Yesterday I tried to update ]'s Misplaced Pages page with her latest comprehensive career and bio information. And also with a more recent, professional press photo. Unfortunately, due to a conflict of interest, the update was rejected.

If I send the text to you, would you be willing to review it and update your version of the page? The information I gathered came from a reliable source, the artist's own website https://www.aimeedejongh.com.

The article ] has been ]&#32;because of the following concern:
<blockquote>''''Bordes d'Envalira' is not a village in Andorra. This is supported by local knowledge and the website of the Government of Andorra. Bordes d'Envalira is an unofficial collection of buildings which are part of the Grandvalira ski resort and thus does not suit Misplaced Pages's notability guidelines (as even Grandvalira does not have an English article).
Furthermore, the only reference in this article, positioned as if to support the idea of Bordes d'Envalira being a village, actually contradicts the article. The reference is from an autobiography which describes the area as solely being a mountain pass on the border of France, rather than a village in Central Andorra as suggested by this article.'''</blockquote>

== Thank you / A request ==

For many years, I've wanted to thank you for your careful vigilance of my Misplaced Pages page (Dawn Eden Goldstein). I'm honored that you took an interest in it. All your edits have been first-rate.

If I might be so bold as to request your intervention on a page about someone dear to my heart, I'd love to see someone update the page for Father Edward Dowling, S.J., using information from my biography of him, Father Ed: The Story of Bill W.'s Spiritual Sponsor (Orbis Books, 2022). David Crumm, writing about Father Ed for Read the Spirit, noted several errors on Dowling's Misplaced Pages page, which I believe have yet to be corrected--see https://readthespirit.com/explore/dawn-eden-goldsteins-father-ed-lifts-up-the-saint-who-befriended-bill-w-and-helped-to-spread-the-good-news-about-alcoholics-anonymous/. As Crumm notes, my book also contains information that would be of interest for the Misplaced Pages page on Edwin A. Lahey.

I don't know what Misplaced Pages's rules are with regard to whether you are permitted to receive promotional materials from subjects of pages, but if it's permitted, I'd be delighted to have a copy of Father Ed sent to you or to someone who can pass it on to you. My email address can be found on my Dawn Patrol blog. In any case, you have my continued gratitude. ] (]) 01:40, 22 September 2024 (UTC)

== Overcategorization ==

I've noticed some semi-automated category edits from this account. I guess some categories were changed or something and they were being updated on articles. The problem I'm seeing is that the old/obsolete categories shouldn't have been on the article in the first place. Any chance that you can check that the categories actually apply to the article while updating them? –&nbsp;] (]) 05:06, 23 September 2024 (UTC)

:{{ping|Reidgreg}} Can you please give me a couple of specific examples of what you're seeing? Once I can see for myself I can better answer your question. Also: I'm about to head to bed, so I probably won't be answering until tomorrow evening. --<span style="font-family:Old English Text MT">]</span>]] 05:23, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
::To be clear, this isn't your fault; the articles had category problems before your edits. At worst you added a tiny amount of clutter to a trash heap. For my perspective, categories should be for defining characteristics of the subject which are commonly and consistently referred to by the article's sources. Very often I see categories which are trivial or contradictory to the article content, but it's generally a low priority for me to address them. Some examples:
::* ] is a tricky one as the sources disagree to the genre of the film, to the point of a 45-word 20-source explanatory footnote. Of the 20 sources, only one called it an 'action-comedy' so that category is weakly supported. Other weak or unsupported categories are 'Films based on Animal Farm', 'American splatter films', 'Films about death games', and 'Obscenity controversies in film'.
::* ] is another one where the edit history is full of unsupported genre and category changes. It had been categorized as an action film and you added English-language to that, but I don't think any source calls it an action film. I removed those and a score of other categories.
::* ] had an unsupported 'drama' category to which you added English-language.
::] (]) 15:11, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
:::{{ping|Reidgreg}} (Apologies for the delay - I thought I would have more time for an in-depth response these past few days, but evidently I misjudged my time management skills and level of exhaustion.)
:::I take your point...and I will see if anything jumps out at me as I continue filling out the categories. Though it's going to be a fairly large task yet, so I suspect some things will fall through the cracks no matter how careful I am. Still, I'll keep my eye out for anything I can. --<span style="font-family:Old English Text MT">]</span>]] 05:18, 26 September 2024 (UTC)

