Since the last newsletter, the ] team has worked mostly minor features and fixing bugs. As of today, VisualEditor is now available as an opt-out feature to all users at 149 active Wikipedias.

Hi, You asked in my "help desk" entry if it was a content dispute, but my plea for help was shut down before I could answer, just as the dispute resolution process was shut down without resolution. Yes, my efforts to edit were about content, though Paradoctor and DVdm insisted on making it about me, as a full-on ad hominem attack full of insults about my supposed ignorance. True ignorance is believing that a 20 foot pole will fit into a 10 foot barn, based on relativity's version of idealism in denial of realism*... *that physical objects do not physically shrink due to the frame of reference from which they are observed. (It is not about "rotation," as as the supposed "shrinkage" is in the direction of travel of either the observer or the object. I asked that the word "apparent" be included in the length contraction article distinguishing apparent contraction from physical contraction. Even that minimal "disambiguation" was not allowed, because mainstream SR insists that there is no difference between physical and apparent contraction. I don't know where to take it from here. The section title says it. I was not allowed to put the word "apparent" in the length contraction article lead. More generally, the widespread criticism of relativity that there is a more or less stable (unchanging) physical world even as observations and measurements of given parts thereof would vary drastically with frame of reference according to relativity theory. # Yes, it is an officially recognized neighbourhood of Calgary, Alberta. Multiple official City of Calgary websites list it as such, which I will provide a few examples below: - (make sure to enable the "Community Districts" layer) - (search for the page titled "Manchester") - -
I have not asked anyone to change their username or signature. The suggestion that FIM's username might be hubristic did not come from me but from someone else. # As far as I am aware, Alyth/Bonnybrook/Manchester was a former community that consists of the modern day Calgary industrial communities of Alyth/Bonnybrook, Burns Industrial, Highfield Industrial, and Manchester Industrial. It was disambiguated sometime around 2006 into the modern day communities I listed. Manchester Industrial is an official community of it's own separate from Manchester or Alyth/Bonnybrook (being the industrial areas that surround Manchester), but is not the focus of the draft article.

More seriously, I have been accused of changing my signature to something overtly misogynistic as a direct personal attack on two female users with whom I have a disagreement. That is a demonstrably false, deeply hurtful and potentially very damaging accusation. Since the last newsletter, the ] team has worked on some small changes to the user interface, such as moving the reference item to the top of the Insert menu, as well as some minor features and fixing bugs, especially for rich copying and pasting of references.


I noticed , where you made a table by hand to do a ] source analysis. If you are interested, there is ], a userscript that can help with generating these sorts of tables.
The biggest change was the addition of more features to the '''image dialog''', including the ability to set alignment (left, right, center), framing options (thumbnail, frame, frameless, and ]), adding ], and defining the size manually. There is still some work to be done here, including a quick way to set the default size.

When even my talkpage was cut off to me, most recently on a transparently false charge of WP:CANVASSING when anybody who reads that policy and compares it to my actions sees there's no violation, I block evaded via raw IP clearly identifying my account. That's not socking. It's a perversion of language to say that that is socking. I can guess you can place made-up characterizations at the RFC/U that I have a "primary account" and "alternate account" when I consistently and honestly report from edit #1 that I am a single account user that abandoned a single prior account for privacy reasons. But you really go too far with this disgusting and manipulative "spit at the community" demagoguery. Save it for when you run for political office, would you? This is Colton Cosmic.

After falling prey a further time to a touch-and-go Huggle/Winkle user, this time in the opposite direction, I am calling it quits here. (While in past I was faulted for asking removal of longstanding unreferenced text, this time it was for urging that it be allowed to remain, at least on short term, so editors could add references.) I have decided the capriciousness of the general processes, and of the administrative review processes that take place early in the case—its structuring to favour the first to revert, and to favour those who can quickly call upon friends to join in reverting—does not lead to just outcomes in reasonable amounts of time. The new citation menu offers a locally configurable list of citation templates on the main toolbar. It adds or opens references using the simplified template dialog that was deployed last month. This tool is in addition to the "{{int:visualeditor-dialogbutton-reference-tooltip}}" item in the "{{int:visualeditor-toolbar-insert}}" menu, and it is not displayed unless it has been configured for that wiki. To enable this tool on your wiki, see the instructions at ].

