel=NewScientist |website=Youtube |publisher=New Scientist}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |title=Explorer Lee Berger on the Discovery of New Species Homo Naledi |url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vegzmFbHMeU&ab_channel=WorldScienceFestival |website=Youtube |publisher=World Science Festival}}</ref> | |||
