Hi, I'm a little confused as to why you tagged ] the way you did so, per your talk page header, I've reverted it and am here willing to discuss. My main (and ever so erudite) reply would be that none of the issues you raised were deemed to be problems in the ]; to address your tags, the citation style was deemed acceptable in the review, as the controversial bits have specific footnotes and the general results are sourced by the "general" header of references, and no reviewers felt that the lead was inadequate or the content confusing. Regarding your hidden note "this mentions nothing or wikilinks to nothing in explaining some medals", the place for that information is ], which is the first Wikilink in the article. Compare, for example, ], which does not delve into an explanation of the sport of volleyball and how indoor and beach differ, but merely Wikilinks it as the first word. This is because these two articles are lists - the introductory paragraphs are there to provide some, but not excessive, context. I suggest that, since the article has not changed at all since its FLC, if you really feel that the article is lacking in some critical way that you nominate it at ] for review and potential removal so that broader community input/consensus can be obtained.

Speaking of context, I also reverted edit at ] as you removed, without any real explanation, information that provides context and background for the article and is completely relevant. ] ] 22:43, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

:I've responded on the talk page. And I don't want to get into an edit war but, as has been pointed out on your talk page already, ]. Yes, that's just an essay, but your own talk page header says "If you disagree with an edit I made, revert it and explain why as long as you're willing to discuss it." Discussing it means talking through and coming to some sort of resolution, not stating your opinion and then reverting the other person's edit. Anyhow, if you don't think the page meets ] standards, then please take it to ], which will gain community input, rather than cluttering a page with tags. ] ] 00:19, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

::An uninvolved user has already removed some of your tags, which, combined with its pass at ] suggests that consensus is against the remaining tags that you have placed there. If you're not planning on getting proper community input at ], I will be removing the tags. ] ] 22:13, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

Hello Lihaas. Per you appeared to believe that the mass shooting of Sikhs was "routine news reporting on things like announcements, sports, or celebrities is not a sufficient basis for inclusion in the encyclopedia" (per NOTNEWS). You also appeared to believe that "per ]" was a valid criterion for speedy deletion. In both cases you are off the mark. The first is subjective, sure, and perhaps in your mind the murder of several people in a single incident isn't worthy of an article on Misplaced Pages, that's fine to take it to ], but your second belief, that "NOTNEWS" constitutes sufficient grounds for speedy deletion, is purely erroneous. As an experienced editor, and one who knows ITN well, I'm surprised by this. Please don't waste others' time on this sort of thing again. Cheers. ] (]) 20:18, 5 August 2012 (UTC)
:Sure, I did challenge it, and hey, it's all good. It clearly '''is notable''', and it'll mainpage tomorrow, I betcha!! You've wasted a lot of time, and it would be better if you spent some of that time improving articles rather than mis-spelling your way through mini-rants on talk pages. Please, and most importantly, understand that "NOT NEWS" is '''not''' a criterion for speedy deletion. If you nominate other articles for speedy deletion with this "reason", your nomination will be reverted. After that, ongoing incorrect speedy deletion requests will be considered disruptive. ] (]) 20:30, 5 August 2012 (UTC)
:The point is, regardless of whether or not ] argument applies to a particular article, ] is not a valid ] criterion, and, as a matter of procedure, '''no article can ever''' be speedily deleted on ] grounds, period. If you want an article to be speedily deleted, you have to specify one of the valid CSD criteria (A7, A1, G2 or whatever). == ] edit ==

