==What is a "tribute"?==

Anticipating the mention of a new Spock , which some articles have described as a "tribute," maybe we should clarify what a "tribute" is for WP additions. My understanding is that a tribute would ''not'' include anything that had a profit motive, such as a limited edition collectible. Thoughts? --] (]) 20:18, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
:If this were a private company, I would say almost certainly not. This is, however, the Perth Mint. That said, this wouldn't get its own paragraph (never mind section), but a single sentence among similar additions would make sense to me. The sentence could read, as one example:

== Leonard Nimoy....Mr.Nimoy not mentioned for his part in TV Show "A Man Called Shenandoah" ==
== Up and coming birthday ==
With all due respect for the Great Info that Misplaced Pages produces, I wanted to mention how Mr. Nimoy was left out of All Mention about his part he played as a Guest Star on One of the TV Episodes of "A Man Called Shenandoah". He played the part of a Hired Gun who was paid to kill Mr. Shenandoah...as of coarse his efforts failed....I did not get the Title of the Episode but I just clearly Noticed Mr. Nimoy playing the villainous character....On your Wiki Site relating to the TV Show "A Man Called Shenandoah" he is mentioned as a Guest Star but on Mr. Nimoy's Wiki Site There is No Mention of him as a Credit for his appearance....I know it is a Minor bit of info and over site but I think you will agree that All actors deserve recognition for all work they are a part of, Especially one as well respected as Leonard Nimoy, as ALL Stars fade fast as time rolls on.....Please look into correcting and Updating Mr. Nimoy's Info Relating to his appearance on an Episode of "A Man Called Shenandoah".......Thank You. — Preceding ] comment added by ] (]) 21:48, 19 April 2017 (UTC)

For the lead image, can we replace the current one with this one:

I usually see this trend when the subject of the article is deceased, they replace the image with a vintage (black and white, high res image) rather than a current one. I believe this image would be a perfect replacement for a lead image.

== What does the surname 'Nimoy' mean? ==
== The Hebrew Letter Shin ==
I was thinking about adding the following sentence to the article (or to the ] disambiguation page):

"The surname 'Nimoy' is derived from a Russian term for a foreigner who is unable to speak Russian (from the word ''nemoy'' meaning ''mute'').<ref> word meaning from the ] (in Russian)</ref>"
Under Personal Life it currently reads

Nimoy also devised the Vulcan Salute, a raised hand, palm forward with the fingers parted between the middle and ring finger. It is said to be based on the traditional kohanic blessing, which is performed with both hands, thumb to thumb in this position; a position thought to represent the Hebrew letter shin (ש). (This letter is often used as a symbol of God in Judaism, as it is an abbreviation for God's name Shaddai. This usage is seen, for example, on every mezuzah.)

I have been under the impression that the letter Shin is used because it is the first letter in the "Shema", which is written on the scroll inserted in each mezuzah. —Preceding ] comment added by ] (] • ]) 17:31, 26 June 2007

But I can't be 100% sure that this information really applies to Mr. Nimoy's family or to Nimoy when used as a surname. I got this information from the ] page. If this information can be substantiated by some other sources, it might be interesting to add here. ] (]) 07:38, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
== Production Company ==

I had read once that Leonard Nimoy has or had his own production company and was personally quite active in the day-to-day running of this. He also was so wealthy that he literally owned the skyscraper that the production company was located in.
These are major facets of the actor's life, or at least have been in relatively recent years, and therefore in my opinion there should be information about these things in this article in order to make it more complete.

== The Cage 1965 ==

Nimoy's role in The Cage (the first Star Trek pilot) is missing from his credits - see here for info http://en.wikipedia.org/Star_Trek:_The_Cage
Of course The Cage was not aired until the 1980's (?) for the first time, and was used in part in The Menagerie episode, but still is his screen work.
Perhaps should be listed under 1965 as part of his work.

== Leonard Nemoy as a newscaster ==

I believe Mr. Nimoy worked as a newscaster for KYW(channel 3) in Philadelphia for a brief period during the early sixties.

== the vulcan salute ==

My understanding of this, as a Theodore Sturgeon reader, was that Sturgeon originated the concept and it was first used in the "Pon Far" episode he wrote where Spock was forced to battle Kirk on the planet Vulcan. Sturgeon wrote at least two episodes for TOS and likely contributed ideas to others, as did other sci-fi authors of that era, and can be credited with developing the Spock character in ways we are all now familiar with. Nimoy may have ultimately come up with what the physical salute gesture looks like, and perfected it for the show, but the whole "live long and prosper" thing was all Sturgeon. — Preceding ] comment added by ] (] • ]) 15:29, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

His grandaughter said.. "Hi all, as you all know, my Grandpa passed away this morning at 8:40 from end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He was an extraordinary man, husband, grandfather, brother, actor, author-the list goes on- and friend. Thank you for the warm condolences. May you all LLAP. - Dani"

William Shatner said.. "I loved him like a brother. We will all miss his humor, his talent, and his capacity to love.

== Tinnitus ==

It is wrongly stated that tinnitus "is a symptom of hearing loss". However, this is not always the case (e.g., I've had tinnitus for 30+ years with no ancillary hearing loss). In Nimoy's case, this might have been true (A); or the author might have added the comment to illustrate what tinnitus is (B). I suggest to edit this into something along the following lines:

if A): "along with progressive hearing loss."

if B): either ("which frequently correlates with hearing loss"), or simply a link to wiki's own page (https://en.wikipedia.org/Tinnitus). I prefer the link as the other sounds dull: if it did in his case, say so; if it didn't, it's an unnecessary statement.

