Hi again, you will notice that this article and some related ones are strangely written. The problem historically is that few editors at Misplaced Pages knew much about the topic and none were willing to contend with ], who maintains that his coworker or boss named McGinness has been overlooked by history and should have gotten a Nobel Prize. A few articles were strongly dominated by Proctor, usually indicated by the same image of the melanine-based device that you see on the organic metal page, it is sort of his trademarked homage to McGinness as is the emphasis on an (obscure) article by Hush that credits McGinness with a significant role in the field. The highlighting of the work by Weiss (Aust J Chem) is also intended to deflect glory from the ] et al Nobel. My guess is that all wikipedia articles on organic metals need housecleaning and rewriting, so your efforts are welcome.--] (]) 14:29, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

I saw claims of plagiarism on a group of people made by user "Dian john1" at http://en.wikipedia.org/User_talk:Dian_john1. Although I am a part of this group, I am not going to discuss this issue there, since Misplaced Pages is not a place to make such claims and rebut them. Hey, Materialscientist.

The article ] has been ]&#32;because of the following concern:
Well, I figured ] was ready for good article status because I <i>have</i> been looking at other articles. ] and ], for example, had passed a while back; for stars like COROT-1, I figured there simply wasn't enough to expand it into a ]-style article.
<blockquote>'''Dab page with only two entries.'''</blockquote>

While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, pages may be ].
I'll work on improving other articles of the type, but I feel my efforts in further expanding COROT-1 are limited. Thanks for taking the time to look at it, though. ] (]) 21:04, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{Tlc|proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your ] or on ].
==Elementbox fix==
Hi, here's how I fixed the element box: a look at ] reveals that the elementbox is not coded directly on the page, but uses ]. That template, in turn, uses another template to format the box, ]. Digging into the innards of the Elementbox template shows that it only implemented one set of parameters for the boiling point, as opposed to the three for the melting point. So it was just a matter of making another copy of the boiling point parameters and renaming them appropriately (suffixing "2"). You can look at the history of ] to see what I did. I did have to make one ugly hack to avoid the use of #expr, since that wouldn't let me write "(red)" to indicate the allotrope in the parameters, since that wouldn't parse as a number. So the Celsius value has to be hand-calculated (not too big an annoyance, the same thing is being done for the melting point parameters).

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{Tlc|proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the ], but other ]es exist. In particular, the ] process can result in deletion without discussion, and ] allows discussion to reach ] for deletion.<!-- Template:Proposed deletion notify --> ] (]) 21:30, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
Anyway, this really is the first time I made a non-trivial change to a template, so you might want to ask someone more skilled to take a look at the result and fix up any glaring bugs I introduced in the process. :-) Hope this helps.&mdash;] (]) 01:23, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

could you perhaps look into what has gone on at the ] page today, primarily in its History section? (Asking because in an earlier season, I was impressed by your work in various contexts.) We believe that the carte blanche reversion was too easy of a response, and threw baby out with the bath. We have no opinion on larger matters at that article—we simply found gross misuse of sources, and rampant WP:OR. We are now accused of editorialising, and of OR ourselves, which simply staggers us.

It is our view that the original edit, which was accepted by a registered editor—the article is protected, we do not know whom—should have been allowed to stand, and not reverted by a single editor objecting to the two of us. We suspect bias against us as a non-registered editor.
:Pile on congrats. /mav recalls asking Jimbo eons ago about becoming an admin. His reply was something to the effect of 'I don't really know you, but haven't heard anything bad, so sure, why not?' Surely, some editing of the product should follow. But reversion, so the errors that existed before our edit be returned—we suggest that pursuing that course was the poorest of options, for the sake of a quality article. The edits were not vandalism, were not editorial, and were not WP:OR (as claimed in the all too brief reverting edit summary). Cheers. ] (]) 05:26, 19 December 2024 (UTC)

