I am providing members of the ] along with users who frequently edit weather-related articles an update to the discussions regarding ].
== Main page appearance: Typhoon Rusa ==
For starters, no "formal" administrative-style rules have occurred. All that means is the template is not formally deprecated and is still in use. '''However''', {{noping|Rlandmann}}, an administrator on English Misplaced Pages, has begun an undertaking of reviewing and assessing all images (~1,400) that use the PD-NWS copyright template.
This is a note to let the main editors of ] know that the article will be appearing as ] on January 22, 2013. You can view the TFA blurb at ]. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director {{user|Raul654}} or his delegates {{user|Dabomb87}}, {{user|Gimmetoo}}, and {{user|Bencherlite}}, or start a discussion at ]. If the previous blurb needs tweaking, you can change it—following the instructions at ]. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. The blurb as it stands now is below:
'''What we know''': | |||
<blockquote> | |||
*Following email communications, the National Weather Service of Sioux Falls has '''removed''' their disclaimer, which has been used for the PD-NWS template for decades. This means, as far as the National Weather Service is concerned, the following statement '''is no longer valid:''' {{tq|By submitting images, you understand that your image is being released into the public domain. This means that your photo or video may be downloaded, copied, and used by others.}} Currently, the PD-NWS template links to of the disclaimer. However, of the disclaimer no longer contains that phrase.
<div style="float: left; margin: 0.5em 0.9em 0.4em 0;">]</div>
*See ] for this point's information. NWS Paducah (1) failed to give attribution to a photographer of a tornado photograph, (2) placed the photo into the public domain without the photographer explicitly giving them permission to do so (i.e. the photo is not actually in the public domain), (3) and told users to acknowledge NWS as the source for information on the webpage. Oh, to note, this photographer is a ] (i.e. '''a judge'''). So, the idea of automatically trusting images without clear attribution on weather.gov are free-to-use is in question.
''']''', the 10th ] of the ], was the most powerful to strike ] in 43 years. It developed on August 22 from the ] in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, then moved to the northwest, intensifying into a powerful typhoon. On August 26, the storm moved across the ] of Japan, causing two fatalities. Across Japan, the typhoon dropped torrential rainfall peaking at {{convert|902|mm|in|abbr=on}} in ]. After weakening slightly, Rusa made ] on ], South Korea with winds of 140 km/h (85 mph). It weakened while moving through the country, dropping heavy rainfall that peaked at {{convert|897.5|mm|in|abbr=on}} in ]. A 24 hour total of {{convert|880|mm|in|abbr=on}} in the city broke the record for the highest daily precipitation in the country. Over 17,000 houses were damaged, and large areas of crop fields were flooded. In South Korea, Rusa killed at least 233 people. The typhoon also dropped heavy rainfall in neighboring North Korea, leaving 26,000 people homeless and killing three. Rusa also destroyed large areas of crops in the country already affected by ongoing famine conditions. {{TFAFULL|Typhoon Rusa}}
*The Wikimedia Commons has a process known as ], where if their is ''significant doubt'' that an image is free-to-use, it will be deleted. Note, one PD-NWS file ]. The closing administrator remarks for the deletion discussion were: "{{tq|Per the ], there is "significant doubt" about the public domain status of this file (4x keep + nominator, 5x delete), so I will delete it.}}"
</blockquote> | |||
*Several photographs/images using the PD-NWS are currently mid-deletion discussion, all for various reasonings.
] (]) 23:01, 14 January 2013 (UTC)
*As of this message, 250 PD-NWS images have been checked out of the ~1,400.
{{clear}} | |||
*The photograph of the ] (]) was found to '''not''' be in the public domain. It is still free-to-use, but under a CC 2.0 license, which requires attribution. From April 2009 to August 2024, Misplaced Pages/Wikimedia was incorrectly (and by definition, illegally) using the photograph, as it was marked incorrectly as a public domain photograph.
'''Solutions''':<br>
== ''The Signpost'': 14 January 2013 ==
As stated earlier, there is no "formal" rulings, so no "formal" changes have been made. However, there is a general consensus between editors on things which are safe to do:
*Images made directly by NWS employees can be uploaded and used under the new ] (Usage: <nowiki>{{PD-USGov-NWS-employee}}</nowiki> ). This is what a large number of PD-NWS templated images are being switched to.
*Images from the (DAT) can be uploaded and used under the ] (Usage: <nowiki>{{PD-DAT}}</nowiki> ). A large number of images are also being switched to this template.
For now, you are still welcome to upload images under the PD-NWS template. However, if possible it is recommended using the two templates above. I will send out another update when new information is found or new "rulings" have been made. '''The ]''' (] 03:28, 17 August 2024 (UTC)

