== Point La Vista Cape (Jacksonville) - Newly Published Starter Article ==

Dear Cuchullain:
By way of introduction, I've written and recently had published in Misplaced Pages an article on the Cape of Point La Vista, Jacksonville. I am seeking to have it inserted in the Misplaced Pages article about Jacksonville Florida, which breaks out the neighborhoods. It is now considered just part of "Southside", somewhere between San Marco (which overlaps on the cape) and Mandarin. It is one of the most geographically distinct neighborhoods ( a cape)
and has a solidly documented history from Timucua, British Era, Colonial Second Spanish, Antebellum and Modern Times. So if you have an interest in helping me insert the article, please let me know.

We now have a new editor ] who does not want to follow these guides but instead use the US and UK guidelines and has renamed three stations to ], ] and ] which no longer follow the guidelines without seeking any consensus on this. As a result templates such as ] will no longer work on the New South Wales one and I suspect the same thing on other states. I have not been able to revert these changes. What should be done about this? ] (]) 03:52, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
:{{u|Fleet Lists}}, I'm not sure what there is to do as the guideline was never adopted. There's certainly a good case that the parenthetical disambiguation are more common, which is why they were used in the US, Canada, the UK and Ireland. Maybe it's time to start a new discussion. Personally I think Australia and New Zealand will need different guidelines as their slates of articles are different.--] ]/] 21:12, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

== Opechancanough, not Opchanacanough ==

This is a weird one. I was working on some Algonquian and noticed an issue here. It seems that years ago somebody added a fallacious spelling Opchanacanough that doesn't appear in any of the documents I've found or in any books prior to the mid-2000s. Nobody checked it and now it shows up in more recent books using WP as a source! It also somehow became the article title but I can't find the move request though. Perhaps the article was created with the misspelling. (It's particularly egregious because the first n was probably only a phonetic spread before -an: the word for "soul" was cehcak in a:pe-cehcak-en-o:w "white-soul-it-he = He Whose Soul Is White".)

Anyhow, this should probably be moved and I've posted on the talk page about it.

== How we will see unregistered users ==

<section begin=content/>
Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin '''will still be able to access the IP'''. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on ] to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can ]. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can ] to ].

We have ] this identity could work. '''We would appreciate your feedback''' on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can ]. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you.

Posting here to avoid the drama of an ANI thread. ] from the past month (June 2022).
About a month ago, ] and I were both placed under a moratorium by Dennis Brown (]). We were told not to "push the boundaries of incivility, bludgeon discussions, '''violate WP:IDHT''', act in a disruptive manner on any talk page, or breach any other policy that makes editing miserable for other editors" (emphasis mine). The result of a violation would be "either or another admin should simply block for a minimum of 72 hours, with rapidly escalating blocks".

{{Col-begin}}
CurtisNaito has, I believe, engaged in the same kind of disruptive IDHT behaviour on ] that led to the above numerous times since the moratorium, and has been called out for it by myself and several other users (these warnings were, ironically, ]). He has been claiming that no one ever proved any sourcing problems with the article, that no edit-warring has taken place, that no editors have presented positive proposals for expanding the article, and so on, all of which are blatant IDHT.
{{Col-2}}

] '''Administrator changes'''

The CurtisNaito IDHT problem expands across about a half-dozen talk pages (all of which now have massive archives as a result) and was what led to what would otherwise seem like an overly harsh moratorium on such behaviour. Considering out past involvement in articles relating to ] and the local area in Wales, I have come across ] which is currently branded as being too crowded. I would like to ask how many images should ideally be in a category. Although the category in question is on Commons, I am asking here because I expect there is a similar preference on Misplaced Pages. At the time of writing this, there were 911 files in the Aberdyfi category, many of which were uploaded by bots without placing them into any subcategories. In response to this issue, I have created some new subcategories but it would be time-consuming to move all of the appropriate images manually.] (]) 22:17, 2 January 2025 (UTC)

