Hi! You recently added a quote by Mark Manasse to ]. That quote contains a malapropism: the word "insure" is used where "ensure" would be correct. Greetings, Pcap
Dear Pohta, you seem to have a specific mathematical or type theory in mind, where "unit type" is a well-known concept. However, in most computing contexts, that theory is neither well-known nor needed. The term "unit type" is meaningless to most readers; whereas most readers (even the theorists) will surely understand what is meant by the key being void.<br/>Without reference to a specific language or theory, "void type" and "unit type" are two names for the same context. The assertion that "void cannot be stored" may be true in some programming languages, but it is only a trivial and arbitrary compiler restriction, not a logical impossibility. On the other hand, in most prgramming languages one cannot even declare a variable or field as being of "unit type". In summary: "void" is not a bit less correct or precise than "unit type", but is much more accessible to readers. All the best, --] (]) 21:06, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
How do you do? | |||
::P.S. The section on ] where you "clarify" the difference between "void type" and "unit type" is mixing up (a specific) abstract type theory with the type systems of specific languages. As said above, the C restriction against allowing void types or variables is merely an arbitrary decision by language designers. The restriction could probably be lifted by simply removing the explicit test in the compiler. (By the way, while standard C may forbid an empty struct, GCC allows them, as in "typedef struct vac {} vac; vac U, V; U = V;".) All the best, --] (]) 21:33, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
I see that you are a level-headed Wikipedian who often participates in AfDs. The following AfD, which I started, is becoming a two-sided war that requires additional participants. I thought perhaps you might be able to help.
: If ] is meaningless, the reader can click on it and become educated. This is Misplaced Pages, not CS101 at some community college where all they teach is Java. Besides, it's not such a difficult concept; it's implemented in quite a few languages. As for "it is only a trivial and arbitrary compiler restriction, not a logical impossibility", you should know that void type is just an implementation hack that C-derived languages propagated (void is ''defined'' as empty in the ISO C standard); it's not a theoretical concept taught in a PL class or described in a PL book in more than a passing mention (Pierce has about 3 lines on it); the theoretical concept is unit type. ] ] 21:17, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
::Misplaced Pages is not a technical journal, it is an encyclopedia. The target reader is not the specialist, or the CS student who has taken a course in type theory; it is the general reader, who has not even taken CS101 in Java, and knows about programming only enough to want to know what "set" means in computing. Those readers (and even seasoned programmers) will hardly understand the definition given in the "unit type" article — and theyshould not be required to learn type theory in order to understand what a set data strcuture is. == Reattribution of edits ==
Usually, after a rename, the edits will be reattributed over a period of time, often several days for accounts with a lengthy editing history. The developers have designed the process to operate slowly since it is resource intensive. There were problems with reattribution causing site outages or failing altogether before this throttling was in place.
Rarely, the reattribution process will not complete due to bugs in MediaWiki, and will leave the contributions split between the old and new accounts. The bureaucrats have no control over this and no means to restart the process if it is stalled.

Maybe a little more polite note next time, than "Please be more discerning with your linking", or perhaps edit the article so that it follows Misplaced Pages's ] by ''italicizing'' ALL book titles, which would prevent the problem. We even have ] for those who are unable to properly format a citation. Really, three different citation style in one article for only three citations is even bad by Misplaced Pages standards. ] (]) 03:02, 5 September 2009 (UTC) |

You have placed a npov tag on the page Genocide of Ottoman Turks and Muslims without stating the reason for neutrality dispute, please use the article disucssion page to explain your reasons for tagging and allow for discussion. If you feel the tag is no longer valid it will be removed in time if no discussion is initiated. Hittit (talk) 18:38, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

This is to thank you
Hi, and thank you. I almost missed this (I wasn't logged on at the time), but I didn't want to miss the chance to say thanks. Not because of the ultimate approval, but especially because you seem to have glanced over the article itself, and because you have helped them select the hook. I know we can have our differences when it comes to other aspects of editing philosophy, but I still look forward to your critical eye (especially when you cut me some AGF slack). DYK check
Regarding your post on Hermogenes at T:TDYK: Thanks for checking! You don't need to do anything after you've approved the hook. It'll stay there until someone assembling a set takes the hook out to one of the places in the queue, unless someone finds a problem with the hook that you missed. Ucucha 14:09, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
Please participate in this AfD
Greetings, Pcap
How do you do?
I see that you are a level-headed Wikipedian who often participates in AfDs. The following AfD, which I started, is becoming a two-sided war that requires additional participants. I thought perhaps you might be able to help.
Just for the record, I'd like to state that I'm not inviting you to take my side; I simply wish a fair discussion in presence of more participants. So, if you think you must vote against me, please do it.
The discussion is: Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/Iranian sex tape scandal