On the Commons, an RFC discussion is taking place to figure out how to manage the template. No "formal" administrative-style rules have occurred, so nothing has changed. That is not a surprise as the RFC is still ongoing.
{{center|'''What this noticeboard is not:'''}}

* It is not a place to discuss disputes that are ] at other ].
* It is not a substitute for the talk pages: the dispute must have been ] (not just through edit summaries) before resorting to DRN.
* It is not a court with judges or arbitrators that issue binding decisions: we focus on resolving disputes through consensus, compromise, and explanation of policy.
*The entire ] has been placed inside a "License Review" template, which is viewable via the link aforementioned.
{{center|'''Things to remember:'''}}
*Most of the photographs which were uploaded to the Commons originally under the PD-NWS template (approximately 1,500) have been reviewed. In the case of third-party photos...i.e. ones not taken by the National Weather Service themselves...there is an option which was ] to be valid from an English Misplaced Pages Administrator.
==Disambiguation link notification for March 5==
*'''<big>KEY</big>: Third party images of tornadoes & weather-related content can potentially be uploaded via ]!'''
*Experiments/testing has been done already! In fact, I bet you couldn't tell the difference, but the tornado photograph used at the top of the ] was already switched to a Non-Free File (NFF)! Check it out: ]! That photo's description can also be used as a template for future third-party tornado photographs uploaded to Misplaced Pages...with their respective information replaced.
*NFFs can be uploaded to multiple articles as well!
*The absolute key aspect of NFFs is that they relate to the article and are not decoration. For example with the Joplin tornado, the photograph: (1) shows the size of the tornado, (2) shows the "wall of darkness", which was described by witnesses, (3) shows a historic, non-repeatable event of the deadliest tornado in modern U.S. history. The exact reasoning does not have to be extremely specific as Misplaced Pages's NFF guidelines "is one of the most generous in the world" (words of {{noping|Rlandmann}} <small>(not pinged)</small>, the administrator reviewing all the PD-NWS template images).
*Tornado photographs will almost certainly qualify under the NFF guidelines, especially for tornadoes with standalone articles or standalone sections.
*'''NFFs cannot be used when a free-photograph is available, no matter the quality, unless the section is about that specific photograph.''' For example, the photograph used at the top of the ] article is confirmed to be free-to-use, therefore, no NFFs of that tornado can be uploaded on Misplaced Pages. However, the "Dead Man Walking" photograph could almost certainly be uploaded as an NFF to the ] article as that photograph is the topic of a section in the article.
*NFFs currently on Misplaced Pages can and should be placed in this category: ].

My digitizing of the MWL sections for the XT database project has been done from 1964-1971...not far enough for Fifi-Orlene. During this weekend into Monday I'll be adding more TC images for the 1963-1971 period (1965-1966 and 1969-1971 are mostly done). It may take another month or two to finish off the scanning of the 1970s, and scan in the late 1950s and early 1960s, depending upon what lies in the library downstairs. The remainder of the scanning for the earliest period might have to wait until my next NOAA Central Library visit. ] (]) 21:41, 23 March 2013 (UTC)
:All this MWL scanning is preparatory work for what is to come. I'm still putting out "feelers" within the meteorological community as to whether other similar databases have already been developed, based on surface maps and surface data. NCEP and ECMWF reanalysis grids are being used as of late to try to develop similar climatologies, but since they're based on grids, they will underestimate central pressures and strength of winds, even if they had all related ship observations. One of the big flaws with the reanalyses is that there is a significant amount of ship observations which have yet to be included into ICOADS, that still lies on the old surface maps or on paper-based ship logs. If the ship data is not in ICOADS, the reanalyses don't know they exist. ] (]) 22:22, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

