Also scrambled password. Misplaced Pages, it was fun while it lasted. No sense of community here anymore (unless, of course, by "community" we mean AFD and MFD, but that's not something I want to be part of). I regret saying that I wish I hadn't formed ]. It's a necessary evil. I guess where I was going with this was that I feel that to be part of ] has almost become greater than editing articles on Misplaced Pages! ::::Regretfully, it really is my intention to leave and never come back. It probably will let me reassess what is most important in my life though, so that's a good thing. I do feel very sad that I'm leaving behind so many great editors. We've all been through so much and weathered so much criticism (which we almost always tried to take into consideration) that it's like leaving behind a family. But... this is an online project. It's ''not'' family, though when I started it was one of the most encouraging, funny, nice, friendly web communities around. Sure there were trolls, some of them really bad, but even then Jimbo tried to inculcate a spirit of forgiveness. I can't remember who it was, but he got blocked for a year for disruption. We all thought that it would be forever, but Jimbo impressed me with a real attempt at allowing the editor back with some mediation and mentorship. I was impressed that Jimbo would take the time to do this, I never forgot what he did there (even if I forgot the editors name) - it really stuck in my mind. Unfortunately, things have changed. Funny. It's like the history of Christianity. Christianity started out great, then after Constantine decided that the Roman Empire should be Christian, people who didn't care about the core tenets of Christianity came in seeking power and started corrupting it. It's similar to what I see happening here. Of course Misplaced Pages is full of heathens, so the comparison probably isn't valid... <joke>. So I wish it weren't so, but it's time to move on. Soon I'll not add anything more to this page (yes, it will take a little time to get this out of my system), but it will happen. Give me time - I've been on the Wikicrack for 5 years now, going cold turkey is almost impossible! Now to work out what I'm going to spend all my free time on... think I'll go learn about Oracle Databases. - ] (]) 13:38, 18 November 2007 (UTC)
:::Replied on my ]. You know, people around here really, honestly seem to care for you and hold you in high esteem, even if I don't. So why let one mean-spirited jerk-off get under your skin? ::::What I wrote on The Fat Man Who Never Came Back's user talk page.
:::::In case you hadn't noticed, there are a few things about this project that were always important.
:::::# Don't troll others, and don't be nasty to them. If your humour was designed to hurt another, don't do it. The humour on Misplaced Pages is meant to be gentle, not harsh. Hard humour designed to bring down another is not conducive to editing on this project, nor collaboration. There is enough conflict without someone's lack of regard for another to cause more hurt and pain.
:::::# I am perfectly able to keep my real life separate from the editing I do on this project. Like I said, things in my normal life are great, except for a bit of sickness I've had for a few days. Yeah, it's a bit stressful, but that's what happens when your wife is pregnant and money is tight with a new-born on the way. However, this doesn't mean that I'm not extremely sad that this project has turned into a horrible blame-fest, with no way of people to make mistakes, or to speak their mind, or to leave without someone leaving a nasty comment on their user talk page. I've been on this project for almost 5 years, and you are one of the very few that I've seen who left a "don't let the door hit you on the arse" style comment. Mostly when someone leaves from disappointment, other editors refrain from commenting, or at the very least note what they didn't like in a very short comment (as in "I didn't agree with that you did such-and-such") and don't make a personal comment designed to be hurtful.
:::::# I have no intention of returning to editing. Like I said, I scrambled my account. I'm only coming back to respond to comments like the ones you left me. I certainly didn't expect for people to be horrible to me on my talk page, or to accuse me of having a sock-puppet when I log in and edit anonymously (?!?).
:::::# I have contributed quite a bit to this project (for instance, I spent two years writing the ] article), and have tried to make sure that I never misused admin tools. I think that is why long-time, valuable contributors aren't particularly happy I'm leaving. I feel sorry for those in the trenches. Unfortunately, many feel the way I do and are deeply saddened that the old spirit of forgiveness, Wikilove and community is being eroded by those who only want to do meta-editing, vandal hunting and casting judgement on others. There is certainly more of that now on Misplaced Pages than there is of actual quality editing of Misplaced Pages articles. It also means a lot less recognition for those who do the bulk of the work in getting topics and articles up to speed in terms of quality. I definitely encourage any editor to remember the core goal of Misplaced Pages, which is to contribute the sum total of all knowledge. I do know that writing nasty comments on talk pages doesn't help that at all, all it does is make more good contributors leave. It does allow more people in who only want to be involved in making decisions for the project but who don't really care about editing articles.
:::::So before you decide to post a "witty" comment on someone else's talk page, think about whether it's there to judge them and bring them down, or whether you really want them to stay and produce good contributions for Misplaced Pages. - ] (]) 13:24, 18 November 2007 (UTC)
::::::Wow, I really, really hurt your feelings; sorry for that. Perhaps I overreacted to the distasteful way you've behaved over the past few days; I really expect long-time editors and admins to be exemplars, but when they fuck up, that's no excuse for me to be mean. I wasn't saying anything close to "don't let the door hit you on the way out," nor did I ever suggest that my comment was particularly witty. I was merely alerting others who were mourning your departure that you never actually left; however, when I re-read my comment it sounded awfully mean-spirited, which is one of several reasons I deleted it (only for you to restore it). Yes, I'm unfamiliar with the scale and quality of your magisterial contributions--and I never claimed to be your equal in experience or utility to the project--but you're none too familiar with my behavior as an editor, either. I do have a good idea what Misplaced Pages's all about and don't need to be lectured via enumerated do's and dont's by someone I don't really look up to or care to emulate. Nobody's perfect, and we've both had our ill-advised moments; my humor can be inappropriate or dark, but if you really look at my interactions with other editors, you'll find that I get along great with a wide assortment of people; I'm sweet, patient and helpful more often than not. I meant it when I said not to let let one online jerk-off effect your mood. It's not worth it. If you truly see me as nothing but a troll, you should really stop feeding me. Please go in peace.--] (]) 14:22, 18 November 2007 (UTC)
:::::::You know, I've often written comments on people's pages that I regret later. It takes a big man (really, no pun intended here!) to say what you just said, and I appreciate it. The more Wikilove, the better. I didn't really see you as a troll, but your comment ''did'' upset me. But... the comment above does make things right. I very much appreciate you saying it, and no more hard feelings on my end anymore. I hope that any bad feelings that I've caused could be forgiven on your end also. It's been a tough WikiWeek for me.
:::::::It is tough for me to leave. I have done a lot of stuff on this project... I guess I only said this because I was justifying my existence here to you and I wanted you to know how very much I regret the way things have turned out. It's an awfully hard thing to do to leave Misplaced Pages, I ], left for 6 months and came back again. This time it's not really viable to do so, things have changed a lot from the first time. That's why this time I have scrambled my account so I can't get back in. - ] (]) 14:42, 18 November 2007 (UTC)
I feel your pain. I also miss the old sense of community, common purpose, and shared values. Knowing that the current fragmentation is inevitable doesn't make it easier to watch. I mostly keep my head down and my eye on my watchlist, not on the drama. I hope you do come back eventually, as your presence will be missed, at least among those who are familiar with your intelligence and wit. Go, relax, invent a cocktail called "the exploding whale", and come back when you're ready to face some small corner of the maelstrom again. Cheers! — ]\] 08:03, 18 November 2007 (UTC)
:Thanks Catherine. I shall certainly consider making that cocktail: I wonder whether it would be OR to add it to ] article? Keep up the good work, btw. I totally think you are a great editor, wish there were more of you about! - ] (]) 13:49, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi Ta bu,

