Monitoring page use

Concern raised by: SandyGeorgia (Talk)

Description of the issue: I am concerned that the Monitoring page is not being used for its intended purpose (Motion 9 and Motion 11), which is to coordinate mentoring activity and make sure all mentors are involved and issues are contained without escalation to uninvolved parties. The following threads are of concern:

  1. Original issue
  2. Mattisse talk thread 1
  3. Mattisse talk thread 2
  4. Geometry guy talk thread 1
  5. Geometry guy talk thread 2
  6. Moni3 talk thread

Date of alert: 18:46, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

Actions taken by mentors: (1) Misunderstandings about the Monitoring and Alerts pages have been clarified and minor fixes (links, redirects etc.) have been made; (2) Following discussion on the Monitoring talk page, Mattisse has been indefinitely banned from 2010 Haiti earthquake and its talk page; (3) The Monitoring page has been used to record this for future reference.

Conclusion and consensus advice for Mattisse: The Monitoring page (and by extension its talk page) can or should only be edited by Mattisse and her advisors, and as such it provides a useful forum for discussion: it is more transparent than email, is accessible to all advisors, but also avoids escalation and involvement of other editors. However, it is a matter for Mattisse and advisors to decide how best to make use of this resource. In particular, the user talk pages of Mattisse and her advisors are also places where Mattisse and her advisors are free to communicate. Other editors may contribute to user talk discussions if they wish, but that is also a matter of choice.

  • Mattisse is advised that if she has concerns or questions about the actions of one her advisors, Misplaced Pages talk:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Mattisse/Monitoring is a good place to register her concerns, as all advisors may respond, but other editors will not interject.
  • Mattisse is requested not to edit significantly the content of her comments on talk pages after other editors have replied to them.
  • Mattisse is warned that accusations (explicit or implicit) of article ownership or encouraging article ownership are personalizations and comments regarding the motivations or good faith of other editors; such comments are contrary to her Plan.

April Fool's TFA discussion

Concern raised by: Karanacs (talk) and Andy Walsh (talk)

Description of the issue: There is a current discussion at WT:FAC on which FAs would be appropriate as Today's Featured Article on April Fool's Day. One editor suggested the recently promoted wife selling (English custom), which had been nominated by user:Malleus Fatuorum, with whom Mattisse has had previous conflicts. Mattisse's first comment to the discussion was "It would be a way of beefing up it's low page view statistics and maybe even get it linked to other articles at Misplaced Pages so that it contributes to the general encyclopedia". This comment was interpreted by me and at least one other editor (Malleus) as denigrating the article wife selling. Later in the discussion, Raul654 listed his favorites for that day. Mattisse's response was "Hum, says a lot about the culture of TFA. Scary. and certainly not concerned with wider Misplaced Pages interest and participation". This was followed later by "I think TFA should be concerned with the general reader, rather than what gives FA editors a chuckle". Mattisse may have good points (the social problem of wife selling in cultures where women have low status), but there are better and less divisive ways to frame those.

Actions taken by mentors:

  • Mattisse advised to restate her position in a reasonable manner (which she did).
