Hi JBmurray, I discovered another major lack of citations ] ] issue with what appears to be another article being edited by your class. It’s admirable that you are taking on education on editing on Misplaced Pages, something that I believe more people should know how to do properly. Hopefully when finished with your class, the new users enjoyed the experience and continue to be active in the editor community! I removed a large section of Essay-style writing with no citations and sources despite close paraphrasing and/or quoting of books and options on ]. Per ] ''All quotations, and any material whose verifiability has been challenged or is likely to be challenged, must include an inline citation that directly supports the material. Any material that needs a source but does not have one may be removed.'' And ] which calls for ''infringing content should be removed...'' I have RV’d the edit until the user can provide citations and references along the Misplaced Pages guidelines. Perhaps it would be helpful as their instructor to present a lesson on WP:VER, citations, references, ] and similar subjects.--] (]) 02:35, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
:Hi ] and thanks for this. We will be talking about these issues tomorrow morning. For now, let me just say that these are works in progress. We have several weeks left with this project. Your comments on talk pages are most welcome. --] (] • ]) 07:13, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
:: Hi JB, Thanks for your REs on the talk page. As you may have guessed, I'm an editor who highly values refs and cites and also a copyvio reverter. Those issues often hold back Misplaced Pages outside of the WP community and in academia who see it as an unreliable source. Outsiders/non-users see it a a free-for-all with no rules and regulations, when in fact the community is well structured. One of my major goals is to personally add well-referenced content as well as positively encouraging others to do the same. Hopefully your students are having a good experience and gaining valuable work to becoming well-rounded editors. I added a couple '''Under Construction''' tags to ] and ] If you have other pages as part of the class assignment, it might be helpful for you to add that tag to them. Hopefully that will help other editors to avoid ] and work with your student editors in an effective manner per ]. Thanks again for your work and I hope they are enjoying the experience and we'll have a batch of young/eager editors who stick with the WP Community long after the project. Best Wishes! --] (]) 20:11, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

:Hi there. Have at it. But I noticed that the combination of templates in use there wasn't working, in that clicking on the links in the footnotes wasn't directing you to the bibliography.
:After a few experiments, I think that could be fixed merely by changing the "cite book" (etc.) templates to "citation." So the "harvnb" templates could be returned to the "sfn" ones. I have to admit I was unfamiliar with that template, but like its simplicity. I may use them in other articles I'm working on.
:Anyhow, as I say, I'm easy. But I simply noticed that the combination in use wasn't doing what was intended. --] (] • ]) 15:12, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
::Indeed in my early stages of editing on WP I used harv, but then I realized that SFN was created to improve upon harv and make citation work easier. I'll check to see what works & what doesn't. Thanks for your efforts. - ] (]) 15:19, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

Would you mind checking the deleted en.wiki page of this image (it was moved to Commons). The indicates it was uploaded twice (i.e. changed) and I'm curious to know what changed and whether the en.wiki version had any additional information (it's a replacement in a FAC that's had image problems; this image has some wrinkles and, although I don't believe them "fatal" or even intend to bring them up, I'm really hoping the change was a crop that dropped metadata). ] ] 12:35, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

::Hmmm. I'm not sure what I'm looking for, I'm afraid. But here goes... It was uploaded first in November 2006 with the following information. Cydebot later changed the license to <nowiki>{{self2|GFDL-with-disclaimers|cc-by-sa-2.5,2.0,1.0}}</nowiki>. It was copied to Commons in June of this year, and subsequently deleted. As for the image itself, it seems to have been uploaded twice the same day, with the same resolution (400×547) but with 82,477 bytes at first, 86,942 bytes subsequently. I have no idea about metadata, I'm afraid. Does this help? --] (] • ]) 13:17, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

