== How do I add a Polish-language article to the English Wiki? ==

:Hello, @]. I'm afraid that the answer is probably "No"; but it depends on the quality of the citations in the Polish article. If enough of the sources cited there meet English Misplaced Pages's criteria for ] to establish that he meets English Misplaced Pages's criteria for ], then yes, you can simply translate it. (If there are equally good sources in English, it would be preferred to cite them rather than Polish ones, but Polish sources are perfectly acceptable if they are better than any English ones).

Hi all, quick question about formatting the "via" in a web-based citation.
== Looking for Wiki Editor to do Wiki on my website ==
I'm using open-source link for an exhibition catalogue for the artist Melvin Edwards published in 2019 ({{OCLC|1232485775}}) in the further reading section of an article. The link is a digitized version of the catalogue, seemingly scanned and uploaded from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's library. I have to assume they got the correct the permissions to digitize the catalogue and make it freely available given that library's size/expertise on these kinds of sources, so I ''think'' it would be appropriate to use that link, correct? But I wasn't sure if it was necessary to add a "via library..." to the citation to show where the link originated. Is that necessary here? Thanks all!

:You are citing an exhibition catalog published by Alexander Gray Associates. When I click on the linked title, I end up at some more-or-less anonymous Amazon Web Services page without any apparent connection to the publisher. We use {{para|via}} to name the delivery service if different from the publisher so some sort of {{para|via}} is appropriate here. You could be right that the Amazonws page is 'owned' by the Metropolitan Museum of Art Thomas J. Watson Library. But, if I backtrack to http://libmma.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com I get a 404-not-found error so the 'owner' apparently doesn't care to explicitly identify themselves.
: | |||
:How did you get to the Amazonws page? Is there a landing page at either of the Metropolitan Museum of Art or Thomas J. Watson Library websites with a link that gets you to the Amazonws page? If yes, use that landing page url for {{para|url}} and name the museum or library (as appropriate) in {{para|via}}. That not being possible, I suppose that you are stuck with what you've got but the provenance isn't as good. You might want to make sure that the catalog is archived someplace.
:—] (]) 18:20, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
::The WorldCat listing for the digital version of the catalogue describes the link as "open access", which is why I linked it in my question. That is where I got the link for this source. == Template Categorization Confusion ==
== Deficient article ==
So I'm trying to work on categorization tasks; specifically in Category:All uncategorized pages. Lets take for example, Template:Delay safesubst.
As per the community guidelines for Autobiography, I'm writing about an article about which I'm the subject: Ken Kalfus. The page, which I did not originate, could be more complete, more accurate and more interesting, if anyone wishes to take the trouble. Some suggested revisions:
How am I supposed to correctly categorize this template?
- I never attended Trinity College. It's true that I don't have a degree; the last school I left, however, was New York University. Reference: http://www.nytimes.com/2003/03/22/books/it-started-with-a-vision-of-tolstoy-s-death-then-segued-into-a-first-novel.html?gwh=1245049D7B4BAD52B1D7CAF68CF3985D
At first I thought I should just write:
- My first collection of stories, Thirst, is comprised of short stories that I published in literary magazines, including the Village Voice Literary Supplement, the North American Review, and the University of Arizona's Sonora Review, when David Foster Wallace was its fiction editor. References: already cited Salon piece; also, about the Sonora Review: http://www.sideshowmediagroup.com/?p=88
] | |||
- From 1994 to 1998 I lived in Moscow, where my wife Inga Saffron was the Philadelphia Inquirer's correspondent. (reference: Times article)
Then I read a bit and now thought, what if I put the category on the /doc page and {{subst:Delay safesubst} } on the main template.
- My story "Pu-239" was adapted for film by Scott Z. Burns and starred Paddy Considine, Radha Mitchell and Oscar Isaac. (Reference: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0472156/?ref_=sr_1)
What am I supposed to do for moving both template and their doc pages? Even if I give the doc page a category, Category:All uncategorized pages, still retains the template (item). ] (]) 09:03, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
- My new novel, Equilateral, is being published in April 2013. It's set in Egypt at the end of the 19th century; its theme is the search for extraterrestrial life. (Reference: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_10?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=ken+kalfus+equilateral&sprefix=Ken+Kalfus%2Cstripbooks%2C262)
:@] generally the way templates are categorized is by using {{tl|sandbox other}} on its doc page, like . <span style="white-space:nowrap"><span style="font-family:monospace">'''<nowiki>''']<nowiki>]]'''</nowiki>'''</span> (] • ])</span> 09:16, 15 January 2025 (UTC)