Thanks. But I am a little uncertain as to what you mean by your comment. Do palaces/monasteries, museums. observatories and towns/counties not appeal to you? What exactly does then? Its not as if I write about comic books or video games or anything. Well I think I don't write about topics which are beyond our expertise but help towards it. They are typically on solid encyclopedic subjects but the country they are about may seem obscure to the western eye because I insist on trying to see us from a neutral world viewpoint. == Semi-Protection of Lil Dicky ==
Yeah, I agree that we also need to be looking at what articles get the most traffic and improving them. Unfortunately given the way people are they generally tend to always be on popular culture, sex and a lot of topics that most traditional encyclopedias wouldn't have. You probably don't know but I have been expanding the ] article, so it is not as if I am stuck in obscuredom all the time! This article gets 6,000 odd hits a day so in a week it will have been viewed by 42,000 people. But sticking to fully expanding other articles which may get a lot of hits but don't interest me, paid editing might get me to do it... TThis is the reason though why we still have truck loads of stubs about world topics outside the "popular" zone because there just arne't enough people interested in them to expand them. To date wikipedia has relied on the contributions of a few individuals who are interested in seemingly obscure countries and topics and they do the brunt of the work in expansion, but for it to all be a big success, quality, we really need more numbers. BUt I am in the frame of mind that if the articles which get a lot of traffic and are cared for by a lot of people then they don't need me hanging on to them and I should be doing my best to try to even up coverage elsewhere... I just try to give wikipedia information about parts of the world they otherwise would not know about, as much as for myself than anybody else. I personally would like to know more about rural counties in say Tibet or Ghana or something than reading about some all-star American baseball pitcher or sitcom star... Yeah its balancing what is personally fun to ''you'' and what interest you and doing it in a way which maximises interest and benefit to others. Everybody is different, so it is not always easy to assess what or what not is useful to others, but I have actually had many emails from people in places like Nepal, Guatemala, Slovenia and all over the world who have said they are grateful for my work on their part of the world which has given them a chance to expand on what I have started so even if the majority of readers couldn't give a damn about ] for instance, I am sure that some people somewhere who are going to northern Indian on a trip or are interested in Tibetan Buddhism will be very grateful to have an article about it or just those who like browsing and learning about any topic!. The problem is catering for all interests and possibilities and maintaining quality. Personally from my viewpoint I think the work I do adds to the interest and depth of wikipedia even if ]. If there is a particular article you'd like to see expanded on a core topic like a major river etc please let me know, I'll be glad to help! I'd be happy to help you expand some articles on earth science/geology etc, it is a shame there aren't more interested in it because these are the real topics we should be covering!! I did a page move by mistake - (an error in judgement). I tried to revert the move, but it has the same title that I did the move under. I was trying to change "Nature Photonics" to "nature photonics" (all small letters). It is the way that the title is published. Anyway, the move produced "Nature photonics" - no help. First, that is not what I intended. Second, all the other Nature journal articles begin with capitals in both words, so this article is no longer consistent with these.

For example: Nature · Nature Biotechnology · Nature Cell Biology · Nature Chemical Biology · Nature Genetics Nature Nanotechnology · Nature Photonics · Nature Physics · Nature Chemistry etc., etc (You should see them all. There is template on the bottom of this article.)

::Thanks for the ALT1 which I approved on the suggestions page. I guess the hook that we've been discussing would come under the odd/weird category. That research has borne out in my experience, since my article ] got 9.6k views on its DYK, possibly due to its military subject. I must admit that the research and the 9.6k views for Westgate have influenced a few of my hooks towards the military since then (doesn't always work!) But the point is: if that research is having a bad effect on the hooks, then perhaps we should remove it from the Wiki page where I saw it? Or perhaps we should put a note next to the bit about the research, saying that inappropriate hooks are unacceptable? If we do that, I guess we should make it clear exactly what is inappropriate, so that we can all agree on guidelines (I'm out of my depth here, and would probably not join in that discussion). He was asking me today if he should start putting his new articles up, and would he get feedback if he did. I told him he could put a note on the talk page of WikiProject Elements, but that would not necessarily guarantee that he would get feedback. I also told him he could perhaps put one or more of his articles into subpages of his user page, and that he could maybe ask you to give him some input into what he is doing and what he wants to do. I also told him that if he didn't mind, I could approach you first since I have "talked" to you a little bit, because of your DYK work. I pointed out that he could also just go ahead and BE BOLD and start putting his articles up into article space, but because he is so very new, he might benefit from some feedback early on in the process. I hope you don't mind, I recommended he contact you soon, so you may be hearing from him before long. By the way, the draft on his subpage 2 is intended to become a subsection of the main ] article. It is also true that the science prizes are often really given for "achievement". Consequently, many people think this is what they are for. But the citations always say "discovery" (of such and such). == 2000 Nobel Chemistry prize ==

The following monograph is available online at . About as good as it gets wikiwise: A senior researcher complaining specifically about the 2000 Chemistry Nobel's mis-allocation of discovery credit in a Springer-Verlag monograph.