Not a big issue, but as wiki is so authoritative these days...

::A statement regarding a celebrity's death isn't notable or appropriate to include in a Misplaced Pages article just because a president issued it. Misplaced Pages articles aren't meant to be a collection of quotes and statements by people quoted by the press. Nimoy's death wasn't particularly notable. People are sad Nimoy died, that's expected, but his death is hardly a shock or surprise at his age. It's not the same as if it were something catastrophic that caused his death, or if it had been the result of a notable act of violence, or a suicide (such as Robin Williams). Obama wasn't involved in Nimoy's career, there's nothing indicating they were close friends. Presidents issue statements all the time and we are not obligated include those statements every time they say something about someone with celebrity status. Quotes from Shatner, Takei, and anyone else who starred beside him (within reason) on Star Trek or in the Star Trek films are appropriate. It's simply unnecessary article bloat (bordering on trivia) to include Obama's statement. -- ] ● ] ] 01:54, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

:It's newsworthy, but not encyclopedic. Further, just because someone gives a statement on an actor's death, that doesn't mean it merits inclusion. Moreover, we aren't to overload articles with quotes. Nimoy was well known and well-liked, there are going to be people saying things about him over the next day or two. We don't devote an inordinate amount of space to those comments, no matter who the statements are made by. And let's not forget, while a NASA quote is cool, Nimoy never actually ventured "where no man has gone before". He didn't step on the moon, an imaginary planet called Vulcan, nor did he ever go into space. Yes, it's cool someone from NASA made a statement about his death, but it's not necessary, encyclopedic content. The tone-deafness is actually coming from you, Sliver (this is not new for you). I didn't say his life was not notable, I said his death isn't particularly notable. He was 83 and died from something many elderly people have and eventually die from: complications of COPD. He didn't have cancer, he didn't die violently, he didn't die in a shocking manner, he didn't suffer from Parkinson's, etc. His death isn't notable, he was. Regardless, we still don't clutter up articles with a bunch of "tributes", we pick and choose. Barack Obama made a statement about his death. So what? As you stated, he's commented about a number of people's deaths. How many deaths of celebrities were commented on by previous presidents? Probably most in the latter-20th century. How many of those comments are remembered or cared about today? Very, very (VERY) few (if any). A president commenting about the death of a celebrity isn't noteworthy, it's newsworthy. What is a "tribute"?

Anticipating the mention of a new Spock collectible coin, which some articles have described as a "tribute," maybe we should clarify what a "tribute" is for WP additions. My understanding is that a tribute would not include anything that had a profit motive, such as a limited edition collectible. Thoughts? --Light show (talk) 20:18, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

If this were a private company, I would say almost certainly not. This is, however, the Perth Mint. That said, this wouldn't get its own paragraph (never mind section), but a single sentence among similar additions would make sense to me. The sentence could read, as one example:

The Perth Mint struck a full-color coin featuring Spock, "to honour the legacy of the late actor Leonard Nimoy and his on screen character".

My US$0.02, anyway. ATinySliver/ 🖖 20:53, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
Seems like a good rationale for including. --Light show (talk) 21:08, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

New Canadian stamp

Since a new national stamp will be issued, would a fair use (non-free) image with sourced commentary be useable? If so, can someone add it? --Light show (talk) 19:46, 11 April 2016 (UTC)

Lead image suggestion

Since the first paragraph of the lead implies that he was most known for his role as Spock, I think the recently uploaded Spock photo would be more relevant and identifiable by more readers than a recent public event shot, which can be moved down. --Light show (talk) 07:08, 20 August 2016 (UTC)

No problem, either one is OK. However, according to CLindberg's comments, he felt that the previous Nimoy photo was clearly shown to have been published numerous times based on the stampings, whereas the Montgomery photo in that link, which has the same info as the current Nimoy photo, had no such proof of actually "changing hands," or distribution. Would you mind commenting there since many, if not most, of the well-sourced photos with reverse-side details, such as this one, are apparently still questionable? --Light show (talk) 04:56, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

Way Out West featuring Nimoy?

I was researching a sample for "Earth" a 1997 track on the Way Out West (Way Out West album) album. "Earth", the last track, (and the "Earth (Waveform Remix)") features a quote (twice, near the beginning and near the end) from H. G. Wells' 1895 novella, The Time Machine, "The whole surface of the earth seemed changed, melting and flowing under my eyes." The unique mysterious male voice sounds like actor/director John Huston or actor/director Leonard Nimoy. Nimoy did an 1994 adaptation yet the audio sampled is not from that Nimoy recording nor many of the audio book versions and movies available on YouTube, if they even include that quote in their adaptation. Any assistance in verifying or not, or pointing me in the correct direction to find that voice is greatly appreciated. ~ JasonCarswell (talk) 08:36, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

What does the surname 'Nimoy' mean?

I was thinking about adding the following sentence to the article (or to the Nimoy disambiguation page):

"The surname 'Nimoy' is derived from a Russian term for a foreigner who is unable to speak Russian (from the word nemoy meaning mute)."

But I can't be 100% sure that this information really applies to Mr. Nimoy's family or to Nimoy when used as a surname. I got this information from the Leo Tolstoy page.
