I think there needs to be a section that points out the distortions he used to have on his official biography, even though the distortions aren't repeated here. For example, he wasn't born in Harlem, didn't pass the bar, and wasn't an Assistant District Attorney, but he didn't correct the record until it was caught by others. ] (]) 23:07, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
:#There is no such title as "Acting Lt. Gov." The President pro tem assumes the duties of the Lt. Gov., but those are, AFAIK, limited to presiding over the Senate and taking over if the Governor is incapacitated. He doesn't get an executive office space, doesn't get the pay of a Lt. :Okay, I've been working on this section to try and be as specific as possible, but I'm starting to come to the conclusion that it doesn't belong in the article. First of all, the article isn't really critical of him, although it does point out that his early entries in the New York Red Book contained the errors you mention (although according to the source, he is allowed to use the title "Assistant District Attorney.") even though he didn't pass the bar. But according to the article, the errors had been corrected ''fifteen years earlier''. I haven't found any evidence that there was any controversy at the time. His stand on embryonic stem cell research could justify a "controvery" section, but I'm not sure that the Observer article really does. ] (]) 18:55, 11 March 2008 (UTC)SixFourThree

"With his swearing-in, Paterson became the first Lieutenant Governor elevated to the governorship in New York due to a vacancy since 1973, when Lieutenant Governor Malcolm Wilson became Governor when Nelson Rockefeller resigned in order to serve as Vice-President of the United States in the administration of President Gerald R. Ford."
This is incorrect. Rockefeller resigned as governor in December 1973, while Ford was still vice president, allegedly to devote time to some commissions he'd set up but perhaps to prepare for a final run at the presidency in 1976 or perhaps just to give Wilson a leg up on the 1974 gubernatorial race. Anyway, the point is that Rockefeller did not resign the governorship in order to become vice president, as the next vacancy in the vice presidency (when Ford ascended to the presidency) didn't occur until eight months later. I didn't make the edit because there are footnotes involved and I didn't want to mess it up beyond repair.
::::That seems appropriate, since his not passing the bar reveals more about the subject and his career (tying it into his later efforts to change the way the bar is administered to disabled persons). That warrants keeping. ] (]) 14:36, 12 March 2008 (UTC)SixFourThree

==NY Lieutenant Governor==
Does anyone know who becomes Lieutenant Governor if the governor resigns? Or is the position left vacant instead? ] (]) 20:33, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

: Yes, Bruno would get the tie-breaking vote in the Senate. This is actually very significant, as the balance is currently 32-30, with the Democrats looking to pick up one seat this fall which would have given them a 31-31 tie and thus control of the chamber, as Paterson would be the tiebreaking vote. Now, because Bruno will be filling that role, a one-seat pickup won't give the Dems control. Worth a bit more investigation is what the clause in the NY constitution saying that "the LG shall assume the role of Gov when the Gov is out of state" really means. #'''Absolutely Support''' Why should anyone oppose the succession of Paterson to the governorship? I fully support Paterson, it's a great day for people with disabilities. ] (]) 18:51, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
#: <sigh> Nobody is supporting or opposing his ''succession'' to governor. This poll was about whether, a couple days ago when it was not clear if Spitzer was going to resign, whether it was appropriate to mention in the Misplaced Pages article about Paterson whether he was likely to become the first blind governor. The point is now pretty much moot, as nobody seems to disagree that it should be included. --] (]) 18:57, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
:::: I think we have some misunderstandings while we two both agree on the same point. :::::No, you still don't understand. Nobody is worried about "negativity if we mention that he is blind" or anything touchy-feely like that. The concern was that ''two days ago'', it was not certain whether Spitzer would be resigning, and according to various Misplaced Pages policies (], ], ], ]) we need to be very careful about putting speculation in an article about a living person about something that ''might'' happen. The concern was not "negativity," it was that, should Spitzer have refused to resign, Misplaced Pages's credibility could be damaged by talking about something as if it were a sure thing, when actually it wasn't.
:::::Even still, many people (as you can see here) felt that even two days ago, it was still relevant to include that in the article. Now, it is a moot point. Everybody agrees it should be included in the article. This straw poll is now obsolete, because everybody agrees that the likely succession should be discussed. --] (]) 19:48, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