:I don't know a tool to help but here are two manual methods to find the edit. 1) Your browser can probably search for the user name on the page with {{keypress|Ctrl|F}}. Or just look manually. Hover over the timestamp of revisions by that user. Your browser will probably show the url somewhere, for example near the bottom of the window. The url ends with the revision number. If the user has multiple edits then you can also look for one which changed the page size by the same number of bytes with opposite sign (see ]). 2) Click a random diff. The url in the browser address bar should end with something like &diff=536935949&oldid=536934926. Manually (use copy-paste in your browser) replace this with &diff=538965000 (the revision number). Delete the oldid part. ] (]) 02:17, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
:{{ec}} Use the ''oldid'' parameter. For example, https://en.wikipedia.org/search/?title=Misplaced Pages:Help_desk&oldid=538964944, for example, will bring up revision 538964944 of ]. My Dog Has Fleas
I encountered "My dog has fleas instrument" as a crossword puzzle clue, with the answer "uke." Fine, okay, what's that about? I searched for "My Dog Has Fleas" in Misplaced Pages, and got a redirect to "Ukulele." But that doesn't really tell me a darn thing. Shouldn't there be a Wiki standard requiring an entry on the page to explain the redirect? Here's more info, by the way (I see that some of this is reflected in Talk, but shouldn't there be a Wiki standard?)
From http://www.ukeschool.com/ukulele/tuning/my_dog_has_fleas.html:
:You may have heard the phrase My Dog Has Fleas about ukulele tuning. It's a little song, or phrase, that can help you tune your ukulele really quickly! Pluck each of the strings, unfretted, starting with the "G", and sing a word of that phrase to the note each string makes. (G)My (C)Dog (E)Has (A)Fleas! Try this little song every time you've become satisfied that your uke is reasonably in tune - it will become "stuck" in your mind. Sing it out loud, get it more stuck.
:So, when you're out trying to tune your ukulele in the real world, you can use the "My Dog Has Fleas" song as a shortcut when you feel that your uke could use a bit of tuning. Let the song "play" in your head - and pluck each of the strings in the order that should produce the little song. Before long, you will be able to get a fair idea of which string is out of tune - because it won't fit with the little song in your head! It's nice to be able to just re-tune the string that's gone out of tune, and using the "My Dog Has Fleas" song as a "reference" can really help you figure out which one to tune, fast!

:{{ec}}There are a few ways to handle this situation. First of all, Andrewcrawford is right that presenting both contradictory facts is often a good way to proceed if both claims are sourced by RSes of equal quality and strength. But the article usually must point out the contradiction and discuss it (e.g. "Official sources differ on which is the biggest X. Although the Department of Y claims that it is Z, The Department of W claims that it is V."). This puts it in proper context unlike e.g. "The biggest X is Z or V". Another way to handle this requires the use of ]. Here the sources will be carefully analyzed by multiple independent editors on the talk page and a consensus will be formed regarding which is the correct fact. The incorrect fact can then be removed as according to the consensus. This requires an in-depth examination of the sources and a reasoned explanation for why one source is trusted and the other isn't. This can help to avoid problems where one otherwise reliable source makes a typo or mathematical error, etc. (i.e. an oversight, minor mistake, or mistake unrelated to the RS's field of expertise, but not an evaluative error). But this is a weaker solution as ] and new editors can always challenge the removal of the previously determined incorrect info. -] (]) 15:31, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