== Adventure films? ==

Hey there, just letting you know I generally haven't been paying too much attention to the surge of category changes you've been making, but it raised my eyebrows when I saw that you'd categorized '']'' as an adventure film. It's not described as such in the lead, nor do I think most if any sources would categorize it as such. I've reverted that and a handful of other changes. I'm not sure whether that was intentional on your part or not, but you might want to slow down a little. ] (]) 13:35, 7 October 2024 (UTC)

:{{ping|Doniago}} The problem is, often, that I'm picking up on categories that have already been added to the article. '']'', for instance: it was categorized under {{cl|Sea adventure films}} and {{cl|1970s adventure films}}, both of which I've since removed. So that kind of thing is getting amplified. I catch it when I can (the other day I ran into a Spanish-language film that had been categorized as "English", for some reason), but sometimes things do slip through. ::::::{{ping|Doniago}} I'm likely coming to a slowdown point soon anyway - this is a huge project, and I'm trying to get what I can done to get it out of the way. But I think most of the major categories are done.
::::::But I have a question for you: I noted that in both '']'' and '']'' you've removed the sports-comedy-related categories, but left the category {{cl|American basketball films}}. Do you think it's enough to categorize it as a sports film, rather than a sports comedy? --<span style="font-family:Old English Text MT">]</span>]] 14:05, 10 October 2024 (UTC)
:::::::So, I haven't seen ''Teen Wolf Too'', so I can't really say how much sports is a primary aspect of that film, but I definitely remember basketball being a significant component of the first film. That said, I would question whether it's a "sports film". Aren't those typically films where the sport is a primary driver of the plot? The basketball in the first film is somewhat incidental, IIRC. If <s>Marty</s> Scott is a swimmer or a baseball or soccer player instead, does it change anything in terms of the overall plot?
:::::::More to the point though, as always: what do reliable sources say? Do they categorize either of these films as being sports films?
:::::::If "basketball films" is a sub-cat of "sports film", but nobody really calls either film a "sports film", then it may be best to remove that as well.
:::::::I dunno, is this a reasonable analysis? I feel like I'm rambling. ] (]) 14:22, 10 October 2024 (UTC)
::::::::{{ping|Doniago}} You're not rambling, no - you've hit upon exactly the problem that creeps into these category trees; at what point does a subject (such as sports) become a "primary" driver of the film? And of course, because one cannot see all films in one's life, it can become more difficult to judge if one has not seen the film in question. I'll leave it for now, as untangling it requires more research than I can provide...but there are a couple of other categories I might throw in there, then. (I'm a completist: if it fits under the "sports film" rubric then it should receive the requisite categories.)
::::::::Similarly...returning to {{cl|Buddy cop films}}: I'm not wild about the idea of putting them as a subcategory of ''either'' {{cl|Action thriller films}} ''or'' {{cl|Buddy comedy films}}, because I don't think a category tree should be an either/or proposition; it should be a "both" proposition. I tend to leave it as it is because I trust that there are editors that know film better than I. Even so...I would prefer a more elegant solution. --<span style="font-family:Old English Text MT">]</span>]] 14:40, 10 October 2024 (UTC)
:::::::::Well, ] is a subgenre of ], which explicitly states that it's a subgenre of ] (not necessarily more than affection between people though). However, if there are exceptions, then that complicates matters. I'm not quite sure whether I'm responding to the kernel of your concern though. ] (]) 16:05, 10 October 2024 (UTC)
::::::::::{{ping|Doniago}} You are, though, because that's how '']'' breaks down (no pun intended) into a comedy film. I don't necessarily disagree - "buddy cop" implies comedy to me, as well. In which case the category tree is correct, but perhaps the film is misfiled.
::::::::::Really, though, I mean it more as an illustrative point than anything else. Which is usually a sign that I've been thinking about things too long. --<span style="font-family:Old English Text MT">]</span>]] 16:19, 10 October 2024 (UTC)
:::::::::::Well, ''Point Break'' was categorized as a buddy cop film with no mention of such a dynamic within the body of the article, so I've removed those categories. I'd be okay with it being called a "buddy film" given that the article does discuss the nature of the relationship between the two main characters in those terms. However, "buddy" is kind of a hybrid genre of which comedy is a component, and the "buddy film" category is not a subcat of any comedy genre, so I'd be fine with "buddy" categories being applied. Hey @]