:::The problem is the ArbCom case has NOTHING to do with CurtisNaito and the history of Japan GAR. CurtisNaito (and one of his allies) just jumped in to the ArbCom case because he saw another opportunity to get rid of me. I don't think the CurtisNaito problem has reached the level where ArbCom is necessary yet -- if the ArbCom case didn't exist, the problem could just be taken to ANI where it would likely be resolved pretty quickly (I wouldn't even have to do it, since two or three other users agree with me). It therefore seems extremely unlikely that ArbCom would actually weigh in on the issue at hand. ] (<small>]]</small>) 01:07, 17 October 2015 (UTC)

::::Actually, given that you have once again displayed in the above your remarkable tendency toward clearly paranoic insistence on assuming both bad faith of others, and in making a rather clearly over-the-top accusation that the sole purpose of others is to "get rid of you", and that you have displayed this same tendency of paranoic assumption of bad faith toward several people, I think it is reasonable for many others including perhaps the arbcom to question whether there exists one specific problem area, your personal behavior, which is consistently unacceptable and perhaps primary cause for the situation that now exists. Also, honestly, I rather doubt you have all the information ArbCom and others might on this subject, and also whether you, who are perhaps so clearly blinded by your own presuppositions, are even capable of judging the matters. Also, from what I remember, Curtis and TH chimed in at least a few discussions regarding Catflap, and although I haven't checked you may have even at least implicitly made the same sort of paranoic judgements there you did in the above. All that being the case, honestly, I think it very reasonable to question whether you as an individual are even remotely competent to determining what is and is not relevant to this particular problem. ] (]) 15:09, 17 October 2015 (UTC)

:::::Ah yes, yet another prime example of holier-than-thou commentary from the Warlord of Mars himself. I do believe Hijiri is paranoid about sockpuppetry (and he had good reason to be until fairly recently), but paranoia is not the case here. CurtisNaito and TH1980 showed up at the last ANI to request a block/ban of Hijiri. That in no sense of the word makes them "involved". They were never part of any of the actual disputes or even the IBAN discussion. You and I are involved. The only reason I can think of to let both of them be noted as "involved" at ArbCom is to strengthen the case against Hijiri in the hopes that they'll be more lenient on Catflap. And FYI after the ArbCom case is closed and the ANI case against TH1980 is closed (so you can't accuse me of gaming again) I'll be filing for an IBAN between us. Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • When blocking an IPv6 address with Twinkle, there is now a checkbox with the option to just block the /64 range. When doing so, you can still leave a block template on the initial, single IP address' talkpage.
  • When protecting a page with Twinkle, you can now add a note if doing so was in response to a request at WP:RfPP, and even link to the specific revision.
  • There have been a number of reported issues with Pending Changes. Most problems setting protection appear to have been resolved (phab:T273317) but other issues with autoaccepting edits persist (phab:T275322).

Administrators' newsletter – April 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2021).

Administrator changes

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, F7 (invalid fair-use claim) subcriterion a has been deprecated; it covered immediate deletion of non-free media with invalid fair-use tags.
  • Following a request for comment, page movers were granted the delete-redirect userright, which allows moving a page over a single-revision redirect, regardless of that redirect's target.

Technical news

  • When you move a page that many editors have on their watchlist the history can be split and it might also not be possible to move it again for a while. This is because of a job queue problem. (T278350)
  • Code to support some very old web browsers is being removed. This could cause issues in those browsers. (T277803)

Point La Vista Cape (Jacksonville) - Newly Published Starter Article

Dear Cuchullain: By way of introduction, I've written and recently had published in Misplaced Pages an article on the Cape of Point La Vista, Jacksonville. I am seeking to have it inserted in the Misplaced Pages article about Jacksonville Florida, which breaks out the neighborhoods. It is now considered just part of "Southside", somewhere between San Marco (which overlaps on the cape) and Mandarin. It is one of the most geographically distinct neighborhoods ( a cape) and has a solidly documented history from Timucua, British Era, Colonial Second Spanish, Antebellum and Modern Times. So if you have an interest in helping me insert the article, please let me know. PointLaVista (talk) 15:51, 5 April 2021 (UTC)Point La Vista