== When does a non-fiction book "summary" become too long? ==
I'm currently in the process of writing an article for the book '']'', and attempting to summarise its 314 pages. I'm only superficially covering the main points of each chapter and have decided to condense the book's twelve chapters into five sections. However, the first section (which covers chapters one to three) has already grown to four paragraphs. Assuming I give the other sections a similar treatment of three or four paragraphs, the summary might end up being 16–20 paragraphs long. I want to adequately summarise the book, though, and I don't think I could do that in under ten paragraphs. How long is too long? ] (]) 17:26, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

:If you are writing for a Misplaced Pages article, you should find reliable sources that are independent of the Before the Dawn book and summarize what those independent sources write the 314 pages of Before the Dawn. In other words, rather than looking directly at the Before the Dawn book and using your own judgment as a Misplaced Pages editor, you should be using the judgment of the independent reliable sources to determine what is and is not important enough from the Before the Dawn book to include in the Misplaced Pages article. Editors with different/better/worse judgment than your own can come along change your summary based on their own different/better/worse judgment whereas the information from the independent reliable sources are fixed in time. Using independent reliable sources also will help you keep the length of the Misplaced Pages article in check. -- ] (]) 12:43, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

- @ImperialAficionado: It's never an issue to use the same account on different devices. You can always use whichever device you want. It's the first time in 20 years here I have heard somebody be worried about it. If you think you heard something then it was probably about using multiple accounts (see Misplaced Pages:Sockpuppetry) and not multiple devices. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:55, 12 January 2025 (UTC)
Article title capitalization
I am having a hard time understanding how capitalization of articles works. In the article 2026 Alabama Attorney General election the words “attorney general” are capitalized but in 2026 Alabama gubernatorial election, the term “gubernatorial” is not. In what situations do terms like this get capitalized versus when they don’t? Thank you Lima Bean Farmer (talk) 04:23, 12 January 2025 (UTC)
- As per WP:NCCPT, only the first letter of the first word or any proper names should be capitalized. So in this case, "Attorney General" is a proper name, whereas "gubernatorial" is an adjective and thus no capitalization. If you are unsure about capitalization in the future, you can also check how capitalization was done in the cited sources of that particular article. Tutwakhamoe (talk) 05:25, 12 January 2025 (UTC)

Overusage of Citation
I'm currently writing an article regarding a military battle (Battle of Geumyangjang-Ri) with limited sources which can be cited. I've only been able to find one academic paper (can attach if requested) with somewhat comprehensive details of the battle. Other sources have limited/unimportant information or cannot be cited. Whats the point at which it becomes an issue to rely on one source? ExiaMesa (talk) 02:14, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
- If you only have one reliable source, it's already a problem, as you haven't begun to approach notability. --Orange Mike | Talk 02:31, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
- That was my secondary concern. Though based on my research its a moderately notable battle (not in terms of the Misplaced Pages guidelines), I think the lack of reliable english sources is contributable to the lack of US involvement. (The engagement occurred between an Turkish Brigade and PLA forces.) Is 2-3 sources sufficient or should I try a search into various romanizations and possibly turkish language sources. - This Korean War ?
- About the battle. Did you tried to find sources in Korean ? Anatole-berthe (talk) 03:24, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
- If it was a battle that was a part of the Korean War than it might be appropriate as a section within the greater war, and a single reliable source might be sufficient, but it sounds like right now without more reliable sources a separate article might be problematic. Filter log by namespace?