I have spotted you a lot around in my watchlist and recent changes, mostly changing categories using AWB. I have access to AWB and would like the contribute more, especially related to categories. Can you suggest some places, techniques and generally where can I help out while using AWB. Some tips and tricks of what you do will also be helpful.

Thanks for your time! <span style="font-family:monospace;font-weight:bold">]:&lt;]&gt;</span> 07:37, 2 November 2024 (UTC)

:{{ping|Bunnypranav}} I usually discover the categories that need to be filled in through trial and error...I'll be looking at an article, and I'll look at the categories and notice one that I didn't realize existed. I'll look at it and see if it needs filling out - if it does, I add it to my mental list.
:Do you use ] at all? That's how I generate my lists, most of the time. It's quite useful, especially with a little logic. I find it especially helpful when generating by-century lists to work on.
:I'm sure there are lists of tips and tricks I could come up with, but honestly the best thing to do, I think, would be to tinker around with it and see what you can come up with via trial and error. That's what I did when I first got started, and it helped me find a rhythm to to sort of thing that works for me.
:Is there anything in particular you're looking to do? --<span style="font-family:Old English Text MT">]</span>]] 17:24, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
::Thanks for the detailed response. I would love to systematically add categories, either to articles that are eligible (but do not have it), or create new categories and add eligible articles to it. I have heard about PetScan before, any specific way you use it? <span style="font-family:monospace;font-weight:bold">]:&lt;]&gt;</span> 17:34, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
:::{{ping|Bunnypranav}} So basically, with PetScan, you feed in a couple of categories and it spits out (or should spit out) a list of articles that are in both, or all, of them. For instance: feeding it {{cl|20th-century births}}, {{cl|20th-century deaths}}, and {{cl|English sportsmen}} gives you a list of English sportsmen born between 1901 and 2000. The trick is, if you don't give it a depth number, it will only search those first-level categories. So that particular search won't turn up very much, because those top-level categories aren't very full. Add a depth number of "2" or "3" (I usually use "5" to get fairly deep into the category tree) and it will turn up more articles.
:::This is where the trial and error comes in, I should say, because category trees aren't always intuitive. Which is why, for starters, I recommend looking for a bit before you get started, so that you can see what categories are in the tree. There's a function that allows you to exclude categories from your search, and I find that very useful. (In the search above, for instance, I set it to exclude {{cl|20th-century English sportsmen}}. Because that's the category I want to add, and it doesn't help me to have a list of articles that already feature it.)
:::What I would do is start by filling out some existing categories - there are plenty of them around that need filling out, and it gives you a chance to learn the mechanics of categories before you start creating them yourself. --<span style="font-family:Old English Text MT">]</span>]] 17:42, 2 November 2024 (UTC)

