Silent films - running time
Hei hei, Ezzex,
Further to your question on the Help Desk a few days ago: engaged on another task I was reading a book about early German documentary films:
Jung, Uli; Loiperdinger, Martin, eds. (2005). Geschichte des dokumentarischen Films in Deutschland. Band 1: Kaiserreich (1895-1918) (PDF) (in German). Stuttgart: Philipp Reclam. doi:10.25969/mediarep/14035.
and on p. 511 I found what you may be looking for. If you don't read German, here's a translation:
"The projection speed of films was variable until the general introduction of optical sound films from 1929, which required 24 fps for technical reasons. It is now customary to show silent films at the speed at which they were recorded. Up until the late 1910s , film was generally shot at 16 to 18 fps. The operators of the Société Lumière usually shot at 20 fps. Based on the length information in meters recorded in the filmography , the running times of the films in the 35 mm normal film format can be calculated as follows:
16 fps: m × 0.055 18 fps: m × 0.0483 20 fps: m × 0.0433 24 fps: m × 0.0365 24 fps in 16mm format: m × 0.0916
My maths is very very bad, but:
If you have a 305 meter film running @16 fps, 305 x 0.055 = 16.5 minutes duration
And 305 meters @24 fps = 305 x 0.0365 = 11.13 minutes duration
Since 1 foot = 0.305 metre, a 1000 feet film running @16 fps = 1000 x 0.055 x 0.305 = 16.8 minutes (I think)
And 1000 feet @24fps = 1000 x 0.0365 x 0.305 = 11.13 minutes.
There must be some intermediate calculation involving 60 seconds per minute, but my maths is not that good. Also, beware, American Biograph and other production firms used 70mm film rather than 35mm to circumvent Edison patents, and I think that this may need even more calculation.
Not sure how any of this works with e.g. Abel Gance's Napoléon (1927 film).
Hope this all makes sense,

ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message
Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}}
