== How we will see unregistered users ==
==Not trying to vandallize==

<section begin=content/>
Please help. I can't log in. My user page seems intact. You can reply there if you prefer. I could probably create a new account, but I'd like to keep my name and edits, and the info on my userpage. I keep getting a message that I might need to enable cookies, but I've been through the menu, and that option doesn't appear available (nor to disable them).
Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
:Which browser are you using? What exactly happens when you enter username and password at ]? If you get an error message then please copy it. ] (]) 21:24, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
::I typed you a long message, and managed to delete it, so this time, I'm posting it in stages.
::The error message now reads: "Incorrect password or confirmation code entered. Please try again." I believe it was longer yesterday, but ...

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin '''will still be able to access the IP'''. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on ] to help.
::I'm sure the browser info is here somewhere:
::"Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.1-update 1; en-us; M860 build/ERE27) /AppleWebKit/530.17 (KHTML, like Gecko) version/4.0 Mobile Safari/530.17".

If you have not seen it before, you can ]. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can ] to ].
::I'm now fairly sure that cookies are enabled. It's been months since I logged in: March, I think, and I may have changed my password to strengthen it. In that case, I think I'm in trouble. I seem to remember reading on one of the pages that WP doesn't recover passwords.
:::NOW I'm getting the message I saw yesterday:
"There was an unexpected error logging in. Please try again. If the problem persists, it may be because you have cookies disabled, and you should check that they are enabled in your browser settings."
:::Should it tell me something when I get different messages on different log-in attempts?
:::Thanks for any light you can shed.

We have ] this identity could work. '''We would appreciate your feedback''' on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can ]. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
:::Your account has email enabled. If you can still receive mails at the stored address then you can request a new password at ]. The old password will continue to work. I have Windows and four browsers but not Safari. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Safari/3.0/en/9277.html may help if it's really a cookie problem. Can you try logging in from another browser or computer? If it works elsewhere then it sounds more likely to be a cookie problem in your browser as the most frequent message says. ] (]) 00:28, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
::::Thanks again! I'll let you know.
] (]) 01:14, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
:::::Well, I'm finally logged on! I have been trying to log on for MONTHS! Some of you may have figured out that I was doing my editing while not logged in. I've been using a handheld device with a Safari browser, and I'm still not sure what the problem was (I had forgotten my password, to complicate matters). I may only be able to log on at the library for a while, but the strangest thing is that I can log on to Species.Wikimedia, Wiktionary, and Commons on the handheld, but not onto enWikipedia. I will attempt to load another browser on the handheld (Huawei M860), if support says it's possible. I'm reading in the news that some of the Safari browsers reject cookies by default. I have changed the settings numerous times to "accept," but the way it jumps when I try to log on, not letting me input the password sometimes at all, or not letting me hit "submit" before leaving the page, makes me suspect a software or hardware problem in·compatibility. Anyway, I'm not gone, just inhibited. I'll figure it out.
:::::Thank you for your help, here, and at the Help Desk. I suspect that back last year, when I changed my password, I started the process of changing email address, but never acknowledged the confirmation email at the "new" email box, probably because I lost access about that time. I found the "confirm" link, but it was a year old, and I think they're only good for a week or so. I requested a password link several times, butI never received a link at either box until I requested one from another project, so I guess I kind slipped in the back door. Once I changed my password on another Wikiproject, with universal login, it eventually changed here as well. Maybe a strategy for someone else, if the same convoluted situation arises.
:::::] (]) 01:00, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
::::::When I received an email from another wikiproject, I immediately made contact and requested password assistance. I can now log on everywhere except enWP, where I still receive "unexpected login error encountered..." OrangeMike linked me to the RefDesk/Computing, where I'm leaving all the particulars. Cookies are definitely enabled, but I still suspect the browser.

A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community ], where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

#Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

== Opinion requested on use of freeware-program example for game of ] ==

Do you think I'm ready to ask for a review?
Hi, PrimeHunter. This is Julzes (on machine with antiquated browser). I am considering using an example of a game on the article in title here, and feel that rather than trying to select a specific noteworthy game in human play a game simply of WZebra, a freeware program of quite high quality (I have no association with its author, if that is of any import for a freeware program), playing itself might permit the most ideal discussion. Do you see where I might expect serious objections to this idea? I should 'be myself' tomorrow at the college library. Thanks for your reply. "I have no idea" would be perfectly reasonable if that is the case for your best answer; you just are still the most natural person for me to ask just about anything because I really have not spent a lot of time editing yet.] (]) 02:58, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

:I'm not sure what you want to do. Do you want to add all moves of a software-played Reversi game to the article ], and then discuss the moves made by the software? That would be inappropriate for a Misplaced Pages article. ] may also be relevant depending exactly what you want. ] (]) 03:09, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

~~~~ ] (]) 03:36, 12 July 2022 (UTC)
Well, the primary ideas involved were to illustrate A) Both of the two acceptable means of recording games and B) In a clear way why/how computer Reversi/Othello play is relatively stronger versus humans than is generally (or has been, at least) the case for games; but there was the intention of lightly connecting the specific game to each of the sub-sections in Strategic Elements. Is the objection that you have or believe others would have that the game would be generated by software (and so might be construed as promoting author or some version not available for free)? I also intend to include an old quote by a former tournament player of some note to the effect that the game essentially lacks a middlegame (disputable, but with some sense at the highest level of play), along with remarks that a 10x10 version is available and would almost certainly be needed if the game were of the order of popularity of chess. An illustrative game--either from a human world championship game or per my idea--could serve an auxiliary role for the (intended to be brief) discussion of this particular matter. The intention generally is not to provide a full accounting for people who want to be proficient in the game--something that arguably is being done to a fair degree with chess opening articles here--but basically just to make the subject relatively clearer and a bit more complete (by virtue of increased clarity and also in other ways). The objective on the whole is to provide visual as well as verbal information.] (]) 20:19, 25 March 2012 (UTC)
== Vandalism ==
:It sounds like ] to me if you base an article on your own run of a program and you draw conclusions from the actions of the program. I don't know whether you have access to reliable published sources about Reversi games but that would be better. You might make up individual positions or take it from a software game to illustrate a published point about positions similar to that, but a whole game seems like too much for me. Some of what you want to do also sounds more like something for ]. ] (]) 23:37, 25 March 2012 (UTC)
Well, I am not in a rush to do whatever it is I had in mind. It is probably not all that important--or would not be--to 99% of people who would want to know the material to be able to find it here. I don't think what I was planning to do was OR, formally. I may not have been too clear on that. I had no plans to draw conclusions from the run, just to illustrate conclusions already out there, to the extent that part was to be about the specific game rather than mere illustration of any old game with its notation. I do have article material, plenty. Just nothing terribly recent at home, and I did not want to relatively over-focus on any one or two people's play (though the quote I wish to use is, of course, by a person). I don't know the purpose of existence of ], to be frank. I believe that was started by somebody wanting to make a sale. Anything on artificial intelligence focused on Othello/Reversi does not need to be said in an article on it. What is there to say other than it is easy to start research on it and it is/was popular to do, as opposed to games with more complicated rule-sets? I don't know (and perhaps I am wrong).] (]) 00:02, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
== Request for a 3rd Opinion ==
:Thanks! ] (]) 23:37, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
Hello, I have had rather poor interactions with an editor on the following article; https://en.wikipedia.org/List_of_data_recovery_companies
== Brilliant numbers ==
The user and I had a brief conversation on my IP page before I created my account; https://en.wikipedia.org/User_talk:173.160.59.125
Hi, Jens. I just familiarized myself with this term/concept (that I had heard of previously) through Dario Alperin's website. Noting that there is no article here, I wanted your opinion as to notability before contemplating adding one. Thanks. Also, if you have run across any restrictions or generalizations, I would be interested (regardless of wikipedia notability). Things like '...for any base from 2 through 10,...' or '...for all bases 2 through 10, ...' (the latter being extremely restrictive, of course). ] (]) 11:44, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
As the guidelines suggest, I attempted to reach resolution, but the editor refuses to engage in any productive discussion and simply reverts any edit to the page, without contributing to the Talk page I started to help resolve this dispute.
