Many notable and historic figures have conducted multiple simultaneous relationships that nevertheless would ''not'' be considered "polyamorous" because of the absence of "full knowledge and consent." In ], for instance, the difficulty and stigma of ] often left a rich man's wife little choice but to tolerate his ], who themselves might be dependent on him for financial support. Such relationships are not included in this list.

Because of the difficulty in distinguishing between romantic historic relationships and sexual relationships between friends, this list takes a broad construction of "]" that includes the latter. For more specific information, see individual pages and the external references.