Eventually, the VisualEditor team ] for these citations. When this long-awaited feature is created, you could add an ISBN, URL, DOI or other identifier to the citation tool, and VisualEditor would automatically fill in as much information for that source as possible. You, ], refer to a thread on the effectiveness of ] that has been closed since October. I assume that you mean a thread at ] that was in August, and, two months later, in October, the originator withdrew it. I completely missed it in August, because I wasn't watching the DRN talk page at the time. I probably wouldn't have said anything in defense of the continued existence of DRN that would have added to what was said. The originator provided some interesting statistics, and I think in good faith missed the point in a few ways. He overestimated the community time that was lost on the misplaced filings. More importantly, he assumed that the filers of the misplaced filings would have somehow found more constructive solutions on their own, when we know that many editors, especially new editors, don't have a clue what to do about a dispute, and can use advice, and he failed to attach value to having a place for volunteers to give advice. I think that one effect of a proposed shutdown of DRN that was not mentioned is that more disputes would go to ] as a place of first resort, if DRN was eliminated as a place of first resort. Some of those disputes might then go to article talk pages, Wikiprojects, or RFCs, but there would be hard feelings from the ] thread. I don't think that the originator thought his idea through.

I think that one change to DRN could be to recognize that it has at least two functions in dispute resolution. The first should be as a help desk for advice and possibly quick assistance in answering where to take disputes. The second would be for mediation. The current description of DRN is that it is an informal place that is an early stop in disputes. What other than RFC, ], and ArbCom are later stops? When DRN was established, there was MEDCOM. Was there also MEDCAB, or did DRN follow the dissolution of MEDCAB?

David Eppstein sent a message that our page does not have any reference, a simple request, we with due honor we followed. Me being a senior scientist currently working in MIT would never post anything without peer review in Misplaced Pages. Please check the page yourself, ]. I sent the professor an email and he abused me in the email with bad words. I added all references (check the page with time, we followed his instructions with due respect), yet he came and tagged our page again, all changed reverted. Misplaced Pages suggested us to link the article with other related articles because it is "Orphan". So we did. Prof Epstein found each and every single link and deleted them making our page "orphan" once again, so that robots delete the page, in due time.


Some of the disputes that we listed as closed because they belonged somewhere else may be successes if we think that directing a user to the right place is a success.
Here is the editor https://en.wikipedia.org/User:David_Eppstein check how many people have complained in his talk page, I informed him politely that we have followed his instruction (check his talk page, for my post), yet he does not change the notice. I informed him that all his concerns are addressed. By the way I have more reputed publications than this editor. Check the history of AjoChhand Machine page to verify (time now) and how politely, and respectfully we have addressed his concern, still he reverts back. He does not check our modifications. I could post his abusive messages, but did not.


What else did you have in mind as the changes that you say there have been in dispute resolution since DRN was created?
I sincerely request you to check, how our article is based on extensive peer reviewed work over six years. After giving several plenary lectures, I was asked to do something general people. While I think that applying 1RR restrictions to him on this particular topic is appropriate, I question why he and I are to be treated equally. I am adding referenced info to the article, he is removing it. I created two RfCs, waited until they were completed before adding the info, and he removed it again. I've worked on a lot of articles and don't have a history of edit warring, yet that is all he does. Before his efforts here, he edited as an IP, with a history of blocks for just such behavior: . He may also be writing as an IP : where he just removed a bunch of info: and may have had another identity as (if so - a sockpuppet?).

Manchester, Calgary

  1. Yes, it is an officially recognized neighbourhood of Calgary, Alberta. As far as I am aware, Alyth/Bonnybrook/Manchester was a former community that consists of the modern day Calgary industrial communities of Alyth/Bonnybrook, Burns Industrial, Highfield Industrial, and Manchester Industrial. It was disambiguated sometime around 2006 into the modern day communities I listed. Manchester Industrial is an official community of it's own separate from Manchester or Alyth/Bonnybrook (being the industrial areas that surround Manchester), but is not the focus of the draft article.

DRN on face masks... it's like stuck pixels. Also I need a break.

  • sigh* I don't know how I couldn't have seen this sooner. After reading the post from Retraction Watch, as well as a few papers... that mislink is like a freaking stuck pixel. And... of course... there's no consensus on what to do whenever this happens. I mean, how do people react to stuck pixels.

Which, like the occasional defective monitor that comes out of the factory, science is going to have the occasional misrepresented source. The question is whether it's just an accident or indicative of something else (like The Bell Curve).