#'''Support''' There is a very real chance that Governor Spitzer resigns, and the article should note this possibility, for the same reason it notes that Paterson was rumored to be a possible successor to Clinton. None of these things are certain, but they are very possible that they do occur. ] (]) 21:11, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
#'''Support''' It is a notable enough possibility for a news story specifically on the topic. —](]•]) 21:40, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
#'''Absolutely Support''' - Spitzer is expected to resign. That means Paterson could be taking over any day now. ''']''' '']'' 22:44, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
#'''Absolutely Support''' - Spitzer made his name in cleaning up professional malfeasance. The absolute taint of his involvement with a prostitute and the glaring hypocrisy dictate that he resign immediately. Any reasonable tea-leaf-reading would yield the result that Paterson will succeed him in a matter of days. Furthermore, the Democrats are in the thicket of a highly charged presidential campaign. Given that his integrity is on the line and that cleanliness of the New York DP would be important for the party, one can further anticipate that he will resign. ] (]) 23:18, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
#'''Support''' - Yes it is quite relevant, ground breaking, and describes a current event. Now, this may be violating to the high extent the Assume Good Faith policy ] (we're all human anyway), and not directed to anyone in particular, but I hope, for crying out loud, that if one opposes this inclusion in the article, it would be the case for a white individual also. Anyway, yes it may be speculative or so because Spitzer hasn't ''officially'' resigned, and we shouldn't assume he will, even though likely (see ] vs. ] - I learned in Logic class, very fun), but it is quite important that this may happen, and is in the works as we speak, or type rather, that the governor's term seems in jeopardy due to exponentially increasing pressure to resign, a very strong inductive argument. ~ ] (]) 03:43, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
#'''Support''' I've changed my opinon. It's now very apparent, Spitzer will either resign or be impeached. ] (]) 17:20, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
#'''Conditional support''' The speculation of his becoming Governor should be clearly marked for what it is: Major media outlets are pointing out that if Spitzer loses his position due this recent scandal (a reasonable avenue of considering near-future developments, which ''is'' part of the ''media's'' job) then Paterson will be elevated to Governor of one of the most wealthy and populous states of the Union. Misplaced Pages users are flocking to this article to get information about the man who might soon be Governor, ''for this reason'', not for any points of argument over Misplaced Pages policy. ''Therefore'' we must stress that the ''media speculates'' about Paterson's future--a notable and appropriate addition to his biography--not simply declare potential future conditions as an "if/then", which ''would'' be ''Misplaced Pages'' speculating. --'''<font color="#FF3300">]</font>''' <font color="#FF3300">]</font> 22:57, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