''Conducting Polymers, A New Era in Electrochemistry''
10.1007/978-3-540-75930-0_8
György Inzelt

''8. Historical Background (Or: There Is Nothing New Under the Sun)''
Abstract
"The Nobel Prize in Chemistry, 2000, was awarded to Heeger, MacDiarmid and Shirakawa "for the discovery and development of electrically conductive polymers." ''However, there were several forerunners to these distinguished chemists.'' The most important representatives of the family of electrically conductive polymers, polyaniline and polypyrrole, were already being prepared by chemical or electrochemical oxidation in the nineteenth century. In fact, the discovery of polyacetylene in the 1970s—which had no practical importance but helped to arouse the interest of researchers and the public alike—was another episode in the history of conducting polymers. The story of polyaniline is described here in detail."

This chapter describes examples of highly-conductive polyanilines well before Heeger ''et al's'' rediscovery of high conduction in an oxidized, iodine-doped, polyacetylene. Note this is with specific reference to the miss-assignment of discovery credit to ''Heeger et al'' in the 2000 Nobel Prize. Thus, Dr Inzelt's chapter title .. ''..There is nothing new under the Sun..''. Again, because the Nobel citation can be so easily falsified simply by showing the prior papers, the 2000 Chemistry Prize is arguably the cleanest example of such missignment. That is, there are not the usual subjective complications such as who did what and how important was it? Which is why it is a good example to incorporate into the article. Nobody can really argue that the Noble citation is correct or argue that we ought to defer to the opinion of the Nobel committee, who almost certainly had no knowledge of this "prior art". ] (]) 17:51, 25 March 2010 (UTC)

Well I used the 'vandalism only account' option because the initial edits of most of the user were blatant vandalism. Which one are you talking about specifically? -] (]) 00:29, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
:The way I see it, if someone is here to disrupt/vandalize, then the use of warnings has little purpose apart from the standard procedural requirements (warn level 1-4, then block). I understand the whole 'assume good faith' concept, but I think that it is better to take a pro-active approach. Take the Myleeajane example, the first 11 edits is more than sufficient for a block (in my opinion), however, by not taking action you've let the user vandalize another 3 articles. == Please help cleanup botched edits by anon editor ==

Hi, recently an anon editor () made good-faith extensive changes to ], adding unnecessarily verbose section headings, expanding acronyms (sometimes he has a point, but often it's redundant), and in general making the text unnecessarily wordy. Another editor on the same network (possibly the same person on a different dynamic IP) also recently made the same kind of changes to ], which I have cleaned up just yesterday. Most of the edits stem from good intentions (making technical articles more accessible), but the way it's done is rather disruptive. I don't really have the time/patience to go through the changes to Lawrencium, though; could you help? And perhaps track down the person(s) making these edits and helping them understand ]? I'm not sure if it's a single person, or perhaps a misguided school class project trying to contribute to Misplaced Pages in a constructive way but without adequate supervision. Thanks!&mdash;] (]) 19:25, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
:I admit being non-specialist in unstable elements and thus only brushed up some immediate prose and formatting items there. == Editor misusing dashes dismissive of requests to learn ==
Hey, M.S., I got this email from her, but don't know how to reply. Maybe you could be of more help. Feel free to reply to her on her .