:They appear to fail 1 and 2 at ] so an article might be nominated for deletion. A search on "brilliant numbers" at OEIS or Prime Curios! gives many related sequences and results. It's easy to be brilliant in many bases when the prime factors are closely together. The square of a prime is brilliant in all bases. One of my interests for sequences is terms as closely together as possible, excluding abnormal cases like the four even brilliant numbers. ] is brilliant "twins" (n, n+2). A quick search shows that 9472781 starts a brilliant quadruplet n + {0, 2, 6, 8}. ] (]) 13:49, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
While I understand that Misplaced Pages is not an advertising platform, we are not attempting to do any form of advertising. I am simply trying to add our company to a list in which it belongs - and I've read through the guidelines quite thoroughly to ensure there is no breach, and believe we are right to be included in the list. A 3rd opinion would be greatly appreciated to help settle the matter, as I am concerned this is becoming an edit war, and I have no interest in such activity.
Okay, so I won't write unless you lean toward thinking it has around a 50% shot of non-deletion. The scarcity remark I made was so wrong because I was thinking not of brilliant numbers but of semiprimes with factor-lengths differing by 1. Yes, would be common to have brilliant numbers in many bases. Not thinking clearly on definition. Thanks. Btw, really annoyed not to have a computer working at home. Will never buy from that particular manufacturer again for more than just that reason (power button, most likely)!] (]) 15:57, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
Thank you,
:If you do a Google search and cite several sources, including more than one OEIS sequence and at least one Prime Curios entry, then I guess an article would have above 50% chance of staying. Editors tend to require less notability for math than some other topics. I wouldn't say delete if I saw a deletion nomination but I would have to see the article before saying whether I would abstain or say keep. ] (]) 16:25, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
:{{ping|Davoguha}} We have a process for this: ]. Note that it requires a brief neutral description of the dispute. ] (]) 00:58, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
::Thank you, PrimeHunter - I opted not to add to that section, as it requests that a situation be thoroughly discussed on a talk page before making a request. I noted another page mentioned to "avoid the drama" by reaching out directly to an admin. Unfortunately, the editor in question has refused to contribute to the talk page, and simply responds to anything I do by calling it "spam", and claiming I am breaking rules - and has expressed no interest in resolution, simply proclaiming themselves "right". Primarily, the point of debate is whether or not a company can/should be added to a list page, without their own Wiki article existing - and if they can/should, then how it should be added to said list (Externally linked? No linking?). I appreciate your time, thank you. ] (]) 21:33, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
Hello hello. I hope this message finds you well.
I have noted that the coiner of the term ''brilliant number'' is actually Danish, but so far have not established his own notability beyond this. I am a little unclear on how I should represent him in my article beyond 'a man named Peter Wallrodt', so if you could provide an appropriate modifying phrase I might use for his activities (his employer, general line of work or notable activity area of any sort--as publicly available), it might be very helpful (My language proficiency does not extend much further than English at present, unfortunately). Also, it would be a good thing for wikipedia to provide an option to move an article in creation to the sandbox for editors. On occasion, this might be useful in not creating a frustrated editor who has found that he or she does not have time to create a finished work (I expect to have the article done well enough soon, but it is causing a minor fear I will have wasted some effort).] (]) 03:25, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
The Wikimedia Foundation Inc. Board of Trustees election ends soon, ''']'''. At least one of ] is worthy of support. --] (]) 14:50, 5 September 2022 (UTC)
:I don't know anything about Peter Wallrodt but Wallrodt is not a Danish name. A search found a German Peter Wallrodt at http://www.nachhilfe-gruenstadt.de/html/unser_team.html but I haven't confirmed it's him. If you saw a ] language code then that's Germany (Deutschland). ] is Denmark. 'a man named Peter Wallrodt' sounds odd. Peter is a common male name. You can just say 'Peter Wallrodt'. I'm not sure what your move concern is but see ]. You can work on a draft in a user subpage, for example ] which should be linked on "My sandbox" at the top of all pages, or ]. You can also use <nowiki>{{subst:AFC submission/draftnew}}</nowiki> at top of ] to say it's a draft and should not be reviewed yet. Hi. There has been no serious discussion on the talk page suggesting or hinting that the Prize in Economics should be in the infobox. Repeated reverts by accounts- without a word of commentary, which do not engage in discussion or the talk page- those do not deserve any more than a quick use of the undo button just as they are doing to my edits. My edit was careful and thoughtful and preserved the relationship of the Prize in Economics prominently in the head of the article. If people are interested in that prize, they are welcome to read about it. But it is "Not a Nobel Prize", and editors repeatedly removing that comment from the article are doing a disservice and encouraging the spread of misinformation.
Firstly, I really appreciated your help at the Help page. Thanks so much. However, I wonder if I may bother you for some technical advice. May I? Hope so.
Hi, would you be able to help with ]? ] (]) 01:29, 13 December 2022 (UTC)
All the skins I have tried (including Chic) are problematic: they all make my pages appear very cluttered (excepting Chic, which has the problem of garbling some of the text, due to, I think, the typeface it uses. That is, it smushes text together in odd places, thus displaying words with the letters all on top of eachother). But I don't want to ask you about Chic: I wonder if you know how I can go back to MySkin, which worked perfectly well up until about 3 days ago, when all of a sudden all of my red links turned to blue. Can adding something from the page you suggested I read (]) to my ] change them back to red? The Misplaced Pages:Link color page was very confusing for me, as I am not very computer literate, and this page seems to assume a lot of pre-knowledge about computer language. I am willing to try to learn how to do it, if you are willing to try to teach me (at least enough to fix this). I did try clearing my cache, and logging on and off, first, before changing the skin. I also tried to edit ] and ] (only showing previews - no saving) and the text from Misplaced Pages:Link color just looked like, well, text. Obviously I am missing something.
== Duplicate redirects ==
The other thing I wonder is, why'd this happen in the first place!? Why did it all of a sudden change like that on its own?? Am I the only one this has happened to? I don't assume you would know, but maybe you have some insights that I don't have. I can't find an example (doing searches on Misplaced Pages) of anyone else having this problem.
Can you look at ] and ]. They look identical, but are not. There some hidden character in the "Of" in the first one. Microsoft Word detects it as a misspelling. I was going to CSD it, but that would probably be too confusing. Can you just delete it. Thanks. ] 02:53, 28 December 2022 (UTC)
Don't mean to be a pest. If you don't have the answers, that's alright. I just find this all so disconcerting. I am left with just asking 'Why'?
