Hey, I noted that in various abortion articles, Joel Brind is referred to just as "Dr. Brind". I changed it in one article but noted it in others, and you seem to be careful, so I'm wondering why only the first-name reference? I could understand doing the "Dr X" formulation with respect to just authors of studies, but since his general contribution seems to be greater than that (e.g., he's not just a random researcher but a pretty activie participant in the debate) I think he deserves his full name. Hi Roy, I do have a point, and it's blindingly obvious! I tried to just change it so it was in line with the convention for the previous three periods, simply saying "US Colonial Period" but it got changed back, as for some reason the naming conventions magically changed the moment the first US boots hit the shores of Saipan. I would say unless you have a document showing that the people of Saipan invited the US in, then it's a colony regardless. <small class="autosigned">—&nbsp;Preceding ] comment added by ] (]) 08:21, 3 March 2015 (UTC)</small><!-- Template:Unsigned IP --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

== Congrats on RfA + a Few comments on ] == == A new user right for New Page Patrollers ==

Hi {{BASEPAGENAME}}.
Congrats on your RfA -You earned it by being a good neighbor and cleaning up our messes on occasion, for example in keeping an eye on the Schiavo page where I regularly edit.

A new user group, ], has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at ]. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.
In any case, I was just browsing around, and I saw on your user page where you say:

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available ] but very often a friendly custom message works best.
"Here are some of the users I've met so far that have shared some WikiLove: ... Alterego - Became my arch-nemesis when he eloquently argued to keep Jesus on the List_of_self-proclaimed_deities to keep everyone happy... even if Jesus may not have considered himself a deity."

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at ]. <small>''(Sent to all admins)''</small>.] (]) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)
While I do not know the reasoning or arguments or logic AlterEgo used (in the event that i accidentally copy it), I would like to point out at least this one set of three verses of the Bible in which Jesus apparently ''does'' claim to be deity:

== Admin nom. ==

Thanks, I really appreciate it, but I was ] only a month ago. They apparently thought that I spent too much time in the article space and not enough in the talk and project space. I was doing a lot of reversion even before that, but since then I have tried to participate in RfA, AfD and other project related stuff. I was thinking of not re-applying until December at the earliest. It's funny, after participating in RfA for a while now, how standards change a lot based on who is participating at any given time. I am also going to re-think my answers, some felt that I wasn't verbiose enough with my answers. Again '''thanks a lot for the offer''', but could I contact you in a couple of months, and if you still feel so inclined, nom me then?

A couple of points for you to consider. If you look at the last block - which was for 2 days, the vandal stayed away for quite a bit longer. It's perfectly possible that a 15 min block will have the same net effect as a week long one. Also check the edit history. There are some good edits there as well as some vandalism ones. The IP resolves to the Humanities & Science Institute in Arizona. Presumably this institute has hundreds of students, of which one is a vandal, and probably one other is potential collaterial damage.

Hello,
Simple vandalism is annoying but pretty easy to correct. It's best to keep responses to it measured. Having said that it doesn't actually matter in this case because you haven't really reblocked him for a week. Well i don't think so anyway. When two blocks are in operation on the same IP the IP will be unblocked as soon as the shorter block expires. In order to extend a block, you therefore need to unblock the IP then reblock for the longer time period. But i don't think it is necessary in this case. If he comes back tomorrow, we can reblock him then. ] ] 22:31, 3 November 2005 (UTC)

Abortion: "Art, literature and film"

Since going back in the history files I see that you were the one who created this section of the abortion article, I thought I'd make sure that you know (what you probably already know) that it was recently removed from the article. There was a discussion about it on the article's Talk page at "Anne Sexton/Don't be buffaloed." KatieHepPal (talk) 19:49, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Abortion

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Abortion you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of AlanZhu314159265358979 -- AlanZhu314159265358979 (talk) 06:20, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

Saipan Colonial Period Names

Dear RoyBoy, please consider:

The period when Saipan was controlled by the Spanish is called the Spanish colonial period. The period when Saipan was controlled by the Germans is called the German colonial period. The period when Saipan was controlled by the Japanese is called the Japanese colonial period.

but...

The period when Saipan was controlled by the US is NOT called the US colonial period.

Is uniformity of descriptions not a goal of Misplaced Pages? Is Misplaced Pages aiming at truth, or simply a mouthpiece for the colonial masters?

Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.155.205.54 (talk) 05:35, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

You may have a point, but you made it very poorly by making a header in Saipan very long and argumentative. A heading in an encyclopedia shouldn't contain a question. Do you have any sources that call it "US colonialism", is there evidence that this was done against the will of the population? - RoyBoy 00:12, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

— Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.155.205.54 (talk) 08:21, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

As a US "commonwealth" it's defined as "self-governing under a constitution of its adoption and whose right of self-government will not be unilaterally withdrawn by Congress". If it isn't a colony, then calling it colonialism sounds inaccurate and inflammatory. You need reliable sources to support a minority view, not an informal fallacy trying to shift the burden of evidence. - RoyBoy 01:34, 8 March 2015 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Abortion

The article Abortion you nominated as a good article has failed ; see Talk:Abortion for reasons why the nomination failed. If or when these points have been taken care of, you may apply for a new nomination of the article. Proposed deletion of Self Decay

The article Self Decay has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable local band.

While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Your contributed article, Marine Science

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, Marine Science. First, thank you for your contribution; Misplaced Pages relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – Marine science. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Misplaced Pages. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Marine science – you might like to discuss new information at the article's talk page.

If you think the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Misplaced Pages looks forward to your future contributions. Mr RD 19:20, 8 February 2016 (UTC)

Extended confirmed protection

Hello, RoyBoy. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Misplaced Pages:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:49, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi RoyBoy.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Chemical Galaxy

A tag has been placed on Chemical Galaxy requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done for the following reason:

Unremarkable book - author's article was just deleted for lack of notability.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, pages that meet certain criteria may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Proposed deletion of Chemical Galaxy

The article Chemical Galaxy has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable book. The article on the author has already been deleted due to lack of notability.

While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ArbCom 2019 special circular

Icon of a white exclamation mark within a black triangle
Administrators must secure their accounts

The Arbitration Committee may require a new RfA if your account is compromised.

View additional information

Why have I received this message?
All administrators are receiving it.
What prompted you to send this message?
Recently, several Misplaced Pages admin accounts were compromised. The admin accounts were desysopped on an emergency basis. In the past, the Committee often resysopped admin accounts as a matter of course once the admin was back in control of their account. The committee has updated its guidelines. Admins may now be required to undergo a fresh Request for Adminship (RfA) after losing control of their account.
What do I need to do?
Only to follow the instructions in this message.
  1. Check that your password is unique (not reused across sites).
  2. Check that your password is strong (not simple or guessable).
  3. Enable Two-factor authentication (2FA), if you can, to create a second hurdle for attackers.
How can I find out more about two-factor authentication (2FA)?
You can find out more about 2FA at m:2FA.

This message was sent to all administrators following a recent motion. Thank you for your attention. For the Arbitration Committee, Cameron11598 02:23, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

Information icon Established policy provides for removal of the administrative permissions of users who have not made any edits or logged actions in the preceding twelve months. Because you have been inactive, your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to activity within the next month.

Inactive administrators are encouraged to rejoin the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Resources and support for reengaging with the project are available at Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Editor Retention/administrators. If you do not intend to rejoin the project in the foreseeable future, please consider voluntarily resigning your administrative permissions by making a request at the bureaucrats' noticeboard.

Thank you for your past contributions to the project. — JJMC89 bot 00:06, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Proposed deletion of Anderson Water Systems

Notice

The article Anderson Water Systems has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Article is written like the "about us" on a company website. I can find no significant coverage in reliable sources. An IP added a claim that the company is now SUEZ Water Technologies & Solutions, but I can't find RS to back that up; SUEZ Water Technologies & Solutions doesn't mention Anderson on its own site. I would BLAR to Degrémont, which I can verify it became part of; but it's not discussed in any depth there.

-- Tamzin (she/they) 01:45, 17 January 2022 (UTC)

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Monsanto

You made a redirect, Controlling our food, about 15 years ago, and it now points to a section that no longer exists. Do you want to take a look at it? WhatamIdoing (talk) 20:23, 12 March 2023 (UTC)

Thanks, updated to less specific destination. You sound familiar... wow its been a while! Scanning user page; we match on Tobacco smoke and DST: my concern mental health. Windows, interesting stance, my guess more flexible, collaborative and distracting. Similar to why Android leads mobile, pricing is a factor but perhaps that dovetails into centralized vs decentralized control. I watch too much TV, while it would be more productive to redirect that time back to Misplaced Pages... alas the work fades into mediocrity. RoyBoy 17:20, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
I find that it's still fun to add content, especially if I see some obscure detail in the news and wonder whether Misplaced Pages has an article on it yet. WhatamIdoing (talk) 21:01, 10 June 2023 (UTC)

Invitation to participate in a research

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Misplaced Pages, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team