Hello. I have been attempting to get ] on board with ] for 3 weeks now, and no matter how many times they tell me they're "chagrined" (] and ] thread), they continue to misuse them and even replace ''good'' dashes with bad ones. I have asked nicely, asked less nicely and issued a direct warning that their continued misuse effectively constitutes vandalism (willfully editing contrary to consensus), but checking if the "sorry" in response to my final warning had meant anything useful, ]. A week after first discussing this with them, and being told that they'd fix their previous errors, I regex searched for their most common pattern, and put a decent amount of time into , but I was playing catch-up. I won't follow this editor around indefinitely fixing every case, so they need to be stopped, but I also recognise that this ignorance isn't blatantly malicious (they do enjoy inserting inappropriate flowery phrases here and there though, when plain English would have been obviously preferable) and they just need to be put straight by someone with some clout, since my efforts have fallen on deaf ears. Hopefully this is enough information for you to make sense of the situation, but please ask for clarification if needed. The IP and Hellocat99 are not the same user. The ip 209.250.175.169 operates on Oakville, Ontario. Hellocat99's IP is 135.26.120.92, which is based in Conroe, Texas. If you have a moment...

could you perhaps look into what has gone on at the Enneagram of Personality page today, primarily in its History section? (Asking because in an earlier season, I was impressed by your work in various contexts.) We believe that the carte blanche reversion was too easy of a response, and threw baby out with the bath. We have no opinion on larger matters at that article—we simply found gross misuse of sources, and rampant WP:OR. We are now accused of editorialising, and of OR ourselves, which simply staggers us.

We won't further egage the reverting editor, as we see no point. But the article is not better for having been returned to its earlier state.

It is our view that the original edit, which was accepted by a registered editor—the article is protected, we do not know whom—should have been allowed to stand, and not reverted by a single editor objecting to the two of us. We suspect bias against us as a non-registered editor.

Surely, some editing of the product should follow. But reversion, so the errors that existed before our edit be returned—we suggest that pursuing that course was the poorest of options, for the sake of a quality article. The edits were not vandalism, were not editorial, and were not WP:OR (as claimed in the all too brief reverting edit summary). Cheers. 71.239.132.212 (talk) 05:26, 19 December 2024 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Sizo

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Sizo requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Misplaced Pages page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • disambiguates zero extant Misplaced Pages pages, regardless of its title; or
  • is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 15:13, 22 December 2024 (UTC)

I have asked nicely, asked less nicely and issued a direct warning that their continued misuse effectively constitutes vandalism (willfully editing contrary to consensus), but checking if the "sorry" in response to my final warning had meant anything useful, I found it had not. A week after first discussing this with them, and being told that they'd fix their previous errors, I regex searched for their most common pattern, and put a decent amount of time into correcting the many I found, but I was playing catch-up. Thank you. Fred Gandt · talk · contribs 09:56, 30 December 2024 (UTC)

2600:4809:7270:F800::/64 removing pronunciations

Hi, yesterday you warned 2600:4809:7270:F800:B974:A7C9:5E41:9A03 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) that they would be blocked the next time they removed content. They have ignored that warning and continue to remove pronunciations, some of them obviously necessary like Gervis. Today's batch of edits are under the IP 2600:4809:7270:F800:F083:671:4921:D5B8 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log). Can you do something to stop this waste of time for other editors? Thanks! CodeTalker (talk) 21:02, 30 December 2024 (UTC)

Old page move

Good day Materialscientist! Back in 2021, you moved Oshana Region to Oshana, undoing a 2009 page move. I cannot find any discussion about this. I would like to undo this, as a) all other regions of Namibia end in "Region", b) its name is so defined by the Government of Namibia, and c) "Oshana" means something on its own: it is a shallow flood plain after which the region is named. Please protest if you're not happy with this move. --Pgallert (talk) 07:55, 31 December 2024 (UTC)

Thank you!

Hi -- just wanted to thank you for all your work being on the ball reverting junk/vandalism from talk pages, it's really helpful to prevent this stuff from being archived and sticking around forever. Gnomingstuff (talk) 17:31, 31 December 2024 (UTC)

Thanks. --2806:10A6:10:159A:2CD2:6980:24FF:D548 (talk) 18:47, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

Trivial request, please?

Hi Materialscientist, I hope you are having a happy new year? An update template has just appeared on my userpage, and I have no idea of what update is needed, or of how to remove the template. I am not a techie - all my formatting has been learned by copying and pasting the formatting done by others, so that little trick won't work here. So please help? Thanks.
