Hi, I'd just like to apologise if any of my behaviour seemed disruptive with regards to the Steve Rogers image. I never meant to be disruptive or edit-war, and I guess I was somewhat confused when the image was reverted, as I had thought there was consensus and that the sourcing was ok. I will try to engage constructively to sort the raised issues on the article. Thanks. ] (]) 16:48, 12 April 2021 (UTC)

Hello there! Hi, Netoholic! Hope this finds you well. I am in the process of writing some articles using ]. While the free access is pretty helpful on its own (I managed to write 9 GAs from scratch in five days), the OCR versions leave a lot to be desired, and it kind of feels like wringing blood with a stone with some of them (it takes way longer than being able to just click the image, and there are lots of references I just can't use at all). I submitted an on September 2, but it hasn't been reviewed yet -- is there anything I can do to speed it along, or are there just a bunch of applications to get through? == Newspapers.com renewal error ==

Hi there,

I requested a renewal for complimentary access to ] on January 8. However, I cannot access the full archive. When I clicked on "Account Details," it reads under the Subscription info, "You're currently a Registered Guest. This free subscription gets you access to search newspapers but you will not be able to view the full page. Get a paid subscription for access."

I was reading a previous discussion of a similar Wikipedian who encountered the same problem, and it turned out because the e-mail used on the Misplaced Pages Library application was different than the one on the Newspapers.com account. Likewise, my account listed on the application was birdienest81@hotmail.com, but the Newspapers.com account had jgarin07@gmail.com. So I changed the one on the Newspapers.com account to the hotmail one and changed my username to birdienest81. I wonder if this should solve the problem.

== Achieving consensus at Talk:Cross-country skiing (sport)? ==

Netoholic, you are invited to participate in a ranked-choice poll at ], which may help arrive at a consensus among the choices discussed. I have set up an opportunity for you to do so. Cheers, ] (]) 17:53, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

:Hi Netoholic, I understand your good-faith concern about ], which says, "The words "vote" and "voting" have a variety of connotations, but they are commonly associated specifically with ballot-casting or majority voting." It goes on to say, "Different terminology (e.g. "seeking views", "polling" and "commenting") may be preferable." Indeed, what I have offered was a '''poll''' to help guide those participating in the discussion to consensus in a situation where none of the alternatives offered is "wrong"; there's just a question of preference among them.
: WP:NOVOTE goes on to state the "communal norm that it is "not the vote" that matters, but the reasoning behind the !vote that is important." I suggest that the reasoning has been presented over a range of similar alternatives, so the poll, complete with comment, helps focus the discussion to where a choice that people can live with emerges.
:I invite you to remove the collapsed format and participate. If you have a better path to consensus, I'm very interested in knowing it! Cheers, ] (]) 15:03, 22 January 2022 (UTC)

To get one of those pages deleted:
#receive an actual copyright infringement notice or complaint from a copyright holder or other legal notice from an appropriate party which indicates that blanking and protecting for a few months is not sufficient.

A followup on this: I've modified the database compression code to support excluding certain namespaces and am currently running the concatenated compression to exclude templates, categories and their respective talk pages. All pages prior to Bv in this run plus all from the previous run aren't affected by this change and may have revisions compressed with concatenation but there shouldn't be more (barring a human not adding the restricton clause to the job). ] 23:43, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I was unclear in my clarification - I meant that you had not linked James's comments in the TfD discussion, which was the really important discussion, since it was the one that went 11-2 in favor of keeping the template, and the one that had the weight of official policy behind it. I'll make that clearer on the page. Sorry. ] 17:22, Apr 8, 2005 (UTC)

== Books & Bytes – Issue 58 ==
As you've seen I've started to create what will probably end up at about three dozen encyclopaedic articles on the English cricket season that has just started. As part of this, details of various games could go into up to four articles - one on the season as a whole, two on the teams and another on the competition. Such an approach is only possible if there is a way of inserting the same text in a number of different articles. Without that facility, such a series of articles would be too time-consuming a task: every time a comma or typo is changed, or every time someone changes one article - either all four would need to be corrected or they would go out of kilter.

<div lang="en" dir="ltr" class="mw-content-ltr">
Thankfully, Misplaced Pages has the technology to allow this. It will allow us to adopt an approach and report on the English cricket season in a way that no-one else does. We can report thoroughly and in an encyclopaedic manner that differentiates us from the rest.

