I forgot to mention, {{user|Epbr123}} has a very helpful checklist on his userpage that you might go over in class, and {{user|Gimmetrow}} started a page called Moslite somewhere, which might not be completely finished yet, but if you ask him, it's probably also something you can go over in class just to get the editors started on the most frequent, basic and simple MoS stuff that every Wiki editor should know. ] (]) 08:31, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

Sorry to have pushed too much. I double checked and discovered I've nominated all your project's GAs. I realize now that that is a bit much. I was thinking more of the GA process which can drag on forever. You have to get them in the queue ready or not! But my GA noms have been sincere. Everything I've nominated is better than most that appears at GA and really does have a chance at passing the criteria. GA isn't much of a hurdle. Nothing like FA. The editors who are leading you to FA are the best on Misplaced Pages. However - my opinion only - FA can spiral into one of the nastiest places on Misplaced Pages. I'm crossing my finders and toes. Good luck. Cheers! ] (]) 04:28, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

I've posted a list of issues at the ]; it's a fairly intimidating list, and it only addresses the first two sections of the article. Hi JBmurray, I discovered another major lack of citations ] ] issue with what appears to be another article being edited by your class. It’s admirable that you are taking on education on editing on Misplaced Pages, something that I believe more people should know how to do properly. Hopefully when finished with your class, the new users enjoyed the experience and continue to be active in the editor community! I removed a large section of Essay-style writing with no citations and sources despite close paraphrasing and/or quoting of books and options on ]. Per ] ''All quotations, and any material whose verifiability has been challenged or is likely to be challenged, must include an inline citation that directly supports the material. Any material that needs a source but does not have one may be removed.'' And ] which calls for ''infringing content should be removed...'' I have RV’d the edit until the user can provide citations and references along the Misplaced Pages guidelines. Perhaps it would be helpful as their instructor to present a lesson on WP:VER, citations, references, ] and similar subjects.--] (]) 02:35, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

:: Hi JB, Thanks for your REs on the talk page. As you may have guessed, I'm an editor who highly values refs and cites and also a copyvio reverter. Those issues often hold back Misplaced Pages outside of the WP community and in academia who see it as an unreliable source. Outsiders/non-users see it a a free-for-all with no rules and regulations, when in fact the community is well structured. One of my major goals is to personally add well-referenced content as well as positively encouraging others to do the same. Hopefully your students are having a good experience and gaining valuable work to becoming well-rounded editors. I added a couple '''Under Construction''' tags to ] and ] If you have other pages as part of the class assignment, it might be helpful for you to add that tag to them. Hopefully that will help other editors to avoid ] and work with your student editors in an effective manner per ]. :Hi there. Have at it. But I noticed that the combination of templates in use there wasn't working, in that clicking on the links in the footnotes wasn't directing you to the bibliography.
:After a few experiments, I think that could be fixed merely by changing the "cite book" (etc.) templates to "citation." So the "harvnb" templates could be returned to the "sfn" ones. I have to admit I was unfamiliar with that template, but like its simplicity. I may use them in other articles I'm working on.
:Anyhow, as I say, I'm easy. But I simply noticed that the combination in use wasn't doing what was intended. --] (] • ]) 15:12, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

Copy remains a pain for me. No matter how much I work on an article, a lack of mastery over English keeps me failing. :Ah! So, it failed. I was kind of expecting that you'd do a review to address problems '''before''' you failed it. I could have had a chance to solve the problems as much I can. But, well, you decided to fail it first and do a review then. Thanks for lending a hand. It is getting increasingly difficult to get someone to help you on the Misplaced Pages. A very refreshing experience this was. I guess, I'll have t address these issues and resubmit the article. The original article got through easily, then it was delisted making a couple of issues, now it can't get through even while all that was addressed. It seems the quality bar is getting higher by the minute. Unfortunately there is little help forthcoming in understanding the ever-higher standards. There seems to be little difference in the quality requirements of an FA and a GA now, only that FAs are more participatory. Thanks anyways for identifying the problems. Now I can work on them.
:By the way, Bangladesh has less than 1% internet use penetration, and just over 3% newspaper readership penetration, and will never have as good online coverage as any country in the developed North. That means the current tendencies will make it inherently more difficult of countries like Bangladesh to pass quality standards, which is heavily built on the availability of information in the developed countries. I have no clue how I can work around that. <font face="Kristen ITC" color="deeppink">]</font>(] • ]) 11:19, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

:::Sure. As I see, most of the issues are easily solvable. And, if you just told me what was the problem, as I requested, I could have addressed most of them fine. Could you tell me how the misunderstanding could be removed? <font face="Kristen ITC" color="deeppink">]</font>(] • ]) 11:51, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
::::Aditya, I'm not sure it's a simple question of misunderstanding. And I doubt that arguing pro and con on the talk page will help things much. ::::::That's alright. And, thanks again for lending a hand (I really am thankful there, as my atrocious writing skills has become a real deterrent to quality improvement of the articles I work on). One '''big problem''' that you identified is real, and not mistaken. There is no indication in the article that the publication had an appropriate review. I am trying to look up one. Until that, I guess, I would rather stay put. But, I might come back with a request to take a look before I submit it again. More work is not problem, as long I know what has to be worked on (more often than not it's about copywriting, and adding clarifications). Thanks for the kindness. == A few thoughts ==

I think it's likely that the FA-team will do some kind of "lessons learned" review from this mission; no idea what that will look like but it should be interesting. One thing that occurs to me is that the value of our involvement is focused very heavily on the back end -- until the students get content into the article there's not much useful we can do. We knew that already but it may have implications for your course plan, if you do this again (and I gather you're considering it).