Hello Hurricanehink! | |||
== ''The Signpost'': 15 April 2013 ==
I have to admit I don't know exactly what I'm doing as I have only started adding to wikipedia. I have a weird love for sharpies and noticed that the page didn't talk about specific colors or where they come from (certain colors are discontinued or only come in certain packs). I don't want to be a bother but I added a bunch to this page and it was reverted by another user. At first glance they hadn't said anything, just simply reverted my input. I had to ask them why and they gave me attitude and really no explanation for the revert. So I added my information again....to have the same user revert my stuff again. I don't understand because I sourced my work. Once looking at this user's talk page I realized he does this to many people, on many different subjects. He thinks he's wikipedia king, the end all be all if you will. Many people on the page are asking for the information I provided, I truly don't get if this is my fault or the user who feels they would like to revert anything added by another person. I don't know if I should open a dispute resolution or ask for a protection for my items, as stated previously I don't completely understand how all of this works. Thank you in advance for all that you do. ] (]) 04:24, 14 October 2024 (UTC)

Hey there. For whatever reason, I took a look at the Tina and Fico articles. Fico has an upside down satellite image...but that's not the main reason for this chat. It's all about John. While John is the longest-lived TC in the northern Pacific, it is not the longest-lived northeast Pacific tropical cyclone (doesn't seem to matter if you use 140W or 180 as a guide longitude). John was east of 140W for nine days, and east of the international dateline for 16 days consecutive, 17 days total, which is close to the amount of time Celeste stayed east of the dateline. I removed the wording about John having this record from the Fico article. Tina still owns ''that'' record, spending nearly all its time east of 140W. ] (]) 17:06, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

::Earth100, please note that while Hurricanehink is an admin, since he's acting as your mentor, someone else, and that's going to be Bbb23 and I, are going to have to play bad cop. And I have to tell you that your request above is exactly the opposite of what needs to happen. Many mentors run their mentees through a several month long program, all conducted in userspace, before they allow them to edit articles directly; this is especially true for an editor has a had a problem before. You need to do whatever Hh is asking you to do on the mentorship page. Additionally, for the early stages, even if Hh is going to allow you to edit directly, you will need to state exactly what you plan to change, not just request blanket permission to go edit an article. That is, once Hh approves that you're ready to choose your own articles to edit, you're still going to have to do the draft work in a sandbox and then say "This is how I would recommend changing the article." ] (]) 21:27, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

:Earth100, I am trying to be blunt here: I consider you pursuing this discussion further to be very, very close, if not already over the line, of violating your unblock conditions. I don't mind that you're asking the questions here, so much, but I do mind that you are asking them, not listening to the answers, and, more importantly, '''not doing what your mentor is telling you to do'''. You have an assignment on your mentorship page. Please attend to that first. Please do not starting bringing up edits that you want to start making to articles. This is '''exactly''' like training in a skill--let's say, for example, martial arts. If your trainer tells you to practice bowing as the first "skill", you can't go to the trainer and say "Is it okay if I practice sparring instead?" You need to follow the program Hh is laying out for you. ] (]) 14:06, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
::As Qwyrxian has generously included me as a "bad cop", I'm pretty much going echo what he's already said. You ''must'' follow Hink's instructions. The best questions you could possibly ask would be about the instructions and about the assignments he's given you. You ''must'' stop being so eager to edit articles, regardless of the contemplated edit. I already told you that this is going to require patience on your part. You are fortunate that Hink is willing to work with you, but if you aren't willing to work him and abide by ''his'' rules, then you're wasting his time and everyone else's time. So, forget your own agenda completely. Act like nothing else exists except your mentorship program, and just do what the teacher tells you to do. If you can't live with that, then you shouldn't have enrolled in the course. It's not a good sign for you to be having this much trouble so early in the process.--] (]) 00:11, 30 April 2013 (UTC)
All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. Hello Hink,
And thanks very much for all of your quality contributions and ]s — believe it or not, you are an inspiration!
I wanted to ask for some help verifying a death estimate for a EPac storm. I was doing some research on 1988's Hurricane Kristy, a storm which appears to have caused significant deadly flooding and was building a draft article in my sandbox. In 2014, @] made an claiming 21 direct deaths had been due to the hurricane (which was the primary reason I decided to look into making an article for it), but the source he provided had no direct link, and I can't find the article he referenced anywhere online or in newspaper archives.