As a programmer, the use of templates makes perfect sense here - hard coding is considered bad practice, using a #define statement (here, a template) is generally preferable. ] 15:46, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

You thought that we had started to work out some solutions? Just because you finally edit out calling me a troll and made a single attempt at seeking my input over a month after your first revert and almost a month after your first insult and incivility, and after you had ignored my comments and concerns up until then? I have to ask if you are completely clueless, or if you are delusional, or if there is some other explanation. After your last Scope Creep edit to the proposal I took the page off my Watchlist and gave up on it--it just wasn't worth the hassle. Since I have worked as a database programmer in the past, I could have helped improve the Meta-template article, but you never gave me the chance.

Thanks. IronManCap (talk) 16:48, 12 April 2021 (UTC)

Hi Netoholic, I'd just like to mention that the series Super Dragon Ball Heroes isn't actually a TV series, it's an Original net animation (similar to Original video animation), so I moved it from Super Dragon Ball Heroes (TV series) to Super Dragon Ball Heroes (web series). Cheers.★Trekker (talk) 20:23, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself. Liz 15:27, 30 August 2021 (UTC)

Newspapers.com access

Hi, Netoholic! Hope this finds you well. I am in the process of writing some articles using Newspapers.com. I submitted an application on September 2, but it hasn't been reviewed yet -- is there anything I can do to speed it along, or are there just a bunch of applications to get through? jp×g 23:57, 13 September 2021 (UTC)

Well, it seems to have gone through -- I've been enjoying it a lot the last few days, and sourcing articles is a breeze! I don't know if you had anything to do with it, but if you did, I offer my gratitude. jp×g 06:48, 20 September 2021 (UTC)

Access to you-know-where

I'm once again getting the "You need a subscription to view this page" message from Newspapers.com, even though it's only been a few weeks since the last time I had to do this crap. Is their software that bad, or do they have IT people who don't really like us despite the millions of hits we must generate for them, or what? --Orange Mike | Talk 21:19, 18 November 2021 (UTC)

@Orangemike: Make sure you are logged-in and verify your account level at https://www.newspapers.com/account/ says "Plan: Complimentary Publisher Extra Annual". -- Netoholic @ 02:14, 19 November 2021 (UTC)
I'm logged in, and it says my status is "registered guest." --Orange Mike | Talk 02:26, 19 November 2021 (UTC)
@Orangemike: Alright then, it might be you need to renew because Newspapers.com gives our users elevated access in 1-year increments. Go to https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/users/, click "My applications" and see if your last application for Newspapers.com was within the last 1 year. If it was, let me know, otherwise click "Request renewal" on your most recent application. -- Netoholic @ 02:55, 19 November 2021 (UTC)
Status is "renewal submitted" from 2018. Clicked the "request renewal" button. --Orange Mike | Talk 03:02, 19 November 2021 (UTC)
"This object cannot be renewed. (This probably means that you have already requested that it be renewed.)" --Orange Mike | Talk 14:29, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
@Orangemike: - Got your renewal request dated Nov. 19, 2021. The provider confirmed back on Nov 29 that your account was upgraded. -- Netoholic @ 20:13, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
"You're currently a Registered Guest. This free subscription gets you access to search newspapers but you will not be able to view the full page. Get a paid subscription for access." --Orange Mike | Talk 05:39, 2 December 2021 (UTC)
@Orangemike: - Go to https://www.newspapers.com/account/ (make sure you are logged into their site). Under "Plan" what does it say? Also, does the email address there match the email address you gave in your application for this on Misplaced Pages Library? -- Netoholic @ 10:19, 2 December 2021 (UTC)
"YOUR PLAN - Registered Guest Limited Access - You can only search and browse newspaper archives." And the e-mail address I always use is orange mike atsign gmail dot com (with orangemike being one word). --Orange Mike | Talk 14:47, 2 December 2021 (UTC)
@Orangemike: That explains things. In your Nov. 19, 2021 renewal request, you gave your email address as "wikipedia.org" instead of "gmail.com". The renewal you put in yesterday has the right email, so I'll send out a corrected request with the next batch to the partner within a few days. -- Netoholic @ 21:29, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

Newspapers.com renewal error

Hi there,

I requested a renewal for complimentary access to Newspapers.com on January 8.

