'''Copyright issue?'''
If you are coming to open a discussion with me because I reverted an edit of yours as a copyright issue, please make sure your post includes a link to the article in question - not just the name of the article, a link. Then read the following:
== Luba Mason entry deleted June 2011 (A7) ==
I typically use an edit summary with "copyright issue re ''URL''", or "cv ''URL''". The URL identifies source material that matches your edit too closely.
The entry on Luba Mason that you deleted in June 2011 was not created by me, and may have had little information. I believe she would be sufficiently 'noteworthy' with Broadway credits for decades, as well as tv roles, and 2 cds also to her credit. If you do a search on Misplaced Pages for her name, you will find many entries referencing her work.
I would like to post a complete bio and artist credits for her, can I recreate this page?
I don't know how else to ask this question.
Thank you! | |||

'''Copy Within Misplaced Pages'''
Thank you, I'll do that. A question - if Luba gives me her press release bio which is also on her web page, is that copyright infringement, or fair use? I assume the format would have to be adapted, but would the text be ok? ] (]) 22:40, 27 September 2012 (UTC)weinwalk
If you added material to an article which came from an existing article in Misplaced Pages, it is highly likely that this will be flagged as a potential copyright violation in our CopyPatrol software.
:In general, no, not OK. Some people assume that because a press release is intended to be spread as widely as possible, it not under copyright, but in general it is. Unless it has been licensed appropriately (which is rare), not only can you not use the text as is, you cannot ] it. You can reference it, and you can use facts from it, but the bio should be written from scratch, ideally using multiple sources.--]] 22:58, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
If you followed the best practices at ], you left an edit summary indicating the source, I will mark it as acceptable, and you are probably not reading this message. On the other hand, if you did not identify what you did in an edit summary, then I probably reverted the edit. However, the indicated source URL will not be the Misplaced Pages article, it will be be some site that copied from Misplaced Pages. (As a technical point, this is not a false positive because failing to follow best practices means that the attribution requirements have not been followed.) If the edit has been revision deleted, let me know so I can reverse it and you can provide the proper attribution. If it was not revision deleted but simply reverted, feel free to undo my revert, explaining carefully in the edit summary why you are doing so and add the proper attribution.

== Copyright violations on Chartered Institutes for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity ==
Hi, you deleted a restored article while I was working on it; see ]. As I understand ], there is no need to delete page history that was illegal; it is sufficent to replace it with legal text. Have I misunderstood the rules? Would you have left it if I had posted {{tl|Under construction}} on the restored page, replacing the speedy-deletion request, before I started detailed editing?
https://en.wikipedia.org/Draft:Chartered_Institute_for_the_Management_of_Sport_and_Physical_Activity
Now that the page is satisfactory, may I restore the page history? It would be appropriate to record the original contributor for the cast list. RSVP here. – ] '''<font color="#FF0000">]</font>'''] 13:22, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
:I don't believe that is acceptable, although this is a large place, and it is conceivable someone else thinks so. In general, material in violation of copyright is not acceptable, not in article space, and not in user space. There may have been a time when it was standard to userfy such an article, on the assumption that it would be quickly fixed, but that is no longer the acceptable practice. In fact, even when material subject to copyright have been completely eliminated, it may remain in the article history, and we are increasingly using revdel to remove prior versions. Given this, it no longer makes sense to userfy material that has been deleted due to copyright issues.
Thank you for flagging the copyright violation. I agree with the removal. However, there was other content that was removed that did not come from the website you flagged. This included infobox additions, a new section, and other text in the introduction not related to the vision/mission paragraphs.
:The under construction tag would not have helped. That tag would be an alter if some references were malformed, or tables were being designed, as a signal to a reviewer that some editing issues are likely to be fixed soon (ideally minutes or hours, but not days).--]] 13:33, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
::For the record, I was working within minutes, not days. – ] '''<font color="#FF0000">]</font>''']
: I was puzzled by your statement '' As I understand WP:COPYVIO, there is no need to delete page history that was illegal; it is sufficient to replace it with legal text.''. I think that is coming from ''This will give interested contributors a week to verify permission for the text or propose a rewrite.'' If so, the time allowance is for situation where there appears to be a problem, but there is some question. Note that it follows ''If the criteria for speedy deletion do not apply...''. In my opinion, the problem in Life Goes On (2009 film) was unambiguous, so it qualified for speedy deletion.--]] 13:42, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
::I was referring not to that passage, but to the following:
::*''If all of the content of a page appears to be a copyright infringement or removing the problem text is not an option because it would render the article unreadable, check the page history; if an older non-infringing version of the page exists, you should revert the page to that version.'' This does not imply any need for revdel.
::*''If there is no such older version, you may be able to re-write the page from scratch, but failing that, the page will normally need to be deleted.'' Your interpretation seems to be that '''even if''' an editor is able to re-write the page from scratch, the page history to date must be deleted.
::If you are confident of your interpretation, please revise the page ] accordingly, or at least propose it on the talk page. – ] '''<font color="#FF0000">]</font>'''] 14:34, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
::: I may not be following. The first of the two points covers a situation where an article was acceptable at some time, but someone has added copyvio material in a later version. If one can remove the material, it can be done, or it not, one can revert to an earlier version. That does not apply to Life Goes On (2009 film), as the problem existed in all versions.
::: So the second condition applies, ''If there is no such older version...'''. In that case, ''the page will normally need to be deleted''. Which I did. The only thing missing is the more current procedure of revdeling if a revert or edit of copyvio material is used. I will make that suggestion. However, I'm not yet convinced we are on the same page.--]] 14:45, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
{{od}}I'm ] on whether and how to change the policy wording. Thanks for pointing out the deficiency. --]] 15:31, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
I have reintroduced these elements onto the page. I will leave mission/vision absent.
:You're welcome. In case my points are worth explaining another way:
:*In the first bullet above, the proc allows reversion to a previous good version, and does not mention any need to revdel the COPYVIO versions.
:*In the second one, the proc currently allows an alternative option of a full rewrite, again implying that (provided that is done) then the copyvio versions could then remain in history. – ] '''<font color="#FF0000">]</font>'''] 14:10, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
::: Thanks for your follow up clarification. I don't know whether you had a chance to follow my conversation with MRG, but it was enlightening to me, as it cleared up a misconception I had. I knew it was legally problematic to have copyvios visible, but I thought it was also problematic to haven them even in history. That turns out not to be the case (caveat, ], and I am not qualified to give legal advice) and we revdel copyvios in history because it helps prevent the possibility of some editor mistakenly reverting to a copyvio. This is not a major concern if the article is in decent shape, but has a snippet of copyvio material somewhere in the history, but it is more of a potential problem if the removal of copyvio material takes a large article down to a stub - some overzealous editor might see a good-looking version in history and mistakenly think that the "good material" removal was vandalism. Better to revdel and remove the possibility.
::: Revdel is a relatively recent tool, and the Copyvio policy page was written long before it existed. Yes, when the tool came into being, we should have identified all places that should mention it, but there's a lot of things we should do. Now that I have a better understanding of the rationale and history, I'll propose some new wording.
::: On the second point, I see your point, and agree the current wording needs some tweaking. I'll try to address that as well. I do have too many irons in the fire, and I see several hundred unprocessed OTRS requests, so I won't promise the wording change will happen right away, but I'll try to get to it.--]] 14:25, 4 October 2012 (UTC)