What I really came here for ... regarding the Ottava Rima situation. Ceoil will be a bit strapped by two factors: 1) he's not an admin, and 2) there is already a lot of potential for other editors to engage in baiting Ottava Rima (he seems to attract the type that can't let go). I'm afraid Ceoil won't be able to be effective unless an admin works with him/them. The way I've seen mentorship work before is that the mentoring admin can keep others from baiting the target by holding the power of the short block over the mentee in the event s/he gets out of line. Without that, I'm afraid other admins will be tempted to block for every perceived infraction. ] (]) 13:10, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi - thanks for your sterling work in cleaning up the formatting and appearance of this article, not to mention in restoring some of the perfectly good stuff that I (in a fit of intolerance) cut. I have one quibble about a change you made. W/r/t Brian O'Nolan's assiduity or otherwise as a student, I am trying to find the word which will pin down his attitude; 'inattentive' seemed wrong as while I wanted to suggest that he didn't attend lectures very often, the word actually implies that he just didn't pay much attention. 'Inattentive' and 'careless' are therefore both wrong, but 'careless' is more true about his actual attitude, although it still isn't right. On reflection I think that 'negligent' is the right word, and will change it to that. I am trying to track down in the various volumes of O'Nolan's journalism a reasonably reliable quote from him about how little work he did. His MA thesis is said by A. Cronin to be 'pedestrian', although since Cronin made an elementary mistake in translating the title from the Irish I doubt that he has actually read it. ] (]) 22:52, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Hola colega: | |||
I'd like to impose an small experiment on you, if I may, as someone who has been involved with ]. How would you evaluate these images, both from active FACs?
*] | |||
*] | |||
You may, obviously, use pre-existing knowledge, but I'm really curious as to whether the dispatch has the information needed to properly evaluate these. ] ] 15:19, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
:Heh. OK. | |||
:*The McCain image. I don't know. Looking at the LoC site it says "No known restrictions on publication." I'm not sure that's good enough. You've said elsewhere that this is the LoC's "covering its ass" way of saying Public Domain. But it's not obvious, frankly.
:*The Beyoncé image. Again, I don't know. It does look self-made, mostly because of the fact that it features another audience member's head. ''However'' I suspect a concert promoter may have included some kind of contract that the public will not take pictures, as part of the price of admission.

At any rate, the article needs a complete rewrite, top to bottom, to avoid recentism, reflect the new sources, and replace Spanish-language sources with English when available. Not only do I not have time, I'm really troubled by the notion of an article being cleansed at the prodding of someone who works for a firm whose job is to do such things, so I hesitate to dive in here at all. Hi Jbmurray. Thanks for your copediting of the article; it is very much appreciated. I think he obtained them through his college/university (I guess not every one gives it out free-aren't you a professor at a university in British Columbia?) :OK. No problem. Yup, when I looked at the NYT article (I have to establish a virtual connection to the university server to do so when I'm at home, and then go through the library website, which is why I didn't check it immediately), I saw that it wasn't a re-translation, though there was an error in the transcription. It's always worth double-checking quotations. My question/comment was simply picking up on an inference from Ling.Nut. Sicilian Baroque nominated for Featured Article Review
I have nominated Sicilian Baroque for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets featured article criteria. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Delist" the article's featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. -- Beland (talk) 00:35, 29 January 2020 (UTC)
Proposed deletion of And a body to remember with
The article And a body to remember with has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Unsourced since 2009
While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. --Another Believer (Talk) 06:03, 6 February 2020 (UTC)
Class Editing
Hi JBmurray, I discovered another major lack of citations WP:YTCOPYRIGHT WP:RS issue with what appears to be another article being edited by your class. It’s admirable that you are taking on education on editing on Misplaced Pages, something that I believe more people should know how to do properly. Hopefully when finished with your class, the new users enjoyed the experience and continue to be active in the editor community! I removed a large section of Essay-style writing with no citations and sources despite close paraphrasing and/or quoting of books and options on Down These Mean Streets. Per WP:VER All quotations, and any material whose verifiability has been challenged or is likely to be challenged, must include an inline citation that directly supports the material. Any material that needs a source but does not have one may be removed. And WP:COPYVIO which calls for infringing content should be removed... I have RV’d the edit until the user can provide citations and references along the Misplaced Pages guidelines. Perhaps it would be helpful as their instructor to present a lesson on WP:VER, citations, references, WP:WHYCITE and similar subjects.--Bhockey10 (talk) 02:35, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
- Hi User:Bhockey10 and thanks for this. We will be talking about these issues tomorrow morning. For now, let me just say that these are works in progress. We have several weeks left with this project. Your comments on talk pages are most welcome. --jbmurray (talk • contribs) 07:13, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
- Hi JB, Thanks for your REs on the talk page. I added a couple Under Construction tags to Down These Mean Streets and Gregorio Cortez If you have other pages as part of the class assignment, it might be helpful for you to add that tag to them. Hopefully that will help other editors to avoid WP:BITE and work with your student editors in an effective manner per WP:ASSIGN. Thanks again for your work and I hope they are enjoying the experience and we'll have a batch of young/eager editors who stick with the WP Community long after the project. Best Wishes! --Bhockey10 (talk) 20:11, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
- Great, many thanks. Yes, absolutely I want my students to learn about adding well-referenced material, using reliable sources. The other article they are working on is The House on Mango Street. I generally avoid those "under construction" templates, but I may add one there, too. :) Thanks again. --jbmurray (talk • contribs) 20:28, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