The reason I'm coming to you is because Cyclonebiskit appears to have gone inactive for almost a year now, so I can't ask him to provide the source for me, and I wanted a more experienced editor to look for the source for a quick couple minutes in case I missed something. If you can find it anywhere, let me know. If not I plan to remove the source and delete the draft, as I feel uneasy about the potentially inaccurate death toll having gone unnoticed for over 10 years now. Here's a ] to Kristy's section, the source is FN59. ]]⛈️ 06:54, 3 November 2024 (UTC)

== Appealing my ban? == | |||
== WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre ==
Hi Hink, hope you're doing well. After a long period of inactivity (real life got in the way), I've gotten more active again, and I was thinking of appealing (oof, the discussion makes me cringe). I appealed in June 2022, which failed because I had continued some of the same editing that led to the ban. Over the past couple of months, I've participated a lot in RMs, a topic that I had once had problems in, with rationales supporting policy, and in almost all cases, the discussions have been closed in my favor. This is in contrast to shortly before my previous appeal, in which a CSD criterion that I proposed had zero supports.
{|{{Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Good articles/Recruitment Centre/Shell|introduction=Hello! Now, some of you might have already received a similar message a little while ago regarding the Recruitment Centre, so if you have, there is no need to read the rest of this. This message is directed to users who have reviewed over 15 Good article nominations and '''are not''' part of ] (the first message I sent out went to only WikiProject members).

So for those who haven't heard about the Recruitment Centre yet, you may be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around it (to the right). The answer? WikiProject Good articles will be launching a Recruitment Centre very soon! The centre will allow all users to be taught how to review Good article nominations by experts just like you! However, in order for the Recruitment Centre to open in the first place, we need some volunteers:
== ''The Signpost'': 12 December 2024 ==
*'''Recruiters:''' The main task of a recruiter is to teach users that have never reviewed a Good article nomination how to review one. To become a recruiter, all you have to do is meet ]. If we don't get at least 5-10 recruiters to start off with (at the time this message was sent out, 2 recruiters have volunteered), the Recruitment Centre ''will not'' open. If interested, make sure you meet the criteria, read ] and add your name to the ]. (One of the great things about being a recruiter is that there is no set requirement of what must be taught and when. Instead, all the content found in the ] is a guideline of the main points that should be addressed during a recruitment session...you can also take an entire different approach if you wish!) If you think you will not have the time to recruit any users at this time but are still interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters but just fill in the "Status" parameter with "Not Available".

Storm Colour template
When I was editing User:OhHaiMark/1980 Pacific typhoon season, I noticed that when I subsituted the values of the template on the section for Typhoon Dom, it didn't mention the warning center. Normally, it does something like Typhoon (JMA), but it doesn't seem like that's the case. OhHaiMark (talk) 16:56, 21 July 2024 (UTC)

Alert: PD-NWS Violations
This is an alert being sent to all active editors on the WikiProject of Weather and any editor who has recently editors weather-related articles.
Editors on the Commons have received communication from the National Weather Service that the Template:PD-NWS, which is often used to upload weather-related images, is incorrect. There will be a discussion starting on the Commons Copyright Noticeboard within the next few days to determine how to manage this issue. Under the current PD-NWS copyright template, images on any NWS webpage was considered to be in the public domain unless it had a direct copyright symbol and/or copyright watermark.
One National Weather Service office has confirmed this is not the case. For the next few days, it may be best to not upload any image from an NWS webpage that was not made or taken directly by the National Weather Service themselves. Once the Commons determine how to move forward, editors will recent a new alert. The Weather Event Writer (Talk Page) 23:41, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
- I am going to append this additional warning to @WeatherWriter‘s message: the National Weather Service emailed @Rlandmann today and clarified that the upload process does NOT automatically release a photo/video into the public domain. I strongly advise you not to upload anything under a PD-NWS tag unless it is specifically produced by the weather service. West Virginia WXeditor (talk) 04:25, 10 August 2024 (UTC)

