Dr. Newmark (1910-1981) was a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (1943-1976) where he was the advisor or co-advisor to 93 Ph.D. students. He was an honorary member of ASCE one of the founding members of the Engineering Mechanics Division of the ASCE. In collaboration with his colleagues and students, he published more than 200 papers, books, and chapters in books, with significant contributions in the area of earthquake engineering. During his career, Dr. Newmark worked on numerous engineering projects including the design and review of 75 nuclear power plants, seismic design aspects of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, and the Torre Latinoamericana (Latin-American Tower) in Mexico City. He was the principal technical expert for the development of the Applied Technology Council's foundational publication Tentative Provisions for the Development of Seismic Regulations for Buildings".