Regarding visited red-links and visited created articles, I'm getting the same thing. I will experiment with it and see what I can find. But that is much less of an issue for my uses: I add lists of already-created plant species articles to my watch list, and when I save it, it always shows both the article name, and its corresponding talk page; when a talk page is a red-link, I know that it still needs one. By this process I have added hundreds of talk pages, in which case they are now more visible to plants editors who otherwise may have overlooked them for who-knows-how long. But, it would be nice have a color other than purple for both. I'll see what I can come up with. ] (]) 20:32, 26 April 2012 (UTC)
==Question about Misplaced Pages's most viewed page==
:{{ping|Blaze Wolf}} I did it ] without prior discussion. We normally don't make external links in the body of articles but it's often different when a whole list is based on the same official source which has a page about each entry. See e.g. ] (there are thousands of such lists), ], ] (around 2500 links on this page alone), ] ("Report" link for every match), ] (whole "Ref" column is external links). The Pokedex links work both as references and additional information, e.g. an image of the Pokemon. I think they are helpful to both readers and editors, and I don't think readers will be surprised by where they go. It would be possible to make inline references instead but it would just create around 100 nearly identical references per list and an extra step to reach the target from the tables. ] (]) 03:37, 28 February 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for your message and thank you, especially, for taking the time to remove all the pesky "small talk". I only added those because the last column needs to contain longer text (whole sentences/paragraphs) and it appeared the same width as the column with the dates. I'm sure there is a much better way of fixing it (column width parameters or summat?), but I'm not at all technically minded, so the small text it seemed a simple option, if time-consuming...
I hope to be able to answer all your questions in one go, not necessarily in chronological order, but if I leave something out, please don't hesitate to get back to me on it...
Many thanks for your responses here - all appreciated. ] (]) 23:24, 26 April 2012 (UTC)
As I mentioned in my edit summary for the split, the page just seemed to be getting way too unwieldy —even for someone (yours truly) who knows, at least in theory, where everything is— and I was concerned that any reader coming to it cold would just find it too cumbersome. That said, the point you make about closely connected info being spread out over two pages did worry me'''*''' but in debating the split —with myself'''**'''— I reckoned that anyone who was sufficiently interested in the subject matter would also be willing to follow the whole chain of events, as well as going off on the inevitable tangents that them there marvellous wikilinks afford us.
== A barnstar for you! ==
'''<nowiki>*</nowiki>''' Indeed, I'm beginning to think that I was being too optimist in splitting it into just the two pages, because, in answer to that question, yes! I do have in mind a "huge expansion"...<br>
{| style="background-color: #fdffe7; border: 1px solid #fceb92;"
'''<nowiki>**</nowiki>''' No, I did not discuss it anywhere because I wasn't really sure where to do so; the corresponding talk page didn't seem to be the right place 'cos there ain't nothin' happening there... And as the whole thing really was getting too unwieldy for me to edit —even though I'm fortunate to use a device with fully updated software, etc.— I figured it would be better to simply split the content into rough periods of time.
Regarding the extension, I sort of based my rationale on ] (in particular, ] and, to a lesser extent —no pun intended— eventual technical issues, ]).
:Thanks! ] (]) 14:11, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
I did consider adding a year index and year rows like the ones in the example you provided, but that format only permits sorting within each section, which defeats the object of searching for sortable content on the whole page —something I consider essential, ie sorting by Spanish, French, British, Anglo-Portuguese victories, etc. (at least those on the same page/year range).
Regarding your suggestion of undoing the split, obviously if it's your considered opinion that that would be preferable, I would bow to your superior technical knowledge. I have no intention of making a stand on this issue. And I fully agree that it would be prefereable to have all the content on one single page/in one single, sortable table. Would it be possible to undo it with your admin buttons without losing all the content I've added since the split?
== Strange table placement on ] ==
::Greetings again, PrimeHunter.
Unless it is a defect unique to the computer I am on, the Championship table in this article is appearing in the wrong place. From a superficial look at how it is edited, it looks as though it should be in the right place, but I have it (aside from the asterisk on the Monte Carlo tournament) all immediately following 'External Links'. It should be an easy fix (I think), but I don't know what is wrong with the coding/writing (and perhaps it is just something wrong on this end). I'd appreciate a fix or instructions on how I might do it.] (]) 15:37, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
::Having gone over what you commented, think I understand it better now. When I referred to the system you recommend not being sortable as a whole it was because of all those empty rows in that carrier table (which take up more than a whole screen when clicking on "Navy"!). Am I correct in understanding from what you say that you can write code to prevent that happening (or is it a necessary evil of sortable tables of that length)?
::BTW, when I asked you about whether it would be possible to undo the split "without losing all the content I've added", I wasn't thinking of attribution at all (at least not for me), merely the amount of content that I'd added since the split. When I first started editing at Wp I thought the whole idea of having a username was childish (I still do, but...) and that the true spirit of the project meant editing anonymously as an IP, which I did, intensively, for a couple of years, until a couple of old-timer admins convinced me that it would be more useful to the project as a whole if I registered as a user (eventually leading to rollback rights, etc., which in those days had to be requested).
:I have fixed it by closing the table. ] (]) 21:26, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. Sorry to have had to bother you with that, but neither of the ways I have thought of to remedy the problem on my own--finding what was different from the edit at the time prior to the vandalism I had just fixed or looking at how a table that was correct on a different page was edited differently--occurred to me until this morning, and I did assume it was something pretty simple.] (]) 12:12, 14 May 2012 (UTC) ::So, the bottom line is that I have no objection to you organising the sortable table in the best interest of users. As a result of some email exchanges via OTRS, I ended up making an edit to ] to add a reference. The question I received is whether that link is a "no-follow" link. I have only the vaguest notion of what this means, and my quick search turned up nothing helpful. Can you fill me in, ideally, both generally on what the term means, and specifically, whether the answer is yes or no for this reference. {| style="border: 1px solid gray; background-color: #fdffe7;"
:Yes, all external links in Misplaced Pages are nofollow. See ] and ]. Specifically, the html of the rendered article says <code><nowiki><a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="http://www.softwareresearches.net/">"Software Licensing"</a></nowiki></code>. nofollow means that the link does not contribute to the ] of the target in Google, and similar ranking systems in some other search engines. This means that the target does not get higher placement in Google search result pages. Many webmasters, especially at commercial sites, care greatly about their page rank and search engine placement because it affects how many visitors they get. Google may still follow a nofollow link to discover and index the target page if it wasn't already in their database. Some Misplaced Pages mirrors do not set nofollow so with time, an external link in Misplaced Pages may be copied elsewhere and affect the page rank of the target. ] (]) 00:43, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
Twice now somebody has tried to put how-to like programming material in the article. I can understand this in a way; because, while wikipedia is a general encyclopedia, there is no broad cooperative working on a problem that looks like it might bear one, and this may be a frustration to a devotee of the problem (which I am not). As always, if implementing an idea you have which I have requested requires much time, I cannot ask you to spend the time and will merely use your suggestion when I myself have time. Thanks. == Weak Goldbach conjecture ==
Dear Prime Hunter,
</div>
My name is Daniel and I sign here as avijet.It is about the weak Goldbach conjecture, any odd number greater than 7 is the sum of three odd primes. My question is why should 2 be eliminate from it and not considering a more extended range for this conjecture - any odd number greater or equal to 7 is the sum of three primes ? For example 7 = 2+2+3 , 11 = 2+2+7; not including 2 eliminates some of the possible combinations.