PD-NWS Violations Update #1
I am providing members of the WikiProject of Weather along with users who frequently edit weather-related articles an update to the discussions regarding the PD-NWS image copyright template.
For starters, no "formal" administrative-style rules have occurred. All that means is the template is not formally deprecated and is still in use. However, Rlandmann, an administrator on English Misplaced Pages, has begun an undertaking of reviewing and assessing all images (~1,400) that use the PD-NWS copyright template.
What we know:
- Following email communications, the National Weather Service of Sioux Falls has removed their disclaimer, which has been used for the PD-NWS template for decades. This means, as far as the National Weather Service is concerned, the following statement is no longer valid:
By submitting images, you understand that your image is being released into the public domain. This means that your photo or video may be downloaded, copied, and used by others.
Currently, the PD-NWS template links to an archived version of the disclaimer. However, the live version of the disclaimer no longer contains that phrase. - See this deletion discussion for this point's information. Oh, to note, this photographer is a magistrate (i.e. a judge). So, the idea of automatically trusting images without clear attribution on weather.gov are free-to-use is in question.
- The Wikimedia Commons has a process known as precautionary principle, where if their is significant doubt that an image is free-to-use, it will be deleted. Note, one PD-NWS file has been deleted under the precautionary principle. The closing administrator remarks for the deletion discussion were: "
Per the precautionary principle, there is "significant doubt" about the public domain status of this file (4x keep + nominator, 5x delete), so I will delete it.
" - Several photographs/images using the PD-NWS are currently mid-deletion discussion, all for various reasonings.
- As of this message, 250 PD-NWS images have been checked out of the ~1,400.
- The photograph of the 1974 Xenia tornado (File:Xenia tornado.jpg) was found to not be in the public domain. It is still free-to-use, but under a CC 2.0 license, which requires attribution. From April 2009 to August 2024, Misplaced Pages/Wikimedia was incorrectly (and by definition, illegally) using the photograph, as it was marked incorrectly as a public domain photograph.
Solutions:
As stated earlier, there is no "formal" rulings, so no "formal" changes have been made. However, there is a general consensus between editors on things which are safe to do:
- Images made directly by NWS employees can be uploaded and used under the new PD-USGov-NWS-employee template (Usage: {{PD-USGov-NWS-employee}} ). This is what a large number of PD-NWS templated images are being switched to.
- Images from the NOAA Damage Assessment Toolkit (DAT) can be uploaded and used under the PD-DAT template (Usage: {{PD-DAT}} ). A large number of images are also being switched to this template.
For now, you are still welcome to upload images under the PD-NWS template. However, if possible it is recommended using the two templates above. I will send out another update when new information is found or new "rulings" have been made. The Weather Event Writer (Talk Page) 03:28, 17 August 2024 (UTC)
- I will add that there are a couple other safe templates such as PD-NEXRAD for radar images; and also the generic PD-USGov and PD-USGov-NOAA templates. West Virginia WXeditor (talk) 05:40, 17 August 2024 (UTC)

PD-NWS Violations Update #2 (Key To Read Third Section)
I am providing members of the WikiProject of Weather along with users who frequently edit weather-related articles an new update (2nd update) to the discussions regarding the PD-NWS image copyright template.
On the Commons, an RFC discussion is taking place to figure out how to manage the template. No "formal" administrative-style rules have occurred, so nothing has changed. That is not a surprise as the RFC is still ongoing.
What is new?
- The entire Template:PD-NWS has been placed inside a "License Review" template, which is viewable via the link aforementioned.
- Most of the photographs which were uploaded to the Commons originally under the PD-NWS template (approximately 1,500) have been reviewed. Out of those ~1,500 images, only about 150 are requiring additional looks. Most images have been verified as free-to-use and switched to a respective, valid template.
- As of this moment, approximately 50 photos have been nominated for deletion (results pending).
- A handful of images have been deleted (either confirmed copyrighted or under the Commons precautionary principle.
- One image has been kept following a deletion request under the PD-NWS template.
How to deal with new photos?
Given all of this, you might be wondering how the heck you use weather photos while creating articles? Well, here is what you can do!
- If the photo was made by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (excluding NWS), You can upload it under the PD-NOAA template via {{PD-NOAA}}.
- If the photo was made by the National Weather Service (NOT Third Party), you can upload it using the new PD-NWS-employee template via {{PD-USGov-NWS-employee}}.
- If the photo originates on the Damage Assessment Toolkit, you can upload it using the PD-DAT template via {{PD-DAT}}.
- If the photo is from a U.S. NEXRAD radar, you can upload it using the PD-NEXRAD template via via {{PD-NEXRAD}}.
What about third-party photos?
In the case of third-party photos...i.e. ones not taken by the National Weather Service themselves...there is an option which was discussed and confirmed to be valid from an English Misplaced Pages Administrator.
- KEY: Third party images of tornadoes & weather-related content can potentially be uploaded via Misplaced Pages's Non-Free Content Guidelines!
- Experiments/testing has been done already! In fact, I bet you couldn't tell the difference, but the tornado photograph used at the top of the 2011 Joplin tornado was already switched to a Non-Free File (NFF)! Check it out: File:Photograph of the 2011 Joplin tornado.jpeg! That photo's description can also be used as a template for future third-party tornado photographs uploaded to Misplaced Pages...with their respective information replaced.
- NFFs can be uploaded to multiple articles as well!
- The absolute key aspect of NFFs is that they relate to the article and are not decoration. For example with the Joplin tornado, the photograph: (1) shows the size of the tornado, (2) shows the "wall of darkness", which was described by witnesses, (3) shows a historic, non-repeatable event of the deadliest tornado in modern U.S. history. The exact reasoning does not have to be extremely specific as Misplaced Pages's NFF guidelines "is one of the most generous in the world" (words of Rlandmann (not pinged), the administrator reviewing all the PD-NWS template images).
- Tornado photographs will almost certainly qualify under the NFF guidelines, especially for tornadoes with standalone articles or standalone sections.
- NFFs cannot be used when a free-photograph is available, no matter the quality, unless the section is about that specific photograph. For example, the photograph used at the top of the 2013 Moore tornado article is confirmed to be free-to-use, therefore, no NFFs of that tornado can be uploaded on Misplaced Pages. However, the "Dead Man Walking" photograph could almost certainly be uploaded as an NFF to the 1997 Jarrell tornado article as that photograph is the topic of a section in the article.
- NFFs currently on Misplaced Pages can and should be placed in this category: Category:Non-free pictures of tornadoes.