:And on this, yes, but you guys were encouraging from the get-go, which was grand. A lot of your role has been motivation and encouragement, which in some ways you do much better than I do! The students were a little slow off the mark at the initial stages: I think that's because they're not used to semester-long projects, but perhaps I could have helped here, too. Anyhow, we'll see. --] (]|]) 16:34, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

I do hope we can get some "lessons learned" from you, and from the students as well. I'd like to know, among other things, if this process worked well as a way to teach them the material: ] on what I enjoy on Misplaced Pages, written a few months ago, actually uses the analogy of Misplaced Pages as a classroom and FAC as a professor handing out grades, so I am curious to know whether real students and a real professor can work with Misplaced Pages in that way. You make an excellent point in your essay to the effect that this approach forces students to revisit their work and improve it. I would think this has value not only for making them re-evaluate their research and organizational skills, but it has direct pedagogical value too -- that process of reworking their own first drafts is surely a strong reinforcement of the material under review. I hope to hear that the students find the teaching method very effective for retaining and integrating what they learn. I'd also be interested to know what you think needs to change to make this more effective, both in your course plan, and in Misplaced Pages's internal processes. What would have happened if the FA team hadn't become involved? How much difference would it have made?

One other point: what are the implications of the fact that this kind of class can only be done once for a given topic? I assume you couldn't do the Dictator novel again. You might be able to do Latin American literature half a dozen more times, or more, but eventually the topic will be covered. A good thing for Misplaced Pages, but a pity if it's a great teaching method! ] ] 14:09, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

:In the de-briefing, I'm curious about the demographics of your students. It seems to me that none had any experience or interest in editing Misplaced Pages before your class. There is poor understanding of the actual demographics of Misplaced Pages itself. The anecdotal - apocryphal - understanding is that adolescent male Americans make up two thirds of admins. I have no idea where that understanding comes from or how it was determined. As for regular editors, the received wisdom is that male computer geeks between 15 and 25 predominate. I haven't found any reliable stats that confirm the myth - or debunk it. Cheers! ] (]) 16:25, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

::Thanks for these thoughts. Yup, I think a de-briefing is going to be important. On a couple of the issues you raise: 1) I think the FA team made a huge difference; I really hadn't realized at the outset just how amibitious this project was; 2) heh, I always teach different books, so the need to switch topic doesn't worry me; 3) the class demographics are the pretty mixed bunch that we get at UBC, with various nationalities and ethnicities. Anyhow, yes, more on this later. --] (]|]) 16:32, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

::Yeah, it can be deleted. I replaced it with a lower-resolution version that happened to be a gif rather than jpeg. --] (]|]) 22:11, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

:No problem! --] (]|]) 03:48, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Hey, I think this article is one of the MMMs that got a shot at FA, but I don't like the overall structure of the article, it mentions his early life but the years following that are not covered very well and the information that is present is spread out all over the place. When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

== Cabrera image ==

Hi Jbmurray, I didn’t want to leave your question about Estrada Cabrera hanging, so I’ll try to answer it here so the FAC doesn’t go further off track. To bore you:

The problem with the image is/was that we don’t conclusively know the image’s author or when the image was first published, the factors which determine copyright. I’ve no knowledge of Guatemalan copyright law, but U.S. images fall into the public domain if they were published before January 1, 1923. Given that Cabrera died in 1923, the image very likely existed prior to that date. The issue, however, is that merely existing and being published are different legal concepts. This image could have been taken from a private collection then distributed in, say, the 1950s – which would mean the copyright is still in effect. Alternatively, copyright duration can be determined by the life of the author. The Berne Convention establishes a minimum of 50 years after death, but countries vary (U.S. is 70 years, Mexico is 100 years, etc) We can’t use this criterion in this case, obviously, as the author is unknown. Long story short, we don’t know enough about the image’s origins to claim public domain, which means use on Wiki would have to be under “fair use” (i.e. we’d be back to square one). ]&nbsp;] 19:02, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Sicilian Baroque nominated for Featured Article Review

I have nominated Sicilian Baroque for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets featured article criteria. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Delist" the article's featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. -- Beland (talk) 00:35, 29 January 2020 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of And a body to remember with

Notice

The article And a body to remember with has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unsourced since 2009

While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. --Another Believer (Talk) 06:03, 6 February 2020 (UTC)