--Birdienest81talk 12:55, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
@Birdienest81: The request was submitted a few days ago but I haven't heard back from the partner contact. Please change your account there back to the original email address (gmail) until they process your upgrade, because that's the information I sent them. You will get an email from them once its completed. -- Netoholic @ 13:06, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
@Netoholic: Newspapers.com does not seem to let me change the email back to Gmail. When I up the gmail address, it reads "Email is already in use by another account."
--Birdienest81talk 11:17, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
@Birdienest81: Try doing a password reset using the gmail address. Maybe they made you a new account. -- Netoholic @ 02:30, 23 January 2022 (UTC)

Achieving consensus at Talk:Cross-country skiing (sport)?

Netoholic, you are invited to participate in a ranked-choice poll at Talk:Cross-country skiing (sport)#Ranked-choice poll of alternatives offered, which may help arrive at a consensus among the choices discussed. I have set up an opportunity for you to do so. Cheers, HopsonRoad (talk) 17:53, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

Hi Netoholic, I understand your good-faith concern about WP:NOTVOTE, which says, "The words "vote" and "voting" have a variety of connotations, but they are commonly associated specifically with ballot-casting or majority voting." It goes on to say, "Different terminology (e.g. "seeking views", "polling" and "commenting") may be preferable." Indeed, what I have offered was a poll to help guide those participating in the discussion to consensus in a situation where none of the alternatives offered is "wrong"; there's just a question of preference among them.
WP:NOVOTE goes on to state the "communal norm that it is "not the vote" that matters, but the reasoning behind the !vote that is important." I suggest that the reasoning has been presented over a range of similar alternatives, so the poll, complete with comment, helps focus the discussion to where a choice that people can live with emerges.
I invite you to remove the collapsed format and participate. If you have a better path to consensus, I'm very interested in knowing it! Cheers, HopsonRoad (talk) 15:03, 22 January 2022 (UTC)

Renewing DS awareness

Renewing since it has been more than a year since you were last alerted:

This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.

You have shown interest in gender-related disputes or controversies or in people associated with them. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Misplaced Pages's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

Newspapers.com account not processing

A while back, you sent a submission to the Newspapers.com. However, as of January 16, 2023, I still had'nt received an application back to the site. Is there anything that I can do atm? Yoshiman6464 23:09, 16 January 2023 (UTC)

You would have been contacted by email on Dec 22 at the .edu email address you use for your account on Newspapers.com. Can you check for that? -- Netoholic @ 03:52, 17 January 2023 (UTC)
Of course. But on the site, I changed by Email since I recently graduated. Yoshiman6464 13:21, 18 January 2023 (UTC)
Yes, but it looks like your Misplaced Pages Library application used the previous address, and that's what we communicated to the partner. They would have sent confirmation to that email address. If you have access to it, please check there. Otherwise, we'll need to provide your current account info to Newspapers.com. If you can't access your other email, then please put in a new application and fully update the account address to what you're using currently. -- Netoholic @ 15:35, 18 January 2023 (UTC)

Source of Edmond Hoyle's portrait?

Hi! This is a long shot, but do you by any chance remember where you found File:Edmond Hoyle.jpg in 2004? I'm trying to confirm that it's actually a portrait of the man. Jyamine (talk) 16:05, 30 April 2023 (UTC)

Its a fair question, but my original upload was deleted, so I don't have anything to jog my memory. Perhaps there is something in the deleted history at en:File:Edmond Hoyle.jpg. @Maxim:, you were the deleting admin, would you be able to check the edit comments or page text for me to see if I provided a source? If there's nothing, then I'd be happy to help research it. -- Netoholic @ 06:56, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
Unfortunately, no, there's absolutely nothing in the history:
(diff) 06:40, 4 November 2007 . . SieBot (talk | contribs | block) m 105 bytes (Exact duplicate on Commons with same name)
(diff) 04:14, 23 December 2004 . . Mattingly23 (talk | contribs | block) 13 bytes (added pd tag)
(diff) 04:35, 6 August 2004 . . Netoholic (talk | contribs | block) empty
After all it was mid-2004, and it wasn't particularly standard to systematically add attribution or copyright tags to images just yet. :-) Maxim (talk) 11:07, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
Thanks anyway! Jyamine (talk) 12:51, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
I've removed the image from the en Misplaced Pages article as I'm more convinced its not genuine. Will have to look into renaming or deleting from Commons though. -- Netoholic @ 14:25, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