Good article reassessment for 1943 Mazatlán hurricane
1943 Mazatlán hurricane has been nominated for a good article reassessment. If you are interested in the discussion, please participate by adding your comments to the reassessment page. Other articles that might need to be merged
Since we are proposing a lot of mergers, here are a few others that might be worth considering
- Effects of Hurricane Ivan in Alabama
- Effects of Hurricane Ivan in Florida (note that those two can probably also be combined for a larger subarctle for the Southeast, similar to Katrina)
- Effects of Hurricane Georges in Florida
- Effects of Hurricane Georges in Louisiana
- Effects of Hurricane Jeanne in Puerto Rico
12.74.53.67 (talk) 21:09, 10 September 2024 (UTC)
- I want to add onto this comment. For Hurricane Georges, we can either merge Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Cuba into a new article called the Greater Antilles or all except Cuba back into the main article. ZZ'S 23:02, 10 September 2024 (UTC)

GA/FA tutorial
I want to be able to improve articles and get them to GA/FA class without relying on others to do it for me. Now that you're not very active in getting the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season to FT status, are you at least able to mentor me in getting Earth science-related articles to GA and/or FA status. If you're not able to, at least you responded. Thank you in advance. ZZ'S 02:50, 16 September 2024 (UTC)

1967 Pacific typhoon season
I'm currently seeking to try to rewrite the 1967 Pacific typhoon season, spin off all needed articles, and hopefully promote it to FA-status. However, there's one odd problem...The JMA did not include any intensity estimates in their BT, choosing to use pressure instead, and it seems like the JMA intensity are just original research. Sharpie
Hello Hurricanehink! Thegoldengen (talk) 04:24, 14 October 2024 (UTC)