Class Editing

Hi JBmurray, I discovered another major lack of citations WP:YTCOPYRIGHT WP:RS issue with what appears to be another article being edited by your class. It’s admirable that you are taking on education on editing on Misplaced Pages, something that I believe more people should know how to do properly. Hopefully when finished with your class, the new users enjoyed the experience and continue to be active in the editor community! I removed a large section of Essay-style writing with no citations and sources despite close paraphrasing and/or quoting of books and options on Down These Mean Streets. Per WP:VER All quotations, and any material whose verifiability has been challenged or is likely to be challenged, must include an inline citation that directly supports the material. Any material that needs a source but does not have one may be removed. And WP:COPYVIO which calls for infringing content should be removed... I have RV’d the edit until the user can provide citations and references along the Misplaced Pages guidelines. Perhaps it would be helpful as their instructor to present a lesson on WP:VER, citations, references, WP:WHYCITE and similar subjects.--Bhockey10 (talk) 02:35, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi User:Bhockey10 and thanks for this. We will be talking about these issues tomorrow morning. For now, let me just say that these are works in progress. We have several weeks left with this project. Your comments on talk pages are most welcome. --jbmurray (talkcontribs) 07:13, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
Hi JB, Thanks for your REs on the talk page. I added a couple Under Construction tags to Down These Mean Streets and Gregorio Cortez If you have other pages as part of the class assignment, it might be helpful for you to add that tag to them. Hopefully that will help other editors to avoid WP:BITE and work with your student editors in an effective manner per WP:ASSIGN. Thanks again for your work and I hope they are enjoying the experience and we'll have a batch of young/eager editors who stick with the WP Community long after the project. Best Wishes! --Bhockey10 (talk) 20:11, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
Great, many thanks. Yes, absolutely I want my students to learn about adding well-referenced material, using reliable sources. The other article they are working on is The House on Mango Street. I generally avoid those "under construction" templates, but I may add one there, too. :) Thanks again. --jbmurray (talkcontribs) 20:28, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

Gregorio Cortez

I added a few bullets but didn't want to overwhelm them so stopped after a few sections. Looks like some good sources and useful material; the main thing at issue is encyclopedic voice. Pier Gerlofs Donia might be a decent model for them to follow: a folk hero, not yet a GA, but the voice is right -- no drama, just the facts. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 17:49, 20 March 2020 (UTC)

Thanks so much. Will get to this later today. --jbmurray (talkcontribs) 22:33, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
I'm happy to pick up the GA review if you want -- let me know. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 11:28, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
That would be cool. Frankly, myself I've been focussing on our other two articles, which need rather more work (though The House on Mango Street is pretty close; Down These Mean Streets is not). Tell me what you think! (And I promise I will get around to some reviewing myself!) --jbmurray (talkcontribs) 11:30, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
Will do. Have to work so may or may not be today; I may be taking a half-day. If not I will look tomorrow. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 11:32, 31 March 2020 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Gregorio Cortez

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Gregorio Cortez you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Mike Christie -- Mike Christie (talk) 11:20, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

Perfect, many thanks. I'm sure that @Pechodor13, Maymolina, and Chr66: will also be on the case. --jbmurray (talkcontribs) 15:14, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
I've completed a first pass. Can I assume that you've eyeballed the source quality and reliability yourself? I've noted one or two dubious sources in the review but you'll know better than I would whether the books cited are the right sort of scholarship. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 21:41, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

Citation style

I note that you changed the format of citation in the article on The Lady Vanishes. I also note at WP:CITEVAR it says: "Editors should not attempt to change an article's established citation style merely on the grounds of personal preference, to make it match other articles, or without first seeking consensus for the change." - kosboot (talk) 12:53, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

Hi there. Have at it. But I noticed that the combination of templates in use there wasn't working, in that clicking on the links in the footnotes wasn't directing you to the bibliography.
After a few experiments, I think that could be fixed merely by changing the "cite book" (etc.) templates to "citation." So the "harvnb" templates could be returned to the "sfn" ones. I have to admit I was unfamiliar with that template, but like its simplicity. I may use them in other articles I'm working on.
Anyhow, as I say, I'm easy. But I simply noticed that the combination in use wasn't doing what was intended. --jbmurray (talkcontribs) 15:12, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
Indeed in my early stages of editing on WP I used harv, but then I realized that SFN was created to improve upon harv and make citation work easier. I'll check to see what works & what doesn't. Thanks for your efforts. - kosboot (talk) 15:19, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Gregorio Cortez

The article Gregorio Cortez you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:Gregorio Cortez for issues which need to be addressed. Speedy deletion nomination of Talk:Peter Wall (property developer)/GA1

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, and welcome to Misplaced Pages. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Talk:Peter Wall (property developer)/GA1 requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, images, a rephrasing of the title, a question that should have been asked at the help or reference desks, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Misplaced Pages:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Missing ref from 12 years ago...

Hi, back in 2008 you added {{Harvnb|1993|p=35}} and {{Harvnb|1993|p=41}} to Domingo Faustino Sarmiento. Any recollection which source that might refer to? P.S. recommend installing a script (described at Category:Harv and Sfn no-target errors) to highlight such errors in the future. Renata (talk) 02:45, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

I need help to correct the nationality of Antoni Gaudí

Hola colega:

Por ejemplo: "Spanish architect from Catalonia" o "Catalan architect from Spain"?

--jbmurray (talkcontribs) 22:31, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)