You must have asked the wrong user, since I'm not an image expert. If I understand rightly, NFCR is for situations when nonfree content is being used or considered, and someone wants an opinion about whether that use be fair; it doesn't look like a deletion page, although of course deletion may result from a discussion that concludes that a use is unfair. FFD is for all types of files that need to be deleted; if you have a non-copyright reason for deleting an image, it almost certainly will need to go to FFD, because the non-copyright reasons for speedy deletion of images are rather few. ] (]) 17:51, 4 October 2012 (UTC)

:I'm worried my point may not be clear, so I'll try again. If I thought the expression were a violation of policy, I would have redacted it myself. I don't think it is a violation of policy, but it clearly offended an editor. The editor in question is making a number of ridiculous arguments, and it is quite fair to characterize the '''arguments''' thusly. However, I fear that a general disdain for the editors arguments is manifesting itself as a disdain for the editor. That line should not be crossed. It was crossed with the labeling of the section. I think carving off the section was a brilliant idea; while the choice of section name was less brilliant. I would find it easier to respond to the editor if I could say" all your arguments are ridiculous, knock it off" but you muddy the waters. I changed the section name, but I won't redact the expletive. I hoped you would.--]] 16:22, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

Malleus's response, while strongly worded, wasn't a personal attack, but a strong version of "stop that". I agree with you that there is no comparison, but not in the way you think. ::::Obviously there is a difference of opinion. I think you're wrong for letting another editor use profanity and you think I'm wrong for saying Smithers. Malleus has told editors to ''fuck off'' before and driven other editors to the point of irritation. Any editor could have 1 edit, 100 edits, 1000 edits, 10000 edits or 100000+ edits - but that does not give him/her permission to use profanity against other editors. Simply saying an abrasive editor is still on here because he/she has contributed much to Misplaced Pages does not excuse such behaviour. To me it seems a rule for one, a rule for another it seems. ** Hello. You right in some sense. Admin of Russian Misplaced Pages:<u> http://ru.wikipedia.org/Участник:Carn </u>(has the big blame). He is already in the Hall (as and the Founder). Only the personal revenge is the reason of the bad situation. Carn quarreled with webmaster Archive. Till this Carn even suggested to him write the whole article about the great-grandson of the baron (Sergey Bulichyov - Сергей Булычёв). Info on the great-grandson was added in the section about famous people Dorogobug (town-motherland of Sergey). This was editing of Carn personally. Daughter of the professor Яков Юдельсон wished restore contribution of father - old man got award:<u> http://www.rg.ru/2006/01/17/nagradi-dok.html </u>(from the president of Russia). But his Honer must be restored (very badly - create damage for such people). I have no relation to the Hall (but - I say: you can save Honor of Jimbo Wales). How? Restore topic about Sergey Bulichyov (you can make roll back of all changes of Carn on this issue - including). And Jimbo will leave bloody murderer in the Hall of Shame. Will be free of the such "Honor". If you are agree - I can give you the simple scheme: to implement the great support in relation of the Founder of Misplaced Pages (several of the important and logical links mainly) ????? If you do not want help to him - is your right. In the social network Vkontakte everyone knows about different events. Jimbo already in the official group of the UN there:<u> http://vk.com/unwebsiteinrussian </u>-<u> http://vk.com/wall-40572745_208 </u>(Vkontakte almost as like Facebook). * <big>Many messages which you got here - are not from people with the needed authority. They nothing know about many things (info in different contexts). Small number of the obligations - are nonsence. Because Jimbo Wales and admins must change rules of Misplaced Pages in accordance with a Law (of any jurisdiction which is represented on Misplaced Pages). International legislation - also. It is great trouble for him (he wants use separate jurisdictions and in the same time he focuses attention on the law of Florida). When he wants use separate jurisdiction - he must respect legislation of relevant countries (hundreds countries). A large number of them does not let to insult people and block them by the local rules. Thus, he must select (it is great trouble - I know). When Jimbo writes that Florida is the God - this means: Jimbo is owner of the wiki System (Wikipedias on all languages must respect words of the its Founder). Because not owner has no right say: Florida is God. Owners of the System must carry the responsibility in this case and double standarts .... (respect of a large number of legislations - is reality and nothing more). Such message like this - is not simply so (like template - the more so). Jimbo has chance find public response soon. == Draft:Tom D. O'Malley - draft versus sanbox ==
== Discussion at Misplaced Pages:Miscellany for deletion/User:Sally Season ==
Hello Sphilbrick - I have a quick question regarding the best location on wiki to develop draft articles.
] You are invited to join the discussion at ]. {{#if:|{{{more}}}}} ] (]) 07:51, 25 October 2012 (UTC){{z48}}
Background: I am developing what will be a very comprehensive article on Tom O'Malley (the founder of the modern independent refining industry). I grabbed parts of a relatively weak (and 25-year-old stale article from Encyclopedia.com) as a starting framework. My article will be 5-10x as long as the starting point and probably have >100 references. However, while it was sitting in draft mode (for literally minutes) without being submitted under AfC, and without its citations, a bot picked up the similarity with encyclopedia.com (which surprised me given that it was a draft as patrolling drafts seems a bit odd). I then cut the text out and put it into my sandbox - leaving the draft space empty but did not delete the draft shell as I plan to repopulate when the article is more mature.
