== Uploading images ==

It's a matter of personal preference, as far as I am concerned. It is probably better to upload them onto the , be sure to follow the conventions there and at least tag the image with a category. It's easier to upload images onto Misplaced Pages directly, and someone will eventually load it onto the commons. Once you've uploaded someone else's image that you have permission for you'll need to email the permission you've obtained for that image to Misplaced Pages as spelled out in ] (unless they are prepared to upload it themelsves). A bit of a trial for the people kind enough to give us permission but I guess its their to protect them.

I'll admit they are not an obligation, but I find it highly revealing that a majority of articles that can ''do'' include page numbers in the current FA log. I don't request something like ] or ] <small>()</small>, both of which are ridiculous (each in their own way). Another option is a "first ref abbreviated" system as for ] (which I also used for a few paper refs in '']''), although I've found I liked that system less, because you have to hunt the original citations in preceding footnotes. ] 15:54, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

::I wouldn't trust the Avibase list too much. It uses US names and ignores generally accepted splits, so all the European lists, except the ones I constructed, have ], but not ]. The status is often wrong, but varies from list to list (often rare species are not tagged as such). It's best to find a second source. Me again. The links below may interest you. As you say, the National Bird may not be the same as the bird on the Coat of Arms. It would be confusing, but certainly is possible. Two different genus names show up for the caracara.

WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Misplaced Pages talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. The Core Contest—Misplaced Pages's most exciting contest—returns again this year from April 15 to May 31. The goal: to improve vital or other core articles, with a focus on those in the worst state of disrepair. Editing can be done individually, but in the past groups have also successfully competed. There is £300 of prize money divided among editors who provide the "best additive encyclopedic value". Signups are open now. A look at what we've accomplished, working together

It's been a busy first quarter for the project, with a staggering 12 new good articles added since the beginning of the year. Esculenta has led the charge, with assistance from an editor who is thus far unaffiliated with the project. Many thanks to them and to the reviewers who worked with them to help improve the articles. As ever, there's still plenty to do...

Punctelia, a genus of foliose lichens, was our first new good article of the year
Family Teloschistaceae featured on the main page.
Project news
  • Teloschistaceae appeared on Misplaced Pages's main page as the featured article on 19 February. Kudos to Esculenta, who shepherded the article to its FA star at the end of last year.
  • MerielGJones has expanded her list of contributions featuring important lichenologists, adding a trio of articles in January about British experts: Frank Hatton Brightman, Brian William Fox and William Mudd. Esculenta added an article for American Reginald Heber Howe, Jr.
  • All articles (plus lists, categories, redirects, etc.) currently listed under the project's purview have been assessed for their importance and quality. That's nearly 6,000 in total!
  • We're still working on the outline for the updated lichen article. Once the bare bones have been established and the references collected, we'll start a complete rewrite of this keystone article. Feel free to contribute your ideas!
Newsletter challenge

MariahKRogers accepted the last issue's challenge and updated our Gassicurtia article with four additional species now recognised by Species Fungorum as being in the genus.

This time around, we're looking for someone willing to update the species listed in the Byssoloma article, last checked in April of 2021. Species Fungorum now shows five additional species in the genus. The editor who updates the article will receive public kudos in the next newsletter.