==Mislabeled image==
Hi User:Ser Amantio di Nicolao! This image seems to be mislabeled. It is actually from Hierakonpolis, dated Naqada IC-IIA (3600-3500 BCE?). Discovered in 1998–1999 by the team of B. Adams (2002a, 2004: 47–52), Tomb 16 is a large tomb of the Naqada IC–IIA period into which a bricklined tomb of the Naqada IIIA2 period had later been inserted in what now appears to be an act of respectful renovation rather than usurpation (Hendrickx 2008: fig. 5). (...) In all probability, the two famous ceramic masks also originate from this tomb (Fig. 2). Some fragments were found in the tomb fill, although the majority were collected in surface and subsurface levels to the west and especially to the south, where the beard to the smaller mask was recovered in 2010. Other finds from the tomb and its fill include carnelian ring beads, two biconical gold beads, ivory comb fragments, rock crystal blades, three transverse arrowheads and one tanged arrowhead.}}

:::::::::Incidentally, from the article: you have recommended "a visual editor that doesn’t require any coding skills." I often tell people: one of the things that first attracted me to this project was the fact that I ''didn't'' need significant technological skills to participate, and that the coding was easy to understand. :::::::::::I'm sure the Visual Editor itself could be improved, even I haven't used it enough to know what its strengths and weaknesses are. I just wish it was available on the app because we have so many mobile editors nowadays and they don't even have that as an option there. I grew up in a world where people can use the Internet without having to learn anything special so that factors into my thinking there too. I'm kind of surprised how fast I picked up source editing but I was editing wikihow at 12 so I guess I just picked it up like a sponge then (they also use mediawiki, even if they're not affiliated with the wmf at all). ] ] 17:40, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
::::::::::::{{ping|Clovermoss}} I don't know that I've ever used the Visual Editor - I think I tried it once and decided I didn't like it. I learned source editing, and that's what I prefer.

:{{ping|Cinemaandpolitics}} "If there is a more specific category a more general one should not be used?" - yes, that's it in a nutshell. There can be exceptions, but they are rare (and should be noted as non-diffusing on the category page, though they are not always); generally speaking, an attempt should be made to diffuse categories as much as possible. See ] for more information.
:To your other question: {{cl|21st-century Japanese women}} would be used on an article about a Japanese woman who was active in the 21st century, but who otherwise cannot be placed in a subcategory. I know it and similar categories were used in the past when there were no "sportswomen" categories.

Kuroda Seiki and unsourced claims

Hello Ser Amantio di Nicolao, I'd like to ask about the page Kuroda Seiki that you created in early 2006. When you made the article, the "Legacy" section contained (and still does contain) exceptional unsourced claims, specifically: Few artists have influenced Japanese art as much as Kuroda. among other unsourced claims. Per WP:BURDEN, I've challenged them by placing them in {{cn-span}} tags and tagged the section as needing more citations because I have reasonable belief that these claims are true. However, I plan to remove the info within a week's notice per WP:V and BURDEN. If I am mistaken in this tagging, please let me know. Thank you.

P.S: Happy new year.Sparkle and Fade edits 07:08, 1 January 2025 (UTC)

@Sparkle & Fade: I'm the first to admit that my articles from eighteen years ago need a fair bit of work, but I don't have the time or the inclination to return to them now. Whatever happens, happens.
And happy new year to you, too. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoLo dicono a Signa. 07:11, 1 January 2025 (UTC)

Happy new year 2025, opened with trumpet fanfares that first sounded OTD in 1725 (as the Main page has). -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:25, 1 January 2025 (UTC)

@Gerda Arendt: Thanks very much - happy new year to you, too! --Ser Amantio di NicolaoLo dicono a Signa. 18:40, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
Liebster Immanuel, Herzog der Frommen, BWV 123, my story today 300 years after the first performance, is up for GAN. Dada Masilo will be my story tomorrow. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:58, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
My story today is about a composer who influenced music history also by writing. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:22, 8 January 2025 (UTC)

changes to Category:American communists

I noticed you recently removed a bunch of bios from this category and was wondering at the selection. I imagine it was based on a discussion somewhere, but I haven't been able to find it. Can you enlighten me about it? Thanks. -- R. S. Shaw (talk) 20:24, 2 January 2025 (UTC)