Hi, Lihaas. I do not mean to be a nuisance or annoyance, and do forgive me if I am of offense. However, I wanted to let you know I reverted because I don't think you read the deleted paragraph through; only approximately half of that paragraph actually involves a summary of what Jamaica is and can be considered redundant to the actual Jamaica article. When I wrote the paragraph, my intent was to provide an introduction towards what each country is. I've attempted to standardize this across other articles of this kind, including ], ], and ]; I am aware that the characteristics that make understanding the context of each country useful are not readily known to the general public, although known information obviously varies with each situation. Additionally, I know how easy it is for readers to become distracted when they are missing aspects of background information that makes each article helpful and understandable. I would like to minimize the number of readers who become distracted early because they are missing useful information. Let me know if you still object to my action, and we can discuss it further. --''']'''(]) 09:22, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
:I think I understand what you mean in that the information would be redundant if the ] article was ever expanded. It would be effective to "see also" the national Olympic pages of the country (it is already linked inside the infobox at the upper-right hand side, but it isn't very obvious). However, to remove the information still would not address my concern that the Jamaica at the 2008 Summer Olympics article would be less complete. --''']'''(]) 22:28, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
::The edit in question also condenses the information so it acts as a quick summary. As I said before, I feel that removing the information may make the article less complete. A quick summary as such, while not directly related to the article's content, also makes it simpler for readers. If they need specifics on how the country did at other Games, then they can go to other pages. The example I will use is the ] article, which I did not help to write, that expands on how each Byelorussian team did at each of its Games (except for the 2012 games, which have not yet been added). It additionally lists a summary of Belarus' participation as a constituent under the Soviet banner. If ] were expanded to include the background section, you are right in that it would not be inherently necessary. However, it would give readers easier access to the information. They would not have to navigate off the page in order to look for context.

::In other words, I agree that the edited information is not inherently necessary on the Jamaica at the 2008 Summer Olympics article. However, I still do feel that it is more expedient for readers to have this information on that page. The Jamaica at the Olympics article, when expanded, will go into this background information in much greater detail. --''']'''(]) 23:53, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
:::I have been thinking, and I am inclined to believe that you are right. I was looking back on other possibilities, and I think the background section can be filled with information about that specific delegation's preparations. However, the issue is that not only every place pays great attention to their specific delegation, that languages do serve as a barrier in translations (especially for countries like Mongolia or Laos), and that past Olympics will be difficult to study. Geez, though; that is a lot of fixing to do. I will have to tackle the ones I have already done, but with time.
:::I would be glad to help with updating the 2012 Olympic nations articles. I apologize for the late reply, so hopefully I haven't fallen to far behind. --''']'''(]) 06:06, 15 August 2012 (UTC)
:::Hm. It looks like ] has already taken care of everything. For his (or her) work, there isn't quite anything left to fix. -''']'''(]) 06:10, 15 August 2012 (UTC) (reworded 06:16, 15 August 2012 (UTC))

== {{tl|notable}} tag at ] ==

Hi Lihaas, just wanted to leave you a courtesy notice that I'm removing your {{tl|notable}} at ]. Your internal note suggested you were tagging it because you didn't think it was a good title. I agree that it's a bit awkward, but the tag doesn't strike me as an appropriate way of dealing with the issue based on the template's usage notes. Perhaps a ] is in order. "Non-service in the Israeli military," perhaps? But unless you think the article wouldn't pass AfD or something, I don't think it's the right tag for such a well-sourced article. Please stop putting useless tables with redlinks to articles that will not (and '''can not''') be created until early 2016. These pages look like a joke with empty tables. At this point, in mid-2012, they should be simple stubs, perhaps with comments about changes to the program or comments about the venue under construction. :What is the purpose the 2016 calendar when the event schedule has not been announced? For the next few years, it will just be an empty table with only row headers for the sports. The list of sports appears immediately above where you want to place that big table, so the links to the sport articles are redundant. == Getting Wikimedians to the Olympic Games ==

Hi. I am part of an effort to get Wikimedians access to the 2016 Summer Olympics as accredited reporters and photographers. Part of this effort includes covering the ]. Two Wikimedians have credentials to attend these games as reporters through Wikimedia Australia. As English Misplaced Pages does not allow original reporting, this is largely through ] with a project page found at ]. If you are interested in helping to get Wikimedians to the next Summer Olympics,I'd encourage you to assist with Wikinews efforts, and also to work on all language 2012 Summer Paralympic Misplaced Pages articles before, during and after the Games to demonstrate a track record of success. Thank you. --] (]) 04:36, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
: If you can comment back again on my talk page. :) Anyway, Wikinews categorically allows for original reporting. I've done a fair amount of it. ] is an example of one story I wrote that featured original reporting. ] is another. Intellectual disability is back in the Paralympics for the first time since I think 2000, so some of the World Games for people with intellectual disabilities will be there. (Special Olympics would be possible but it would still require getting past the notability hurdle.) Television coverage will be limited but there should be plenty of print for some things. http://abc.net.au is the Australian broadcaster and they do a pretty good job. Getting something for the two missing events would be fantastic. Leveraging the Paralympics for the Olympics in this case will ultimately come down to the Wikinews part. (To a degree, in an Australian context, the Misplaced Pages part is done. We got articles we needed created about the Australian Paralympians. We took a good crack at getting some of the ] created and worked on. We have pictures of almost all the Australian Paralympians, pictures of the Japanese men, Japanese women, Australian men, Australian women, Chinese women and Chinese men, and German women national wheelchair basketball teams in advance. Thus, some pictures of athletes to illustrate for articles if they get mentioned. This helps on a national level, as Olympic coverage will be contingent on getting a national committee to recognise WMF or a chapter as a media organisation. It is doable, but they need track record of success.) babbling. But yay! :D Paralympic help. :D --] (]) 07:15, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