== Your speedy deletion ==
The sandbox does not appear to be bot-patrolled (please disabuse me if this is wrong).
You did not respond to my discussion on the talk page, pointing you and others to the discussion of the similar category.
I have run into similar issues when I bring in a large new article from MS Word all at once and save before the citations have been completed (in draft mode). Should all of this work be done in the sandbox versus the draft space? This seems a bit counterintuitive to me. thank you
Why did you label it an "attack page". <small><span style="border:1px solid black;padding:1px;">]]</span></small> 17:01, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
:Let's try acting like grownups.--]] 17:02, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
::I'm not the little boy throwing the board off the table....
::Please respond on the talk page of the category, without the uncivilities: Again, why did you cut short the community discussion? The parallel category is under discussion and the characterization of it as an attack page has been disputed. Nominate it for a proper deletion, if you want, but respect the community discussion. <small><span style="border:1px solid black;padding:1px;">]]</span></small> 17:06, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
::: Not interested. If you recreate, I won't touch it again, but I don't see this as productive.--]] 17:21, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
::::Many people don't like the populated category, but even ScottMacDonald (finally) has agreed to respect the community discussion. I would ask that you let that discussion run its course, as a courtesy. Of course, you or another editor is welcome to nominate it for a standard deletion (not speedy, given that many experienced administrators have disputed the speedy deletion as improper).
::::My question is: If you regard that phrase as being an attack, why haven't you sanctioned/warned/complained to AGK---its author? <small><span style="border:1px solid black;padding:1px;">]]</span></small> 17:34, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
::::: Good grief, this is not worth the time. When I am working on potential speedies, I have a routine, developed form hundreds of examples. In almost all cases, I make sure the author has been notified, as I think it is quite rude to delete something and not let the author know. On many occasions, I have declined to carry out a CSD, and asked the editor proposing it to make sure they notify the author. Early on, I did this for all cases, but I quickly learned that it is a waste of time with attack pages. I've probably deleted a 100. In every single other case, it was a drive by, and a notification, or warning, is a waste of time. So now, when I see a possible attack page, identified in red, for especially speedy action, I read it to ensure that there is something negative (which there was) and delete it and move on.
::::: So I missed one. I'm happy with my weighing of type I and Type II errors I'm not about to spend five minutes research on the next 100 attack pages in case it came form a regular and some tut-tutting is warranted. In the meantime, the OTRS request for permissions queue has reached 474 and I have better things to do with my time.--]] 17:45, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
:::::::Thanks for the reply, which does explain things. Keep up the good work. (I should have overlooked the "behave like adults" edit description, and not replied in kind---or unkind.) Regards, <small><span style="border:1px solid black;padding:1px;">]]</span></small> 17:57, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
:::::::: My apologies for the snippy reply. I shouldn't be under stress, as I am on vacation, but I seem to have a bigger pile of things to do than when I'm working.--]] 18:03, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

Articles does need a bit of a structure and a lot of improvement. There were some major problems at one point with the article because it seemed to only acknowledge that women in the United States played basketball. I tried to neutralise that some. If I was doing a major improvement effort on the article, I'd honestly start by finding sources and fully citing what I can, blow out as much of the article as possible with full citations. Once that blowout was done, then see where daughter articles can be copied and what completed sections could be rewritten a bit and then put into another article like history of basketball. --] (]) 20:58, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
: My knowledge tends to US centric with a fair bit of Australian knowledhe thrown in. I think my book collection probably covers England to a degree. If I was focusing on the broad rules, I would go with the FIBA rules for international competition as the international default. explains some of the differences. FIBA rules are often used as the international standard for domestic competitions for nation's with Olympic aspirations as you want your women consistently playing them so there is no whip saw confusion between one rule set and another. ] might be a place to start looking for people. The basketball project doesn't tend to get as much assistance is it could, but there are some eyes on the women's side.--] (]) 21:22, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
:I believe the sandbox is patrolled. It must be as I occasionally see it pop up in the notifications of potential copyright issues. Neither the draft space nor the sandbox are acceptable places for starting articles if your approach is to bring in copyrighted information and then clean it up. While I personally think that's never a desirable editing approach, I get that sometimes people do it that way. If you choose to work that way, it must be done off-line.