Concern regarding a death estimate
Hello Hink,
I wanted to ask for some help verifying a death estimate for a EPac storm. I was doing some research on 1988's Hurricane Kristy, a storm which appears to have caused significant deadly flooding and was building a draft article in my sandbox. In 2014, @Cyclonebiskit made an edit claiming 21 direct deaths had been due to the hurricane (which was the primary reason I decided to look into making an article for it), but the source he provided had no direct link, and I can't find the article he referenced anywhere online or in newspaper archives.
Here's a courtesy link to Kristy's section, the source is FN59. JayTee⛈️ 06:54, 3 November 2024 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Talk:Hurricane Rafael (2024)/GA1
A tag has been placed on Talk:Hurricane Rafael (2024)/GA1 requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done under section R3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a recently created redirect from an implausible typo or misnomer, or other unlikely search term.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. FLC
Howdy, HH! Many years ago, you offered some feedback at an ultimately unsuccessful FLC that I posted. Over the last few months, I've been fixing up the timeline of the 2004 Pacific hurricane season, and I recently re-nominated it for the bronze star. Totally up to you, but considering your involvement in the previous FLC, I'd appreciate if you had any feedback for round 2. Dylan620 (he/him • talk • edits) 20:02, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
Re: A barnstar for you!
@Hurricanehink: Many thanks for the recognition! As an aside, I also rewrote this old article of mine, that I wish to make a GA. Does it seem worthy, or is more needed? Is there a way to nominate it? CapeVerdeWave (talk) 11:46, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Hurricanehink: On another note, when reviewing 1873 AHS, I forgot not to manually enter the GA icon. Is that why the article still shows up under alerts—even in Earth sciences? If so, how may I fix this? CapeVerdeWave (talk) 09:50, 14 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Hurricanehink: The issue now appears to resolved itself. As an aside, I am trying to bring this article to GA status as well, but need more data for the Gulf Coast. (Misplaced Pages no longer has an account with Newspapers.com, unfortunately?) Please feel free to let others know. CapeVerdeWave (talk) 16:44, 15 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Hurricanehink: Yes, I have used the library liberally to date, often to access Newspapers.com, the latter of which no longer works with Misplaced Pages, apparently. NewspaperARCHIVE, ProQuest, and others are still decent, but Newspapers.com was a real trove. (As an aside, I nominated 1932 Bahamas hurricane for GA review. Maybe you care to go over it?) CapeVerdeWave (talk) 17:31, 16 December 2024 (UTC)
- On second thought: hold off for a moment; I found some more information on damage in the U.S. (Newspapers.com now works for me.) Apparently the storm did more damage to the East Coast than I thought. Please refrain from doing a GA review just yet until I am finished. (I will let you know.) CapeVerdeWave (talk) 20:38, 16 December 2024 (UTC)
- I am not actually done just yet, for my prose needs to be tidied. (Take the last section: the passage about the ship Nantucket, for instance, just seems awkward, but I struggled to find better wording. Maybe you or others can help?) I also just ordered a book that discusses Bahamian impacts more and am awaiting its arrival. Further, I need more data from Canada and Iceland. For instance, I just found out that the storm caused fatalities in Canada, along with quite a number of impacts (per this), so I need to add more details. I do not deem the article quite ready yet, but maybe you, I, and/or others could work on addressing its components. CapeVerdeWave (talk) 07:24, 20 December 2024 (UTC)
- Re: the Nantucket revision: yes, the original meaning is still clear, so I wove it into the article. I just expanded the Canada part as well, using the data from Environment Canada. I wish I had access to the British Newspaper Archive, however; that could add more depth to the Canada section (and maybe elsewhere). Also, do you know of any Scandinavian sources? I would like some details from Iceland, Norway, and/or the USSR. In the meantime I'm reworking the prose. Some unwieldy sections:
- "At 18:00 UTC on September 9 it became extratropical and lurched east-northeast, keeping hurricane-force winds about a day longer." This just comes off as a bit "wordy".
- "Its remnants soon traveled near the Snæfellsnes and Jan Mayen, bypassing those areas on the night of September 14–15." Can the clauses be combined and shortened somehow?
- "In the aftermath food supplies ran low and salt contaminated the drinking supply." Is there a way to smoothen this?
- "The storm leveled a pair of large brick churches with 3-foot-thick (0.91 m) stone walls, tossing some of the blocks 1⁄2 mi (0.80 km)." That the "blocks" made up the stone walls, as they did, is vaguely inferred.
- Any assistance here would be appreciated. I am still working on the article. (A book on the Bahamas effects will be arriving at the end of the month, so I may have more data to insert.) CapeVerdeWave (talk) 07:39, 21 December 2024 (UTC)
- No, I am not yet ready, for I have found a bunch of additional articles and am still awaiting a book on the storm. I also see that the prose needs to be reworked a bit in parts. I will let you know when I am ready for a GA review. CapeVerdeWave (talk) 16:47, 12 January 2025 (UTC)
- Okay, I have done so. I will keep you appraised. In the meantime, feel free to keep track of the article. CapeVerdeWave (talk) 07:04, 13 January 2025 (UTC)

Appealing my ban?
Hi Hink, hope you're doing well. After a long period of inactivity (real life got in the way), I've gotten more active again, and I was thinking of appealing my 2021 projectspace ban (oof, the discussion makes me cringe).
Is there any advice or guidance that you could give me before I officially appeal the ban, and if/when I appeal, would you support it? 🐔 Chicdat 12:09, 12 December 2024 (UTC)

Welcome to the 2025 WikiCup!
Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2025 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page.
For the 2025 WikiCup, we've implemented several changes to the scoring system. The highest-ranking contestants will now receive tournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are now open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants will no longer be eliminated at the end of each round.
The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), Frostly (talk · contribs · email), Guerillero (talk · contribs · email) and Lee Vilenski (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