@R. S. Shaw: They are in the category Category:Members of the Communist Party USA, which is a subcategory of Category:American communists by political party, which is a subcategory of Category:American communists. They don't need to be in the parent (or in this case, grandparent) if they are in the child category. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoLo dicono a Signa. 05:42, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
I hadn't noticed. Thanks. - R. S. Shaw (talk) 06:13, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
@R. S. Shaw: Yeah, it's the sort of thing that gets buried under other edits over the years. Why I like to run through and do the occasional category cleanup. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoLo dicono a Signa. 06:50, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

dmy and shortdesc

I am honestly a bit surprised I'm the first one to post this here, but please make sure whatever version of AWB you are using us up-to-date; {{short description}} should always be the first thing on the page, and AWB should know this, and thus edits like Special:Diff/1267333194 should not be happening. Thanks. Primefac (talk) 17:25, 4 January 2025 (UTC)

@Primefac: Odd. I did this last night, and it was correct. And I've changed absolutely nothing in the setup between now and then. And there are no updates according to the tool.
I'm leaving the house in a little while, but when I come home I'll play around with the module a bit and see if I can correct for this. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoLo dicono a Signa. 17:32, 4 January 2025 (UTC)

Ser Amantio di Nicolao, check out MOS:ORDER. If you're using a tool or a bot to add that dating, sometimes those bots and tools have bugs. It's best to always double check those edits. Masterhatch (talk) 17:31, 4 January 2025 (UTC)

@Masterhatch: I usually check first thing. I guess a.) I was lulled into a false sense of security (see comment above), and b.) I just woke up (so maybe it's too damn early for thinking.) Regardless, I'll take another look tonight to see if I can correct for this. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoLo dicono a Signa. 17:33, 4 January 2025 (UTC)
I noticed a space was also being added where there was no need for a space. Anyways, i fixed about 100 of the edits. There's probably a couple hundred more to go. Any chance you could help and fix a few? Masterhatch (talk) 21:47, 4 January 2025 (UTC)
@Masterhatch: Apologies. I've been out all day, elsewise I would have been happy to make the required fixes. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoLo dicono a Signa. 07:04, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
No worries. I didnt mind doing it. I had some time to kill at work. Masterhatch (talk) 07:57, 5 January 2025 (UTC)

I went back over nearly 500 of your edits and fixed most of the spacing and MOS:ORDER issues. Almost every one of your past 500 edits had an issue. I also found 2 counts of you adding that dating template to articles that already had it. Please be careful when using bots as it takes a lot of work to go back and fix it. Masterhatch (talk) 02:17, 5 January 2025 (UTC)

As an additional request to this, can you please check for the presence of the Use dmy dates template and remove it please. Just adding Use mdy dates causes a template conflict. You will need to check the whole article, because there used to be a preference for putting the Use dmy/mdy dates templates at the bottom of the article code. Thanks. - X201 (talk) 08:35, 6 January 2025 (UTC)

@X201: I do try to exclude for it - are there any examples in particular you're seeing where it's showing up? Either way I'll make sure to recheck my data in a bit. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoLo dicono a Signa. 22:52, 6 January 2025 (UTC)

Request

It looks like the software stops giving milestone notifications after the tenth millionth edit (per Help:Notifications#Milestone). Since you're the most likely out of any current Wikipedian to ever do so, I was hoping that maybe you could screenshot the notification and upload it if you reach it? Thanks. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 08:06, 5 January 2025 (UTC)