:With rare exceptions, everything you add to an article should be in your own words. Some of the exceptions include short quotes with the material is in a block quote or marked with quote marks and attributed. Other exceptions include public domain text which is properly attributed. My guess is some people are confused with the term public domain and think that things found in public websites constitute public domain. If that's your assumption it is quite incorrect.

On the ] article you reversed my additions but I am not sure why it broke copyright rules, thank you for understanding my good intentions. ] (]) 00:01, 22 December 2024 (UTC)

:Now check out and look at the first sentence of the biodiversity section:

:That sentence is a close call, and had it simply been that sentence I would've let it go. However, look at your second sentence:

:And now the second sentence of the site:

:There are several additional sentences, some identical, some close paraphrases.
:The next issue is whether the source issue is acceptably licensed so that it could be used (with attribution course)
:Many sites include a footer with the copyright status of the site. In this case, there is no such indication at the bottom of the page, nor is there at the bottom of the . Occasionally, I will run across editors who think the absence of a copyright statement means there is no copyright. While that was true many decades ago, the law was changed and the default assumption is that material is subject to full copyright even if there is no particular notice. There are some exceptions such as material created by US federal employees in the course of their employment, but that doesn't apply here.
:The site appears to be associated with the country Latvia. While I have not memorized the copyright laws in every country, many countries are part of the ]. Latvia has been a signatory since 1995. ::Thank you for such a kind response. But does this mean I can't use the information from the site or does this mean I just have to write in my own words? ] (]) 13:39, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
:::You can use the information, in fact you should use it as a reference, but you should write it in your own words. I urge you to read ]. Some editors were under the impression that as long as they change a few words here and there will not be an exact copy which is correct, the key issue is whether it's essentially the same thing. This can be tricky as your goal is to make the same point. Good practice is not to copy a sentence and then try to change it, but read the whole site and ideally some other relevant site, and then write your own summary. When done, take a look at the original source on the chance your memory is so good you managed to largely reproduce it. == What's the point of contributing? ==
I just edited Bedinvetmab to add the MOA which is missing. I pulled the info from the manufacturers prescribing information - i.e. the primary source and my edit was removed because of copyright violations? This is my first contribution to Misplaced Pages and based on this experience likely my last. ] (]) 17:58, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
:I hope you will reconsider.
:The early edits of many new contributors arise because they read an article, realize some important information is missing, go out and find that information and add that information copying and pasting from the original source, not realizing that this is almost always a violation of copyright policy.
:Contributing to Misplaced Pages is a little bit harder than some realize, because it means you have to write the information in your own words (with some rare exceptions such as identified short quotes, and material from some public domain sources.)
:We want material added to Misplaced Pages articles to be reliable and while it might seem obvious that the words written by the actual manufacturer would be the best source, that's not necessarily the case. Manufacturers have a potential conflict of interest. One hopes they write factually and unbiased but one can't be sure, which is why we like to support additions to articles with citations to reliable sources that is places that have a reputation for being unbiased.
:You asked about the point of contributing. The point is that when done correctly, Misplaced Pages can serve as a source of information which is as free of bias is we as a community can manage. All done by volunteers and free to the public. ]] 18:11, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
::Makes sense on one hand, on the other hand, if the point is to fact check because "while it might seem obvious that the words written by the actual manufacturer would be the best source, that's not necessarily the case. Manufacturers have a potential conflict of interest." then I would have expected the community to edit what I wrote if it's factually incorrect rather than delete it. ] (]) 18:18, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
:::There are two issues which relate to two of the five pillers of Misplaced Pages. ]
:::The second pillar: | |||
:::'''Misplaced Pages is written from a neutral point of view'''
:::Is why we have concerns about accepting material from the manufacturer without question. That's why we push for "citations based on reliable sources" in sources with a conflict of interest which aren't viewed as reliable. That doesn't totally exclude the use of information from a manufacturer. For example a statement such as "according to the manufacturer, lorem Ipsum..." Might be acceptable if it's clear that the words are not in Misplaced Pages's voice and should be taken with a grain of salt.
:::The second issue relates to the third pillar:
:::'''Misplaced Pages is free content that anyone can use, edit, and distribute'''

:I'm puzzled that you say it was "just a quote from a newspaper". That's exactly what is meant by violation of copyright rules. It is permitted to use short quotes if enclosed in quotation marks or set off as a block quote and if they are properly sourced neither of which apply here.

Based on my understanding of German copyright law I've gathered within Misplaced Pages regarding Public Domain material, I believe the material in the source PDF is PD in both Germany and the US, based on a lack of a named author, and that it was published a few days short of 80 years ago.
== Adam Joseph == | |||
While the very lightly edited machine translation was adequate for my purposes on StackExchange, it needs a complete rewrite in my own words for easier comprehension on Misplaced Pages, which was what I was in the midst of.