::*To answer this, ] is not or was in any very significant risk of losing his position in any way. :::*I'm just unconfortable with a line that starts with ''If''. The 'If' means speculation. ] (]) 14:02, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
#'''oppose''' at this point we are talking about rumors. should we go to every Lieutenant Governor page and add "if Governor resigns he/she will be named Governor?" ] (]) 21:16, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
::*No. Not a rumor. Spitzer is involved in a scandal. The rumor is that he will resign, but either way, it's a legitimate possibility. ''']''' '']'' 22:54, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
*'''Oppose''' ''per'' ]:"Individual scheduled or expected future events should only be included if the event is notable '''''and almost certain to take place'''''" . It's obviously notable, so let's move to "almost certain": the examples of suitable topics about future events that are "almost certain" to occur are the 2010 U.S. Senate elections and 2016 Summer Olympics. By contrast, Spitzer is not ''almost certain'' to resign: he is only ''very likely'' to resign, which falls far short of the threshold required by the policy. Moreover, Paterson's ascent to the governor's chair stands at one remove from this ''very likely'' but not "almost certain" event, and so is doubly unsuitable for inclusion at this time. And Spitzer is , so this needs to come out, consensus or no. Finally, I don't think this belongs in the lead until Paterson actually is governor, even if there's a case to be made for it belonging in the article. --]<small>(])</small> 21:21, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
::It is not "very likely" he will step down. It is almost as likely as it is that President Bush will vacate the White House on ], ]. As I said below, depending on what ''involved'' means, Spitzer could go to jail. I do not think that this violates WP:CRYSTAL any more than it would have if Misplaced Pages had been around to cover the Watergate scandal. If Nixon had not resigned, he '''''would''''' have been impeached. The New York State Assembly's minority leader has already threatened to start formally moving toward impeachment if Spitzer does not resign with 48 hrs. Since Spitzer did not deny being involved with the prostitution ring, I cannot conceive anything that could save him from impeachment. ]]] 21:48, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
:::I have to agree with this. Based on what I read from the Republican minority leader today, it's a sure thing Spitzer resigns. He doesn't want the humiliation of impeachment. ''']''' '']'' 22:02, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
:::No, it's far less certain that Spitzer will resign the governorship than that Bush will leave the White House in January '09. Spitzer could, in principle, for example, dig in his heels and wait to be impeached and then tried. He won't -- he will in all likelihood resign tomorrow -- but "in all likelihood" is not the threshold for inclusion of a future event in a Misplaced Pages article: that threshold is that the event "almost certain to take place". There is quite a gulf between something that everybody is expecting to happen and very probably will (Spitzer's resignation) and something that is required by statute (Bush's relinquishing the Presidency following the inauguration of his successor). This gulf also helps distinguish what does not belong in a Misplaced Pages article from what does.
== Not seeking reelection ==
:::You mention that you "cannot conceive anything that could save him from impeachment". This is quite a fair judgement and I agree -- but, first, what you or I "cannot conceive" alternatives to is also not a basis for inclusion in a Misplaced Pages article. Second, impeachment would not in itself remove Spitzer from office anyway.
. | |||
:::So a lot of things might happen. The most likely outcome is that Spitzer will resign tomorrow or soon after, but just because it's very likely is not in itself a reason to include it -- not even in an article on Spitzer or the scandal, but in a passage about whether David Paterson may become the first blind governor of a U.S. State! This is just plain premature. There will be plenty of time to include it if and when it happens.
] (]) 15:05, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
:::Finally, it's worth being a little more circumspect about the possibility of criminal sanction when Governor Spitzer has not been charged with a crime. ::::They are still "plans", and this is a case of one source reporting on what some other source said. That's how speculation spreads. This is a frequent problem when dealing with current events on Misplaced Pages. Whenever something of this magnitude is about to happen, it often breaks in advance. They need the press to know about it in advance so they can set up the press conference, and of course the press runs their preliminary stories on it. Obviously, if this wasn't true, someone in as precarious a position as Paterson would be refuting it since it broke. But still, he hasn't officially rescinded his campaign yet. :::Exactly what I was thinking. Although Dick Cheney has had a slight possibility of being President for what, 7 years, it was not (and is not) likely he would ever be elevated. Nah, I don't like it, as per ]. First of all, he is not legally "incoming governor." There is no such title, at least not in the case of an announced ''intention'' to resign. Second of all, there is absolutely no certainty that he will take office on March 17th, and as per ] we shouldn't say so. Any number of things could happen. Spitzer has every right to change his mind. A crisis could grip New York that would cause them to want to delay the changeover in power. Paterson could resign first. Paterson could be injured or killed. Even if these things are unlikely, they illustrate the foolishness of proclaiming the date of changeover as March 17th. ::Context of the following comment: On my talk page, the other editor mentioned ] as an example of precedent.
::The difference with Dmitry Medvedev is that he is ''officially'' "president-elect" according to the Russian constitution. In the NYS consitution, there is no such title as "incoming governor" that is triggered when the previous governor makes an announcement of intention to resign.
::To say it another way: When Medvedev won the election, a legal process was set in place such that he is officially president-elect, and if nothing else happens then he automatically becomes president on such-and-such a day. However, when Spitzer announced his resignation, no such legal process was set in motion. If nothing else happens, Spitzer will still be governor Monday. Now, we can pretty safely assume Spitzer will resign Monday, but there is no legal compulsion for him to do so. Paterson is not officially incoming. --] (]) 18:12, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