Misplaced Pages:Naming conventions (Australian and New Zealand stations)

A few years ago you assisted in the drafting of these guidelines which appear have never been formalised. We now have a new editor User talk:053pvr who does not want to follow these guides but instead use the US and UK guidelines and has renamed three stations to Hamilton railway station (New South Wales)‎, Hamilton railway station (Victoria)‎ and Hamilton railway station (New Zealand)‎ which no longer follow the guidelines without seeking any consensus on this. As a result templates such as Template:rwsa will no longer work on the New South Wales one and I suspect the same thing on other states. I have not been able to revert these changes. What should be done about this? Fleet Lists (talk) 03:52, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

Fleet Lists, I'm not sure what there is to do as the guideline was never adopted. There's certainly a good case that the parenthetical disambiguation are more common, which is why they were used in the US, Canada, the UK and Ireland. Maybe it's time to start a new discussion. Personally I think Australia and New Zealand will need different guidelines as their slates of articles are different.--Cúchullain /c 21:12, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

Opechancanough, not Opchanacanough

TheLateDentarthurdent (talk) 14:56, 26 May 2021 (UTC)

Technical news

  • Wikimedia previously used the IRC network Freenode. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.

Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

Arbitration

  • A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
  • Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
  • The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.

Miscellaneous

  • Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
  • The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.

ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:05, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Magadoxa

Hi. In 2006, you created Magadoxa as a redirect to Essaouira. I have changed the target to Mogadishu, that being the target of Magadoxo, as well as the location suggested by the maps below:

If you have reason to believe Essaouira is also an appropriate target, you may wish to change the redirect to a disambiguation. —AlphaMikeOmega (talk) 15:52, 9 January 2022 (UTC)

Spin-off

Hello there, Cuchullain. In regards to this, do you really think spinoff is a better spelling than spin-off? I personally have seen the latter spelling used more often, plus the WP article for spin-off (media) is also titled that way, so I believe that that is the more commonly used spelling. InfiniteNexus (talk) 04:04, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

I think they're both fine - they're both clearly in use - and there's no reason to change from one to the other as long as its consistent. In this case the article had used "spinoff" but over time someone changed one or two of the uses to "spin-off" but not the others, which is why I changed them back.--Cúchullain /c 15:26, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
Someone changed one or two of the uses to "spin-off" but not the others, yes, which is why I find-and-replaced all instances of "spinoff" to "spin-off" in the edit that you reverted. InfiniteNexus (talk) 03:36, 20 January 2022 (UTC)

  • Following a motion, the Arbitration Committee adopted a new enforcement restriction on January 4, 2024, wherein the Committee may apply the 'Reliable source consensus-required restriction' to specified topic areas.
  • Community feedback is requested for a draft to replace the "Information for administrators processing requests" section at WP:AE.

Proposed deletion of G-Spot (disambiguation)

Notice

The article G-Spot (disambiguation) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Disambiguation page not required (WP:ONEOTHER). Primary topic article has a hatnote to the only other use.

While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Invitation to participate in a research

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Misplaced Pages, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team

ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:08, 19 November 2024 (UTC)

Image categories

Considering out past involvement in articles relating to Aberdyfi and the local area in Wales, I have come across the Aberdyfi category for images on Wikimedia Commons which is currently branded as being too crowded. In response to this issue, I have created some new subcategories but it would be time-consuming to move all of the appropriate images manually.Tk420 (talk) 22:17, 2 January 2025 (UTC)

  • The Nuke feature also now provides links to the userpage of the user whose pages were deleted, and to the pages which were not selected for deletion, after page deletions are queued. This enables easier follow-up admin-actions.