:I care. Misplaced Pages takes copyright very seriously. Did you not understand the question about "sirrahpro"? sirrahpro owns the copyright to the image you uploaded. If you are that person, you can do it. That's why I asked, it was hardly an idiotic question. That you don't understand the question probably means you aren't that person.--]] 17:52, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
::Let's clear some things up. First, this is a ], meaning that I did not that this is not video (but that does not mean that I have continuously done in this in the past). This is "Adam Joseph performing1"(not a screenshot), which means I took this (personally). Since I work for the so called "press" (as a assistant photographer), I split my time between New York (USA), Different areas of Japan (mainly "Shibuya, Tokyo" and "Osaka", and "Fukuoka"). With that being said, I get access to many concerts. Now that you understand that, I hope that explains how I get most of my pictures. ] (]) 18:47, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
:::Well, I'm in favor of clearing things up, but this hasn't achieved that purpose. First, I cannot parse ''meaning that I did not that this is not video (but that does not mean that I have continuously done in this in the past)''. I don't know what you meant to say. Second, if you are trying to make a technical point about screenshots, fine, but to quote something I heard recently "who cares?" Seriously, does it matter whether it is a screenshot or something else? Third, what does any of this have to do with the images I deleted? In one case, it occurred to me that it might be your copyright, so I asked, and you called it an idiotic question. Fourth, in the case of the photo you claim to have taken, I indicated that you needed to supply permission, and you deleted the post, without a response. Any reasonable person will assume you aren't planning to provide permission, so I deleted it. Fifth, I welcome contributors who have photographic skills. Mine, sadly are lacking, so I am appreciative of anyone who is willing to freely give their work to Misplaced Pages. However, deleting reasonable questions, and taking pot shots at people trying to help makes things difficult, Do you disagree?--]] 18:59, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
::::I will ask that excuse any previous or current grammar errors I have made. Currently I am multi-tasking. And I have been doing so for the past three hours. It is hard to keep your focus in different areas of importance. Anyway, what I meant to say is... ''this is a ], meaning that I did not take this picture and that this is not my video.'' With that being said, this does not mean I have continuously done in this in the past (Uploaded screenshots). Also, "NatalieStewart.jpg" is my picture. I do not have a problem with people freely using that picture. It is not copyrighted. It just a picture I took during the concert and uploaded here. No permission is required from me for you or anyone to use it. I will be uploading that picture back soon. ] (]) 19:46, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
::::: I understand multi-tasking, I'm trying to do so at the moment, and probably under performing. My comment wasn't intended to be critical, I simply didn't understand your point, so appreciate your rewording. As for the first issue, as you agree one of the images is a screenshot, not yours, you understand why it is not allowed, I hope. One detail, your link goes to the Misplaced Pages Upload Wizard, so I am not entirely sure to which image you refer. As for the NatalieStewart.jpg image, well, copyright is a tricky area. You are incorrect to say it is not copyrighted. It most certainly is if it was taken almost anywhere in the world (not sure if there are any exceptions). You might mean that you are willing to release it into the public domain, and many people will casually say material in the public domain does not have a copyright, but it is more accurate to say that public domain is a form of license of the material. If you have released it into the public domain, then we are grateful, but we need a permission statement. No offense intended, but every single day people upload photos they claim they took. In some cases, typically in the case of poor quality photos not published anywhere else, some are willing to accept the word of an editor, but when a photo has been published elsewhere, and is of decent quality, we like to have a permission statement on file. We want to protect the rights of copyright holders.--]] 20:13, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
::::::Okay. I understand and apologize if I offended you also. Although this is no excuse, there have been wikipedia users that have been aggravating me and following my everyday edits, which really annoys me. Unless otherwise stated, most of my pictures are uploaded under a Creative Commons license not public domain. But I will try to do better with this in the future. Sometimes choosing between different licenses can be confusing. ] (]) 20:30, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

Copyright issue?
If you are coming to open a discussion with me because I reverted an edit of yours as a copyright issue, please make sure your post includes a link to the article in question - not just the name of the article, a link. Then read the following:
I typically use an edit summary with "copyright issue re URL", or "cv URL". The URL identifies source material that matches your edit too closely.
Copy Within Misplaced Pages If you added material to an article which came from an existing article in Misplaced Pages, it is highly likely that this will be flagged as a potential copyright violation in our CopyPatrol software.
If you followed the best practices at Misplaced Pages:Copying_within_Wikipedia, you left an edit summary indicating the source, I will mark it as acceptable, and you are probably not reading this message.
Other issues There are other reasons why your edit may have been reverted in error. I do a lot of reviews of flagged issues. In 1 to 2% of the cases, I do make a mistake and I'm happy to rectify it. Some sources of errors:
- Source page which has a full copyright notice at the bottom of the page but material within the page is properly licensed. Sometimes that license is buried in the page and sometimes on a separate page.
- Source material that is public domain but not clearly identified as such.
- Source material that is properly licensed but I somehow failed to notice the license

Copyright violations on Chartered Institutes for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity
https://en.wikipedia.org/Draft:Chartered_Institute_for_the_Management_of_Sport_and_Physical_Activity
Thank you for flagging the copyright violation. I agree with the removal. However, there was other content that was removed that did not come from the website you flagged. This included infobox additions, a new section, and other text in the introduction not related to the vision/mission paragraphs.
I have reintroduced these elements onto the page. I will leave mission/vision absent.
COI on my profile. Happy to add elsewhere if needed.