Hi, I have the same problem that others had with Book Creator -- I can't create chapter headings and I can't sort the contents of my books. I saw the comment you posted on the Books FAQ linking to Bugzilla and ”Books#Structure,” but I'm not sure if that helps me much. (Bugzilla says the bug is fixed but it still exists for me, at least.) :{{ping|Koavf}} I was clearing ] of around 380 categories with invalid <code><nowiki>{{DISPLAYTITLE:}}</nowiki></code>. It incorrectly said "(season 7)" before so ''30 Rock'' was not italicized in the displayed page name at top of the page. Now it is. For many other shows I fixed many seasons and could use the same <code><nowiki>{{italic title|string=...}}</nowiki></code> on all seasons. I found this approach easier than fiddling with the specific DISPLAYTITLE on every page, and <code><nowiki>{{italic title|string=...}}</nowiki></code> may keep working if a page is moved again. ] (]) 20:09, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
:::{{ping|Koavf}} <code><nowiki>{{italic title|string=...}}</nowiki></code> often keeps working after a page move while <code><nowiki>{{DISPLAYTITLE:}}</nowiki></code> always breaks and many page movers are unaware of DISPLAYTITLE issues. And some people start by copy-pasting code from an existing similar page when creating a new page but fail to change DISPLAYTITLE. A copy-pasted <code><nowiki>{{italic title|string=...}}</nowiki></code> from another article about the same work will usually keep working correctly. I never change a working <code><nowiki>{{DISPLAYTITLE:}}</nowiki></code> but if it's broken then I often use <code><nowiki>{{italic title|string=...}}</nowiki></code> to fix it. :I have another question. I want to have a template, e.g., <nowiki>{{MEDRS evaluation|evidence=review|human=yes|date=2018}}</nowiki> that allows:
:* evidence: for a given list of four or five keywords, return result X; for a given list of 20 keywords, return result Y; for unknown, return the unknown result; if empty, be silent.
:* human: for any true value (y, yes, Y, T, true, 1 – whatever the usual options are), return result X; for any usual false value, return result Y; if empty, be silent.
:* date: If the year given, compared to <nowiki>{{CURRENTYEAR}}</nowiki>, is 5 or less years old, then return result X; if it is 5–10 years old, return result Y; if it is >10 years old, complain; if it is empty, then nag.
:I have been looking through templates trying to find examples of these, and everything's been turned into Lua modules or is part of a multi-template scheme (or both, e.g., infoboxes), so I haven't found any good examples of what I'd like to do. I also haven't found anything in the help pages that says, very simply, "Here's the code if <nowiki>{{{parameter1}}}</nowiki> is ____, and you want it to return this different thing". Hello,
:Yes, that is my experience from testing (I don't have knowledge about the actual code). If both fields are filled then the e-mail address is ignored. If only the e-mail address is filled then the sent e-mail lists all accounts with that address, and gives a separate password for each. If no user has that e-mail address then no mail is sent, but MediaWiki falsely gives the same message: "A reminder e-mail has been sent." I guess the idea is that third parties should not be able to tell whether an e-mail address exists in the database. ] (]) 13:50, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
== Question on CSS ==
Hi, Prime. I'm ], and I have a concern about the way you replied to the fella that asked about common knowledge at Teahouse. We try to be completely positive when we respond to the new users that have questions at Teahouse and your reply was somewhat chastising. I'm sorry you feel that his asking the same question in multiple forums is somehow a problem, but I can certainly see the logic in it. Very few things about Misplaced Pages have a cut and dried "Answer", so by asking in multiple places, he got multiple viewpoints and from that can synthesize a reasonable way to approach his problem that he was asking about. At Teahouse, we assume the editor asking the question is new, and we try to encourage with our answers. He is, after all, a volunteer just like me and you and does not have to be here. We assume that we need him and all new editors. Just remember, his rate of pay is exactly the same as yours. So, although I thank you for your interest, I am asking you to be positive if you are going to answer questions at Teahouse and make sure that you greet the editor when you do. Thanks, and Happy Editing! ] (]) 21:12, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
Hi, Prime Hunter! First, I just wanted to say again thank you so much for the help and advice on ].
:By asking the same question in four different places without saying so at any of them, he makes many people spend their time on the same thing. It seems fairly common sense and courtesy to me not to do that, except maybe if you have waited a reasonable time without getting answers. I first saw the question at ] which had the most detailed answers. I linked it from the three other places for the benefit of editors potentially wasting time on an already answered question. I wasn't really thinking in terms of special Teahouse protocols for answering questions there. Maybe I should stick to other help boards. ] (]) 23:10, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
On both my user page and talk page, I have added a background to cover the entire pages that I will be changing seasonally—spring, summer, fall, winter—at least for now, using the following code: {{tq|<nowiki><div style="background: #96C8FA; border: 5px solid #000000; padding: 1%;"></nowiki>}}. For winter, for example, I personally associate it with a dark blue; however, I can't use dark blue because then the links and such can't be seen, at least not very well, as they don't contrast well.
== need help resolving dispute on ] article==
For some brief background information, I used to be an administrator on a forum that no longer exists, which ran on vBulletin and later XenForo, where I was the primary stylist. I am very familiar with CSS and remember that for areas that aren't touched by the style properties in the admin control panel, I could use CSS and add that to either the respective template itself or the miscellaneous CSS template by inspecting the element and finding the class I need. For example, {{tq|<nowiki>.body {color: red;}</nowiki>}} affects the text color while {{tq|<nowiki>.body a {color: yellow;}</nowiki>}} affects the link color, which usually also applies to something like {{tq|.body a:hover}}. I know Misplaced Pages works a little differently, at least to editors like me, since I obviously don't have access to the styling page of Misplaced Pages.
hi, some editors won't let me mention clear statements of fact in said article nor will they let me include statements by three highly authoritative sources. i wonder if you could assist or direct me to someone who could. thanks--] (]) 21:04, 8 January 2013 (UTC)
Anyway, I have tried adding {{tq|color: #FF0000;}} as a test to the aforementioned code above in the second paragraph; however, it doesn't affect the text color of the section headings, bullets, links, or signatures, like the timestamps of the signatures, as seen and . I'm sure there may be other areas it doesn't affect, I'm just not using them at all. Is there a way to easily change that and I just need to use another style class or is it another one of those things like the user infobox that has a fixed setting that can't be changed just for a single user? Thanks in advance! ''']''' • 22:09, 9 January 2025 (UTC)
How we will see unregistered users
Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)
Move page
Hi PrimeHunter.. Can you help me to move Kendrick Lee Yen Hui to Kendrick Lee? I have trying to moved the page per WP:NCP, but Kendrick Lee page redirect to Kendrick Lee Yen Hui. I hope you can help. Thank you Stvbastian (talk) 09:45, 31 January 2022 (UTC)
@Stvbastian: Yen Hui has been in the title (at different positions) for 15 years since creation. Based on Google the short form appears more common but it's not a big difference. I think it should go through WP:RM. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:28, 31 January 2022 (UTC)
Template:Sort keys?
