If you have time could you read over and comment on discussion? I think the policy needs to be revised. Hey - are you around? Well? If you are and have time ... I have proposed an addition to the Evolution article, which is now at the draft revision, for further work and discussion: Could you take a look at it and, if you think it is worthy, see if you have ideas for improving it so it can be moved into the actual article? Hi. I have reservations about using 'Afro-Trinidadian' to replace 'Trinidad and Tobago people of Black African descent' to name this category page as, 1, what differentiates an Afro-Trinidadian from an Indo-Trinidadian with people of mixed Black-Indian (which apparently half or more of all Trinidadians) appears to be (from looking at what is said at ]) how Black African-looking or how Desi-looking a person is and not the culture they have/subscribe to (their religion, food, dialect, other customs), and 2, that such a name is not suitable for describing both Trinidadians and Tobagonians together. The new name is bulkier, but straightforward in meaning. Still, of course, most notable Trinidadian's membership as either Afro-Trinidadian or Indo Trinidadian (or other), is not controversial and so I would support having ] and ] as sub-cats of 'Cat:T&T people of Black African descent' ] (]) 01:51, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

''Saludos'' to all, I present to you the new version of our project's Newsletter. It has been almost a year since the last edition, but rest assured that we haven't been lazy. Our Good Article count has raised by 11, while we have produced two Featured Lists and two Featured Articles. I will tweak the delivery format, from now on the Newsletter will be delivered per season. That means four anual editions, one for summer, fall, winter and spring. Speaking of summer, it has been a hot one, make sure to check out the project news below. I will also introduce a new section titled "Puerto Rican Highlight" where we will comment about positive accomplishments reached by Puerto Ricans and our representative organizations. - ] 01:17, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

== Wikimedians for Sustainable Development - December 2023 Newsletter ==

<div lang="en" dir="ltr" class="mw-content-ltr">This is our twenty-seventh newsletter, a sort of year-in-review for 2023.<div style="column-count:2; column-width: 400px;">

Dear Wikimedians for Sustainable Development,

As we bid farewell to 2023, we reflect on a year that has been an uneven year for our user group. While the journey has been marked by some truly inspiring events, most of our efforts have been largely uncoordinated and the user group hasn't been the support it could have been. Yet, there's a glimmer of hope and a world of potential for 2024.

'''Highlights of 2023:'''

;Newsletters Galore: We kicked off the year with zeal, sharing updates and inspiration through four newsletters. The number of things happening in the movement is astounding, but we need to rethink the format of the newsletter going into the next year.

;Growing Strong: The Wikimedians for Sustainable Development family welcomed 33 new members in 2023. Your passion and dedication continue to inspire us, and we look forward to nurturing this community spirit in the year ahead.

;Wikimania Talks: Our voices echoed far and wide at Wikimania, where several members of our community took the virtual stage to share insights and ideas about everything from Wikipedians-in-Residence's to open data. Your contributions showcased our commitment to sustainable development on a global scale.

;Content Creation Magic: Throughout the year, our extended community demonstrated incredible dedication to expanding the knowledge base on Misplaced Pages. Countless hours were spent creating and curating content that aligns with our mission, contributing to a more sustainable digital ecosystem.

;Campaigning hard: We saw a large variety of campaigns, from writing challenges to editathons. The willingness to experiment with new formats and partners, as well as learning from past efforts, shows great promise for the future.

'''Acknowledging Challenges:'''

While we celebrate these achievements, we acknowledge that 2023 presented its fair share of challenges. A lack of global coordination reminded us that the road to sustainable development is not always linear. However, it is precisely these challenges that fuel our determination to work together more cohesively in the coming year and proof that the user group is needed.

'''Hopeful Anticipation for 2024:'''

As we turn the page to 2024, let's carry forward the lessons learned and the successes celebrated. We are optimistic that, with renewed energy and a collective commitment, we will overcome obstacles and create an even more impactful and connected Wikimedians for Sustainable Development community.

Here's to a year of collaboration, growth, and making a lasting impact on the world through our shared passion for sustainability. Together, we can turn challenges into opportunities and pave the way for a brighter future.

Wishing you all a joyous holiday season and a Happy New Year!

Warm regards,
], ]

The fourth round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 29 August. Each of the 8 contestants who advanced to Round 4 scored at least 472 points, and the following contestants scored more than 700 points:

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether for a good article, featured content, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on ]. Remember to claim your points within 14 days of earning them, and importantly, before the deadline on 31 October.