- While it may not seem like the right thing to do, it is convention, when identifying a copyright issue, to do a rollback, which sometimes picks up other copyright issues and sometimes picks up inrelated,a nd non-problematic issues. You are always welcome to restore the non-copyright issue edits.

Invitation to participate in a research
Hello,
The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Misplaced Pages, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.
You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.
The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .
Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Draft:2010 Albert Lea tornado
Just to let you know, the "all-caps" material was from the National Weather Service (see source linked at bottom), I was rewriting it, since an exact copy of the NWS isn't very encyclopedic. Source is in the public domain, as well. :) EF 14:57, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- I am aware that the material comes from NOAA which is public domain, but it still needs to be attributed, and unless there is a very good reason , all-caps isn't acceptable. S Philbrick(Talk) 15:01, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- Well, that's just how they write (see the source). I guess I should have cited it, but I don't have a tool that just "de-caps" everything. Anyways, that's off the point. Since the device I write with is too smll to comfortably do the "double-window" thing with, I just paste the PD material (whether it's caps or not) into the draft, rewrite it, and then delete it. EF 15:03, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
Draft: Daniel P. McCoy
You deleted my draft for Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy's page due to "Copyright Infringement" can you please explain the error so I can remedy it? I am new to Misplaced Pages so I understand that I may have formatted it wrong. However, please be aware that I am a representative of his office and have permission to use his official bio and photos from our website. Kevin.albany (talk) 14:22, 26 November 2024 (UTC)
- It is not a question of format.
- The issue is that this page: Dan McCoy bio is fully copyrighted unless acceptably licensed for use in Misplaced Pages.
- You almost certainly other person you claim to be but we don't know that officially, and we can't take you word for it.
- There is a process for providing a license for that site so that it can be used by Misplaced Pages.
- There is a link:
- See WP:COI
- For going that route, please be aware that if you are a representative of his office then you have a conflict of interest issue and should not be editing a page about him.
- Sorry for the bureaucracy but it's necessary.
- Here's a link to a page specifically designed for new editors to ask questions. Misplaced Pages:Teahouse
- I urge you to post there, explain your position relative to Daniel McCoy, and I am fairly certain you will get advice that discourages you from writing such an article. That's without even addressing the question of copyright. S Philbrick(Talk) 15:59, 26 November 2024 (UTC)
Draft:Tom D. O'Malley - draft versus sanbox
Hello Sphilbrick - I have a quick question regarding the best location on wiki to develop draft articles.
The sandbox does not appear to be bot-patrolled (please disabuse me if this is wrong).
I have run into similar issues when I bring in a large new article from MS Word all at once and save before the citations have been completed (in draft mode). Should all of this work be done in the sandbox versus the draft space? This seems a bit counterintuitive to me. thank you
here is the link: https://en.wikipedia.org/Draft:Tom_D._O%27Malley
Refineryguycanada (talk) 18:23, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
- I believe the sandbox is patrolled.
- Material in draft space and in sandbox space doesn't have to fully meet final editing standards such as formatting or even complete citations, but it can never ever have copyrighted text other than the obvious exceptions (short excerpts as block quotes or within quotation marks) S Philbrick(Talk) 20:35, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
- Ok - thanks for the heads up. Refineryguycanada (talk) 17:43, 28 November 2024 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – December 2024
News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2024).
Interface administrator changes
- Following an RFC, the policy on restoration of adminship has been updated. All former administrators may now only regain the tools following a request at the Misplaced Pages:Bureaucrats' noticeboard within 5 years of their most recent admin action. Previously this applied only to administrators deysopped for inactivity.
- Following a request for comment, a new speedy deletion criterion, T5, has been enacted. This applies to template subpages that are no longer used.
- Technical volunteers can now register for the 2025 Wikimedia Hackathon, which will take place in Istanbul, Turkey. Application for travel and accommodation scholarships is open from November 12 to December 10, 2024.
- The arbitration case Yasuke (formerly titled Backlash to diversity and inclusion) has been closed.
- An arbitration case titled Palestine-Israel articles 5 has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case will close on 14 December.

Deleted without courtesy warning.
Please revert the deletion of draft article at Draft:The-Corruption-of-economics and let me delete the the copyright offensive material. This is going to be my first article.
I did not realise that a public description of a book on Amazon is subject to copyright.
Thank you,
Janos Abel Janosabel (talk) 21:31, 7 December 2024 (UTC)
- With rare exceptions, everything you add to an article should be in your own words.
- My recollection is that there was not much of value beyond the copyrighted material in the draft article I deleted so I'm declining to restore it. S Philbrick(Talk) 22:02, 7 December 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for the explanation.
- So is there no way to write an article now for that book?
- Harsh regime to enforce. I was not allowed to correct an error due to misunderstanding or insufficient competency.
- There is plenty of value and noteworthiness I can put into that article during the weeks to come. Janosabel (talk) 23:03, 7 December 2024 (UTC)
- I decided to take a second look on the chance that I misremembered the contents. Here's the entire contents of the article excluding the copyrighted portion:
- A book by Fred Harrison and Mason Gaffney edition published in 2023 by Shepheard-Walwyn. S Philbrick(Talk) 00:11, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for this second chance. Teaches me to be more careful about rules. Janosabel (talk) 17:25, 9 December 2024 (UTC)