Special:Log has a bunch of filter options, but not one for namespace. Is it possible to only see log entries for a particular namespace, like how Special:NewPages does it? Thanks. ''']''' (talk • contribs) 11:22, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
- It is not, and we've been asking since (at least) 2008 - there are a few combinations of parameters (primarily log type) that, combined with this, would make it unacceptably slow, and resistance to adding indices to fix that. There's support for doing it through the API (most recent deletions from mainspace, for example), and it can be queried for through Quarry or similar tools - and if you have specific queries you want to run, I can help with that - but adding it to the web interface would amount to a free denial-of-service attack. —Cryptic 09:59, 14 January 2025 (UTC)
- Oh wow, I didn't expect this to have been an issue for nearly 2 decades. I'll run a simple Quarry query then. Thanks for the reply! ''']''' (talk • contribs) 08:42, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
How do I add a Polish-language article to the English Wiki?
Good morning! I am interested in Colonel Kazimierz Deszberg of the Austro-Hungarian Army in WWI and the Polish Army in the inter-war period. He is featured in the Polish Wiki at pl:Kazimierz Deszberg – Misplaced Pages, wolna encyklopedia though his biography is a bit incomplete. Can I simply do an English translation of that article, trim it up a little (a second marriage and a link to the article about Brygidki Prison where he was imprisoned before being murdered in the Katyn Forest massacres), and publish it complete with the Polish-language citations?
Thank you, and if there's a better place to ask, please point me there.... AVGbuff (talk) 12:56, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
- Hello, @AVGbuff. I'm afraid that the answer is probably "No"; but it depends on the quality of the citations in the Polish article. If enough of the sources cited there meet English Misplaced Pages's criteria for reliability, independence, and significant coverage of Deszberg to establish that he meets English Misplaced Pages's criteria for notability, then yes, you can simply translate it. (If there are equally good sources in English, it would be preferred to cite them rather than Polish ones, but Polish sources are perfectly acceptable if they are better than any English ones).
- But most articles in other Wikipedias (and, to be honest, many articles in English Misplaced Pages) do not meet the current standards for sourcing, so will not be accepted as they stand.
- General guidance is at WP:translation. ColinFine (talk) 13:20, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
- A translated article has to meet the same requirements as any other article, so Help:Your first article is relevant as well. TSventon (talk) 13:25, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
"Via" formatting/usage
Hi all, quick question about formatting the "via" in a web-based citation.
I'm using this open-source link for an exhibition catalogue for the artist Melvin Edwards published in 2019 (OCLC 1232485775) in the further reading section of an article. The link is a digitized version of the catalogue, seemingly scanned and uploaded from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's library. I have to assume they got the correct the permissions to digitize the catalogue and make it freely available given that library's size/expertise on these kinds of sources, so I think it would be appropriate to use that link, correct? But I wasn't sure if it was necessary to add a "via library..." to the citation to show where the link originated. Is that necessary here? Thanks all!
Here's how I think it would be formatted:
- Martins, Sérgio B. (2019). "Lines for Melvin Edwards' Painted Sculpture". In Jassan, Alejandro (ed.). Melvin Edwards: Painted Sculpture (PDF) (Exhibition pamphlet). New York: Alexander Gray Associates. pp. 5–9. ISBN 9780578604220. OCLC 1137340955. Retrieved 13 January 2025 – via Thomas J. Watson Library.
19h00s (talk) 16:11, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
- What do you mean by
open source
? Did you mean free-to-read? - You are citing an exhibition catalog published by Alexander Gray Associates. When I click on the linked title, I end up at some more-or-less anonymous Amazon Web Services page without any apparent connection to the publisher. We use
|via=
to name the delivery service if different from the publisher so some sort of|via=
is appropriate here. - How did you get to the Amazonws page? Is there a landing page at either of the Metropolitan Museum of Art or Thomas J. Watson Library websites with a link that gets you to the Amazonws page? If yes, use that landing page url for
|url=
and name the museum or library (as appropriate) in|via=
. That not being possible, I suppose that you are stuck with what you've got but the provenance isn't as good. You might want to make sure that the catalog is archived someplace. - —Trappist the monk (talk) 18:20, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
- The WorldCat listing for the digital version of the catalogue describes the link as "open access", which is why I linked it in my question. That is where I got the link for this source. And it took me 5 seconds to Google "libmma" and realize that link was hosted via the Met's library, as confirmed by the listing in their catalogue. --19h00s (talk) 21:32, 13 January 2025 (UTC)