{{Sort keys}} has no transclusions, incoming links, documentation, or categories. I would usually take it to TFD, but you tend to know what you are doing, so I am asking here first. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:39, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
@Jonesey95: Thanks. I sometimes get sidetracked and never return. Example use: Sort keys for Category:2021 ATP Tour. I think it has some uses for editors working on category sorting, e.g. to sort singles and doubles more systematically in Category:2021 ATP Tour. Can you give me a week to think about working on documentation, links and some other things? PrimeHunter (talk) 16:43, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
Sure, take your time. It may get nominated by someone else, but you should receive a notice. There is a group of us working to clean up Misplaced Pages:Database reports/Unused templates/1. If the template has one transclusion on any page, it will drop out of the report, which will make it less likely that someone TFD's it. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:01, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
maint cat problem
Hi, I'm stumped with on member of Category:Articles with invalid date parameter in template, a redirect - Noelle Bush. I'm not sure what is causing this, the redirect itself doesn't show the cat and hasn't been edited in years. Since it's protected, I can't try a null edit myself. You may want to add {{R to section}} to categorize it also, since it is the only uncategorized page from before 2022. MB 19:51, 20 March 2022 (UTC)
@MB: Something, probably systematic null edits to pages which haven't been edited for a long time, is causing category updates recently. The error category was added by {{uncategorized|date=November 2015}} before a bot responded by creating Category:Uncategorized from November 2015 today. I have added {{R to section}} as suggested. Category pages are often updated much later than the list of categories on a page. I wouldn't be surprised if Category:Uncategorized pages soon gets other newly bot-created subcategories. New administrator activity requirement
The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.
Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:
  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period
Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.
People in their 50s dying of old age
People in their 50s dying of old age
William Hartnell was about 55 years old when he played the original incarnation of the Doctor in Doctor Who and maybe 58 in his final story. While Richard Hurndall was about 72 or 73 when he played him in the 20th anniversary story The Five Doctors and David Bradley was 75 in the 12th Doctor's (Peter Capaldi) two final episodes The Doctor Falls and Twice Upon a Time. Here are images of 55 year old actors, 58, 72-73 and 75. And the cause of the First Doctor's regeneration was old age. 86.130.4.167 (talk) 18:38, 25 May 2022 (UTC)
Can people die if they've become old, weak and worn out in their 50s? And did the original Doctor look about mid-50s, 60s or 70s? 86.130.4.167 (talk) 19:26, 26 May 2022 (UTC)
Template:Div col/doc#Redirects
Hi, since you seem to have sound knowledge of this kind of issue, I venture asking you whether you deem this revert by Jonesey95 justified, as now there is again only surplus whitespace rendered at Template:Div col/doc#Redirects instead of transclusions of those template links (unlike the ones above for Div col, which are actually displayed correctly). Hildeoc (talk) 18:39, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
@Hildeoc: Template:Div col/doc is used as documentation at both Template:Div col#Redirects and Template:Div col end#Redirects. The code was designed to only show redirects for the viewed template. That seems sensible but with a little more code it's possible to show both on the doc page itself. I have done that. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:21, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
Oh, thank you so, so much! I knew you would come up with the solution I was seeking. You're great. Best wishes--Hildeoc (talk) 20:24, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
PS: So there's no workaround to the whitespace rendered for the invisible transclusion to the template as such?--Hildeoc (talk) 20:29, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
@Hildeoc: A little whitespace in the doc part of a template page isn't a big issue but OK, I fiddled with the code. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:38, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
Thanks a lot once more – and sorry for bothering, but those programming issues are just beyond my skills. All the best, Hildeoc (talk) 23:23, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
Request for a 3rd Opinion
Hello, I have had rather poor interactions with an editor on the following article; https://en.wikipedia.org/List_of_data_recovery_companies
The user and I had a brief conversation on my IP page before I created my account; https://en.wikipedia.org/User_talk:173.160.59.125
As the guidelines suggest, I attempted to reach resolution, but the editor refuses to engage in any productive discussion and simply reverts any edit to the page, without contributing to the Talk page I started to help resolve this dispute.
While I understand that Misplaced Pages is not an advertising platform, we are not attempting to do any form of advertising. I am simply trying to add our company to a list in which it belongs - and I've read through the guidelines quite thoroughly to ensure there is no breach, and believe we are right to be included in the list. A 3rd opinion would be greatly appreciated to help settle the matter, as I am concerned this is becoming an edit war, and I have no interest in such activity.
Thank you, Davoguha (talk) 16:11, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
@Davoguha: We have a process for this: Misplaced Pages:Third opinion. Note that it requires a brief neutral description of the dispute. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:58, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
Thank you, PrimeHunter - I opted not to add to that section, as it requests that a situation be thoroughly discussed on a talk page before making a request. I noted another page mentioned to "avoid the drama" by reaching out directly to an admin. Unfortunately, the editor in question has refused to contribute to the talk page, and simply responds to anything I do by calling it "spam", and claiming I am breaking rules - and has expressed no interest in resolution, simply proclaiming themselves "right". Primarily, the point of debate is whether or not a company can/should be added to a list page, without their own Wiki article existing - and if they can/should, then how it should be added to said list (Externally linked? No linking?). I appreciate your time, thank you. Davoguha (talk) 21:33, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
Tracking categories considered harmful
Nobel Prize
Hi. There has been no serious discussion on the talk page suggesting or hinting that the Prize in Economics should be in the infobox. Repeated reverts by accounts- without a word of commentary, which do not engage in discussion or the talk page- those do not deserve any more than a quick use of the undo button just as they are doing to my edits. My edit was careful and thoughtful and preserved the relationship of the Prize in Economics prominently in the head of the article. If people are interested in that prize, they are welcome to read about it. But it is "Not a Nobel Prize", and editors repeatedly removing that comment from the article are doing a disservice and encouraging the spread of misinformation.