Canadian articles can use both date formats

Despite the fact that Canada is a Commonwealth country, articles related to Canada may use either format, per MOS:DATE TIES (Articles related to Canada may use either format consistently.). Thus, we use the first date format used in this article, which in this case was mdy. Thus, per WP:RETAIN (The date format chosen by the first major contributor...), there is no good reason to switch the article to dmy dates. Canuck 22:01, October 22, 2014 (UTC)

Edit warring

Stop icon

Your recent editing history at 2016 attack in Nice shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the article's talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See BRD for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in your being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. - 02:38, 15 July 2016‎ LjL (talk | contribs)

Peer review newsletter #1

Introduction

Hello to all! I do not intend to write a regular peer review newsletter but there does occasionally come a time when those interested in contributing to peer review should be contacted, and now is one. I've mailed this out to everyone on the peer review volunteers list, and some editors that have contributed to past discussions. Apologies if I've left you off or contacted you and you didn't want it. Next time there is a newsletter / mass message it will be opt in (here), I'll talk about this below - but first:

  • THANK YOU! I want to thank you for your contributions and for volunteering on the list to help out at peer review. Thank you!
  • Peer review is useful! It's good to have an active peer review process. This is often the way that we help new or developing editors understand our ways, and improve the quality of their editing - so it fills an important and necessary gap between the teahouse (kindly introduction to our Wikiways) and GA and FA reviews (specific standards uphelp according to a set of quality criteria). And we should try and improve this process where possible (automate, simplify) so it can be used and maintained easily.

Updates

It can get quite lonely tinkering with peer review...With a bit of effort we can renovate the place to look like this!

Update #1: the peer review volunteers list is changing

The list is here in case you've forgotten: WP:PRV. Kadane has kindly offered to create a bot that will ping editors on the volunteers list with unanswered reviews in their chosen subject areas every so often. You can choose the time interval by changing the "contact" parameter. Options are "never", "monthly", "quarterly", "halfyearly", and "annually". For example:

  • {{PRV|JohnSmith|History of engineering|contact=monthly}} - if placed in the "History" section, JohnSmith will receive an automatic update every month about unanswered peer reviews relating to history.
  • {{PRV|JaneSmith|Mesopotamian geography, Norwegian fjords|contact=annually}} - if placed in the "Geography" section, JaneSmith will receive an automatic update every yearly about unanswered peer reviews in the geography area.

We can at this stage only use the broad peer review section titles to guide what reviews you'd like, but that's better than nothing! You can also set an interest in multiple separate subject areas that will be updated at different times.

Update #2: a (lean) WikiProject Peer review

I don't think we need a WikiProject with a giant bureaucracy nor all sorts of whiz-bang features. However over the last few years I've found there are times when it would have been useful to have a list of editors that would like to contribute to discussions about the peer review process (e.g. instructions, layout, automation, simplification etc.). Also, it can get kind of lonely on the talk page as I am (correct me if I'm wrong) the only regular contributor, with most editors moving on after 6 - 12 months.

So, I've decided to create "WikiProject Peer review". If you'd like to contribute to the WikiProject, or make yourself available for future newsletters or contact, please add yourself to the list of members.

Update #3: advertising

We plan to do some advertising of peer review, to let editors know about it and how to volunteer to help, at a couple of different venues (Signpost, Village pump, Teahouse etc.) - but have been waiting until we get this bot + WikiProject set up so we have a way to help interested editors make more enduring contributions. So consider yourself forewarned!

And... that's it!

I wish you all well on your Wikivoyages, Tom (LT) (talk) 00:31, 11 August 2018 (UTC)