If I ever come back to this, I think it might be worth going to a village pump, since it's likely multiple policies are going to be affected. In the meantime, I'd like to take a bit of a break and close this DRN. Reason: I just read the latest CIDRAP headline. Combined with some climate news I'm reading, as well as my other work, I think it might be prudent for my sanity to put this on ice.

User:Spiderone - Yes. I nominated it for AFD because it only had one source, which did not establish general notability, and the article did not satisfy the presumption of tennis notability. The originator has added multiple sources. I haven't analyzed the sources and am not planning to analyze the sources, but the sources very likely do establish general notability. Now, that is starting to make sense. I was going to ask that IP user about when it is ready for resubmission, and I'm the one who created the draft article. So, we need to wait until after the show airs next week to resubmit the draft article for review, and we have to provide additional reliable sources besides ABS-CBN, which is considered an original research, as references when expanding the article before that. Dealing someone's personal attack in edit summary

Be aware that personal attacks in edit summaries are even more serious than personal attacks on talk pages, because they can only be deleted by admins. What is the issue? I created this redirect page of an upcoming group then the other user created a draft of it then suddenly edited and copy paste the contents from their draft to the redirect page I created then published it after that they moved it to other space in WP to have ownership of content. The draft is not ready for article space, and both of you can work on improving it. When will the band first either perform and be reviewed or release an album or single that will chart? You can both collaborate. If there is any more quarreling, I may have to file a report at WP:ANI, which might result in both of you getting logged warnings or short blocks. If you don't have a different idea for how to divide the labor, each of you can research the history of some of the band members. Misplaced Pages is big enough for both of you. Your bludgeoning accusation to me at the DRV for Clock/calendar is a bit off-topic so I'm responding at your talk page. I really don't like repeating myself, but I did so in response to your comment because you mentioned It isn't clear what if anything the appellant wants to change in the outcome. That was a very confusing comment to me because I felt that I had been very clear in that regard. So I succinctly explained what needs to change in this outcome for your own clarity (along with addressing the red herring policy forum suggestion). That you followed it up with accusations of bludgeoning is perhaps even more confounding. I disagree that I am making a very high number of comments and making the same arguments over and over again. Bludgeoners always have to have the last word, which is not an accurate portrayal of my participation. In fact, Compassionate727 got the last word in both of my other responses. DRN

Hi Robert, hope you’re doing well. Letting you know that I’ve returned to Misplaced Pages and I’ll be doing some bits and pieces over at DRN from time to time. I’ve seen a thread about DRN and its effectiveness (closed, since October last year) but it raises some good points that I think should be considered, as our DR processes have changed since I first created DRN 12 years ago. Some Thoughts on DRN

You, User:Steven Crossin, refer to a thread on the effectiveness of DRN that has been closed since October. I assume that you mean a thread at the DRN talk page that was in August, and, two months later, in October, the originator withdrew it. I completely missed it in August, because I wasn't watching the DRN talk page at the time. I probably wouldn't have said anything in defense of the continued existence of DRN that would have added to what was said. The originator provided some interesting statistics, and I think in good faith missed the point in a few ways. He overestimated the community time that was lost on the misplaced filings. More importantly, he assumed that the filers of the misplaced filings would have somehow found more constructive solutions on their own, when we know that many editors, especially new editors, don't have a clue what to do about a dispute, and can use advice, and he failed to attach value to having a place for volunteers to give advice. I think that one effect of a proposed shutdown of DRN that was not mentioned is that more disputes would go to WP:ANI as a place of first resort, if DRN was eliminated as a place of first resort. Some of those disputes might then go to article talk pages, Wikiprojects, or RFCs, but there would be hard feelings from the WP:ANI thread. I don't think that the originator thought his idea through.

I think that one change to DRN could be to recognize that it has at least two functions in dispute resolution. The first should be as a help desk for advice and possibly quick assistance in answering where to take disputes. The second would be for mediation. The current description of DRN is that it is an informal place that is an early stop in disputes. What other than RFC, WP:ANI, and ArbCom are later stops? When DRN was established, there was MEDCOM. Was there also MEDCAB, or did DRN follow the dissolution of MEDCAB?

Some of the disputes that we listed as closed because they belonged somewhere else may be successes if we think that directing a user to the right place is a success.

What else did you have in mind as the changes that you say there have been in dispute resolution since DRN was created?