Is there a wikipedia policy to preserve factually incorrect claims and WP:WEASEL words as the status quo until some sort of consensus process happens on the Talk page? I am not a wikipedia expert but it seems that there is no "preserve the status quo, even if it clearly goes against cited references from primary sources", but maybe I am incorrect. 128.237.82.18 (talk) 15:22, 13 October 2022 (UTC)
These are your own opinions. Misplaced Pages operates by reliable sources and consensus. A single editor doesn't have the power to control an article and permanently remove anything they personally consider incorrect witohut being able to convince other editors of the article. See Misplaced Pages:Dispute resolution for your options which do not include to keep reverting everybody else. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:50, 13 October 2022 (UTC)
Duplicate redirects
Can you look at Catherine Institute for Daughters Of The Nobility and Catherine Institute for Daughters Of The Nobility. They look identical, but are not. There some hidden character in the "Of" in the first one. Microsoft Word detects it as a misspelling. I was going to CSD it, but that would probably be too confusing. Can you just delete it. Thanks. MB 02:53, 28 December 2022 (UTC)
Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Lymрhology is another to delete. The target is the corrected version. It looks like these are coming from User:Mykhal/Articles with name in multiple scripts. I don't see any problem with the majority of these that have a visual difference. But these two are very confusing. MB 03:06, 28 December 2022 (UTC)
@MB: Your first two links are identical and only have normal letters. I found the bad name Сatherine Institute for Daughters Of The Nobility. It starts with Es (Cyrillic) instead of latin C. That's the only issue, "Of" is normal. Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Lymрhology has Er (Cyrillic) instead of Latin p in the last word. I have deleted the redirects per G6 although it's a stretch. R3 doesn't apply when they were left by moves. PrimeHunter (talk) 04:44, 28 December 2022 (UTC)
Link pokedex entries
Where was the consensus for this? This seems like an inappropriate use of external links in my opinion. Could you possibly explain why you're doing this? ― Blaze WolfBlaze Wolf#6545 02:18, 28 February 2023 (UTC)
@Blaze Wolf: I did it boldly without prior discussion. We normally don't make external links in the body of articles but it's often different when a whole list is based on the same official source which has a page about each entry. See e.g. National Register of Historic Places listings in Houston Heights, Houston, Texas#Current listings (there are thousands of such lists), List of chess grandmasters#Grandmasters, List of MeSH codes (D02) (around 2500 links on this page alone), 2022 FIFA World Cup#Group stage ("Report" link for every match), List of minor planets: 14001–15000 (whole "Ref" column is external links). The Pokedex links work both as references and additional information, e.g. an image of the Pokemon. I think they are helpful to both readers and editors, and I don't think readers will be surprised by where they go. It would be possible to make inline references instead but it would just create around 100 nearly identical references per list and an extra step to reach the target from the tables. Greetings and reply (Peninsular War timeline)
Greetings PrimeHunter! Thank you for your message and thank you, especially, for taking the time to remove all the pesky "small talk". I only added those because the last column needs to contain longer text (whole sentences/paragraphs) and it appeared the same width as the column with the dates. I'm sure there is a much better way of fixing it (column width parameters or summat?), but I'm not at all technically minded, so the small text it seemed a simple option, if time-consuming...
I hope to be able to answer all your questions in one go, not necessarily in chronological order, but if I leave something out, please don't hesitate to get back to me on it...
As I mentioned in my edit summary for the split, the page just seemed to be getting way too unwieldy —even for someone (yours truly) who knows, at least in theory, where everything is— and I was concerned that any reader coming to it cold would just find it too cumbersome. That said, the point you make about closely connected info being spread out over two pages did worry me* but in debating the split —with myself**— I reckoned that anyone who was sufficiently interested in the subject matter would also be willing to follow the whole chain of events, as well as going off on the inevitable tangents that them there marvellous wikilinks afford us.
* Indeed, I'm beginning to think that I was being too optimist in splitting it into just the two pages, because, in answer to that question, yes! I do have in mind a "huge expansion"...
** No, I did not discuss it anywhere because I wasn't really sure where to do so; the corresponding talk page didn't seem to be the right place 'cos there ain't nothin' happening there... And as the whole thing really was getting too unwieldy for me to edit —even though I'm fortunate to use a device with fully updated software, etc.— I figured it would be better to simply split the content into rough periods of time.
Regarding the extension, I sort of based my rationale on Misplaced Pages:Article size (in particular, WP:SIZERULE and, to a lesser extent —no pun intended— eventual technical issues, WP:CHOKING).
I did consider adding a year index and year rows like the ones in the example you provided, but that format only permits sorting within each section, which defeats the object of searching for sortable content on the whole page —something I consider essential, ie sorting by Spanish, French, British, Anglo-Portuguese victories, etc. (at least those on the same page/year range).
Regarding your suggestion of undoing the split, obviously if it's your considered opinion that that would be preferable, I would bow to your superior technical knowledge. I have no intention of making a stand on this issue. And I fully agree that it would be prefereable to have all the content on one single page/in one single, sortable table. Would it be possible to undo it with your admin buttons without losing all the content I've added since the split?
BTW, as you point out, Special:LongPages has hundreds of lists above 300 kB. But I took that as more of a "notice to mariners" (NTM or NOTMAR) kind of thing, rather than a best-practices guideline...
Sorry for the lengthy response, but I hope all of the above, or at least some of it, goes to explain where I'm coming from... Regards, --Technopat (talk) 00:50, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply. It's way too technical for me to take in in one sitting, so I'll try to reply later today. However, if your edit summary is a summary, in layperson's terms, of what you mean, I really have no objection. BTW, just for the record, am currently using a laptop, although I do have two large screen desktops for use in my real life... (Have never bothered trying to read Wp articles on a smartphone, so no idea what it looks like, but a list of that size must be...). Regards, --Technopat (talk) 02:16, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
Greetings again, PrimeHunter.
Having gone over what you commented, think I understand it better now. When I referred to the system you recommend not being sortable as a whole it was because of all those empty rows in that carrier table (which take up more than a whole screen when clicking on "Navy"!). Am I correct in understanding from what you say that you can write code to prevent that happening (or is it a necessary evil of sortable tables of that length)?
BTW, when I asked you about whether it would be possible to undo the split "without losing all the content I've added", I wasn't thinking of attribution at all (at least not for me), merely the amount of content that I'd added since the split. When I first started editing at Wp I thought the whole idea of having a username was childish (I still do, but...) and that the true spirit of the project meant editing anonymously as an IP, which I did, intensively, for a couple of years, until a couple of old-timer admins convinced me that it would be more useful to the project as a whole if I registered as a user (eventually leading to rollback rights, etc., which in those days had to be requested).
So, the bottom line is that I have no objection to you organising the sortable table in the best interest of users. Thanks for taking the time to sort out anything I have/may have messed up and hope I don't take up too much of your time as I add more content to that timeline. Cheers! --Technopat (talk) 08:41, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
Greetings again! Thanks for undoing the split, and all the re-formatting of the table list.Cheers! --Technopat (talk) 08:20, 7 March 2023 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of List of American Dialect Society's Words of the Year
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on List of American Dialect Society's Words of the Year requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://americandialect.org/woty/all-of-the-words-of-the-year-1990-to-present#1990. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Misplaced Pages takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Misplaced Pages to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Misplaced Pages:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Misplaced Pages:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Misplaced Pages's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines. Thanks for the scripts!
Thank you for the scripts linked and created for Misplaced Pages:Village_pump_(technical)/Archive_205#Template-generated_categories_vs._bot_process! These are already proving helpful. Editors are unendingly inventive, though, e.g. pasting inline links cut from URLs and so including underscores in place of spaces. Problem with adding information to article about Kristin Harila
Hi, I have added new information about Kristin Harila (in section "Controversies") based on very good and reliable sources: The New York Post, Deutsche Welle, Independent.co.uk, globalnews.ca, dailymail.co.uk, skynews.com.au:
https://en.wikipedia.org/Kristin_Harila#Controversies
Unfortunately user called "Szelma W" removed the content I added because: "Your edit is not neutral" - as of Szelma W wrote. I added information about two different topics - Szelma W deleted both (like both were not neutral). I tried to use help from administrator Zzuuzz:
https://en.wikipedia.org/User_talk:Zzuuzz#Kristin_Harila
Zzuuzz wrote me about reaching consensus and advise: "You probably don't need to do anything" - which I do not understand. During the discussion with Zzuuzz Szelma W described me as follow: "has very limited knowledge about the accident on K2". I do not think I can reach consensus with Szelma W especially that she easily dismiss other opinions (and does not even have her own userpage where we could freely talk). I think Szelma W removes and censors content on Misplaced Pages based on her subjective criteria and hope that I could find administrator who could find a solution here. Could you please help me with this issue or direct me to someone who could do it? Regards. Bluffer8 (talk) 23:44, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
Sourcing and notability on lists of Pokémon by generation (e.g., List of generation I Pokémon
Hello PrimeHunter,
The lists of Pokémon by generation articles contain a large volume of information in the 'notes' column which appears to not be sourced and/or below the threshold for notability due to being detailed in-universe information.