== Lawsuit over allegations of bias ==
I have tagged this section as needing expansion. It is very brief and omits a bunch of notable information. Paterson was under heavy pressure to resign from his position as governor in 2010 due to allegations against him, but the article doesn't say so. Other, less significant information about Paterson's career is given much more attention in the article.
Some potentially helpful sources include:
Someone added a section "Lawsuit over allegations of bias" with a lot of text copied directly from he tabs (Post and Daily News), as well as references to archives of upstate papers that can't be accessed without paying a fee to "newswire". The refs seemed to be randomly spread in the two-paragraph section, not tied to the sentences they footnoted. So I scoured the whole thing down to one paragraph with a long direct quote from one of the stories. Everything there is supported by just the 2 refs, Post and News. Still might be a tempest in a teapot, worthy of more shortening, but it's better than the junk originally added. ] (]) 20:16, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

It was widely reported upon his swearing in that Paterson was the first legally blind governor in the nations history. However, the article now says that this is not so, that he is the second. There was a source, and I checked it out. Link was to the Wayback Machine, and the article says absolutely nothing about there being a previous blind governor.
So I did some searching, and found a better article from the New York Times entitled, "First Legally Blind Governor? Not Quite". I read it, and it told of the 13-day governorship of Bob Cowley Riley, who took over when the governor of the Arkansas, Dale Bumpers, resigned to take his new post (in the US Senate) on January 3, 1975. Riley served for 11 days, until David Pryor, the new governor (elected in November) was to be inaugurated. Riley had been blinded while in the Marines, so there's your first blind governor, right?
Well, in some other states, that would be so. But in Arkansas, he was only the "Acting Governor". He never took the oath of office, he was never sworn in. Arkansas does not give him a number in their list of governors (Bumpers was the 38th Governor, Pryor was the 39th). So it's a bit messy, I think. I'm going to rewrite the passage in a way that I think is honest, but am happy to discuss it with anyone who disagrees with what I've done. ]]] 23:18, 19 February 2021 (UTC)

::First off, my apologies. My skill with references is rather pathetic, but I previewed it and ''thought'' it was fine. And now, when I look at it, I don't see the error. What am I missing? The relevant article (the one I found) is linked, the other that had nothing relevant is gone, and it looks fine to me. I'm not doubting you, Mikeblas, I'm just baffled. Not that it's the first time. ]]] 23:09, 23 February 2021 (UTC) |

