On May 4, 1976, at Cobb County, Georgia, eight-year-old Lori Smith and a ten-year-old girl were both kidnapped by Virgil Delano Presnell Jr., who raped and sodomized the older victim. Presnell subsequently murdered Smith by drowning her in a stream when she tried to escape. Presnell was later convicted of Smith's murder and sentenced to death. Originally scheduled to be executed in 2022, his execution is currently on hold due to legal issues.