I'm sad to see you go, but it's probably for the best. If anybody edits wikipedia because they feel they "have to" or absolutely "need to" rather than because they want to, then that'd be a problem.

I think as time goes on, the temptation for people to vandalise or POV-push on wikipedia will decline. The lack of such problems may make wikipedia a less paranoid place (or maybe more paranoid - but I hope not!).

Best of luck, ] (]) 14:32, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

http://meta.wikimedia.org/Wikimedia_Australia/Draft_Rules_for_Wikimedia_Australia_Inc

Details of the incorporation meeting, including local meetings (to be joined up by teleconferencing, with any luck) and the agenda, can be found here:

In particular, you are invited to attend the Melbourne meeting:

* Time: 3pm
* Date: Sunday 20th April 2008
* Location: Computerbank, North Melbourne
* RSVP (optional): at http://meta.wikimedia.org/Wikimedia_Australia/Incorporation/Melbourne or http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=12283635078

I also encourage you to take part in discussion on the mailing list:
https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/Wikimediaau-l

If you are unable to attend, you can vote by proxy. Please copy the proxy form at http://meta.wikimedia.org/Wikimedia_Australia/Proxy_form and send it to me in an email. (It is better to appoint a generic member, e.g. "Meeting Chair" or "Acting Secretary", both of whom will be of Melbourne, rather than a specific member, but the choice is yours.)

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Yours sincerely,
Brianna Laugher
Provisional Secretary, Wikimedia Australia

== G'day ==

G'day esteemed person who has expressed interest in Sydney based meetups at ] (I hope that's the correct wording for the formal greeting!!). You may have heard that Australia is to have its very own 'chapter' of the Wikimedia Foundation - and further, there's a meeting coming up to discuss / enact the chapter's incorporation (details ). I'm afraid that I don't know too much about the details of what this entails, other than having a private hope that we might get a secret handshake, and maybe cheap coffee at wikimania (this is a poor attempt at humour - I'm sure that the Chapter's do great work, and it's a good thing that Australia is to have one).

If you're interested in meeting up this weekend (the set date is the 20th) - or later, then please do ] and sign up, or make a comment at the talk page... the drive to create the chapter has largely come from another town in Australia that I'm afraid I haven't actually heard much about.. and anything they can do.... right? - cheers, ] (]) 11:11, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

== Drinks and a wiki chat? ==

G'day sydneysider - fancy a 'not quite a meetup but a few drinks' sort of thing? - We can chat about the new aussie chapter, the price of eggs and have our very own 2020 Wiki Summit! - or just sink a couple of cold ones and gass bag about the good 'ol days of wiki, when an editor could get some repsect (not a typo)! I've suggested something ] so take a look and sign up if you're up for it... cheers, ] (]) 02:27, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
