Professionally, Shefman has a long history in human rights in Canada. From 1980 to 1988 he was the national director of the League for Human Rights of ]. In 1988, he took the position of director of communications and education for the ]. In 1994 he left the commission to start his own human rights consulting firm.

From 1997 to 2000, he was a Trustee for the ] Board. From ] until ], he was a member of the ] Board of Governors.
