'''Alan Shefman''' is currently the ]lor for Ward 5 in the ], ], Canada. He was elected to this position in a by-election in ] following the resignation of ] upon her election to the ] Previously, from 2000 to 2004, he served as a school trustee of the ].

Professionally, Shefman has a long history in human rights in Canada. From 1980 to 1988 he was the national director of the League for Human Rights of ]. While serving in this position, Shefman was called upon to advise the Crown Prosecutor in the Alberta hate crimes trial of ]. In 1988, he took the position of director of communications and education for the ]. In 1994 he left the commission to start his own human rights consulting firm.

From 1997 to 2000, he was a Trustee for the ] Board. Shefman has a long history of involvement with York University. From ] until ], he was a member of the ] Board of Governors. Prior to that he served as President of the York University Alumni Association. Currently he is a fellow of McLaughan College and an Associate of the York University Centre for Practical Ethics.