DYK for IBM 608
On May 7, 2010, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article IBM 608, which you created or substantially expanded. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check ) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Request
Please see Misplaced Pages:Redirects for discussion/Log/2010 May 15 for a discussion of deleting the WP:PEDO redirect/shortcut that you had applied to Misplaced Pages:Pedophilia. I had removed the shortcut because the term "pedo" is highly inflammatory and insulting in many parts of the world, although I am happy to believe that you applied the shortcut in good faith; it's not an unreasonable redirect, simply one that could be used in an (intentionally or unintentionally) offensive way. Would you consider allowing it to be deleted under the CSD criteria {{db-self}} rather than going through the entire deletion discussion? Risker (talk) 01:06, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
- Fine with me tagging it with db-self, I hope some admin goes along because I did not actually create the shortcut. It was originally pointed to Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Pedophilia Article Watch; I only re-targeted it. Pcap ping 02:35, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you very much, Pcap. The editor who created it hasn't edited in two years, so there was little point going to him. Risker (talk) 03:57, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

Assistance request
I was wondering if you could tell if the sources that Tothwolf posted on the talk page of AXFS show notability. Joe Chill (talk) 12:26, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
- The reason why I nominated the article for AfD first before asking is because I noticed the sources too late. Joe Chill (talk) 12:29, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
- Your work on the article convinced me that it is notable. Thanks for assessing the references. Joe Chill (talk) 18:23, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for improving AXFS. You could probably see from the edit history what was going on back when I added the list of sources to the talk page. Unfortunately I've not had time to work on it since then. Could you also have a look at Green (programming language) when you have a chance? I'm not sure if much in the way will be found via Google since it is from 1977 though. --Tothwolf (talk) 04:54, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
- That's probably another language with same name. The one described in that wiki article have is from . doi:10.1016/j.cl.2005.07.001.
{{cite journal}}
: Cite journal requires|journal=
(help); Missing or empty|title=
(help), and the wiki page was written by the paper/language's author, User talk:Josedeoliveiraguimaraes. Pcap ping 09:28, 17 May 2010 (UTC)- Ah, that makes sense. I hadn't had a chance to look at it closely as I'm currently very busy but "Object-oriented" pretty much gives it away. We really should have an article about the 1977 programming language but not for a little known programming language that happens to go by the same name. --Tothwolf (talk) 12:24, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Reattribution of edits
Usually, after a rename, the edits will be reattributed over a period of time, often several days for accounts with a lengthy editing history. The developers have designed the process to operate slowly since it is resource intensive. There were problems with reattribution causing site outages or failing altogether before this throttling was in place.
Rarely, the reattribution process will not complete due to bugs in MediaWiki, and will leave the contributions split between the old and new accounts. The bureaucrats have no control over this and no means to restart the process if it is stalled.

You are now a Reviewer
Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.
Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.
When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Misplaced Pages:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.
If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. MBisanz 02:28, 20 June 2010 (UTC)

Need help reviewing my article on distributed operating system and redirecting the article on DOS to the real page
Hello guys,
There is no article on distributed operating system on Misplaced Pages. Searching for an article on wikipedia for distributed operating system redirects to single system image which is totally irrelavent. So I took about two months to create this article on Distributed operating systems and finally published it(http://en.wikipedia.org/Distributed_Operating_System). But still when I search for an article on distributed operating systems I am able to get the old one(http://en.wikipedia.org/search/?title=Distributed_operating_system&redirect=no). Can some one help me in resolving this. The only difference is lower case O in Operating and lower case S in Systems. Can some one merge the old one with the new one please. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ksudhir01 (talk • contribs) 07:47, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of List of albums with tracks hidden in the pregap
Hello, Pcap, and thanks for your contributions to Misplaced Pages!
I wanted to let you know that I’m proposing an article that you worked on, List of albums with tracks hidden in the pregap, for deletion because I don't think it meets our criteria for inclusion. If you don't want the article deleted:
- edit the page
- remove the text that looks like this:
{{proposed deletion/dated...}}
- save the page
It helps to explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page. If you have any questions, feel free to ask on the Help Desk. Thanks again for contributing! Truthanado (talk) 22:09, 25 November 2011 (UTC)
Dispute resolution survey
Dispute Resolution – Survey Invite Hello Pcap. I am currently conducting a study on the dispute resolution processes on the English Misplaced Pages, in the hope that the results will help improve these processes in the future. Whether you have used dispute resolution a little or a lot, now we need to know about your experience. The survey takes around five minutes, and the information you provide will not be shared with third parties other than to assist in analyzing the results of the survey. No personally identifiable information will be released. Please click HERE to participate. You are receiving this invitation because you have had some activity in dispute resolution over the past year. For more information, please see the associated research page. Orphaned non-free media (File:Aneptunelogon.gif)
Thanks for uploading File:Aneptunelogon.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Misplaced Pages under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Misplaced Pages. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Misplaced Pages (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Misplaced Pages page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Werieth (talk) 14:40, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open!
Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