== Invitation to participate in a research ==

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Misplaced Pages, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this ''''''.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its ] and view its ] .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

]

Thanks for the feedback. My message was meant to be in good spirit, but I deal with bullies every day (not saying Hesperian ''is'' a bully) and I know why people exhibit the kind of behaviour he was. It wasn't meant to inflame the situation, only to show how I felt and what things looked like from my end. You have to admit, everyone else in the discussion did not get as personal as Hesperian, and although I like his passion, it made me feel very stressed in a situation I expected to be pleasant - I still don't know what triggered his response, but as I said, I think it's just better we stay away from each other. I respect your judgement highly as you are a brilliant editor here, so if you have any other advice on the situation it would be really appreciated. : ) Cheers, ] (]) 04:50, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

:Wow, you really are such a great user - you're comments on Hesperian's talk were very helpful. I suggested taking the matter to a different forum or mediation, but Hesperian made fun of that. As it is, I hold no grudge against him. I think he's a brilliant user and editor and I hope we can friends so we can collaborate some day. :My only advice is to just do what you enjoy. Take light in the fact that you're not the only one who isn't thoroughly enjoying themselves on here - heck I left for months and came back and still find this place does stress you out. You're only on earth for a limited time and if you're not doing anything you enjoy, then you need to do something you do enjoy. I only came back because I realized I ''do'' enjoy writing articles, but if you're stressed out on here, then you should take a break until you feel that joy of wanting to be on here again. If you ever need to talk, then you've got a friend in me. : ) ] (]) 06:31, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

Hey Guettarda, ] is an interesting suggestion. I am throwing this up for discussion for a few of the more evolution-minded editors...Cheers, ] (] '''·''' ]) 01:16, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2025 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found ''']'''. If you have not yet signed up, you can ''']''' and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the ].
== Spines, or setae ==

For the 2025 WikiCup, we've implemented ] to the scoring system. The highest-ranking contestants will now receive ] at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are now open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants will no longer be eliminated at the end of each round.
Thanks for the greet. I have a year 1632 edition of ''the Anatomy of Melancholy'' which has the best “spine” of any book I have ever seen (looks like that Gaudi staircase, and 400 year old leather treated with hundreds of years of oil from human hands is always nice, but this is special). More seriously, I assume you are using spine, thorn, prickle, etc. colloquially and thus interchangeably. 1. I am currently in Los Angeles, and the spines (sharp processes) on the fruit of ] (nice roots, too), when the fruit is dried before dehiscing, cause an eerie musical sound reminiscent of Xenakis’ Electroacoustic music from the early 1960’s. It grows in the interesting chaparral ecosystem, which required fire every few decades or so to survive. 2. Last year I hired a young biology student at Caltech to go over to the desert garden at Huntington and pluck the spines of each cactus (or thorny plant) to determine which had the best musical sound for making a sound sculpture there, and he came up with the same cacti I already chose, ] sp. with hooked spines, and ]. 3. I paid in advance to participate in a botanical expedition of ] last fall, but my mother had cancer, was hospitalized a couple of days before I was to leave, and died last May. 4. I was dating a woman last year who had recently returned from the spiny forest in Madagascar! That is where I recommend you check for spines. ] (]) 22:52, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
: A bit more on local spines... Of course ] is local here (never touch the fruit!, and the spine of the various ] chollas has a sheath that comes off in your skin), but ] and ] have got to be the worst, for spines, and for illustrating an interesting feature of the local ecosystem. In mature ], there are spiny woody plants like ], but if there is a fire, most of the ], which are herbaceous and only grow for a year or two after a fire before being drowned in woody competitors, are spiny. If not for fires, they would go extinct, and the one year of life, out of every thirty to hundred years, cycle means that if they get eaten before seeding, they are extinct, explaining the spines. Oh, yeah, the ] propogates when the spine gets caught in large mammals, whence the jointed branch breaks off and transports the plant segment to a new location to start a new colony. ] (]) 23:03, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

::::If you can be bothered with the background, ] shows your argumentative friend waving that accusation about as a get out of jail free card. The site for disgruntled banned users has certainly spread anti-admin gossip, and there was also rather a flap just a year ago when over-twitchy treatment of what looked very much like yet another pro-ID troll was escalated into making an example of the admin concerned, and desysopping of a very productive editor for not treating the apparent troll as a potential contributor to be cherished. A major part of that case was the assertion that admins shouldn't use the tools for behaviour on an article they'd once edited sometime in the past, even though they weren't part of the current dispute. Wikimedians for Sustainable Development - December 2023 Newsletter

This is our twenty-seventh newsletter, a sort of year-in-review for 2023.

