User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Misplaced Pages. The idea is that it takes something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Reactivation of this project

After reading WP:REVIVE, I have changed {{WikiProject status}} to Active after adding myself as Active Participant, but it is still showing as ‘inactive’ here: Talk:International Association of Wagner Societies. What am I doing wrong? Chrisdevelop (talk) 23:06, 14 June 2024 (UTC)

@Jmcgnh: Thanks, I see that is actually in item #10. I copied that text and pasted into the Project after adding }} to the right of ‘main’. Does that look right now? https://en.wikipedia.org/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Richard_Wagner. I can’t see the banner text in the Source to copy to the Talk page. @Chrisdevelop: Here - Special:Diff/1229464151 - I've done it. That reveals a bunch of requests for additional work that WikiProjects administration seems to expect. I'm going to have to track down what you thought you did. It doesn't sound right. — jmcgnh 23:46, 16 June 2024 (UTC)

@Jmcgnh Thank you! I only tried the other steps when the RWVI Talk page Project Status kept saying "Inactive" after I had changed the status to what you have now reverted to. It all looks fine now, but as you say, lots of work to do finding other editors to collaborate and un-red-linking everything. Hi Chris, I'm curious what your goals are with this reactivation. If you're not aware, WikiProjects are not what they were 10 years ago. Some are rather dormant and serve as casual meeting places for interested editors, and most are completely ignored even if outwardly considered "active". There are only a handful truly active and a very small amount that still work together. Unfortunately, without clear and actionable goals, probably little will come of this. Thanks for promptly replying. I was surprised to see a WikiProject for such a notable composer as Richard Wagner showing as ‘inactive’, so I went to the WikiProject page to discover it laying dormant after having appparently been quite busy.

During the reactivation process, I saw a great many Articles and Categories had listed it on their Talk Pages, so I wasn’t sure whether deactivation was justified. I accept what you say about their decline in popularity over the past decade, but I have participated in other WikiProjects that are quite active, so couldn’t understand what happened here.

After reactivation, my next step is now to ask inactive editors if they want to become active again, as they may not even be aware they had been moved to the Inactive list. If enough say yes, we may see some discussion and plans for new articles, or revision of existing ones.

If you would like to participate, you or I can move your name into the active list; alternatively you could also delete yourself from the Inactive list if you don’t want to be approached again. Chrisdevelop (talk) 01:34, 19 June 2024 (UTC)

Chris, I fear you are misunderstanding somethings about WikiProjects. You say "I was surprised to see a WikiProject for such a notable composer as Richard Wagner showing as ‘inactive’", but this has me confused. All WikiProjects are created by interested editors, it just so happened that there were enough at one point (since gone) to create one for Wagner. Notice how there are no WikiProjects on Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Schubert etc.

Project deactivation occurs when no one in the project is actively contributing towards the project goals. If you look through Misplaced Pages talk:WikiProject Richard Wagner/Archive 7, you'll see no conversations since 2015 that included more than one person. The articles and categories remain in a project's scope/categorization, regardless of whether the project is active or not. They were put there when it was active and they essentially remain there forever. Aza24 (talk) 19:49, 21 June 2024 (UTC)

I recently made a lot of changes to the RWVI site and wanted to get feedback from others from this project who had worked on Wagner-related projects in the past, so was surprised to see it deactivated. I have reactivated it, to see what happens. If it dies, it dies, but not for the lack of trying. Chrisdevelop (talk) 11:11, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
