==Early Life and Education==
Born on April 2nd 1949, Shefman grew up in ], ]. He attended ] where he received a ], after which he went to ] where he received a ] in Canadian studies, writing his thesis on ] in Upper Canada.

==Career==
Professionally, Shefman has a long history in human rights in Canada. From 1980 to 1988 he was the national director of the League for Human Rights of ]. While serving in this position, Shefman was called upon to advise the Crown Prosecutor in the ] hate crimes trial of ]. In 1988, he took the position of director of communications and education for the ]. In ] he left the commission to start his own human rights consulting firm.

==Political Career==
From 1997 to 2000, he was a Trustee for the ] Board. Shefman has a long history of involvement with York University. From ] until ], he was a member of the ] Board of Governors. Prior to that he served as President of the York University Alumni Association. Currently he is a fellow of McLaughan College and an Associate of the York University Centre for Practical Ethics.

In ], Shefman was elected to ] for Ward 5. He was elected to this position in a by-election following the resignation of ] upon her election to the ]. Since being elected to City Council, Shefman has spearheaded a new recycling program for the ].
