Take a less proactive approach (as I said, follow ] guidelines - declare your interest, and let others decide the suitability) and the edits are a lot more likely to stay.

By the way: it's considered poor etiquette to mark edits as minor unless they're at a level no-one could reasonably object to (e.g. correction of obvious spelling mistakes). == References to www.kirasalak.com ==

I'm replacing the links to the www.kirasalk.com with links to National Geographic everywhere since we don't usually reference content in personal webspace (it is hard to verify that the information is authentic). Note that I'm not deleting any references, even where they support historical assertions for which I think the articles are an inappropriate reference. I am, however, deleting references that point to the photo section of the kirasalak website. BTW, I think you can contribute to the website whether or not you have a COI. The key is to contribute within the parameters that we have in wikipedia and those parameters are fairly commonsensical: promotional stuff is not appreciated, references should be to reliable and independent sources, and the prose should be straightforward.

Look at it like this. When you first started posting stuff about Kira Salak, I assumed that this was just another publicity exercise (because of the large scale insertion of links to kirasalak.com) over some non-notable person, which it may or may not have been. However, now that I've read some of the stuff you've inserted, I can see that she is quite a lady and is reasonably notable (if Pico Iyer talks about her, she's gotta be notable!). Tone down the prose, don't promote the books or the website, and you'll find this a rewarding exercise. My reading of Ms. Salak is that she'll do quite well by herself without having to resort to hagiographic descriptions of her work and life. --] <small>(])</small> 17:20, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

Welcome

Welcome!

Hello, JakeSturm, and welcome to Misplaced Pages! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on discussion pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Misplaced Pages:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{helpme}} before the question. Again, welcome!

Your Edit to Mali

Hi, I would appreciate if you would not insert material which is not relevant to Mali, such as an Amazon book. Misplaced Pages is not a place to advertise your book. Thanks. miranda 18:17, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

Your recent edits

Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Misplaced Pages pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. If you can't type the tilde character, you should click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you! --SineBot (talk) 19:06, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

Bhutan

Hi. I moved your response over to the Talk:Bhutan page so that others could see it as well. Hope that's ok with you. Regards. --Regents Park (sink with my stocks) 03:01, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

(I also popped in a welcome message above - since no one has done it as yet. Welcome! --Regents Park (sink with my stocks) 03:02, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Thanks!

Thank you for the welcome message, added latest comment to Bhutan article. Didn't notice the signature mark, will include that in the future.

Third opinion

Hi!

You recently added a listing to WP:Third opinion regarding a dispute you are having with another editor. This listing has been removed (not by me, though I was on my way to remove it).

I'm not convinced that that WP:3O is the best place to deal with your dispute; WP:3O is really for disputes on one article, and it sounds like your dispute spans several articles?

If you haven't already, you should try discussing the matter with the other editor on their talk page.

If you've tried that, then you could maybe try Misplaced Pages:Wikiquette alerts or Misplaced Pages:Requests for comment. You might also want to have a look at Misplaced Pages:Dispute resolution to see if there are other avenues you could try. I should stress, though, that you should make every effort to try and resolve this with the other editor first.

Good luck, and feel free to talk to me if you need advice or impartial assistance.

Cheers, This flag once was reddeeds 22:34, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

Re: Your post to Wikiquette alerts

When adding references to articles, you should be citing specifically the information being referenced from the source. For books, this would include adding page numbers to the pages referenced. Also, when adding books, we don't link them to sales pages, like Amazon.com. Doing such is inappropriate advertising. Including the ISBN will allow readers to locate the book themselves. General references should be avoided. Although you may think one book is a good source of information for a given topic, others may have the same opinion about other books. It would be unreasonable to have reader's favorite books listed as "references" just because they enjoyed reading them. Additionally, linking to someone's website is not an appropriate source unless it meets the requirements of a reliable source and is being used to reference specific information. Otherwise, it is just spamming. لennavecia 17:57, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

Conflict of interest

Re the Wikiquette alert, there appears to be a conflict of interest issue too. I've raised it at WP:COIN#Kira Salak. Standard advice below. Gordonofcartoon (talk) 19:28, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

If you have a close connection to some of the people, places or things you have written about on Misplaced Pages, you may have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Misplaced Pages's neutral point of view policy, edits where there is a conflict of interest, or where such a conflict might reasonably be inferred from the tone of the edit and the proximity of the editor to the subject, are strongly discouraged. If you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid or exercise great caution when:

  1. editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with;
  2. participating in deletion discussions about articles related to your organization or its competitors;
  3. linking to the Misplaced Pages article or website of your organization in other articles (see Misplaced Pages:Spam); and,
  4. avoid breaching relevant policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.

For information on how to contribute to Misplaced Pages when you have conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for businesses. For more details about what, exactly, constitutes a conflict of interest, please see our conflict of interest guidelines. Thank you. Gordonofcartoon (talk) 19:28, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

Copyright violation in Four Corners: A Journey into the Heart of Papua New Guinea

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Four Corners: A Journey into the Heart of Papua New Guinea, by another Misplaced Pages user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Four Corners: A Journey into the Heart of Papua New Guinea is unquestionably copyright infringement, and no assertion of permission has been made.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Four Corners: A Journey into the Heart of Papua New Guinea, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Orphaned non-free media (Image:WhiteMary.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:WhiteMary.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Misplaced Pages under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Misplaced Pages. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Misplaced Pages (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Misplaced Pages page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:21, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