I have opened a discussion in the teahouse before making any changes to avoid edit wars and agree on the appropriate actions for these articles. See https://en.wikipedia.org/Wikipedia:Teahouse#Notes_in_the_lists_of_Pok%C3%A9mon_by_generation_(e.g.,_List_of_generation_I_Pok%C3%A9mon) .
As you are one of the people who has contributed strongly to these articles over the years (see https://xtools.wmcloud.org/authorship/en.wikipedia.org/List_of_generation_I_Pok%C3%A9mon , https://xtools.wmcloud.org/authorship/en.wikipedia.org/List_of_generation_II_Pok%C3%A9mon , etc. which list you amongst the top authors of these pages' content), I want to keep you informed so that there is a consensus for any significant changes to these page moving forwards.
Mersenne prime
The part of the Mersenne prime article starting with the following sentence
"All Mersenne numbers with the prime exponents not only primes pass the Fermat primality test for a = 2"
is own work of Mr. Matt Kalinski (possibly the Misplaced Pages user with the Mattedia nick). It is not confirmed by any other RS.
Is it allowed to add this kind of edits to the Misplaced Pages?
Hananya Naftali article draft
Dear@PrimeHunter,
I wish you do help me in expanding the article Hananya Naftali and consequently move it to mainspace. I will be delighted to see you there soon. Thanks! Olivia Harry (talk) 09:35, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
@Olivia Harry: I'm not going to work on the draft but will explain "Interviews are not independent sources, subject will need to pass the criteria at WP:GNG" in . It means that the interview is not good to help show whether the subject qualifies for a Misplaced Pages biography by satisfying our notability criteria. It doesn't mean it's disallowed to use the source. It loks like a good source for content and there was no reason to remove it. Misplaced Pages:Notability (people)#Basic criteria says: "Primary sources may be used to support content in an article, but they do not contribute toward proving the notability of a subject." PrimeHunter (talk) 13:58, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
Are you implying that I should put the interview source back? I am still new here. Olivia Harry (talk) 17:38, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
Without bold
On the Verdicchio and Montepulciano (grape) pages, how can I distinguish "the wines for which Verdicchio must account for a majority of the blend" without using bold type? JackkBrown (talk) 12:24, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
@JackkBrown: I don't know wine but the most common Misplaced Pages symbols to mark certain entries are asterisk and dagger. I suggest {{dagger}} but {{number sign}} at Template:Dagger#Accessible symbols could also be used since it's number-related. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:56, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
@PrimeHunter: how do I use these templates? Never seen them. JackkBrown (talk) 13:00, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
@JackkBrown: They are usually placed right after the marked content without a space, like Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC† (Marche). It's a little hard to spot in long lines so if the property is important then you could also consider the start of the line. I would add a space there. Hi, I commented at VPT again, can you remove the part of your comment with the captcha causing link? It's causing edits to the page to be captcha'd.
I tested by nowiki-ing your link (and commenting, and subsequently self-reverting), and also tested it in the sandbox - those links definitely cause other edits to the page to trigger a captcha (for whatever user right level captchas are triggered for anyways). – 2804:F14:80B2:ED01:9054:EE22:6D09:F464 (talk) 11:28, 9 May 2024 (UTC)
Italic string changes
Why are you making changes of this sort: https://en.wikipedia.org/search/?title=Category:30_Rock_season_7_episodes&diff=next&oldid=1216853221Justin (koavf)TCM19:57, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
@Koavf: I was clearing Category:Pages with disallowed DISPLAYTITLE modifications of around 380 categories with invalid {{DISPLAYTITLE:}}. It incorrectly said "(season 7)" before so 30 Rock was not italicized in the displayed page name at top of the page. Now it is. For many other shows I fixed many seasons and could use the same {{italic title|string=...}} on all seasons. I found this approach easier than fiddling with the specific DISPLAYTITLE on every page, and {{italic title|string=...}} may keep working if a page is moved again. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:09, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
Gotcha. Thanks for that. Is there any other driver to use the template rather than the magic word other than personal preference? ―Justin (koavf)TCM20:24, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
@Koavf: {{italic title|string=...}} often keeps working after a page move while {{DISPLAYTITLE:}} always breaks and many page movers are unaware of DISPLAYTITLE issues. And some people start by copy-pasting code from an existing similar page when creating a new page but fail to change DISPLAYTITLE. A copy-pasted {{italic title|string=...}} from another article about the same work will usually keep working correctly. I never change a working {{DISPLAYTITLE:}} but if it's broken then I often use {{italic title|string=...}} to fix it. The string= option was added on my request and I find it quite useful after fixing thousands of pages in Category:Pages with disallowed DISPLAYTITLE modifications. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:45, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
That’s some brain-thinkin’. Seems like this would be a handy fix at other WMF wikis. I appreciate you educating me. ―Justin (koavf)TCM21:27, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for your Source links script. I've been using it for a while, but noticed that it doesn't work for templates and modules, and can miss articles outside of the main namespace if capitalization after the namespace prefix is different. @Ahecht: I will think about it and come back to you. My script works as I intended by searching for links and ignoring calls. I see your idea but would like to keep a link search for templates. Maybe add a second link "source calls" on templates and modules? I think your script needs \\#invoke instead \#invoke. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:29, 7 June 2024 (UTC)
@PrimeHunter Ahh, good point about links to templates. I'll probably spin off the transclusion part into a separate module. I would suggest at least adding the mwTitle.namespace > 0 portion to catch additional capitalizations. --Ahecht (TALK
Htwiki infobox problem
I'm following up on Misplaced Pages:Village pump (technical)/Archive 211#Haitian Creole infobox problem.
Yesterday, w:ht: Kategori:Paj ak lyen fichye kase had about a dozen pages in it. The count had been pretty stable for weeks. Sometimes I'd clean one up. This morning, there are 67 pages in the cat.
One of the new ones is w:ht:Vilhelm Bjerknes, which is d:Q164389. The article has been associated with the Wikidata item since it was created in November 2012. The current image in the Wikidata item has been there since February 2021. The article hasn't been edited since March 2013. I therefore conclude that the problem isn't in the content.