Lake Pape
As a new wikipedia editor, I am guaranteed to mess up, and I would appreciate some advise on adding information and sources to stubs or any article as I am not sure what is against the copyright rules. On the Lake Pape article you reversed my additions but I am not sure why it broke copyright rules, thank you for understanding my good intentions. BigBlobfish (talk) 00:01, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for asking so politely. I'm sure it can be jarring when you're trying to make good faith improvements to an article and find they been removed.
- Look at your first sentence of the biodiversity section:
- Lake Pape is rich in organic matter and is classed as a mesotrophic lake on the Trophic state index.
- Now check out this site and look at the first sentence of the biodiversity section:
- Lake Pape is rich in organic matter - a mesotrophic lake.
- That sentence is a close call, and had it simply been that sentence I would've let it go. However, look at your second sentence:
- There are sharp-leaf plants growing on the shores and bays of the lake.
- And now the second sentence of the site:
- There are sharp-leaf plants growing on the shores and bays of the lake.
- There are several additional sentences, some identical, some close paraphrases.
- The next issue is whether the source issue is acceptably licensed so that it could be used (with attribution course)
- Many sites include a footer with the copyright status of the site. In this case, there is no such indication at the bottom of the page, nor is there at the bottom of the main page.
- The site appears to be associated with the country Latvia. While I have not memorized the copyright laws in every country, many countries are part of the Berne Convention. Latvia has been a signatory since 1995. See also Latvia The Berne Convention states that material is automatically subject to copyright as opposed to requiring a specific indication. (This is a casual summary. ) If you have information suggesting that this site is public domain, please let me know. S Philbrick(Talk) 13:26, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for such a kind response. But does this mean I can't use the information from the site or does this mean I just have to write in my own words? BigBlobfish (talk) 13:39, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
- You can use the information, in fact you should use it as a reference, but you should write it in your own words. I urge you to read close paraphrase. Good luck, and thanks for your interest in contributing. S Philbrick(Talk) 13:44, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for the assistance and support! BigBlobfish (talk) 13:47, 22 December 2024 (UTC)

Good practice is not to copy a sentence and then try to change it, but read the whole site and ideally some other relevant site, and then write your own summary. When done, take a look at the original source on the chance your memory is so good you managed to largely reproduce it. Good luck, and thanks for your interest in contributing. S Philbrick(Talk) 13:44, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for such a kind response. But does this mean I can't use the information from the site or does this mean I just have to write in my own words? BigBlobfish (talk) 13:39, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
What's the point of contributing?
I just edited Bedinvetmab to add the MOA which is missing. I pulled the info from the manufacturers prescribing information - i.e. the primary source and my edit was removed because of copyright violations? This is my first contribution to Misplaced Pages and based on this experience likely my last. Diegoarey (talk) 17:58, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
- I hope you will reconsider.
- The early edits of many new contributors arise because they read an article, realize some important information is missing, go out and find that information and add that information copying and pasting from the original source, not realizing that this is almost always a violation of copyright policy.
- Contributing to Misplaced Pages is a little bit harder than some realize, because it means you have to write the information in your own words (with some rare exceptions such as identified short quotes, and material from some public domain sources.)
- We want material added to Misplaced Pages articles to be reliable and while it might seem obvious that the words written by the actual manufacturer would be the best source, that's not necessarily the case. Manufacturers have a potential conflict of interest. One hopes they write factually and unbiased but one can't be sure, which is why we like to support additions to articles with citations to reliable sources that is places that have a reputation for being unbiased.
- You asked about the point of contributing. The point is that when done correctly, Misplaced Pages can serve as a source of information which is as free of bias is we as a community can manage. All done by volunteers and free to the public. S Philbrick(Talk) 18:11, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
- Makes sense on one hand, on the other hand, if the point is to fact check because "while it might seem obvious that the words written by the actual manufacturer would be the best source, that's not necessarily the case. Manufacturers have a potential conflict of interest." then I would have expected the community to edit what I wrote if it's factually incorrect rather than delete it. Diegoarey (talk) 18:18, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
- There are two issues which relate to two of the five pillers of Misplaced Pages. Misplaced Pages:Five_pillars
- The second pillar:
- Misplaced Pages is written from a neutral point of view
- Is why we have concerns about accepting material from the manufacturer without question.
- The second issue relates to the third pillar:
- Misplaced Pages is free content that anyone can use, edit, and distribute
- That means we need to "respect copyright laws and never plagiarize from any sources". S Philbrick(Talk) 18:48, 23 December 2024 (UTC)

Your revert at Kasaya_(clothing)
Your revert reinstated numerous errors. Why?
- I left you a message there on Talk, where your reasons for your unsupported revert should have been noted.
- I provided a reliable source for the simplest corrections of the original history of Buddhist robes, when the numerous errors were completely unsourced, those multiple errors your revert reinstated - on New Year's Eve, of all inappropriate times.