Andrew Cuomo
Why isn't he mentioned in the "Senate Appointment" section? He is one of the main candidates fo Hillary Clinton's seat. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tad Lincoln (talk • contribs) 03:21, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
Corrected NY Post quotation
"Overall, Paterson has chalked up a heavily liberal record during his more than two decades in state government. " is correct, but it did not end with, "It was bad...really, bad." —Preceding unsigned comment added by Aruhnka (talk • contribs) 11:23, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
Acting Lt. Gov.
As of today, it should be Pedro Espada, Jr., not Dean Skelos. Comments? Bearian (talk) 22:02, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
- There is no such title as "Acting Lt. Gov." The President pro tem assumes the duties of the Lt. Gov., but those are, AFAIK, limited to presiding over the Senate and taking over if the Governor is incapacitated. He doesn't get an executive office space, doesn't get the pay of a Lt. Gov., and would never be treated as anything other than one of the top legislators in Albany.
- Skelos disputes that Espada and Smith legally acquired their new offices. Until that legal question is resolved, we should be clear that the situation is in dispute.
- Powers 22:27, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
- O.K. I think you mean that "Smith disputes that Espada and Skelos...." :-) Bearian (talk) 23:12, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
Power rating in lead
I removed "worst" govenor from lead. Maybe work into article with better sources/data. --Tom (talk) 19:13, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
- I have rolled back. The lead did not say "worst", it said this: "Paterson is currently the least popular governor in the United States according to an average of six May 2009 polls, with a net approval/disapproval score of -48" and it is sourced to , which is a fine source. The statement is factual, and FiveThirtyEight.com is (among other things) the first blog ever selected as a Notable Narrative by the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University. It's at least as credible as Time Magazine or some similar national publication. – Quadell 17:36, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
- Maybe work it into the body of the article, if at all, but not needed in the lead. Thanks, --Tom (talk) 18:10, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
Article too long...create new article on the Gillibrand Senate appt?
This article is too long, so why don't we take parts of this, Gillibrand's, and Caroline Kennedy's to form a new article on the Kirsten Gillibrand Senate Appointment? 04:09, 25 July 2009 (UTC)
- That section on Gillibrand's appointment is well-sourced, accurate, but just out-weighs other material in the article. Summary form, not blow-by-blow. Frankly, Gillibrand's appointment can be completely covered in her bio. It's not that big a deal for a stand-alone article. patsw (talk) 15:46, 20 July 2013 (UTC)
Incorrect Rockefeller information
—Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.172.249.116 (talk) 16:22, 19 September 2009 (UTC)
Lieutenant Governor Ravitch
Now that Richard Ravitch has been established as Lieutenant Governor, should we 'collapse' the list of 'Acting LTGs' in the Infobox, with the heading Acting Lieutenant Governors? GoodDay (talk) 20:51, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
"and the highest-ranking black elected official in the history of New York State"
H Carl McCall was elected NYS Comptroller in 1994 and 1998, making him both a higher ranking official than the Senate Minority Leader, and still the highest elected Black official in NYS history. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Clarkpark (talk • contribs) 02:09, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
Paterson to resign?

Blind governor?!
If he is blind, then does he read the legislations that he has to sign in Braille? Can someone explain how his staff accommodate his needs?--478jjjz (talk) 02:19, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
- He's legally blind, not completely blind. He puts his face very close to a document when signing. Powers 00:10, 13 February 2010 (UTC)
Not seeking reelection
NYDailyNews is reporting he won't see reelection in 2010..

- The AP, NY1, WSJ, MSNBC, NYT, NewsDay etc., etc., etc. all say he will drop out of the race. From my reading of WP:CRYSTAL, this seems to be suitable to include in the article, but apparently not everybody think so. --Jatkins 17:06, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
- "Will drop out" and "he has announced he is dropping out" are not the same thing. The former is a prediction; the latter is reported, citeable information. Frank | talk 17:02, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
- "Democratic officials in Washington were informed of Mr. Paterson's plans early Friday, the Associated Press reported." ...is written in past tense, and is not speculation. --Jatkins 17:06, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
- They are still "plans", and this is a case of one source reporting on what some other source said. That's how speculation spreads. Note that I'm not saying this isn't a foregone conclusion; what I'm saying is that this is an encyclopedia, and as such, this is inappropriate. It can wait a few hours - if it takes that long. Frank | talk 17:10, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
- I guess the longest we'll have to wait for official confirmation is the planned press conference, though, like you say, it could come sooner if the campaign confirms it. --Jatkins 17:12, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

He still has filed the paperwork, so he's running until he's not running. --Muboshgu (talk) 19:59, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