- Is there any chance this could be a problem on other pages? I'm basing that off this Wikidata entry including about a dozen other Wikipedias' COI disclosure wizard links. Is it possible to nominate an entire Wikidata entry for deletion? - Purplewowies (talk) 17:32, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
- Or the actual links have been removed and I'm just seeing a bit of garbage info near the top of the entry. Question still stands but I'm less worried about it affecting the wikis now. - Purplewowies (talk) 17:35, 13 January 2025 (UTC)

Dorothi Fox shows "Born 8 January 1930 (age 94)". Shouldn't that be (age 95)? Boers1 (talk) 00:14, 14 January 2025 (UTC)

Trying to add a category to a talk page
On all the vital articles pages, more specifically the talk pages, there are these categories on the bottom of the page (ex. Talk:The arts) B-Class level-1 vital articles Misplaced Pages level-1 vital articles in Arts B-Class vital articles in Arts. My question to you is I would like to edit the template so that it adds the broader category of Category:Misplaced Pages level-1 vital articles to each article at the appropriate level. Any idea on how I could do that? I hope I explained my query well. Interstellarity (talk) 00:38, 14 January 2025 (UTC)
- Interstellarity, there is a list at Misplaced Pages:Vital articles/Level/1, so I don't think adding the individual articles to Category:Misplaced Pages level-1 vital articles would be useful. TSventon (talk) 02:30, 14 January 2025 (UTC)
Achieve the same effect that the TAB key achieves in word processing?
I MS word, I can get this effect using the TAB key:
A This text is a certain distance from the left edge of the page.
This text should be the SAME distance from the left edge of the page (but may be a bit off now).
B This text is a certain distance from the left edge of the page.
This text should be the SAME distance from the left edge of the page (but may be a bit off now).
How do I make a Misplaced Pages page look likek this? Thank you in advance. Jan Arvid Götesson (talk) 01:50, 14 January 2025 (UTC)
- Template:Indent might be what you're looking for. Tutwakhamoe (talk) 02:19, 14 January 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks but no. Template Indent does not allow me to put the “A” and the “B” on the first and third lines of my example above. Jan Arvid Götesson (talk) 08:21, 14 January 2025 (UTC)
- I can think of, hm, at least three ways to format text like that, depending on what it's supposed to convey semantically - a list of two items each split by a linebreak, a list of four items with no list marker on #2 and #4 and an explicit value on #3, and a table. They're all kind of clumsy and I don't think any of them would be appropriate in articles. What specifically are you trying to do? —Cryptic 09:17, 14 January 2025 (UTC)
- Thansk for responding. You can see what I am trying to do in an article that I have only worked on in Swedish at the moment. Please go to Högstenagaldern by clicking “sv”. Please go to section “Radikal nytolkning”. There you will see four lines in a runic inscription. It means side A, line 1, side A, line 2, side B, line 1, side B, line 2. Creating a disambiguation page
Hi, I have a somewhat technical question related to creating a disambiguation page. I've noticed that the word "Nuda" redirects to Beroidae, and there are two pages whose title is the word "Nuda" itself, but with a disambiguating parenthesis (Nuda (album); Nuda (song)). I think it would be appropriate to create a disambiguation page for these and make it the primary page, but I'm not sure how to proceed without breaking links or perhaps going against MOS. Could you please give me some pointers? Cheers! Revirvlkodlaku (talk) 03:21, 14 January 2025 (UTC)
- Revirvlkodlaku You could
- move Nuda to Nuda (zoology) and update 40 incoming links (I don't think there is a primary topic)
- create Nuda (disambiguation)
- move Nuda (disambiguation) to Nuda using Misplaced Pages:Requested moves/Technical requests if necessary
- link Nuda to it:Nuda via Wikidata item Q3879241. TSventon (talk) 03:52, 14 January 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks @TSventon. If I move Nuda (disambiguation) to Nuda, would the latter then become the disambiguation page? Revirvlkodlaku (talk) 15:50, 14 January 2025 (UTC)
- Revirvlkodlaku yes, my suggestion produces a disambiguation page at "Nuda" and a redirect at "Nuda (disambiguation)". You could achieve a similar result by editing "Nuda" to create a disambiguation page and creating a new redirect at "Nuda (disambiguation)". TSventon (talk) 16:56, 14 January 2025 (UTC)
Justine Bateman
Please look at reference number 41 - I have tried so hard to get it right. Thanks for repairing. Srbernadette (talk) 05:56, 14 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Srbernadette: I replaced the reference to fix the errors. The first CS1 error was indicating that there was a generic name in the
|last=
parameter. In this case, it looks like the last name was listed as Correspondent, which is the generic name the template didn't like. The second error was stating that bolding or italics markup isn't allowed in the|website=
parameter. The''Newsweek''
name with the apostrophes isn't allowed with that parameter because the name is automatically italicized when it renders. When citing websites or books, I will usually use this tool to create the reference for me because its a lot simpler. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask them here. cyberdog958 08:17, 14 January 2025 (UTC)
Any alternatives for Misplaced Pages:Updating information?
It's too short for me. Is there more in depth essay or other policy to read relating to this topic? All Tomorrows No Yesterdays (Ughhh.... What did I do wrong this time?) 12:54, 14 January 2025 (UTC)