The infobox template was changed today. Could you take a look at that and see if there's anything obviously wrong? It's not protected, so if you see an obvious error, feel free to fix it. I'm hoping that fixing the template will resolve both the old problems and the new one. WhatamIdoing (talk) 20:14, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
@WhatamIdoing: imaj and lejand are assigned twice in by Kitanago. Template parameters should never be assigned twice. The second assignment overrides the first, also if the second is empty and the first was non-empty. If the intention was to make it optional whether to use |imaj= or |foto= in calls then the correct code is |imaj = {{{imaj|{{{foto|}}}}}}. Similar for |lejand = {{{lejand|{{{tèks|}}}}}}. A separate problem is that ht:Vilhelm Bjerknes has the code |foto=Bjerknes,Vilhelm 1934 London.jpg. The new template version tries to use foto which was ignored before, but the file doesn't exist. Remove the code or change it to an existing file. I examined other pages in ht:Kategori:Paj ak lyen fichye kase. Many of them have a non-existing file in |foto=. I don't know the history behind that but the template could also go back to ignoring foto so the non-existing files don't matter. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:12, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
Like so? WhatamIdoing (talk) 22:16, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
Yes, if the goal is to make the parameter names interchangeable in calls. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:57, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
  • evidence: for a given list of four or five keywords, return result X; for a given list of 20 keywords, return result Y; for unknown, return the unknown result; if empty, be silent.
  • human: for any true value (y, yes, Y, T, true, 1 – whatever the usual options are), return result X; for any usual false value, return result Y; if empty, be silent.
  • date: If the year given, compared to {{CURRENTYEAR}}, is 5 or less years old, then return result X; if it is 5–10 years old, return result Y; if it is >10 years old, complain; if it is empty, then nag.
I have been looking through templates trying to find examples of these, and everything's been turned into Lua modules or is part of a multi-template scheme (or both, e.g., infoboxes), so I haven't found any good examples of what I'd like to do. I also haven't found anything in the help pages that says, very simply, "Here's the code if {{{parameter1}}} is ____, and you want it to return this different thing". Can you think of any models I can follow? (See User:WhatamIdoing/MEDRS evaluation for my notes.) WhatamIdoing (talk) 22:26, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
@WhatamIdoing: I don't know Haitian Creole and haven't examined which templates and modules are available but you can use parser functions directly. See mw:Help:Extension:ParserFunctions##if for testing for empty, mw:Help:Extension:ParserFunctions##ifeq for testing for a single value, mw:Help:Extension:ParserFunctions##switch for multiple values, and mw:Help:Extension:ParserFunctions##ifexpr for your year calculations. You could also make a version of Template:Yesno and maybe add Haitian Creole words for yes/no (if they are different from English). PrimeHunter (talk)
This one is for purely local use. (Htwiki is not advanced enough to have even an ordinary WP:RS page, much less something as specialized as MEDRS.) I spent a while in mw:Help:Extension:ParserFunctions earlier today. I couldn't even figure out which function I needed to focus on. I'll go play with switch for a while. WhatamIdoing (talk) 00:22, 20 October 2024 (UTC)
I made a huge amount of progress on Template:MEDRS evaluation thanks to your pointer. I still need to figure out the date calculations, but everything else is looking pretty good. Thank you! ✨ WhatamIdoing (talk) 04:17, 20 October 2024 (UTC)
Trump stack
Re , please advise whether the hidden comment associated with the body's first image is still needed and still makes sense: "DO NOT MOVE this image to the right. Depending on user configuration, the infobox+navbox may push the photo down, making it adjacent to unrelated prose." Right-alignment is preferred if that will work. Thank you. ―Mandruss  19:05, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
@Mandruss: I'm not aware of any user configuration which can push it down now when {{stack}} is used so the comment seems unnecessary. I was just responding to Misplaced Pages:Help desk#Image and navbox and don't have an opinion on where or whether to display the photo. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:34, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
Mandruss: The left alignment looks like it works better for alignment. When you changed to right alignment, then the original problem came back pushing the image down below the navbox into an unrelated section. Could the edit be switched back to the version as done by PrimeHunter. It is displayed in the correct section following PrimeHunter's edit. ErnestKrause (talk) 15:18, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
@ErnestKrause: Let's see what PrimeHunter has to say about that. What is your configuration? I assume that means platform and skin, etc., maybe user preferences.I'm assuming the hidden comment I added didn't cause the {{stack}} to stop working! ―Mandruss  15:38, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for the comment. Your comment is fine, though the original problem comes back of conflict with navbox when the image is placed on the right. The first version by PrimeHunter I think looked a bit better. It printed the image in the correct section as intended by the previous editors. ErnestKrause (talk) 15:41, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
Let's see what PrimeHunter has to say about that. What is your configuration? I assume that means platform and skin, etc., maybe user preferences.Mandruss  15:47, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
{{stack}} has no effect on the image when it's right-aligned like the stacked content. Each right-aligned element is shown to the right in the order they appear in the source. I only used {{stack}} for the situation where the image was left-aligned. "user configuration" can involve many things like operating system, browser, browser settings, window size, desktop/mobile/app, Misplaced Pages preferences, and user scripts. The skin is important here because the default Vector 2022 has no table of contents inside the article. @Mandruss: Maybe you have another skin and haven't seen how far the right-aligned image is pushed away from its section in Vector 2022 when there is no table of contents to also push down the section. You can log out to see it. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:36, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
Then I was confused by I'm not aware of any user configuration which can push it down now when {{stack}} is used so the comment seems unnecessary. If the image has to be left-aligned for it to work in all configurations, the comment is necessary. I'll self-revert the changes. ―Mandruss  17:39, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
{{World War II aces from Germany}}
Hello, good idea to create such a template. Suggestion, how about renaming it to {{World War II aces of the Luftwaffe}}, this would avoid confusion about the inclusion of Austrian aces. Cheers MisterBee1966 (talk) 08:04, 28 December 2024 (UTC)
@MisterBee1966: Austria was part of Germany at the time (Anschluss), template names are not seen by readers, and the template is based on Category:German World War II flying aces where List of World War II aces from Austria is also included. I don't think there is good reason to rename it. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:09, 28 December 2024 (UTC)
I know that, nevertheless, a good template MisterBee1966 (talk) 20:34, 28 December 2024 (UTC)
Question on CSS
Hi, Prime Hunter! First, I just wanted to say again thank you so much for the help and advice on WP:VPT.
On both my user page and talk page, I have added a background to cover the entire pages that I will be changing seasonally—spring, summer, fall, winter—at least for now, using the following code: <div style="background: #96C8FA; border: 5px solid #000000; padding: 1%;">. For winter, for example, I personally associate it with a dark blue; however, I can't use dark blue because then the links and such can't be seen, at least not very well, as they don't contrast well.
For some brief background information, I used to be an administrator on a forum that no longer exists, which ran on vBulletin and later XenForo, where I was the primary stylist. I am very familiar with CSS and remember that for areas that aren't touched by the style properties in the admin control panel, I could use CSS and add that to either the respective template itself or the miscellaneous CSS template by inspecting the element and finding the class I need. For example, .body {color: red;} affects the text color while .body a {color: yellow;} affects the link color, which usually also applies to something like .body a:hover. I know Misplaced Pages works a little differently, at least to editors like me, since I obviously don't have access to the styling page of Misplaced Pages.
Anyway, I have tried adding color: #FF0000; as a test to the aforementioned code above in the second paragraph; however, it doesn't affect the text color of the section headings, bullets, links, or signatures, like the timestamps of the signatures, as seen here and here. I'm sure there may be other areas it doesn't affect, I'm just not using them at all. Is there a way to easily change that and I just need to use another style class or is it another one of those things like the user infobox that has a fixed setting that can't be changed just for a single user? Thanks in advance! Amaury22:09, 9 January 2025 (UTC)