@Clovermoss: I will do my best to remember to do so in that as-yet distant future. (Not being facetious - as I get older I'm not sure I will remember this conversation tomorrow, much less that far in the future...) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoLo dicono a Signa. 09:15, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
I'll try to remind you closer to that milestone then. It's definitely not going to be me that hits it, because my goal is to hit a million edits before 2100. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 02:56, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
@Clovermoss: Methinks you have time, then. :-)
I should think there would be someone over at Commons, at least, who's getting close to the mark? It strikes me that it would be much easier with the way Commons is structured. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoLo dicono a Signa. 05:35, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
Either that or wikidata. I know of several editors that have a million plus edits on that project. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 05:40, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
@Clovermoss: Yeah, Wikidata makes it really easy, too. (I mean, I have close to 8,000 edits there, and I'm never actually there to begin with.) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoLo dicono a Signa. 05:56, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
By the way, now seems as good of time as any to mention that I'm honoured to be mentioned alongside you in this article. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 06:03, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
@Clovermoss: You're very kind - in turn, I have to say it's been a great pleasure reading about the work you're doing with mobile Misplaced Pages (I've used it myself - mostly to make on-the-fly edits as I read something - but I never could get used to using it on a regular basis.) And for working on the editor retention question - I agree wholeheartedly about the social side of things here, and wish that people would remember that being nicer about things could go a long way, sometimes. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoLo dicono a Signa. 06:10, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
Well, I don't know if you've ever seen it, but my essay about mobile editing is here. I usually use the desktop version of the site, but I've definitely done a lot of experimentation with the app and finding out its limitations. User:Clovermoss/Editor reflections is an interesting read if you're interested in some of the stuff I've tried to figure out about editor retention. I definitely think that being nice goes a long way! You never know what someone has been through. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 06:14, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
@Clovermoss: Thanks for the reminder, by the way - I've meant to contribute to your "Editor reflections", but somehow always forget until I'm away from the computer.
Incidentally, from the article: you have recommended "a visual editor that doesn’t require any coding skills." I often tell people: one of the things that first attracted me to this project was the fact that I didn't need significant technological skills to participate, and that the coding was easy to understand. I feel like we get away from that too frequently; I'm glad to see there are others who recognize and remember that point. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoLo dicono a Signa. 06:41, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
Yeah I feel like the point I was making there got a bit lost in translation. What I was specifically suggesting was that the mobile app should have visual editor (it doesn't). Source text on a small screen can kind of look nightmarish when you're used to WYSIWYG. Example: File:Editing on the android Misplaced Pages app.png. Despite that, I prefer source editing myself, even though I don't have any other computer science experience. The other thing to keep in mind about the app is that it expects you to memorize all these templates in order to use them. There's nothing like a dropdown button for {{citeweb}}. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 06:51, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
I'm sure the Visual Editor itself could be improved, even I haven't used it enough to know what its strengths and weaknesses are. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 17:40, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
@Clovermoss: I don't know that I've ever used the Visual Editor - I think I tried it once and decided I didn't like it. I learned source editing, and that's what I prefer.
I can't really speak to the mobile experience, as I really prefer working on the desktop whenever possible. For everything: I don't even enjoy texting, which I know annoys a number of my friends. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoLo dicono a Signa. 23:25, 6 January 2025 (UTC)

Bruno Bernard and Bruno of Hollywood, NYC

Bruno Bernard and Bruno of Hollywood, NYC

User:JalenBarks removed content from the article and from the edit history from both pages, falsely claiming copy violation of an image from mediawiki commons and a two sentence quote from the NY Times. You have edited Bruno Bernard and you have user rights and experience. I think User:JalenBarks made an error.

@69.181.17.113: I've edited plenty of articles; that doesn't mean I have in-depth knowledge about them. Speak to User:JalenBarks if you feel they've made an error. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoLo dicono a Signa. 05:37, 6 January 2025 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Fontaine (singer)

Notice

The article Fontaine (singer) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unreferenced and unimproved for 14 years. I can't find any reliable sources under Fontaine, her full birth name, or Saint Joan. Badly fails WP:MUSICBIO.

While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