Courland Uprising
Hello. You deleted my edits on Draft:Courland Uprising, destroying my hard work. I would like to politely ask you to send me text you deleted, so I can rewritte it and get back to working on my article :) I know that your bot flagged it as "copywritted", but it was just a quote from a newspaper, I pasted so I could use its informations in the article. It obviously wasn't intended to be in the final version. Artemis Andromeda (talk) 22:24, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
- I'm puzzled that you say it was "just a quote from a newspaper". That's exactly what is meant by violation of copyright rules. It is permitted to use short quotes if enclosed in quotation marks or set off as a block quote and if they are properly sourced neither of which apply here.
- You seem to be under the impression that it's okay to have copyrighted material in a draft. It is not. It's never a good practice to start with copyrighted material and massage it but if you must, do it in an off-line editor.
- My reversion may have picked up otherwise acceptable edits because it's standard practice to revert all consecutive edits by the same editor. I can send you the material but you need to turn on your email option in your preferences so that I can send it to you via email. Alternatively, and more easily for you, I turned off the code which hides the edits so you can recover the edits yourself. Let me know when you are done so I can turn back on the revision deletion code. S Philbrick(Talk) 00:54, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
Issue Regarding Khawaspur Page
Hii @Sphilbrick , Thanks for letting me about my mistakes regarding Copyright issue. i should repharse it on my own words. i will surely keep in mind for further editing in future. Apart from this , This khawaspur page is totally mistaken to Pakistan which is totally wrong. there is nothing like khawaspur village or Ropur district in Pakistan. Also there is no any citation in page that support it a village in Pakistan. Only one citation is there which say it's in India. Also i checked all contribution history also , editors also claim that this page has many mistakes. So allow me to do a revision of this whole page. i surely will provide a reputable citation for it. I will again keep in mind about copyright issues matter.

- Thanks for replying. Callmehelper (talk) 20:22, 4 January 2025 (UTC)
- Go for it. I agree, it seems clear it is in India, so a complete overhaul is warranted. S Philbrick(Talk) 22:14, 4 January 2025 (UTC)
Administrators' newsletter – January 2025
News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2024).
- Following an RFC, Misplaced Pages:Notability (species) was adopted as a subject-specific notability guideline.
- A request for comment is open to discuss whether admins should be advised to warn users rather than issue no-warning blocks to those who have posted promotional content outside of article space.
- The Nuke feature also now provides links to the userpage of the user whose pages were deleted, and to the pages which were not selected for deletion, after page deletions are queued. This enables easier follow-up admin-actions.
- Following the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been elected to the Arbitration Committee: CaptainEek, Daniel, Elli, KrakatoaKatie, Liz, Primefac, ScottishFinnishRadish, Theleekycauldron, Worm That Turned.
- A New Pages Patrol backlog drive is happening in January 2025 to reduce the number of unreviewed articles and redirects in the new pages feed. Sign up here to participate!

Mischgerät (V-2 guidance computer) Copyright Reversion
For the article Mischgerät (V-2 guidance computer) at URL "https://en.wikipedia.org/Mischgerät_(V-2_guidance_computer)":
On 20:14, 7 January 2025, you had noted "Copyright issue re https://engineering.stackexchange.com/questions/49950/is-there-a-schematic-of-hoeltzers-mischger%c3%a4t-v2-a4-electronic-guidance-computer/50286"
First off, my bad, in that I 1) was using the Misplaced Pages entry as a text editor for the draft, rather than my sandbox, and 2) didn't promptly add cites.
I'm the author for the referenced StackExchange question and accepted answer. As I noted on that platform, I machine translated and lightly edited some German language passages from the document "Das Gerät A4 Baureihe B Gerätbeschreibung", downloaded originally from http://www.aggregat4.de/pdf/Gerätebeschreibung_A4.pdf, but since then from https://archive.org/download/technicaldescriptionA4/Gerätebeschreibung_A4_text.pdf
Based on my understanding of German copyright law I've gathered within Misplaced Pages regarding Public Domain material, I believe the material in the source PDF is PD in both Germany and the US, based on a lack of a named author, and that it was published a few days short of 80 years ago.
While the very lightly edited machine translation was adequate for my purposes on StackExchange, it needs a complete rewrite in my own words for easier comprehension on Misplaced Pages, which was what I was in the midst of.
Was the copyright issue due to similarity with the StackExchange entry, or status of the source document? If the former, it would be helpful - but not critical - to retrieve my draft of the "Operation" section of the "Mischgerät" article.
If the latter, I'd appreciate guidance on how best to "adjudicate" what would apparently be differing opinions on whether I'm working with PD material or not. Cmholm (talk) 23:30, 8 January 2025 (UTC)
- I didn't notice that it was that old which would make it PD. I believe SR copyright notice on the page but that might not have applied to the material in question.
- I see that you've had a number of consecutive edits and have edited after I did the reversion so it's not perfectly clear how best to proceed.
- The simplest approach (admittedly for me) is for me to say I'm sorry I missed the underlying material was PD, and let you recover as best you can. Alternatively I can undo my reversion but I think that will mess up edits you've made subsequent to my reversion. S Philbrick(Talk) 23:54, 8 January 2025 (UTC)
- In anticipation that reversion would make a mess, I've backed up my current work off-line. If you're willing to undo the revision, I'll copy that to an off-line source and paste the current work back in. Cmholm (talk) 00:11, 9 January 2025 (UTC)
- I've restored it to the version before my reversion. S Philbrick(Talk) 12:31, 9 January 2025 (UTC)

- Reviewing other copyright pleas on this page, I now realize I should have been drafting articles off-line from the get-go, rather than piling up my references and just jumping in. Cmholm (talk) 00:09, 9 January 2025 (UTC)
- I applaud you for your initiative to read other examples of editors involved in copyright issues.
- I agree that working off-line is considered a best practice, but we also have a guideline urging you to Misplaced Pages:Bold
- Don't feel that you have to do all of your work off-line. Ideally, after any edit, the article should stand on its own. In the early years of Misplaced Pages some people used to put up "under construction" templates to indicate that an article was in the process of transformation but that practice is less common today.