Excuse my ignorance
why does it not cover the most recent "Govennor covering up allegeed spousal abuse of subordaniate " is this guy who is three weeks of SNL coverage really this far in the backwater of wikipedia?Weaponbb7 (talk) 00:38, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
- More than a tenth of the article (i actually measured and it is 12K of a 99K article) is devoted to the case see: David Paterson#Domestic abuse and World Series tickets scandalsAmericasroof (talk) 02:13, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
- The timeline for that section seems unduly long. Does so much detail need to be included in the section? It would appear to violate weight concerns. Arzel (talk) 02:34, 27 August 2010 (UTC)
- My intentions is to spin it off. It developed when it looked like the governor might resign because of the events. I will try to spin it off this weekend and just leave a paragraph or two. There's a lot of other material in the article that is hopelessly out of date (including the budget stuff).Americasroof (talk) 04:08, 27 August 2010 (UTC)
SNL appearance produced a pretty decent "quote"
"Working in Albany is just like watching Saturday Night Live -- there are a lot of characters, it's funny for 10 minutes, and then you just want it to be *over*." 199.214.17.10 (talk) 17:59, 27 September 2010 (UTC)
- Hah. Considering the SNL controversy and the general mess that is Albany, this quote may merit inclusion. Maybe. --Muboshgu (talk) 18:14, 27 September 2010 (UTC)
Governor end date. 2010 vs. 2011
Since Andrew Cuomo took office at 12:01 AM on 1/1/11, that means that Paterson was governor from 12:00 midnight to 12:01 am on 1/1/11. Peacewashlove (talk) 01:36, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
- Not necessarily. His term might have ended at midnight, not necessarily when the new Governor starts. There's probably a law that provides for succession during the interval. The State's Constitution might have a provision; otherwise, statutes likely do. Something similar happens with the U.S. Presidency. Nick Levinson (talk) 20:57, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
Blacklisted Links Found on the Main Page
Cyberbot II has detected that page contains external links that have either been globally or locally blacklisted. Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed, or are highly innappropriate for Misplaced Pages. This, however, doesn't necessarily mean it's spam, or not a good link. If the link is a good link, you may wish to request whitelisting by going to the request page for whitelisting. If you feel the link being caught by the blacklist is a false positive, or no longer needed on the blacklist, you may request the regex be removed or altered at the blacklist request page. If the link is blacklisted globally and you feel the above applies you may request to whitelist it using the before mentioned request page, or request it's removal, or alteration, at the request page on meta. When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags. The whitelisting process can take its time so once a request has been filled out, you may set the invisible parameter on the tag to true. Please be aware that the bot will replace removed tags, and will remove misplaced tags regularly.

"Governor" per MOS:CAPS
Per MOS:CAPS and the discussion of MOS:CAPSat Misplaced Pages talk:Manual of Style/Capital letters, the title of "Governor" should be in lowercase. Additionally, MOS:CONSISTENCY also applies. Any additional discussion, if necessary, should occur here, not in the edit log. X4n6 (talk) 21:48, 27 May 2017 (UTC)
- According to MOS:CAPS, the intro here should read "...served as the 55th Governor of New York", not "...served as the 55th governor of New York". GoodDay (talk) 14:37, 11 June 2017 (UTC)

'Allegations against the Paterson administration' section needs expansion
I have tagged this section as needing expansion. It is very brief and omits a bunch of notable information. Paterson was under heavy pressure to resign from his position as governor in 2010 due to allegations against him, but the article doesn't say so. Other, less significant information about Paterson's career is given much more attention in the article.
Some potentially helpful sources include:

First Blind Governor?
Unschool 23:18, 19 February 2021 (UTC)
- Unschool made this change, but it looks like they deleted an in-use reference definition leaving the article with a referencing error. What is the planned fix? Maybe the reference should be restored, but if the use is contentious, then I'd rather not restore it just yet. But as it stands now, the article has a visible error and other material is left unsourced. -- Mikeblas (talk) 20:55, 23 February 2021 (UTC)
- First off, my apologies. My skill with references is rather pathetic, but I previewed it and thought it was fine. And now, when I look at it, I don't see the error. What am I missing? The relevant article (the one I found) is linked, the other that had nothing relevant is gone, and it looks fine to me. I'm not doubting you, Mikeblas, I'm just baffled. Not that it's the first time.