I added a few bullets but didn't want to overwhelm them so stopped after a few sections. Looks like some good sources and useful material; the main thing at issue is encyclopedic voice. Pier Gerlofs Donia might be a decent model for them to follow: a folk hero, not yet a GA, but the voice is right -- no drama, just the facts. - I've completed a first pass. Can I assume that you've eyeballed the source quality and reliability yourself? I've noted one or two dubious sources in the review but you'll know better than I would whether the books cited are the right sort of scholarship. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 21:41, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
Citation style
I note that you changed the format of citation in the article on The Lady Vanishes. I also note at WP:CITEVAR it says: "Editors should not attempt to change an article's established citation style merely on the grounds of personal preference, to make it match other articles, or without first seeking consensus for the change." - kosboot (talk) 12:53, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
- Hi there. Have at it. But I noticed that the combination of templates in use there wasn't working, in that clicking on the links in the footnotes wasn't directing you to the bibliography.
- After a few experiments, I think that could be fixed merely by changing the "cite book" (etc.) templates to "citation." So the "harvnb" templates could be returned to the "sfn" ones. I have to admit I was unfamiliar with that template, but like its simplicity. I may use them in other articles I'm working on.
- Anyhow, as I say, I'm easy. But I simply noticed that the combination in use wasn't doing what was intended. --jbmurray (talk • contribs) 15:12, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
- Indeed in my early stages of editing on WP I used harv, but then I realized that SFN was created to improve upon harv and make citation work easier. I'll check to see what works & what doesn't. Thanks for your efforts. - kosboot (talk) 15:19, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

I need help to correct the nationality of Antoni Gaudí
Hola colega:
Por ejemplo: "Spanish architect from Catalonia" o "Catalan architect from Spain"?
--jbmurray (talk • contribs) 22:31, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users
Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Reminder to participate in Misplaced Pages research
Hello,
I recently invited you to take a survey about administration on Misplaced Pages. If you haven’t yet had a chance, there is still time to participate– we’d truly appreciate your feedback. The survey is anonymous and should take about 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement.
Take the survey here.
Kind Regards,
BGerdemann (WMF) (talk) 00:18, 13 November 2024 (UTC)
Administrators' newsletter – December 2024
News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2024).
Interface administrator changes
- Following an RFC, the policy on restoration of adminship has been updated. All former administrators may now only regain the tools following a request at the Misplaced Pages:Bureaucrats' noticeboard within 5 years of their most recent admin action. Previously this applied only to administrators deysopped for inactivity.
- Following a request for comment, a new speedy deletion criterion, T5, has been enacted. This applies to template subpages that are no longer used.
- Technical volunteers can now register for the 2025 Wikimedia Hackathon, which will take place in Istanbul, Turkey. Application for travel and accommodation scholarships is open from November 12 to December 10, 2024.
- The arbitration case Yasuke (formerly titled Backlash to diversity and inclusion) has been closed.
- An arbitration case titled Palestine-Israel articles 5 has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case will close on 14 December.

Administrators' newsletter – January 2025
News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2024).
- Following an RFC, Misplaced Pages:Notability (species) was adopted as a subject-specific notability guideline.
- A request for comment is open to discuss whether admins should be advised to warn users rather than issue no-warning blocks to those who have posted promotional content outside of article space.
- The Nuke feature also now provides links to the userpage of the user whose pages were deleted, and to the pages which were not selected for deletion, after page deletions are queued. This enables easier follow-up admin-actions.
- Following the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been elected to the Arbitration Committee: CaptainEek, Daniel, Elli, KrakatoaKatie, Liz, Primefac, ScottishFinnishRadish, Theleekycauldron, Worm That Turned.
- A New Pages Patrol backlog drive is happening in January 2025 to reduce the number of unreviewed articles and redirects in the new pages feed. Sign up here to participate!