    Highlights of 2023:

    Newsletters Galore
We kicked off the year with zeal, sharing updates and inspiration through four newsletters. The number of things happening in the movement is astounding, but we need to rethink the format of the newsletter going into the next year.
    Growing Strong
The Wikimedians for Sustainable Development family welcomed 33 new members in 2023. Your passion and dedication continue to inspire us, and we look forward to nurturing this community spirit in the year ahead.
    Wikimania Talks
Our voices echoed far and wide at Wikimania, where several members of our community took the virtual stage to share insights and ideas about everything from Wikipedians-in-Residence's to open data. Your contributions showcased our commitment to sustainable development on a global scale.
    Content Creation Magic
Throughout the year, our extended community demonstrated incredible dedication to expanding the knowledge base on Misplaced Pages. Countless hours were spent creating and curating content that aligns with our mission, contributing to a more sustainable digital ecosystem.
    Campaigning hard
We saw a large variety of campaigns, from writing challenges to editathons. The willingness to experiment with new formats and partners, as well as learning from past efforts, shows great promise for the future.

    Acknowledging Challenges:

While we celebrate these achievements, we acknowledge that 2023 presented its fair share of challenges. A lack of global coordination reminded us that the road to sustainable development is not always linear. However, it is precisely these challenges that fuel our determination to work together more cohesively in the coming year and proof that the user group is needed.

    Hopeful Anticipation for 2024:

As we turn the page to 2024, let's carry forward the lessons learned and the successes celebrated. We are optimistic that, with renewed energy and a collective commitment, we will overcome obstacles and create an even more impactful and connected Wikimedians for Sustainable Development community.

Here's to a year of collaboration, growth, and making a lasting impact on the world through our shared passion for sustainability. Together, we can turn challenges into opportunities and pave the way for a brighter future.

Wishing you all a joyous holiday season and a Happy New Year!

    Warm regards, User:Ainali, User:Daniel Mietchen

PS. We have started writing our yearly report, please add your activities to it.

    WikiCup 2024 February newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Misplaced Pages talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Hi there, Guettarda. You and your WikiEdu colleagues might be interested in the recent paper "Misplaced Pages and the Outsider Within: Black Feminism and Social Inequality in Knowledge Sharing" and the related discussion on the Women in Red talkpage.--Ipigott (talk) 15:26, 27 February 2024 (UTC)

Thanks Ipigott. Tracy let us know about the article when it was published; we've supported her classes for a long time, and she's great. I wasn't aware of the discussion at WiR, and I will make sure that my colleagues are aware of it. Guettarda (talk) 02:33, 19 March 2024 (UTC)

    WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Misplaced Pages talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

Invitation to participate in a research

    Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Misplaced Pages, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

    Kind Regards,

    WMF Research Team

    WikiCup 2024 November newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round being a very tight race. Our new champion is AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who scored 2,283 points mainly through 3 high-multiplier FAs and 3 GAs on military history topics. By a 1% margin, Airship beat out last year's champion, Delaware BeanieFan11 (submissions), who scored second with 2,264 points, mainly from an impressive 58 GAs about athletes. In third place, Generalissima (submissions) scored 1,528 points, primarily from two FAs on U.S. Librarians of Congress and 20 GAs about various historical topics. Our other finalists are: Sammi Brie (submissions) with 879 points, Canada Hey man im josh (submissions) with 533 points, BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 432 points, Arconning (submissions) with 244 points, and Christmas Island AryKun (submissions) with 15 points. Congratulations to our finalists and all who participated!

The final round was very productive, and contestants had 7 FAs, 9 FLs, 94 GAs, 73 FAC reviews, and 79 GAN reviews and peer reviews. Altogether, Misplaced Pages has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2025 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement!

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

    Welcome to the 2025 WikiCup!

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2025 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page.

For the 2025 WikiCup, we've implemented several changes to the scoring system. The highest-ranking contestants will now receive tournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are now open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants will no longer be eliminated at the end of each round.

The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), Frostly (talk · contribs · email), Guerillero (talk · contribs · email) and Lee Vilenski (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. • The Nuke feature also now provides links to the userpage of the user whose pages were deleted, and to the pages which were not selected for deletion, after page deletions are queued. This enables easier follow-up admin-actions.