Regarding GA Nominations
Could one nominate an article, even while >90% of the article is copied? I'm planning on putting General secretaryship of Mikhail Gorbachev up at GAN after some copyediting if that is allowed. All Tomorrows No Yesterdays (Ughhh.... What did I do wrong this time?) 14:56, 14 January 2025 (UTC)
- Hello All Tomorrows No Yesterdays! Any article can theoretically be nominated if it meets the good article criteria, but you should have a strong understanding of the sourcing it uses and make sure you've checked it against the criteria. You might consider raising this at the good article talk page. The most active GAN reviewers watch that page so you should be able to get a more in-depth answer about the actual process there. question about deletion review
i posted a request at Misplaced Pages:Deletion review, and now my request no longer appears there. is it routine for requests to be moved once they have been read, or should i be worried? please ping me when you reply. thanks. Sm8900 (talk) 15:35, 14 January 2025 (UTC)

How to add image of Print newspaper in pdf file as source?e
Daily Star is a prominent Bangladeshi newspaper. It has covered so many news for long days. There had been many things happened from 90s to 2025. Various important topics which is widely cited before we can't add in English Misplaced Pages as there is no source or is not available in online. But I have images of Daily star news as pdf file. i want to add it as source. How can I do that? Anyone can check it from প্রলয়স্রোত (talk) 20:27, 14 January 2025 (UTC)
- @প্রলয়স্রোত: A reliable published source does not have to be available online. See WP:RS. It just must be theoretically possible for a member of the general public somewhere to go see a physical copy, e.g., in a library in Bangladesh. It is not legal for you to upload an image as that would be a copyright violation. -Arch dude (talk) 21:01, 14 January 2025 (UTC)

Template Categorization Confusion
So I'm trying to work on categorization tasks; specifically in Category:All uncategorized pages. Lets take for example, Template:Delay safesubst.
How am I supposed to correctly categorize this template?
At first I thought I should just write:
]
Then I read a bit and now thought, what if I put the category on the /doc page and {{subst:Delay safesubst} } on the main template.
What am I supposed to do for moving both template and their doc pages? Even if I give the doc page a category, Category:All uncategorized pages, still retains the template (item). Bondishloka (talk) 09:03, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Bondishloka generally the way templates are categorized is by using {{sandbox other}} on its doc page, like this. ''']''' (talk • contribs) 09:16, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
Annoying map in Infobox
Using "display=title" in "Template-Coord"" displays the coordinates above the wiki article.
In my sandbox of the "Yisan" article, no map is shown under "Tambon" in Infobox.
But when I copy this "Yisan" article from my sandbox to the "Yisan" wiki article, a map automatically appears under "Tambon" in Infobox.
The question is how can I stop this annoyance.
